Bjorn’s Berserkers was a respected and flourishing mercenary company. Founded by Bjorn Tovesson I, it was now commanded by his son, Bjorn Tovesson II. Commander Tovesson wanted nothing more than to eventually pass on the Berserkers to his son, Bjorn Tovesson III.
But young Bjorn had a different destiny in mind. He didn’t want a future of fighting aliens and risking death on some distant planet. As a high school student, Bjorn had everything he could hope for—he was the star quarterback, he had a beautiful cheerleader girlfriend, he was surrounded by loyal friends, and top colleges were courting him. Despite his father’s protests and refusal to help Bjorn reach his dream, Bjorn had a future free of the death and loss inherent to mercenary life.
One fateful afternoon in the Alaska wilderness changed everything, though, when a bear attack left Bjorn maimed. Bjorn’s dreams were shattered, and his life crumbled around him. Can he pick up the pieces and find a new way forward, while still trying to avoid the life of a merc? When his destiny comes calling, will Bjorn continue trying to escape it, or will he learn to embrace it?
What a fun read from beginning to end. Bjorn’s Beserkers top man had a very interesting start as a teen and was very set against the mercenary trade. The events that lead him to alter that view are enjoyable to read.
Excellent book, written for young adults but suitable for all ages! Discover how Bjorn Tovesson the 3D became what he is, a very successful military commander and a great best of a nice guy!
We've seen Bjorn Tovesson III, his father, and grandfather before. We've seen Bjorn’s Berserkers and know a lot about their future. That, and what we know of the Four Horsemen Universe (4HU) leaves a narrow place to put any new stories. The solution is a Young Adult novel that shows us what formed the youngest Bjorn.
Don't run away because I said "Young Adult." Like the others in the 4HU Frontiers novels is a YA novel, but that manifests in the fact that the mercenaries don't drop F-bombs all over the place and the main characters are young. But the problems are generally problems that most of us have faced (or variants of them) that the young person is facing for the first time. One of the great things about YA novels is that unless the author screws it up there WILL be character development. Spoiler: He didn't screw it up.
There's plenty of action, a solid plot, and characters that grow and change, all written well enough that it kept me awake to finish it. It's a solid entry into the 4HU, and you can pick it up and read it without having read any of the others. I don't have a snappy wrap-up, so all I can do is tell you to go get it.
I really enjoyed this origin story for Bjorn Tovesson 3, leader of Bjorn's Berserkers. Well written, and with an excellent eye for detail, I found this book a delight to read.
What a rousing good read! It gives you a good feel for the world from which Bjorn came, and what shaped his entrance into the ranks of the family business. It is fast paced and grabs you from the start, with some laugh out loud moments.
