Darcy Wright is a closeted lesbian who has been infatuated with her best friend, Taylor, since junior high. Leaving her small northeast Minnesota town for Harvard in a quest to become a doctor, she moves in with med student Olivia Boyd, a neurotic, anal, gigantic pain in the backside. The first year of juggling medical school is gruelling, but it's nothing compared to living with Olivia. Coming out to her friends and family with an anti-climactic flop, Darcy uses her newly publicized sexuality to try and win Taylor's affections through an ill-hatched scheme that crosses uncomfortable lines. The result is as unexpected to Darcy as Darcy's affinity for medicine is to Olivia. The first year of medical school is a nerve-wracking encounter in medicine, learning lessons the hard way, and finding what her heart desires.
4.5 Stars - Audible version - 18 hour listen but the audible version was book 1 and 2; Tricky Wisdom and Tricky Chances
You really get a sense of what being a med student is like. Found myself smiling or laughing a lot while listening. There are just a lot of cute interactions. The voice used for Olivia took awhile to get used to and her character is a bit unlikable at first, but stick with it because there is a reason for it and the ending is worth the listen. Like really, the ending is so good! I liked both books very much and can't wait to listen to the next set.
4.5⭐️With the audiobooks, I got two books in one: Tricky Wisdom and Tricky Chances. The reader gets to follow Darcy Wright, a young med student who comes from a small town to Harvard to study medicine. She is so endearing: she is clueless in relationships, clumsy, laid back, has a huge heart, and goes through life with a strong support system in her parents and best friend. Olivia is a conundrum; she is the opposite of Darcy. She is aloof, so driven, and chooses to go through her studies and life alone. Her number one goal is her career, and Darcy is almost an inconvenience in her ambition. The more you learn about her, the more you understand her way of living. Her story is heartbreaking, and I am so glad Darcy is there for her. The first book is more about how Darcy deals with her unrequited feelings for her best friend. The second book is about how Darcy and Olivia deal with their relationship, their taxing medical students' lives, and how scars from the past impact their couple. I couldn't help but get attached not only to Olivia and Darcy but also to Taylor, Sam, and Kara. Eyde managed to captivate me with the growth of these characters professionally, personally, and emotionally. I found many things I loved: some jealousy scenes, some fake dating, loving caretaking scenes, beautiful and heartfelt love declarations. There are still many stories to tell, especially for Olivia, and I also want to know about Taylor, Sam, and Cara. I don't know why the following books in the series got delayed or are still planned, but if they do get published one day, I will definitely read them.
I normally never write reviews but this one struck my heart deeply. After hearing that Olivia lost someone to HLHS (hypoplastic left heart syndrome) really hit me hard. My son was born with the same heart disease. It’s a very scary and unpredictable illness. You only take one day at a time. So I got so emotional hearing this disease in a book because it is rare. This was a great book and audio. I can’t wait till book 3 or the next part comes out. This is a great love story of two young women trying to find a way thru medical school in a complex relationship. Give it a read you won’t be disappointed if you like romance wlw !
If you love this series you will definitely love this audiobook. It's over 18 hours so it takes a while but was well worth the price. It made me want book 3 that much more.
I absolutely adored every second of this story. It was sweet and innocent and then deep and powerful. I really enjoyed all of the characters and the story build and growths.
This was a long audio book yet worth the time. The setting and time period covered made for great character development and relationship ups and downs. It is believable and emotional. I am going to stop here as there is so much in these 2 books that to say much would provide a spoiler. I definitely recommend the book just for the journey of Olivia and Darcy through their personal mine fields.
