These are short impressionistic nature poems in the Haiku style. Poems are grouped into Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. I find joy every day in the details of the natural world, and I want to share that delight with others.
4+ stars - Carol Starr is from Canada where temperatures could get as low as 30° below zero. At her book reading, she jokingly said, “you would get about two weeks of good weather in August and that’s it.” I loved her strong sonorous reading voice. Those long winter days taught Starr to appreciate the summertime. She attributes her love of nature to her father. That love of nature shows in Starr’s debut book, "Ripples...little poems."
Accompanied by Starr’s photography, this short book of Haiku poems felt meditative to me. I could feel my breaths slowing down as I immersed myself in her words and pictures. Her book made me want to take a walk in the woods and slow down enough to observe nature and appreciate what I was seeing.
Starr’s first poem compares a frog to a cloisonné brooch. The New World Encyclopedia states that cloisonné “is an ancient metalworking technique, a multi-step enamel process used to produce jewelry, vases, and other decorative items.” I had no idea! I love the color photos, which seem like the perfect embodiment of Starr’s words, but the frog photo, as well as Starr’s cover photo, are simply superb.
Carol Starr retired to North Carolina where she can enjoy many more days of nature during the year. I could read this one every day and enjoy Starr’s photography as a meditative exercise. Highly recommended!
Got a few minutes? That's all it takes to read this sweet chap book. But to absorb it you're going to want to take a bit more time. Trust me: you'll be happy that you did!
Poetry is not my normal choice for a sit-down-read book, but I was delighted when I read this book of Haiku. It is one not to read quickly, but to appreciate one little poem at a time. The photographs add to her poetry and are in themselves a reason to stop and ponder. The poet, Carol Starr, is in a writers' group with me, so I know her personally. She has led our group through the creative process of writing short poems, and this book exemplifies all she taught us.
