Palani Ryker is trapped in a loveless marriage with a man. Realizing that she’d probably rather be with women, when she meets Kana Sorbinno and is instantly attracted to her, she tries to persuade Kana to date her, but Kana isn’t one to get involved with married women.
When Kana eventually gives in, their relationship blossoms and Palani knows she made the right decision, but with her husband still in the picture, it’s not all smooth sailing.
With complications arising faster than they can be dealt with, is it worth Taking the Chance?
Sherryl grew up in San Diego, California the youngest of three. She began making up stories as a teenager. Working for the State of California at the Department of Justice taught her the inner workings of law enforcement. Her first stories centered around law enforcement situations. She married her husband and had two children. She continued writing and attempted to be published. When an agent returned her submission for the third time she gave up. Always the romantic, the stories came with a vengeance after marrying her wife. Her biggest fan, (other than her mother) her wife, Tirzah, decided these needed to be published. First self-published then contacted by a publisher this is a dream come true for Sherryl.
After so many books I thought it was a bit weird to have a prequel. It was okay, but I prefer knowing about the characters I've been reading about already. It was a nice look into Samoan traditions though, I thought that was cool.

This is not really a WeHo book of ask me and honestly it's more of a prequel of sorts because Cat is in it but not the present Cat we know, but the one that dated Elizabeth before she married. I was not prepared for that and once I realized what was going on did not like Elizabeth because, well, we know what happens if we follow the series. What I did enjoy was the story between Palani and Kana. I am not a fan of adultery but this wasn't the in your face type and the romance was actually sweet. And then of course something terrible happens and they break up then get back together and then some more happens and you just like the characters more. I'm rambling I know and I apologize...let me start again...
Plano is a model who married her manager at the age of 22. She discovers that maybe she's not in love with the male species and feels an instant attraction to 32 year old San Diego police sergeant Kana. Kana is reluctant but the two ended up having an affair and fall in love. A misunderstanding separates them, a tragedy reunites them, but family may ultimately tear them apart. Their story was a good read. I honestly could have done without the Cat and Elizabeth story but if this was prequel then I can see how that may play a role. Overall it was another enjoyable read in the series. Easily a 3.75*
We’re not quite sure what this one was all about. Despite having romances (yes, in plural), sexy times and police drama, this one was something of a drag.
We learned more about Kana and Palani and how they came to be. Palani was a beautiful woman who was an itty bitty mouse next to Kana. Obviously, I was instantly attracted to Kana given that she could kick ass and look hot while doing it. I also loved that she didn't fit the mold of a typical butch. She had a softer side to her, and when I say softer, I mean she liked to wear makeup and wear her hair long and flowy.
*Please, do not ever think butch women don't or can't have softer sides when it comes to their emotions, because in all honesty, I think butch women are more emotional and vulnerable than most others*
I really enjoyed reading about each woman's families and how different they were and how each one came to accept their daughters' choices in life.
I enjoyed the story of Kana and Palani, Samoan women, and their love of their island, it's culture and family and language. After reading the author's website I decided to read the WeHo series beginning with the prequels. I've not been disappointed. This book drew me in and propelled me into the entire series. So, I'll be binge reading over the next several days! This back story was well written. The character descriptions allowed me to see the characters; Kana's 5'10" muscular build, strength and beauty. Palani's smaller build because she was a model. The love story was tragic but redeeming and that was a plus. I'm on to the next.
I have very, very mixed emotions on this one. As I stated on my last review of the previous book in this series - I have very strong feelings about cheating and this story line was difficult for me I'm not going to lie. I'm glad that Palani and Kana are happy, in love and together after so much ... I do truly believe that fate brings us together with whom we are destined to be with, it was just hard. I am however very happy about Catalina and Elizabeth :-) and this is what I'm taking from this one
I ha e thoroughly enjoyed all of the WeHo series. This delightful prequel gives us a glance into Kana and Palani's beginnings. I cannot wait to continue to read about then in future WeHo books.
At first I was lost but then I realized it let us know the history of some of the supporting characters and one of the main characters. That being said it's a must read
Sherryl Hancock creates strong relationships with impressive women. She creates magic with her chemistry and passion. I look forward to more by this author and will continue to read this series.
Very outlier from the usual people in the series. Had heard of Cat, Elizabeth, and Kana in passing before but this story was on and off, Not the best in the series but did enjoy the Hawaiian taste.
As true to Sherryl's previous stories in the WeHo series another blockbuster! I was drawn in again to the beginning of a love affair that has barely been touched upon in the rest of the series. Not only for Kana and Pellani but Cat and Elizabeth. I don't know about everyone else, but I enjoyed diving into the prequel and a better understanding of a few key character's relationships and the backstory. I love a good backstory. This does not disappoint!!!
I loved the new characters but I was thrown by an old character showing up quite a bit different. Then I realized this book encompasses years and that explained the older character’s storyline (which had me rereading her WeHo). I am a sucker for B/F storylines and this truly delivers.
Really loving this series. Each book gets better by the author Sherryl Hancock. This time the story revolves around a cop called Kana whose a Somoan from Hawaii, who meets a married woman called Palani during an investigation following a murder.. This is well worth reading and reccomended.
The story was a good one but I felt it could have been told in straight narrative without repeating some facts so often. It doesn't flow as easily as the others. I have read ALL of them. I still look forward to the next, keep them coming they've become my family.
I recommend this book but I have enjoyed thus series. Great character development very likable . I highly recommend this series very good read. Hope there are more books in this series. Thanks
Book 15 of this series was wonderful, as always. I've enjoyed immensely reading every book. I love how so many characters from other books are intertwined. My only complaint is that Sherryl can't write faster! 😊
I absolutely love the WeHo series and Taking Chances did not disappoint. I liked getting more background story on Catalina Roche', hers was never as clear.
This book had a few new characters and only a couple from the series. I really enjoyed the book but I hope the gang gets together in the next book. Can't wait for the next book!
Although this book didn’t follow the last book long, it was good and transported the reader in the Hawaiian was if thinking and how they honor their codes of living.
I thouht this book should go to the Midknight series. Not the WEHO series as the Cat character was on WEHO and involved with someone else. I was a little lost even though it was a great story.
This series never disappoints and this book is no different. The storyline and characters were fantastic and engaging. I would definitely recommend this book.
