To Be Your Girl

Rate this book
Staying away from Cade Renner is easier said than done—because he’s my brother’s best friend and my new roommate.

I know he’s trouble when I meet him—half naked, covered in tattoos, and kicking an anonymous girl out of his bed.

I’m not supposed to become his friend, and I definitely shouldn’t be thinking about him at night.

Especially after I meet Adam—he is the perfect gentleman and he wants to be my boyfriend. To him, I am a sweet, innocent girl not to be defiled.

But I’m done being innocent.

However you want to refer to sexy times, there were quite a few of them in this book, and boy were they steamy! The two main characters were Haley and Cade. Haley moves in with her older brother and his best friend Cade who live in a College town, though the guys graduated years ago. Haley is transferring to the nearby college to finish her degree. The brother, Tucker knows Cade can’t keep a woman for more than a few days and treats girls like crap. So Tucker makes Cade Promise to not mess with his sister.

Of course Cade is attracted to Haley from the get go, but fights it and Haley starts dating another guy right away, but as you can probably guess, something happens between Haley and the boyfriend and Cade displays his jealousy and they eventually end up together. I will try not to give away any spoilers but want to let you know how I felt about the plot. So here goes. The brother is not home a lot, then he goes away on business for a while so they have a lot of time together to become friends and are very passionate.

I like the fact that it is not insta-love and they do fall deeply which I can see, and it can happen pretty quickly for any two people that are together that much in your early twenties and sleeping together and there is a lot of passion. Though as the story progresses there seems to be one too many things that end up getting in their way.

I mean I can see the brother because that was coming from the beginning, then just when you think they might get back together they don’t and then again just when you think they might work it out, something else comes up. And then I won’t spoil here but even more happens and I think it should have just been workable from that point somehow. Because I didn’t like part of the ending.

That said, I really did like the romance between Haley and Cade and I was even crying at one point. The book held my interest throughout so I give it a 3.8 stars (rounded up to 4). For true love. 💋💖

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I read a lot. Like many of you. And we all know the whole 'manwhore' theme in contemporary romances is super prevalent. I mean, who doesn't want to read of the woman who cures a hottie of his bed-hopping ways, right?

But it's getting old for me. The whole roommate, older brother's best friend who the heroine sees and hears screwing girls every night. but then after a few cute conversations and some passing chemistry, she finds herself in those same sheets. Falling in love and expecting the moon. And we are dumb enough to expect it with her, right? WRONG!

It's Fucking boring! And I don't expect it anymore. I expect heartache and I expect that I will hate the heroine for being such a dumb ass! I expect venereal diseases and unexpected pregnancies. Bed bugs and catfights. When books start with a manwhore they should include some nitty-gritty. Not panty melts, but crotch itch and other unpleasantness in nether regions ailments.

Point is, a very promiscuous hero, who has always bed hopped, is more than likely, in real life, kinda gross.

As for this book? Snoozer... with a dose of loser!

After they separate and see each other again after a year and a half (where she was celibate and he dated several women) He goes to break up with his present partner and returns to her and they fuck right away. How romantic!!!

NOT!

I don't find this romantic. I would be nuts asking myself why I was celibate while he was fucking and trying to be with other women! I would be asking about his very current Ex... Not heartless after all! And mostly I would be asking "if he is like this with her, then what says he won't do this to me when he gets his fill?"

Ya... so NO to this book as a successful romance.

NO ME GUSTÓ

I thought I would really like this one but the Hero Cade really didn’t do anything for me. I mean he was a man whore for 3/4 of the book and then there’s of course a separation for stupid reasons and in that time period you have the always stupidly faithful heroine hasn’t slept with anyone since the hero, while he was out in relationships and obviously slept with them. It’s always the same. Why is the heroine always the insecure one who never moves on but the hero is off galavanting with other women? It just doesn’t work for me anymore.

This book was a pleasant surprise. I was in the mood for some smut, and this book delivered. I read it in one sitting and the characters had me captivated from the beginning. This is a roommates to lovers, slow burn erotica.
The author writes sex scenes extremely well, and while there were a decent amount of them, I loved every single one.
Haley moves in with her brother Tuck to complete college and ends up sparking a romance with is roommate Cade. Cade is an absolute dream boat, so sexy, and behind his muscle is a sweet, caring guy. I love that the author gave this character depth, with dreams and ambition.
I feel like some of the characters thrown in to the book either needed to have more of a story line or should've been left out. I understand having Tuck in there, but we know so little about him and even though things are going on in his life, we never get a deeper understanding of what's going on.
Adam was a nice distraction, but again, could've used more.
All in all this was really good and I loved it so much!

I loved this book from the moment Haley opened the door to Cade, hottie with muscles and tattoos (yes please). He’s a man whore who has a different girl almost every night and she knows his type. The days fly by with harmless flirting and delicious meals.

Haley ends up meeting her “dream man” in class and he has her completely smitten and that doesn’t go unnoticed by Cade who is trying to hide his jealously. Perfect dates turn into a disaster one night and Cade comes to the rescue, alcohol, and music has Cade and Haley showing their true feelings until Cade realize what’s happening so instead of being honest he decides to go the jerk route. Haley decides to forget him and give her dream man a second date only to have become her nightmare. Once Cade is able to come to his senses things turn out to be beautiful.

This was a bit boring. I read it as a filler read between all the fantasy I read in the beginning of the month. I don't have anything to say about it, I was very indifferent throughout and it didn't leave any impression on me. It's one of those typical early 2000's white cishet romances, which is not bad in itself, but it's something I'm slowly loosing interest in, and that's ok. There were a couple of things that bothered me, but apart from that a very average read.

Content/ Trigger Warnings- Alcohol, Ableism (terms like 'crazy' etc are used), Gambling, Abusive and Neglectful Parents, Child Abandonment

Note- I have tried to include all the content warnings that I noticed, but there is no guarantee that I haven’t missed something.

I often find with my books that I read, if I go in blind and don't know too much about the story, then my expectations aren't dashed and I can find myself enjoying it more than I probably would have - had I known what to fully expect. In Book #1 To Be Your Girl by Rae Kennedy we meet Hayley aka Hales who is transferring colleges and going to live with her older brother Tucker and his roommate Cade. We didn't get a full insight into why she transferred and I wonder if there was a reason but Hale moves in with her brother and his friend and starts attending the local college. Cade - her brother's best friend is a total manwhore and playboy as he has a different girl each night and he is sexy to boot. Since Hales can't have him, she ends up dating a guy in one of her classes Adam who seems like the perfect gentleman - it is a huge "emphasis" on the seems as his true colors start to show and he is total douchey. During this time nursing her broken heart and since her older brother seems to be away a lot at his girlfriend Ali's house - Hales and Cade start to fall into bed with one another and a romance starts to blossom. What will happen though when Tucker finds out and blows his top and then Cade is offered his dream job which means he has to move cities? Is this relationship over before it even started or will the pair find their way back to one another despite countless protests from friends and family? Will Hales get a chance to be Cade's Girl or have they missed their opportunity and moved on to other people? Find out in Book #1 To Be Your Girl by Rae Kennedy.

I love the brother's best friend trope and so was excited to read this. But everything about this didn't work for me. I did not get the point of Adam's story line. There was really no point in him being there or any of those things happening. Tucker, the brother, was literally only present when it fit into the plot. The rest of the time it was like he didn't exist (and as he was living with them, it's hard to imagine he was never there). Cade and Haley fell in lust and their relationship lasted all of a few weeks. I just didn't believe in their relationship or that they'd be holding a torch for each other when it basically was a fling more than anything. Also, I had a hard time with the writing. It was a lot of telling, very little showing. It felt like a lot of "I did this... It was fun... It looked like this... I went here..." It made it hard for me to connect with the story.

It was definitely a cute read. A lot of unnecessary angst too but it was expected. I mean it made in a sense that Haley wasn’t that sure of their relationship. Also as many say. A lot let me emphasize, a lot of sexy time.
I guess I’ve been reading too many NA books that I can’t give this more than 3.5 stars but got to admit that I’m super intrigued for the second book. Court and Tuck look like they’ll be a hoot. Specially since she’s gonna get married to someone else (I think) in a week. Now that’s gonna be a good story to read. Excited to know what happens there for sure.

Actually, this book has been waiting to be read on my Kindle for a looooong time... And I don't even know why took me so long!!
I liked this story a lot.
Haley goes to live with his old brother. It's closer to campus and cheaper so it is a good decision. Or that's what she thinks until she finds out she will be living with Cade. He will be their roommate, too.
And Cade is gorgeous. As in drop dead gorgeous. And he is not what I was expecting...
I'm this book you will find good characters, steamy scenes and romanticism, too.
I enjoyed it a great deal. And when I finished it, I couldn't stop smiling.

Good story, I just didn't like it

The story is told completely through Haley's POV. I preferred that. She starts off dating Adam who seems nice, but we soon find out that's not the case. For some inexplicable reason she forgives him and takes him back. That's where the story started to turn for me. His behavior was inexcusable but she didn't care and then things happen between them the exact way I thought they would.

Now I know women are going to swoon over Cade, but as a guy I have to say that he was pretty awful too. First he befriends her and I'm thinking okay. Then she tries to take it further and he literally screams and cusses at her to push her away. That's just awful and unnecessary. Then when her brother finds out he just walks away from her without even putting up a fight even though she is screaming and crying for him. He simply leaves her without even looking back. He starts dating someone else immediately. This is where I lost all respect for him. Multiple times when he doesn't get what he wants from Haley he hooks up with someone else. Trash. Something happens and he tries to get her back. She refuses and I'm relieved because she is right in her thinking because if he felt about her the way he says he does he never would have treated her the way he did. She leads him on a little bit before ultimately ending it. Some time passes and ofcourse they have a HEA, but it was rushed and very anticlimactic.

Ultimately I enjoyed the story but there were a lot of decisions made by the author that didn't sit well with me. Her brother thinking he's the hate keeper of her vagina? Nope. Trying to believe she's head over heels for Cade when she practically drools over every guy she's introduced to? Nope. One guy she gets so lost in staring at that she literally has to be shaken out of it. I understand that people in love will still find other people attractive but she goes on too much about it and it adds nothing to the story and only lessens the connection I feel between Cade and Haley. The fact that they spend as much time dating other people as they do each other is also not helping me buy that they are in love. Her staying celibate while their apart but him continuing to plow through girls? Nope. I may check out more by this author but I was disappointed that this turned out to be about 2 immature people who were seemingly obsessed with sex and no real connection.

Disclaimer: I received an Advance Reader Copy at no cost from the publisher/author. All opinions in my review are my own.

This book was splendidly addicting! It is a book that will grab your attention and not let you go. The author has an enjoyable writing style. Very fluid and easy to read but never bland or boring.

The pacing of the story is perfect. Everything felt so realistic, which I loved. Haley is in college and the reader really feels like they are right there with her. There is plenty of drama to keep things interesting and entertaining.

The characters were brilliant! I adored them. I really appreciated how relatable and realistic the characters were. The reader has no problem connecting with them and living through them through the pages. There was great character growth for Cade and Haley. I really loved the secondary characters. I adored the relationship that Haley had with her brother, Tuck. You could tell how fiercely he loved her.

I loved the slow-burn romance that starts off with Haley and Cade becoming friends. They spend a lot of time together after she moves in and get to know each other. It is such a great precursor for when their feelings start to grow. There are plenty of steamy moments and the two of them really fit well together. The sacrifice that Haley made for Cade was heartbreaking but so endearing.

Overall, this is a book that I absolutely could not put down. This book has characters that the reader immediately falls in love with. There is humor, steam, raw emotions, I mean this book has it all. I am unbelievably eager for the next book in this series! This is a new-to-me author that I am putting on my watch list.

Okay, wow! This is the read I’ve been craving for a while now. I haven’t read or enjoyed a NA romance this much in quite some time. In fact I’m not sure I’ve ever given one a 5 star rating before, I’d have to dig through the archives to find it if I did, for sure. I don’t know if it was just the right book at the right time (mood reader here ) but I loved everything about it. The writing, the plot, the pacing, CADE! *drools* It was sweet and sexy in all the right places and in all the right ways. I cannot fault a single thing!

One of the things I loved most (next to CADE ofc) was that there was just the right amount of drama to keep you hooked and turning those pages, not wanting to put it down. I often find that these types of reads are on the verge of being completely unrealistic or unbelievable, but not this one. It wasn’t at all over the top and I know that because I didn’t once roll my eyes!! (which I have a serious problem with sometimes lol).

Yeah there were a few common tropes and the odd cliche here and there but it all just worked. It’s books like this that are the reason we love those tropes in the first place. A great example of how to do these things well imo.

I really don’t want to go into anything specific about the plot, read the synopsis and if it’s a genre you enjoy then definitely read it! You can not possibly be disappointed! I can’t think of a single thing to say against it, I just absolutely loved it.

This book was provided by the author through Enticing Journey Book Promotions in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Rae Kennedy and Enticing Journey Book Promotions!

To Be Your Girl
is the first book in the To Be Yours series and tells the story of Haley and Cade.

To Be Your Girl is the first book I’ve read by Rae Kennedy and definitely not the last one! I really liked the story and the characters and it was really hard to put this book down. The story is fast paced and well written, you just want to know how the story is going to end!

I love the ‘brother’s best friend’ trope and this book was just amazing. Haley and Cade are different yet perfect for each other. I really liked that Cade was a chef, I think I’ve never read a Romance where the love interest is a chef.

To Be Your Girl is Rae Kennedy’s debut novel and I think she did a great job! I cannot wait to read the next book in the series, To Be Your Wife!

This was a really nice surprised. I really enjoyed this. I also love the name Cade! It has the usual dramatics, a bit too much towards the end which I thought was unnecessary. After sitting on this review and thinking about it, I had to drop a star for how ridiculous it was with that drama. There was already the drama with Tucker, her older brother, and with Adam and that would've sufficed. But to add a year and half gap and her "selflessly" giving him up so he can go chase his dreams. Really? It started bugging me when she winds up almost dying. He donates his blood for her to survive and yet she doesn't take him back ... because he left when her brother found out. I mean give the guy a break. Tucker is his best friend, it was probably confusing and hard for him and he honestly thought that he sucked as a human being. What irritated me was that she wouldn't take him back but Adam, who called her a tease and a c*** when she didn't sleep with him at first, she took back. Really? REALLY? Whatever. Happy ending but still

This was some entertaining chick lit/fluff - an enjoyable read, engaging and I didn’t want to put it down

While the premise quite cliche (girl moves in with brother after transferring universities, his best friend and roommate is the ‘bad boy’ who treats girls like crap and doesn’t do relationships but really has a soft spot), the characters were actually quite entertaining. Abd rge
total food porn moments courtesy of Cade’s being a chef didn't hurt either.

The writing could be improved upon, seeming a bit choppy/disjointed in places. I also have mixed feelings about where the plot went towards the end of the book, which seemed somewhat overdramatic/rushed.

I’m usually not the biggest romance reader, but if you enjoy NA romance this book is for you. I actually quite enjoyed that it’s a slow burn , Hayley and Cade becoming friends first, not insta-love.

I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
The story is about Haley who is moving in with her brother, Tuck, and his roommate Cade.
We find out that Cade is quite charming and a ladies man, while Haley is a very studious, good college girl.
The story unfolds in a great pace, not rushed but not slow either.

I loved how mischievous and dirty Cade was, and how responsive Haley was to him.
I was a bit giddy when I started reading this story. It was the anticipation of reading a fun and sexy book. It did not disappoint. It was fun and sexy as hell, and that's why I read it in one sitting.
The only reason why I am not giving this book a 5 star rating, is because I thought the drama was a bit too much.
But all in all, a great and hot story.

Looking forward to reading the next one in the series.

I would happily recommend this book.

how in the world do you describe this book, honestly?

I'm really not one that is into all the lovey, fluffy, sex scene type of books, and that's pretty much all that it was. I expected there to be more drama and was pretty let down by this. This book could have probably been condensed down, in my opinion. Adam's story line, wasn't really needed. It was so lackluster and not very exciting. Tuck barely made an appearance. Quite frankly, i'm confused as heck on this books. There were definitely twists, but there wasn't enough of a punch to them.

If you like those steamy type of books, you may really enjoy this. I just wish there was more to it other than about 80% being a sex scene.

Also, this could just be me, but I HATE when authors say weird words in these types of books. Calling it her slipperiness, her bead, his prick. like.....what? that just about killed me.

The back of the book suggests that there may be a bit of a love triangle in this book but I don't feel that the story portrayed that. I loved the story line, I love the whole brothers best friend vibe. I felt the story was well written but was a little rushed in places at the end. Loved the chemistry between Cade and Haley. He gives off the whole bad boy vibe but when he's around Haley he's a different person. Lots of passion and emotions throughout the book to keep you gripped. After reading the first chapter of the next book I'm looking forward to its release
