With a serial killer on the loose, the baffling mystery of Aiden’s past, and their tenuous budding romance, Aiden and Fouchard tread through a world of magic and myth on padded shoes, terrified to stir up something neither can control or defeat.
Aiden Mercer’s life now centers around lounging on the sunny beaches of his adopted country with a beer in one hand and a coffee in the other while admiring the local male population. After a rough life as a respected detective in DC, playing it cool shouldn’t be too hard, right? With the magical community on his case and dead bodies piling up around town, the responsibility of finding their killer seems fated to fall on him and deny him of his easy living.
Then there is Naël.
Cantankerous merman Naël Fouchard's life is focused on bringing up and protecting his little sister. When DNA found at the scene of the murders mark him as the prime suspect, Naël seeks out the help of Aiden, whose reputation as a detective grossly belies his lazy lifestyle and apparent lack of ambition.
The chemistry between the strong, stoic Naël and the easygoing Aiden is undeniable, no matter how many walls Aiden builds.
If this unlikely pair can’t come to terms with their feelings for each other long enough to catch the killer, their emotional turmoil might yet allow the murderer to kill them instead.
Of Magic & Scales is book 1 in the Of Magic & Sales series.
I read this book because I wanted a story set in Portugal, and that was what I got, so I'll take it as a win.
It was okayish, like the idea was there, but the execution sometimes just didn't work. Aiden gave me Grimm the TV Show vibes, where he can see magical creatures for what they are, even though he is not one (?). But, he was all over the place with his feelings for Nael and his dislike for magicals. Nael and his repetitive Mr. Mercer were weird, and the mystery was too mysterious and didn't make sense.
Also, we never learned what type of magical Aiden is, and I don't know, I care enough to read 3 more books in this series just to find out, maybe I’ll give the next one a go just to see.
Aiden dislikes all things magic. His experiences with it haven’t been successful. He sees what kind of creatures the magical are and he’s tired of it. On the run from his last encounter he settles in Portugal. Where he hopes his days of being touched by magic are done. Deep down he knows he’s got some kind of magic but burying his head in the warm sand helps him forget that. Then he meets Naël. A gorgeous merman who captures his heart without even trying.
A nice low key story about love and magic. Great characters and the world building was very easy to fall into. This story had a nice texture (for lack of a better word) for me. Good writing, with an overall feel good vibe. And to put fears to rest, no mermen were turned into sushi.

Deliciously scrumptious! A sexy new series full of magic, mayhem and merman! I thoroughly loved this new world and characters. I enjoyed the suspense and the romance woven in I can’t wait to dive deeper into the characters and uncover more about this new world.
Loved this seaside mystery. Easy read. Keeps you guessing. Only reason I gave 4 stars was at times I would skip over some of the descriptive details. I must admit they were beautifully written though.
So really good but now I have questions and want more. What is Aiden? IS there another book? What is going to happen to Nael and Aiden? What about Nael’s sister? Will Aiden ever come to terms with who he is? Who is he reallY? Who is trying to hurt Aiden? So many unanswered questions.
Aiden is running scared to me. He is denying who he is and because of this doing something he isn’t. He isn’t a barista really. He is a good PI and he left it because of unfortunate incidents with magical beings. He is insecure and smart but also in serious denial. When he first meets Nael he isn’t too impressed with him. He finds him to be a bit arrogant. Little did he know he would be helping him with so many different things.
As magicals are disappearing, Aiden is visited by a witch. And now he is brought into the mystery of why and who is taking the magicals? This leads him to Nael’s door.
Nael who is protective of his sister. Nael who comes off as arrogant but is really just a nice guy underneath his arrogance and when he razzes Aiden it is a hoot. These two have some serious chemistry and the heat sizzles off of them. To me seeing them not act at first on the attraction especially with Nael’s sister around is great. They get to learn about one another. And Nael’s sister is adorable with all her energy and sweetness.
The story is fast paced and interesting. It has you wonder what is going on and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I liked the mystery more than the romance because it was edgy and kept you in the moment.
This book has issues. Issues is a strong word, but it’s the best one to use here. It’s not a secret that I have a fondness for world building. If only this book had any. A host of magical creatures live in this world alongside humans and humans just don’t know? Humans and magical folk can breed, in some cases, and merrow DNA is on register with the army and the local police force, so how well known are the paranormal races? It’s never made clear. At all. The world feels more like it’s made on the spot with rules being thrown out like scarves to cover any questionable gaps.
Speaking of gaps, for the first 15% of this book, I had no idea Aiden was a detective/private investigator/what have you. None. It was only when a witch came to ask Aiden to help with the murders that there was any indication Aiden was anything other than a coffee shop owner. It didn’t feel like it was meant to be a shock; it felt like it might have been forgotten until that moment. Aiden talks about the magical folk like he’s never had anything to do with them, but he waltzes into the magical city like he’s been there a dozen times before.
this was amazing... i honestly wasnt sure if i would like it when i first started it.. it was a bit slow and weird and odd talk and i was like ok.. lets keep going.. merman! lol so i kept going.. and im glad i did because now i have all kinds of questions and cant wait to read book 2 to see if i find out the answers.. it is wonderful.. and interesting and i enjoyed this a lot.
Do you love a really well written story with a serial killer, murder, danger, mystery, the paranormal- as well as a sexy MM romance? Well that’s what you will find between the covers of this sublime story. Natalina Reis delivers yet another wonderful book- and having read all her works to date, I can honestly say that this is one of my favourites of hers, so far. Aiden and Nael are such great characters- their chemistry is intense, adding an extra element of spice t the story. With Aiden’s past and the fact that Nael is a merman grabbed my attention right from the get-go. Then throw in the serial killer aspect, with an intriguing storyline, some suspense, danger, and dramatic developments- and I was hooked! I read this story in one sitting as I couldn’t put it down till I’d read every last word. Looking forward to more from Ms. Reis!
Well, this is a hard book to rate. I love me some mermen romance and this sounded SO promising. However, ultimately I think I was a bit disappointed by the execution of the story and the writing.
Aiden used to be a detective in DC when a case went wrong and he walked away from that life. Now, he lives in Portugal and and owns a cafe and wants nothing to do with any magical beings. Unfortunately, although he tries to avoid magical beings, they keep finding him. One in particular wants his help to figure out who is killing magical people, and so does a certain merman who wants to make sure that he isn't blamed for the murders - Nael.
I think the thing that hurt the story most for me is that this story was told entirely from Aiden's POV and honestly, I didn't really like him. He's immature (he thinks "bonk me" and "boobs" and I'm like, really? Are you 16?), and he's pretty brash with Nael yet also has poor self-esteem and questions why Nael is with him (seriously, it's literally the third to last page and Aiden suddenly starts thinking he's only good for sex and questions everything about their relationship).
As far as the storytelling goes, once Aiden and Nael start getting into a relationship, Aiden doesn't seem to be actively working to make sure Nael isn't accused of the murders. He's attacked by magic but just lets a week go by before he thinks more about what's going on? I don't know - there was just no sense of urgency to prove Nael innocent and find the killer through most of the story, and usually when there is mystery and some sort of criminal case, there is that feeling of urgency to find answers.
Also, never got anything from Nael's POV, and I wish we could have. I wish we could have read about what made Nael fall for Aiden, because I just didn't see it. Also, I wish there had been more with Nael actually in his merman form. It just didn't seem to have any purpose for the story? And I think the author was going for snarky chemistry and making Nael the grumpy one, but Nael constantly insulting Aiden didn't work for me entirely, either. (and everyone calling everyone else Mr. Last Name Here was just weird to me)
So yeah, I struggled with this story. I think it has a great premise - a world with magic and shifters, and we have Aiden, who is clearly a pretty powerful magical being with so many unanswered questions about his past and what he is (I was thinking succubus to be honest) but that part of the story gets lost.
2 and 1/2 stars. I can’t give a book a higher rating than this when I could barely tolerate the main character. Aiden was a sarcastic, argumentative, bigoted and quick tempered. His entire attitude really put a damper on the book for me. The only reason I didn’t give up after a few chapters was it was that except for Aiden all the other characters of any consequence where engaging. How Nael fell in love with Aiden was beyond my comprehension. Obviously, I finished it and thought it was well written. I’m sorry I couldn’t rate it higher.
Of Magic and Scales by Natalina Reis is a quirky story that is MM romance and is full of magic and mayhem, suspense and romance and has many paranormal characters but the man man is a merman. I really enjoyed the world and characters that Natalina has created. It is a fun and easy read that is well written and interesting. I found myself laughing out loud with this feel good romance.
Aiden thought moving far away he could escape magic and magical creatures but his reputation precedes him and he can’t deny what he has tried to shut out and he soon finds himself tangled up in murder and mayhem.
I enjoyed the journey and look forward to reading more.
Adien and Cristina have a great chemistry working together. They made me laugh within the frist chapter of this book. Adien is able to see magical CREATURES. These creatures are now been murder by someone who is it. Adien in now working with Foruchard to find out who. This book has me gripped the writer really knows how to pull a reader in I read this book within a few hours and would read it again in a heartbeat.
I really enjoyed reading this fantastic, charming, grab-you-by-the-feels, engaging, delightful, simmering, and totally awesome start to an intriguing new series.
I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.
A book set in a Portugese beach town will always catch my attention and the addition of murder and magic made this story a must read. The unexpected setting is truly fabulous and the blend of high fantasy and urban fantasy is great.
Some of the tropes are a little predictable. Like all fantasy heroes, Aiden is an unlikely hero (he’s an ineffective cafe owner/beach bum) and he’s full of attitude in a way that will be a little too familiar to fans of characters like Charley Davidson or Mercy Thompson. I feel like there are more than a few nods to Patricia Briggs in this story and not much of the world building feels terribly fresh. It’s a fun and exciting read but I found it difficult not to draw comparisons between this story and other well known series.
Part supernatural murder mystery and part romance, I enjoyed Aiden’s investigation more than the romance. The pacing is a little slow at times but the mystery is exciting and the supernatural characters are well drawn. The romance feels a little clumsy at times. There isn’t much sexual tension between Aiden and Nael and the low heat instalove didn’t quite work for me. I think there is actually supposed to be a little more heat but I just didn’t find some of Aiden and Nael’s intimacy very sexy. Kids in romance are difficult and Nael’s sister brings a family feel to the story. She also kills some of the passion between the two men.
While I enjoyed the story overall, I really did not get on with the writing. The writing feels a bit clunky with some moments over described, others under described and too many moments that are told when they needed to be shown. Aiden’s first person narrative voice doesn’t always feel consistent and I found it difficult to feel like I knew or understood him as a person.
𝕆𝕗 𝕄𝕒𝕘𝕚𝕔 & 𝕊𝕔𝕒𝕝𝕖𝕤 by @reisnatalina was a wonderful surprise from a new-to-me author! This story, set in Portugal, was a unique twist on fae and all the other mystical creatures you can think of with a vivid backdrop and a VERY interesting plot.
RATING: ☕ ☕ ☕ ☕ 1/2
Aiden is an ex-detective running a coffee shop in Portugal. After a near death encounter with a troll, he ran off to Portugal to attempt to run from his magical ties and pretend to be just a normal human. But when a serial killer of magical beings draws him out of retirement, his carefully constructed denial of his unknown heritage is thrown into a blender.
Nail is a wealthy Canadian/US citizen living in Portugal with his younger sister. When he is labeled as a suspect in the crimes because of her merman DNA, he goes to Aiden to get him to help clear his name.
These two were so sweet, obnoxious, kinda steamy, and funny. I loved their banter, although the insecurities grew tiresome at points. But watching their growth and relationship bloom was so rewarding!
I loved how the author introduced species and magical places with ease, like we should know what they are, and then follow it by brief descriptions. We were able to learn a LOT without being overwhelmed. This is book 1 in the series so many questions still need to be answered and I can't wait to find them out!
What I Think: As evidenced from above, I have no business summarising anything which would explain why my English Teacher in secondary school always laughed at my summaries. It is supposed to be short, non? This is my first review with Hot Tree Publishing. Thank you so much for the opportunity for ’tis an honour. It is also my first time reading this Authoress and her intro dedicated to her country simply delighted me! Its the little things, you know. Easy to please. Me. Okay, let’s do this! The opening flooded me with curiosity and suddenly this tale wasn’t being speed read to meet a deadline. It was being speed read as I once more solidified plans towards becoming more self sufficient so I can have all the time to read such lovelies as this. And we know I don’t get curious unless with tales so I badly had to know. Aaand, I haven’t seen a lot of tales with water folk (I might be slightly obsessed with them. Just a tad). I don’t even like arrogance but Nael wears it so well that even I can’t decide if Aiden should hit him or kiss him. I’m sorry for being so unhelpful, Aiden. But not that sorry because Aiden’s ability is causing some sexual confusion in my head. All the talk of tails swishing mesmerisingly has me mesmerized and yet, oh goddess, surely fish aren’t sexy, are they or is that speciest of me? Aiden is sweet and would like the world to think he’s plain dumb but nothing could be farther from the truth. Not only does he not know what sort of magical he is, he has abilities that pop up just when he needs them. And he keeps bumping into Nael all over the place. A Nael that seems to have a darkness I don’t know about as he becomes suspect of crimes greater than causing dubious sexual attraction. Aiden’s powers just keep surprising us both as they come unannounced which I find unfair. Shouldn’t they be polite enough to come with a shriek, instead of leaving us both bewildered again and again? Now, I’m pursuing what he could be as all sorts of possibilities flash through my mind. I’m so suspicious that I’m even eyeing Christina, his trusty side kick. With every fish tail that appears though, my mind keeps wandering off to one issue in particular. Do they stand balanced on it behind their glamor or even walk about with them? Do they float, glide, use them like feet or is the glamour a true shape they take on? Questions and questions spill into my mind as Aiden digs himself deeper into things that should be better left alone. Between his curiosity and capacity to enrage the frightening creatures around him, I wonder who will get him first. Nael, can you please get your smoking hot, arrogant, self functional so we can protect Aiden? Portugal just got moved up my bucket list for it seems to be a place made for those of us not yet too afraid to wonder. The next time any magical teases Aiden about not being human, I will chew beignets and spit out nails! How much teasing can a person take? And by person, I mean me. This Authoress is so chuckling to herself as I race to the end of this tale in the hope of laying bare all secrets. Have I mentioned I don’t like secrets, intentional or not? I feel as if Joe would have deduced the answer by now with his hyperactive and all – too – well – seeing hungry eyes. I’m running out of ideas here and reluctant to go to the g-word, but with all these abilities turning up, what else could Aiden be? (oh, don’t know Joe? You’ll find out! Imagine a very proper, smuggy chuckle at this point). I couldn’t believe these places actually exist, with names as magnificent as the structures described, which led to a side online investigative trip to admire the stunning architecture! Aiden sounds so toppy which doesn’t fit with his beach bum facade but adds to the complexity of his lovely self which leaves me looking forward to the erotica about to blast off between him and his Merman, sorry, Merrow. His arrogant yet oh so tender, giant Merrow. I was about falling in crush with Christina when Taz shows up, complete with red curls filling up her broad brimmed hat, and the rest as they say is history. It’s lovely to see how Aiden comes undone under love and seeing all his sides. Jealous Aiden is hella sexy and flustered Nael is simply the cutest thing ever but then the descent to my favorite moment begins when Aiden starts lying to himself. Oh dear, something really epic this way comes! I’m about to kill Nael, then smack some sense into Aiden. This game Nael is running makes me suspicious of him and I’m worried he’s just using Aiden who’s, um, appendage isn’t letting enough blood remain where he needs it up top. The Ru-veal Yourself scene had me breathless and reading through my fingers. One of those intimacies that isn’t much but has me feeling like a voyeur because it was every inch as sweet and otherworldly as I expected it to be. The investigation gets underway and I’m holding my breath, uncertain if I’m worried about Aiden or the way his body keeps spitting out abilities that were never exhibited even as I’m cheering wildly as he makes Nael say things plainly. We are not fond of this verbal game at all. Now, I’m worrying about Aiden and his memory lapses even as I fall head over heels in love with Aiden for knowing a fact that most bibliophiles known- a good book is equal to amazing sex and vice versa. Ever wondered why nerds are so sexy? Now you do. You’re welcome. I fell head over heels for Nael as more of that soft, sweet and tender center shows just as he explains why the fear of falling in love is what makes it worth it. The peace did not last long, of course (have you met Aiden?), and I began pacing as innocents get entangled in things we don’t fully understand yet and hoping that Aiden trusts himself enough to let go and protect his found family, even as I ached to be there with a proper sniper’s rifle by his side. My head has apparently gone with the fairies in the magic oozing from this tale. My sigh of relief at the end did not soothe the fact that the biggest question was left unanswered. Thank the goddess the 2nd part is already in my grabby paws!
Verdict? A beautiful, meandering walk through beauty and stone, myth and reality that is the perfect frame for a love so simple, yet so encompassing!
If this lovely and winkingly naughty book doesn't inspire you to immediately book travel to Portugal and find a little cafe like Aidan's, then you're possibly dead. Loved all of the characters with a special affinity with the gorgeous witch! The entire story flows as beautifully and enticingly as a merman's tail. Hugely recommend this sweet book!!

Of Magic & Scales Review MMy Thoughts and Confessions:
I can't remember a time in the last two years when I have struggled to write a review so much. I do NOT lack the gift of gab, as anyone who has ever read one of my reviews knows. For some unknown reason though, my thoughts won't transfer the way I want them to. I have written and rewritten this review countless times over the last four days. I thought I had finally gotten a good enough review down and for some reason, it didn't write over/ transfer the previous one. So what I thought was saved wasn't, and when I went to post it to my blog, it was my previous review. One I was unsatisfied with. **sigh... My muse is self-isolating far away from me. However, I enjoyed this story and the author deserves some accolades for her work, so here goes...
Confessions first: I wanted to add one of the main characters to the growing list of murder victims, in the story, for his hateful name-calling and overall bashing of the other MC's business, lifestyle choices, and pretty much anything that would come up. Hog tieing the merman and whipping him with a peach tree switch seemed like an ideal punishment to me, but the big jerk face could swim faster than me, so I never would stand a chance, but dang if I wouldn't give it a good try.
I loved the paranormal aspect and how myths of deities combined with legends of supernatural beings. I enjoyed the author's take on how the mundane could live side by side with supernatural beings. I loved how some would meet and fall in love, while others would hate and despise the mixing of such bloodlines, the magicals anyway, because for the exception of a few, most humans didn't know magicals existed. I found the secondary characters to be just as great as the two MCs. I simply adored Naël's little sister, Vee.
In this story, one man, an ex-detective from the states, is asked by a witch to help solve a string of murders that soon turns into much more than just murder. A merman is the suspect of this and other such crimes from the past. It is up to the ex-detective, turned cafe owner, with a desire to be a beach bum, who despises magical beings, Aiden, to solve the crime(s). Then, clear the name of the hot AF "god-like" merman, Naël, who can't seem stop insulting Aiden, his business, and anything that will get a rise out of the ex-detective...YUP, that kind of "RISE" too! So, it had that enemies to lovers vibe going for it.
I enjoyed the world-building, the pacing was spot on, and there were plenty of roMMantic scenes to satisfy even the most voracious sWWordplay appetite. The one thing I struggled with throughout was Naël's incessant need to name call and talk down to Aiden, especially after they established their romance. I finally concluded that to work out all their kinks, no pun intended - maybe, they would need to both unload their baggage and that would take time. So, I am thrilled to know there is another book coming. I am looking forward to hearing/ reading the next story.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Other Worlds Ink.
Of Magic and Scales is a great M/M fantasy, romantic thriller by Natalina Reis that had me captivated from the very beginning, right up to the very end. It is my first read by this author and I’m pretty sure it won’t be my last as I enjoyed this book very much. I do like a good M/M romance but this one is that little bit different in that one of the main characters, Nael, is a merman (or merrow as they prefer to be called). If, like me you are wondering how to pronounce Nael’s name it’s pronounced Nuh/l/ (It was annoying me to the point that I messaged the author to ask!. Aiden Mercer has been able to see magicals since he can remember and he’s not their biggest fan since he’s had a few unpleasant run in’s with some of them. That all changes when Nael Fourchard enters into his life. Many magicals are being murdered and Nael wants Aiden to help him find out who the killer is. Added to this is the incredible sexual chemistry between the 2 men although Aiden finds Nael very rude and abrupt and doesn’t like him very much. What follows is a great tale of intrigue and mystery, delving into the world of witches, fairies, trolls and many other magical creatures as Aiden and Nael try to find the killer, putting their lives in great danger on many occasions. This book has some great secondary characters, in particular Aiden’s assistant at his coffee shop and especially Nael’s younger sister Vee. I absolutely adored Vee. She has absolutely no filter and is hilarious. This is a great read but has left some questions still to be answered (I’m not going to give any spoilers), so I’m really hoping that there is more to come from these fantastic characters.
Aiden Mercer is an American who has left the DC area to form a new life in Portugal. He wants an easy-going lifestyle, so he opened a coffee shop and spends as much time as he can by or on the beach watching the male population. Aiden’s not as regular as he wants to seem. Since he was a child, he can see members of the magical community.
He doesn’t see many magical beings where he lives and in his coffee shop on a normal day. But one day, after a morning run and a stop at the local bar, he gets a visit from a witch named Taz. Taz tells him about deaths in the magical community. She wants his help to try and solve them. The only clue that they have is that there is merfolk DNA at all the crime scenes. As a former private investigator, Aiden is curious.
Naël Fouchard is a merman that lives in Cascais raising his younger sister. With the suspect having merfolk DNA, Naël seeks out Aiden’s help as well. Although Naël was quite rude to Aiden in previous encounters, he needs Aiden’s help. The two men realize that they have ridiculous chemistry. Their relationship blossoms as they work to uncover the real identity of the serial murderer. Can they solve the murder before it’s too late?
Of Magic and Scales is an amazing story with magical beings. The characters are brought to life by author Natalina Reis. I found myself carried on by the story and cheering Aiden and Naël along in their quest to prove Naël’s innocence.
What I Loved: The murder mystery. It was really well-done and had me on the edge of my seat throughout the book. Natalina Reis is no doubt a talented writer and her prose was very elegant.
What I Liked: The premise and the world-building, even if there were some plot points I wished had been better explained or expanded on.
I liked Aiden, despite him constantly putting himself down and a bit immature regarding his issues with magical beings. He was relatable and I was invested in his story. I also liked Christina, she was so much fun, and her banter with Aiden was a highpoint for me.
What I Didn't Like: Unfortunately, I wanted to clobber Naël repeatedly throughout the book with my Kindle and couldn't get past my first impression of him. I just couldn't figure how Aiden found him attractive; yes, he had the looks, but there's more to life than that.
Overall, even if the romance portion of the book fell a bit flat for me—mostly because of Naël, I like arrogant men, but he was conceited and rude—the mystery portion was more than enough to keep my interest, so I have no trouble recommending it.
*** Copy provided to Bayou Book Junkie for my reading pleasure, a review wasn't a requirement. ***
This is a juicy fantasy thriller if I’ve ever read one and I’ve been excited to read it. I found this book to be entertaining, witty and a page-turner. With a serial killer on the run, a perplexed enigma about Aiden’s former life, Aiden and Fouchard must walk on eggshells through two different worlds between magic and myth where they’re not in power or seeking victory. Aiden Mercer has a beautiful life on the beach where he relaxes for a living especially after a life as a former respected detective. In the magical community, everybody is turning to him to solve the case of the serial killer on the loose to which he’d have to put his relaxation on hold again. Naël is an argumentative merman raising and keeping his sister safe from harm. As a suspect of these murders, he seeks out Aiden’s help to prove his innocence. Naël knows Aiden will be unstoppable and hardworking to prove his innocence. Naël and Aiden’s chemistry is secure and impassive but Naël is persistent while Aiden builds walls to keep him out. Their banter makes them vulnerable for a killer out to get them both.
I have yet to find a novel by Natalina Reis that I didn’t absolutely love and want to devour in one sitting, and Of Magic & Scales is no exception to the rule. I seriously love the way that Natalina can weave a tale full of magic and fable and make you feel as if you know these characters personally and are very much real. She makes me believe in the magic and I love the feelings I experience as I read her work! This is a MM romance so if that isn’t your thing don’t read but I bet it would make you a believer in the genre!
Of Magic & Scales is full of magic and adventure, laced with suspense and romance to break up the darkness of it all. I never can get enough of the characters that Reis creates but Aiden and Nael have a special spot in my heart for them and I am so hooked on their story. I love how the mystery is set up and can only hope that this means we will not only get more of this fabulous storyline but more of these characters that have sucked me in completely! I know I will be first in line to get my hands on the next one!
Mystery, magical beings, murder, intrigue and falling in love. I thought the concept and the plot of this story was delightful. The characters were enjoyable and likable. I enjoyed their banter and connection. I thought it was interesting to see Aiden struggle with his being a magical being, but not understanding what his magic was... just knowing he was different and wanting to not be. There was some really interesting twists and turns in this story and I enjoyed the read.
Aiden and Nael had me enjoying their interactions from their first exchange of banter. I loved how their relationship grew and the trust that was so hard to come by, really made a huge difference. They worked together to catch the murder and in the process create a 'found family' of very interesting characters.
This is book one of the Of Magic and Scales trilogy. This book does not end on a cliffhanger and it does give a HFN ending. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
I was gifted this book from Gay Romance Reviews and i freely give my honest opinion and review
Of Magic and Scales is a novel by Natalina Reis. This is my third novel by this author.
The premise caught my attention and I was not disappointed.
Aiden has started a new life in Portugal after moving from DC, where he hopes to start over and not seeing anything magical but things don’t go as planned when he meets a merman named Naël Fouchard.
With a serial killer on the loose the two work together in order to save Naël's sister.
Their first meeting is hilarious and laughed on the bus while reading that scene. Honestly, I read it a few times.
I love the two main characters, especially Aiden who is laid back and relaxed about life, while Naël is stoic.
It’s been a crazy few weeks, and it was amazing to read something that sucked me into the world from beginning to finish. I really hope that we get more of this world and these characters. I am not ready to say good-bye to them.
If you love the world of magic, mystery and great characters you will love Of Magic and Scale by Natalina Reis. The story follows Aiden a laid back person who is looking to relax and chill in life until he meets the stoic character of Nael.
Nael is a protector for his little sister but when he gets put as prime suspect in the murders which have been discovered he enlists the help of a unlikely character in Aiden, but Nael has a secret and will this affect their relationship if found out. Will they discover who is committing these hideous crimes you will have to read the book. The with the interaction of the secondary characters this makes for a really entertaining book.
The chemistry between these two characters is great from the first time they meet and the story is a great read. You will turning the pages frantically to get to the next chapter and the writing brings the characters to life. I really enjoyed this book and this is not the first book I have read by Natalina and will not be the last.
I have read several of Natalina’s books and always enjoy them. This one is no different. Aiden Mercer has moved far away from DC and actively tries to avoid magical creatures. To bad they need him and are going to get him to help. Magical creatures are being killed and a merman is being framed for the killings. Nael is what you might call rough around the edges. But man is he good looking. There is instant chemistry between the two. But the last things Aiden wants is another incident with a magical creature. Aiden can only fight his curiosity for so long before he gets involved in investigating the case. Could Aiden learn something about himself in the process and realize not all magical creatures are the same. He can’t judge them all on the acts of a few. This book was an interesting read. I enjoyed it a lot. Especially the bantering between Aiden and Nael. If M/M books aren’t your thing than this book isn’t for you. Congrats on another great book Natalina.
