Van Sciver first caught the comic world's eye with his irreverent indie title CYBERFROG and stints on NEW X-MEN and THE FLASH: IRON HEIGHTS, but it was the landmark GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH mini-series with writer Geoff Johns that put him permanently at the top of fans' list.
No longer working for DC, in 2018 Van Sciver announced that he would instead produce his own comics, beginning with a crowdfunded comic entitled CYBERFROG: BLOODHONEY featuring his early character CyberFrog, for which he raised over $1,000,000 on the crowdfunding site Indiegogo.
I'm would've been happy to let "Uncle Ethan" work on this book for a few more years until it turned into the The Lord of the Rings of comic books, but I'm not sure the market would bear it, and lord knows the comics environment is needlessly charged these days, so there were "reasons" to get this out sooner. As such, this is a three part comic book which serves really to introduce a story yet to come. Some call it a "cliffhanger" but it feels more like prologue.
Still, I loved it. The art is just heart-breakingly beautiful. I don't know enough to say "Van Sciver is at the top of his game"—I found one of his "My Struggle" portfolios from 10 years ago and I'd have to examine it more closely—but I can say this is the best comic book art I've ever seen, at least in terms of detail and expressiveness and color (courtesy the always impressive Kyle Ritter).
Besides art, Van Sciver has a real command of comic-book story telling. The origin of Cyberfrog is told in punchy, sci-fi bubbles that manage to convey emotion along with exposition. I felt the introduction of Heather Swain could've used more pages, but the ones that were there were dynamite. The arrival of the Swarm is chilling (and the organic nature of their spaceships put me in mind of Buckaroo Banzai, only non-comedic and vastly more detailed) and Cyberfrog's eventual defeat at their hands feels "weighty".
I don't know how he's going to get the earth, and Heather, out of this mess.
Hands down, the highest-quality comic book I've ever seen. Even the lettering, by Somni, is great. Like the rest of the book, it is done with amazing attention to detail and quality in places where most comic books go for a kind of perfunctory legibility. I expect to read this again and again.
Alex Jones said they were putting chemicals in the water that turn the fricking frogs gay, but there are no gay frogs in this book at all. 0/10 would grift again
I backed this on Indiegogo and as an avid fan of Ethan Van Sciver's work throughout his career, this did not disappoint. The art is phenomenal here and its a throwback to older, better comics styling and story writing, which I appreciate. The colors are amazing as well and overall I am glad I backed this. When it finally was done and delivered, I waited for awhile to read it. I just finished it and now I want more. Such a great book from an amazing team. Hope more is on the way!
I ordered the team up variant cover version, this book was beautifully drawn, lots of exciting action and combat visuals. Dynamic and interesting characters. Post Apocalyptic has been done, but not like this. The setting and the care in which the aftermath was portrayed left me invested in the heroes plight and wanting to see and read more!
Just received this in the mail today. Was happy to help fund and receive the largest crowd funded comic book of all time. It took over a year to be finished and mailed out. This ends in a cliff hanger which implies there are further comics, I was really looking forward to cyber frog fighting off the alien invasion. I hope after this first comic that EVS can hire a few helping hands to get more of these done in the future. I would be happy to see this go on for several comics assuming each one doesn’t take over a year.
I read the chromium version of this book. Not sure if it’s any different than this one.
Decided to check this one out because I seem to really like animal mc books like Usagi, tmnt, mouse guard, Scrooge.
This was just plain fun. The art was amazing throughout. The characters are cool looking. The baddies make it feel like a horror book with the honey blood oozing out of the victims.
Spectacular Art Review of the original Chromium cover edition (2019) [there are several later variant cover editions]
The spectacular line art and coloring are the overwhelming features here and pretty much offset the somewhat downhearted feeling given by a cliff-hanger ending. The abruptness of the Part 3 conclusion is also exaggerated by the bonus portfolio section of sketch art and alternate cover variants. These are great to have when they feel like an actual bonus but when the story feels cut short at their expense then it feels like padding. Still, the quality of the overall production for an independent is very impressive and the chromium cover art (which can't be captured by the GR cover image) is really stunning.
I picked up Cyberfrog Bloodhoney as I have been interested in the recent increased activity of independent crowd-funding of self-published comic books, graphic novels, novels and novel translations via the Kickstarter, Indiegogo and Hooandja platforms.
Very few minor flaws in the script do not bring down the story or art in this very well-paced and expertly executed story. Easily one of the top 5 comics of the past year, I'm looking forward to Rekt Planet.
NO SPOILERS: CYBERFROG BloodHoney has fantastic art, coloring and lettering. Seriously the best art Ethen Van Sciver has done in his life. The story was compelling and fast paced. For the price of the book, the 'extras' provided a good value.
This book is kind of a 'retelling' of CYBERFROG'S origin in the first act, and then the reader is thrust into the new story. If you read the original 90's books, BloodHoney doesn't retcon anything, so you're all good. And if you've never read the original comics, don't worry, you don't need to read anything prior to jumping in. You're caught up quickly and given every thing you need to know in the first few pages.
I like the call backs to classic CYBERFROG characters from the Harris Comics and Hall of Heroes days. I don't want to spoint anything, but if you like shiny covers with fun 90's fast paced action - Cyberfrog Bloodhoney is for you.
If you are into horror with a 90s twist then you'll like this book. You can read the plot line synopsis from other places so I won't repeat them here and you wont see any spoilers.
In terms of the actual physical book itself, the art work is second to none. Great linework by EVS and beautiful colours by Kyle.
There was an issue with the first pressing internal pages 'fluting' where you get a wavy effect. This was apparently due to the paper being too thin to handle the ink. The thin paper was apparently chosen due to the limitations of the binding of the chromium covers. Later versions of this book have resolved this issue and also included the separate ashcan in the back.
Definitely worth picking up along with issue #2 which is currently being fulfilled. But be prepared for a long wait for issue #3 as the artist likes to take his sweet time drawing these books.
This was an engaging introduction to the characters and world of CyberFrog. As an introduction, we are given clues about why each of three main characters has the attitude and behaviors they do, so I expect that will be important as the story deepens in volume 2 and beyond. The art is absolutely gorgeous. The detail is astonishing, and the colors are beautiful.
I initially backed the crowdfunding campaign for my grandsons, but as I watched Ethan draw bits of the story on YouTube, I ended up also backing it to get a copy for myself. I'm a book/story person, not a comic person, so that's saying something. Watching him draw Heather Swain's amazing hair is magic.
We are looking forward to Rekt Planet to begin to really get into the meat of the story.
Great story, absolutely fantastic art. One of the absolute best comic pros out there making everyone jealous, as evidenced by the review bombing of angry soyboy losers. You can definitely tell which reviews are by biased people that never even read the comic. They just hate him because he's a conservative Christian and they're all ghey af with too much estrogen making them mentally unstable lol. Ignore the sobbings, this book is high quality and worth every penny. Marvel & DC wished they still had people with this level of talent.
Two stars for the art, but the writing is bland and generic. Ethan Van Scriver works best when he's paired to create the artwork with someone who can write or knows the basics of developing an engaging story.
I was hoping after reading warts and all, that I would enjoy this.... sadly I didn't. It was underwhelming and completely boring. The ONLY thing good about it was the art, the story not so much.
