Okay this is the perfect novel if you want a short (36 chapters + 4 extras) xianxia/cultivation novel with romance that is not complicated but will still emotionally wreck you. My favorite thing about this novel is the ML, Lu Xiuwen (Yan Wushi vibes kinda). He’s a demonic cultivator who is sickly and weak after losing his martial arts but still arrogant, bossy, ruthless, shameless, and cunning.

Recommend if you looking for:

✔️Xianxia/cultivation- but it’s not a main part of the story
✔️Enemies to lovers

So, I’m not sure if it’s the writing or the translation but a few times I was 😬.
“Small grains of flesh on his chest” uhm what? I don’t think many people would consider this a 5* read but it really was exactly what I needed/wanted at the moment and I loved it for what it was.

Also, as expected with a short fantasy novel…

Lâu rồi mới lại đọc được một câu chuyện bình yên đến vậy. Cõ lẽ khi đã mệt nhoài với đủ thứ phức tạp ngoài kia, người ta mới biết quý những câu chuyện đơn giản, ngọt ngào như vầy. Hên ghê, tui cũng vậy.

For such a short story, it was surprisingly sad. Lu Xiuwen’s unseen and misunderstood devotion was like a knife twisting and twisting. Maybe it reminded me too much of Chu Wanning, and I’ve got a soft spot for that man (even though he’s deeply problematic).

The fact that Lu Xiuwen had to watch as Duan Ling fell for his twin brother over the gesture he made… I feel like he should’ve been allowed to crash out harder. Instead, he just bore it all in silence. Then, to make things worse, I had to sit through Duan Ling’s mourning arc:

“The scenery on Sunset Mountain is beautiful. I’ll build a house there and stay with you. How does that sound? You like peach trees, so I’ll plant a grove of peach trees on the mountain. When the blossoms bloom, I’ll pick the best branch and give it to you.” -Duan Ling

“I snapped this off from our courtyard last autumn. At that time, he only had half a year left to live. He wouldn’t live to see the next year’s peach blossoms, so I snapped off this branch for him. After all these years of knowing him, I’ve only given him this one thing.” -Duan Ling

At least, there’s a happy ending.

Title: Zhe Zhi (Broken Branch)

Duan Ling raided the cult lair, but instead of finding the person he wanted to rescue, he found the shixiong he hated. Circumstances forced him to bring that hated person along with him, and so began his journey of conflicting feelings and discovering the reality of their past.

This book has my kind of angst, that kind of wrenching of pain that feels good, especially in the first part. With only 36 chapters + 4 extras, the story doesn’t have time to delve deeper, and it’s quite a pity; it has the potential for being epic if expanded to a full-blown story. But even for what it is, I really enjoyed this story.

I actually had high expectations going into this novel. I already know there's going to be angst and just from the synopsis, I really liked the actual premise surrounding the MC and ML's dynamic. I know I said I don't really like misunderstanding in a story and this one have that, but it wasn't built on miscommunication. I think the misunderstanding is quite justifiable in this one and it's not frustrating but it's definitely the root of the angst.

The fact that I have no issue with the misunderstanding is also because this is quite a short novel and it wasn't dragged on until the end. I appreciate that. I actually could have given this a much higher rating because reading the first half, I bawled my eyes out. But when THAT happened (major spoilers so I won't mention it) and one of the tropes that I hated comes into play, I just lost majority of my interest. I could have given this one a lower rating just because of where the story went, but since I really liked the first part, I ended up giving a generous 3 stars. Really sad about this going downhill.

If I had a nickel for every time I read about someone obsessing over the corpse of their supposed enemy (aka the love of their life), I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

Romanized title: Zhe Zhi

Short and sweet story at only ~40 chapters. I was in the mood for a xianxia/cultivation story and decided to pick this up for a quick fix.

The novel follows our main character, Duan Ling, who was kidnapped by the demonic sect when he was young and spent his childhood years there. The only positive memories he had from his time there were the times spent with Liu Xiuyan, who he believes was his savior who sent him out of the sect at huge risk. His fond memories and love towards Liu Xiuyan are in complete contrast to his feelings of animosity and hatred for our actual ML and Liu Xiuyan's identical twin brother, Liu Xiuwen, who was the head disciple of the demonic sect and constantly bossed Duan Ling around.

When they finally meet again 10 years later, Liu Xiuwen is no longer an extremely talented and promising martial artist but someone who's had his cultivation destroyed. He's not in good shape either, since he has so many poisons circulating around his body. According to the doctor, he only has a couple more months to live, so Duan Ling takes pity on him and unwillingly takes care of him. That's when their relationship gradually improves.

It's a short story, so don't expect a super complicated plot, but the author manages to fit in a decent story and some character growth in. I enjoyed reading about their improving relationship and Duan Ling's grief when he finds out about who his savior really was too late. The twist at the end about the true identity of the Right Protector was good too. Didn't see that one coming at all, though in hindsight maybe I should have, since the cast of characters is really small.

Anyways, would recommend this story for a satisfying and quick read!

It was okay. I actually enjoyed it as a short story but I wish it was a little bit longer and explored the past events and their relationship more. The last ten chapters of the main story felt somewhat rushed but the first 15 chapters were really pleasant.

I've been having a slump for the couple of days and I saw that 折枝 is just a short read so I gave it a try. One of the reasons I picked this book up is aside from the tags, is because of some of the reviews. And I think that really helped a lot to me getting out of my slump because I was really gripping my head for the first half. I'm like: "What the fuck do we do now?" And that's also how I came to like this book.

This story might not be a literary masterpiece, but it more than makes up for it with its captivating drama, emotional turmoil, and heart-melting romance. The first half of the book is particularly gripping—it honestly wrecked me. However, the second half shifts towards a more plot-driven focus, which isn't necessarily bad but there were a lot of jumping around. The emotional arc is beautiful, and while the plot could have benefited from more world-building and deeper character development, I was still satisfied with the progression, plot twists, and how the characters' emotions were conveyed.

I love the setup and the dynamic between the characters—the misunderstood, self-sacrificing character with a touch of the "crematorium" trope—and it did not disappoint. The author dives straight into the action, and while the male lead, Lu Xiuwen, is dealing with an illness, his intelligence certainly shines through at most moments. Both the male lead and the main character, Duan Ling, are loyal to the core, willing to sacrifice anything for the person they love. They're just so cute and loveable together. And their righteous alliance leader x evil cult master trope is making me giggle to no end.

The novel is short with a small cast, and honestly, I appreciated that—it doesn't overstay its welcome while still delivering a satisfying conclusion. And I could have easily read hundreds of pages more of the romantic moments. I really really liked them a lot especially Lu Xiuwen, he's just so precious! Moreover, I especially liked the Old Flame> extra. Wei Wuyou and Xie Huan is such a tragic couple, I love doomed couples! I definitely recommend this book.

Cũng không rõ là do mình đã kinh qua bao nhiêu bộ ngược văn, luyện ra một thân bách chiến với ngược tâm rồi hay sao nên đọc bộ này thấy vẫn ngọt ngào chán =)) Nhiều bạn chửi công ngu đần vô cùng tận, thật ra bạn chỉ hơi ngu tí thôi so với tỉ bộ mình đọc thì hãy còn nhẹ đô. Nếu nói thuộc tính công thụ bộ này thì chuẩn kiểu niên hạ mỹ nhân nữ vương thụ cùng trung khuyên ngốc nghếch công. 20 chương truyện đọc vèo cái hết, trừ chút khúc mắc công nhận nhầm người thương từ hồi bé cứu mình là em trai song sinh của thụ ra thì cũng không có chỗ nào quá thương tâm cả.
Thụ Lục Tu Văn là nhân vật duy nhất cứu vớt bộ này lên 3 sao, hắn thông minh mưu trí sắc đẹp như tai họa ngàn năm, lại si tình, miêu tả ba trăm từ hoa mỹ cũng không đủ, lúc nào bà KYNL cũng buff thụ đẹp như tiên giáng trần vậy. Tuy lúc đầu công hơi cục súc ngáo tró thô lỗ vs thụ nhưng ít nhất không làm gì quá đáng thiên thương hại lý phản bội thụ, vẫn xếp vào hàng chân chó đáng tha thứ. Về sau truyện cũng có mấy chương ngọt nhưng không quá nhức răng, H viết không quá kĩ càng, tình tiết cũng có chút bất ngờ gọi là plot twist sương sương :v Bộ này đọc giải trí ổn, ngắn đọc cho đỡ thèm khát vậy chứ cũng không quá xuất sắc.

Look. This is no literary masterpiece. What it IS, though, is juicy drama, emotional damage, and mind-melting romance. The first half of this is SO GOOD. It wrecked me. The second half became much more plot-heavy, which is fine, but I missed soft Lu Xiuwen and wish there was more of that at the end. It's really short, with a tiny cast, but honestly I liked that. I liked that it doesn't go on for too long but still wraps up decently satisfyingly. My heart could take like 50 (thousand) more pages of the romantic stuff though. I love Lu Xiuwen

Cũng không biết vì sao mình mua quyển này đã lâu nhưng không đọc. Hôm qua lượn lờ down đam mỹ về kindle, nên quyết định đọc luôn.
Và thật là sai lầm khi mình không đọc bộ này sớm hơn.
Và ngược chết đi sống lại cho đến giữa truyện, khiến mình mất ngủ một đêm vì khóc. Đang vui xong nó ngược tan nát.

Lục Tu Văn đúng là kiểu thụ mà mình thích. Hơi hắc ám, lắm trò, nhưng thật tâm vẫn yêu thương người đệ đệ là Lục Tu Ngôn. Mình tưởng tượng Lục Tu Văn thật xinh đẹp, như hình tượng của La Vân Hi mỗi lần ẻm đóng cổ trang á.
Còn Đoàn Lăng đúng là hình tượng trượng phu giang hồ, nhưng vẫn ga lăng dù cho ban đầu y vẫn chưa yêu Lục Tu Văn.
Cốt truyện ổn, cao trào ổn và xây dựng những nhân vật phụ cũng ổn, nhất là Liễu Dật, cũng là anh hùng hành tẩu giang hồ nhưng như con nít á, mê Lục đại ca quá xá luôn!
Những đoạn H không quá thô, cũng không quá nhiều nhưng đủ để người đọc đỏ mặt, và cũng khiến chuyện của hai nhân vật chính thêm trọn vẹn.

Truyện ngắn mà hay! Khuyến khích cho ai thích si tình giảo hoạt thụ × ngu đần (1 ít=)) công. Truyện không quá ngược nhưng độ ngược như vậy là quá tốt cho 1 bộ chỉ có 20 chương, và ngược hay nữa cơ toi khóc như 1 con cẩu trong đêm luôn đó😭 cơ mà HE=)))
Tuy cốt truyện k phải là hay nhất nhưng 20 chương mà tình tiết đầy đủ dễ hiểu, lấy đc nước mắt (của toi;-;), nhân vật có tính cách, cảm xúc và có H (RẤT MLEM🤤) là cực phẩm rồii. Đọc đi mnnnn

A good and short story with interesting twists and turns. Going into the story and seeing the initial setup, I had some expectations (you know... good twin, evil twin, and how that can get turned around in stories?), so I expected something like this. But this novel took my expectations and told me to think again. It was well done and satisfying. What carries the story is the relationship between Duan Ling and Lu Xiuwen - and in the early part of the novel, the shadow of Lu Xiuyan.

I also cried halfway through the novel, so the feelings really reached me. The amnesia trope is not one I enjoy, but in this case it was not too drawn out and well handled, so even if that's not something you enjoy, you should give that novel a chance.

《折枝》 marks my fifth read from 困倚危楼, and while the author’s signature style of delivering unexpected twists is still present, I found this novel slightly underwhelming compared to her other works. Perhaps it’s because I’ve encountered so many incredible wuxia stories that 折枝 didn’t quite measure up. As usual, I skipped the synopsis and dove right into the story, only to be thoroughly confused by the first chapter. Eventually, I caved and read the synopsis for context. Then everything clicked. Even with that initial confusion, I still can’t help but admire 困倚危楼’s ability to weave unpredictable twists and keep readers guessing. My attempts at anticipating the story were no match for her intricate plotting.

One thing this author consistently excels at is writing angst, and 折枝 is no exception. The emotional depth is undeniable, with Liu Xiuwen’s unrequited love and the agonizing wait for death pulling at my heartstrings. I really like Liu Xiuwen’s character setting; he was proud on the outside but heavily emotional on the inside. His words were often hilarious, providing a unique contrast to his deeper struggles. His faint smiles, the kind that hid a deep sorrow, only amplified the weight of his pain. Those smiles made his suffering even harder to bear, and I often found myself wishing he would stop, as they tugged at my emotions in ways I didn’t expect. The heartache and longing he endured really resonated with me, making this a poignant read.

However, I must admit I was disappointed with the romance. The chemistry between Duan Ling and Liu Xiuwen felt off. It seemed as though Duan Ling only realized his feelings for Liu Xiuwen after losing him and discovering it had been him all along. To me, this came across more like regret and an attempt to make amends rather than a genuine expression of love. Of course, this could be interpreted differently by other readers, but in my view, their relationship lacked the emotional intensity I was hoping for.

Reading 折枝 was like watching a traditional Chinese wuxia drama unfold before my eyes, especially in terms of plot structure and emotional weight. The rich atmosphere, the complexity of the characters, and the whirlwind of emotions evoked that classic wuxia feel. 困倚危楼 excels at immersing readers into a world filled with deep emotional struggles, and she succeeds in making you feel every moment of it alongside the characters.

It was truly a rollercoaster of emotions. One moment I was overwhelmed by sadness and grief, and the next I was surprised and smiling. The shift in my emotions was so sudden that my husband even asked me what I was doing. Haha.

The extras were fantastic, deliciously spicy and undeniably smutty. However, the last extra was truly the highlight. Just when I anticipated a plot twist, it took an unexpected turn, leaving me pleasantly surprised by the lack of one. One simply cannot outshine 困倚危楼.

Though 折枝 wasn’t as strong as some of her other works, 困倚危楼’s storytelling prowess still shines in 折枝. If you’re a fan of unexpected twists, deep emotional angst, and complex characters, this book is definitely worth reading. It’s not just a story, it’s an experience.

It was okay. The concept was good but it did not come off as angsty as it could have because of the length of the book and the execution. Spoiler warning, I kinda went on a tangent (my bad lol)

Before I go off, I wanna say that I did enjoy the plot/action part of this book for the most part. Although the plot twists didn't really hit, it was still interesting to see how everything would be dealt with.

Duan Ling came off as way too naive and his whole obsession with Lu Xiuyan was unrealistic to me. Like I understand maybe how he could have developed a crush by like misunderstanding his feelings of gratitude for romantic feelings but you're telling me that he held on to those feelings for 10 years??? Yall had like one interaction and this dude was convinced that they were made for each other and that Lu would wait for him. boy what. There is delusional and then there is whatever that is.

Not only that but Lu Xiuwen's feeling don't check out either. Not like Duan ling's but in the sense that it felt kinda random and not well fleshed out so I didn't feel for him when duan ling was like hating him half the book yk.

All issues I had with this book could have been solved with it being longer. Characters just weren't fleshed out enough. It just felt to me that certain feelings could not be cultivated by the audience because of how little detail was presented in the book. Don't get me wrong, it was enjoyable, it just could've been better.

This story was fantastic! It is worth noting this is by Kun Yi Wei Lou, author of The Missing Piece.

Super angsty. Definitely dogblood. Misunderstandings galore. Cultivation setting.

The story isn’t long at 36 chapters for the main story and 4 chapters of extras. Consequently, I binged it in one sitting 😂.

Below I will give some information on the plot. I wouldn’t say it is “spoilers”. If you fear even mild spoilers stop here!! This is your warning!!

The shou is greatly misunderstood by the gong, who hates him and instead loves his twin brother, whom he believes to have saved him from a cult during their youth. The gong hopes to find the twin (10 years after being saved from the cult) by using the shou, who is suffering from terminal poisoning and a loss of his cultivation. The first 50ish% is dealing with locating the twin and the shou’s illness.

It has a lot of good banter. The shou is a menace 😂, a real brat, but cunning and strong despite his cultivation loss, well equipped with a silver tongue. Like Chu Wanning he hides his true feelings behind a mask. He cares deeply for people but refuses to let them see the good he does. If he is suffering, he won’t reach out to those around him. You will really connect and like all the characters. The gong is adorable, allowing himself to get bossed around (begrudgingly) by the shou despite his hatred. The story has 6ish smut scenes (2 or 3 during the story, the rest in the extras).

The last 15ish chapters is faster paced with a lot of twists and exposition, but overall nothing that can ruin the novel, which was absolutely heart wrenching and fantastic. It has a HE so don’t fear (because the first 60% it seems pretty hopeless).

I give it 5 skulls: 💀💀💀💀💀

Definitely read this!!

Don’t skip the extras, especially “The Past” for extra background and “Old Flame” for extra pain (from side characters)😭. There is also a manhua titled “Broken Branches” which is beautiful, but was canceled after 10 chapters.

Tác giả chỉ đặt ra vấn đề rồi nhẹ nhàng lướt qua, không đào sâu gì vào tâm tư của hai người họ cả, Lục Tu Văn đã mong mỏi gì, khao khát gì trong suốt mười năm bị giam đó, cũng không đề cập đến chuyện vì một câu hứa mà ở lại chờ đợi hết một quãng đời, tình cảm của Lục Tu Văn không được khắc họa sâu, chỉ lướt qua như cái hôn năm đó, như thế mà đủ à. Cậu ấy phải có bao nhiêu yêu thương trân quý mới sẵn sàng hi sinh chính bản thân cho người kia một con đường sống, chấp nhận rủi ro bị phế võ công để rồi bị nhận lầm, đối với mình, mình không thấy buồn khi đọc đoạn đó mà là tức, tác giả quá hời hợt, cố tình tả như vậy để làm câu chuyện có nhiều màu hơn, nhưng như thế mình thấy rất tệ. Chính tác giả cũng không cần nhân vật của mình. Cách chết đi sống lại thật cũng không khó đoán gì, phân nửa truyện nhân vật chính chết, thì tất phải sống lại thôi, không bất ngờ gì mấy.

Còn Đoàn Lăng ôm mộng với Lục Tu Ngôn mười năm, tương tư suốt tuổi thiếu niên, chỉ vì câu hiểu lầm là quay ngoắt sang thích đúng người á? Đâu ra chuyện dễ dàng thế ạ. Tác giả có biết tình yêu tuổi thiếu niên nó ngông cuồng mãnh liệt thế nào không mà vì vài câu nói đã đổi thay. Chấp nhận là Lục Tu Văn bên cạnh lâu sẽ sinh động lòng, nhưng vì vậy mà quên mất người kia, quá gượng ép rồi.
Khi biết Lục Tu Văn còn nửa năm để sống, tác giả viết thoát 2 dòng đã qua 2 tháng, 1/3 cuộc sống cứ vì hai dòng đó mà qua đi, không biến chuyển, không tiến tới, lãng phí thời gian như vậy để làm gì, rồi sau này lại kể từng khắc dằn xé, không cảm động được chút nào, thật đấy.

Đối với mình cuốn sách này rất tệ, tác giả hời hợt, tình cảm của nhân vật bị đẩy nhanh đến gượng ép, tình tiết lật qua lật lại cũng không đặc sắc gì, không đọng lại gì ngoài sự ức chế, chán.

Chiết Chi giống như một bát canh có rất nhiều nguyên liệu tốt, nhưng pha chế và nêm nếm gia vị không tốt, nên cảm giác khá hời hợt và nhạt nhẽo.

Thực ra với một bộ ngắn như Chiết Chi thì không thể cài cắm được nhiều tình tiết. Nhưng mình thấy vấn đề là các nút gỡ của Chiết Chi hơi nhanh và vội. Có vẻ Chiết Chi muốn đề cập đến hiện tại và mối quan hệ phát sinh sau này nhiều hơn. Nhưng cũng vì thế mà Chiết Chi không có nhiều điểm nhấn lắm. Phần ngược của Chiết Chi chưa thực sự ấn tượng, phần giải quyết cũng có một vài bug. Tóm lại thì Chiết Chi đọc để giải trí là chủ yếu, không khiến cho người ta phải nhớ nhung nhiều.

Maybe more like a 3.5. I really enjoyed this book and all the angst. For a moment there I was wondering if I missed a tragedy tag. I do wish we had seen Duan Ling suffering a teensy bit more but I loved Lu Xiuwen.

Summary: Duan Ling defeated the evil sect leader to save his long lost love. Instead of finding his love, he finds his love's twin brother, Lu Xiuwen, who Duan hated because of his cruelty to him. Duan tolerates Lu Xiuwen in order to try to find his brother when he realizes Lu Xiuwen is ill and only has less than half a year left to live. Duan Ling and Lu Xiuwen become closer and truths about their past eventually get revealed.

Chán quá tôi đọc đam mỹ lúc nào ko hay =)))))))
Cũng phải 2 3 năm gì rồi mới đọc lại đam, mất cỡ 2 chương đầu làm quen lại văn cổ trang tung của
Truyện đọc dù não tàn vl nhưng vẫn zui vì có vài đoạn ngọt =))))) đoạn đầu còn sắp xếp hợp lí chút, bắt đầu từ 13,14 trở đi là dài dòng mà còn vô lí vãi. Tới chap 17 là mình đọc lướt để coi HE cho ròi
Ngược của bộ ni đúng là nhẹ đô, tuổi gì với quá khứ chinh chiến ngôn đam của mình 😼

Xét về độ ngược thì bộ này chỉ đủ gãi ngứa cho mình thôi (￣ｰ￣) nhưng plot xây dựng khá ok, tới lúc cuối ngả bài mới thấy tác giả cũng dụng tâm cho mấy cái khúc mắc, plot twist các thứ, chứ chục chương đầu đúng kiểu "ngu đần công", đọc mà bực (ﾉω･｀o) tuyến tình cảm mình thấy cũng không sâu sắc lắm, hơi bị khiên cưỡng.

I enjoyed this story. It wasn't anything super special and felt quite rushed throughout the story, but overall the plot made sense to me and there was solid character development. I could see this story idea being played out well if the book was longer - if we had a solid backstory behind Lu Xiuwen and Duan Ling as kids in the cult, etc, as done in the Governor's Illness Anthology.

3.5 Mình đọc sách nên là không có đoạn H, sẽ tìm đọc sau. Đoạn đầu đọc thì thấy tức vì công, đoạn sau có ngược nhưng chưa đủ với mình. Nói chung là cũng ổn, tác giả có xây dựng cốt truyện và nội dung đầy đủ, chỉ có tuyến tình cảm thì chưa rõ lắm.

Không hiểu sao topic đề cử truyện đam mỹ nào cũng có cái quả này. Lại còn toàn tag ngược luyến tàn tâm. Là t đọc sai truyện hay cảm thụ của mọi người có vẫn đề 🙂

Đọc tác phẩm này 2 lần rồi. Cũng cảm động đấy nhưng chưa thật sự chạm đến trái tim mình như một tác phẩm khác của tác giả là Bàng Môn Tả Đạo.
