The Kid Who Came From Space

Rate this book

The stunning new 10+ story from the bestselling and award-winning author of TIME TRAVELLING WITH A HAMSTER, for anyone who loved the humour of WALL-E, the action of STAR WARS and the deeply touching emotion of ET.

A small village in the wilds of Northumberland is rocked by the disappearance of twelve-year-old Tammy. Only her twin brother, Ethan, knows she is safe – and the extraordinary truth of where she is. It is a secret he must keep, or risk never seeing her again.

But that doesn’t mean he’s going to give up.

Together with his friend Iggy and the mysterious (and very hairy) Hellyann, Ethan teams up with a spaceship called Philip, and Suzy the trained chicken, for a nail-biting chase to get his sister back… that will take him further than anyone has ever been before.

A remarkable story of sibling connection, friendship and interstellar adventure from the author Kiran Millwood Hargrave called “one of my favourite middle grade writers”.

The author’s best so far. Meet the alien/s. Deal with loss/separation. Get spooked. Be ready to get emotional. And try not to love the one you should not love.

This book is so heartbreaking good!

The story deals with the disappearance of a girl for which the twin sibling got it upon himself to find her despite fighting his own demons every single day.

I find the settings and the plot quite realistic even though one main perspective is of characters from another universe.

The plot is quite unique. The writing is so good and is the best of the author I would say!

There are many emotional moments and I had to put down the book multiple number of times just to stop myself from crying or feeling too much because of what the main character was going through.

The story highlights unexpected best moments of life amidst tragedies and sadness. The best part is the friendship bond. However, I am not happy with the adult characters. They are realistic but not the ideal fictional parents for me. They are imperfect. They are struggling.

The story is quite sad throughout. However, things go well and wrapped up so perfectly in the end.

And that’s how a reader gave the book a perfect five star!

This book was out of the world and I mean it!
I found this book deeply mesmerizing, everything given with full detail.
This book is a must to read, Hellyann is a wonderful creature to me, and Ethans gran/grandmother is absolutely generous.
Once I finished reading it felt like I was already in another universe.

This is originally from my blog:https://seaviolin.wordpress.com/ :
I read a book (thrice) which sent a thrill down my spine. And I wondered if aliens would ever visit me in real life. That book is a sci-fi one with a bit of adventure. It is “The Kid Who Came From Space” by Ross Wilford. Let me not keep you in suspense and share a short review.

It takes place in a village, a very small one. Tammy is a girl of age 12. She and her twin brother, Ethan, have mixed feelings about each other, until now. This adventure changes their life, forever; It all started on Christmas eve. After having a bitter quarrel with Ethan, Tammy rushes out of the house. When Ethan follows, he finds her bike near the lake. He searches for her everywhere, only to hear a sound, an out-of-the-world one. He couldn’t find his sister alone. So, he goes to his parents and tell them everything. Then one day at the lake, while with a friend, Iggy, they find the truth. It was a very painful one.

Tammy was captured by aliens and was light years away. They also met Hellyan. She was a good Alien from where Tammy was captured. It was a secret to keep or never seeing her again, said Hellyan. Together this trio of unusuals dodge two alien hunters, save Tammy and set fire to an Alien auditorium. But does this mean they might die? To find out more, dig in and explore this adventurous story by Ross Wilford.

This book is a wonderful read which takes you on an adventurous journey to space, and a fun and exciting experience for middle grade readers. This is one such book which anyone can read irrespective of their age. Book cover is also very beautiful and enough to grab the attention of readers.
Flow of the story is also very good so anyone can finish it in one or two days. The language used by the author is also very easy and lucid. I really like the way the author truly captures the essence of sci-fi and mystery in this book, and also teaches children to keep courage and faith in ourself even in the darkest phase of our life.

Story is about Tammy, a 12 year old girl who is missing and her brother, Ethan, knows where is she. Together with his friend Iggy and the mysterious Hellyann, Ethan teams up with a spaceship called Philip, and Suzy the trained chicken, for a nail-biting chase to get his sister back. I just loved the sibling bonding and friendship they shared. This book is a mix of sci-fi and suspense that keeps the reader fall in love with the book all over again.

Most things Ross Welford touches turn to gold for me and this lovely book is no exception.
And no, I have never met the man.
I relate tho the sibling dynamics, to the odd kid with a healthy disrespect for the rules, to the ordinary world touched by utterly otherwordly happenings. You can't beat a pub setting for relatability. Despite spending much of its territory in a missing person inquiry, it is an uplifting, even funny book which young readers will love.

This book was my first pick from the writings of Ross Welford. The book left me in awe with
it’s simplistic, relatable characters and a convincing science fiction infused with the right balance of nail-biting suspense, immensely enjoyable action and thought-provoking moments.
The story starts off with a ‘Missing’ advertisement for Tammy, a 12 year old, who disappeared suddenly in the suburbs of a small town called Northumberland. On another planet far away from the earth we are in the shoes of Hellyann, who is visiting a human zoo, yes, a HUMAN zoo, where humans are held captive by the advanced alien species for their research and study. As she passes by different human exhibits, which are living, she feels an incomprehensible connection with Tammy. Hellyann is surprised at how human faces are so expressive and she empathises with
Tammy, the same missing girl from Northumberland. The aliens on the planet though are so
advanced than the human counterparts, they do not have emotions, and they don’t feel things. They don’t cry, neither are they prone to irrational acts of love and sacrifice. But, Hellyann is somehow cursed with having feelings. And, she has to keep that a secret, or else she might be at risk of having the same fate as other humans in the zoo.
Then we are introduced to Ethan, Tammy’s twin brother and his friend Iggy, along with his
trained little chicken. The story then takes a turn when Ethan finds out that his missing sister is
held captive in an alien planet, and the kiddos team up to save Tammy, no matter the risk.
That’s how the story unfolds into an exciting journey filled with fun, and adrenaline-rushing
adventure.
The whole time I read the book, it felt like an animated movie. And I really look forward to
this book being made into a film. I am absolutely sure it’s going to be loved by kids as well as
adults. Though the setting seems to be around kids, the emotions are universal, that are relatable
to a reader of any age group. The adult characters in the story also are developed quite well, unlike
many other children’s books.
The instances and conversations between Tammy and Ethan, though less in number form
the base for the decisions taken by them in the future. How far can one go for their loved one?
Ethan travels to another planet for Tammy.
Though Tammy doesn’t have many direct dialogues, we still feel her presence subtly in the
moments when Ethan misses her and remembers her words. Through this, the author successfully makes the reader believe in the closeness and the strong bond they share with each other.
The story quietly weaves many lessons without sounding preachy. The friendship amongst
the kiddos' team and the courage they exhibit while they encounter unforeseen challenges and
villains stronger than them are intricately woven into the sheer actions of the characters. No
character feels dull. Every character has a role to play. Especially the role of Ethan’s granny came as
a sudden surprise in the story.
Overall the story and style were great and the writing was such that the scenes were playing
just in front of my eyes. It’s my personal favourite because of the fun, simple, innocent emotions I
can relate to.
I would suggest this book for its light-hearted tone and fun-filled characters. Impressed by
the author’s writing, I started reading another one of his works too i.e “Into the Sideways World”.

Imagine entering a spaceship, getting knocked out, and waking up to find yourself in interstellar space, gazillion miles away from Earth, surrounded by stars. The Kid Who Came From Space is a heartwarming, and slightly creepy, tale of science-fiction in which two boys are thrown into an unplanned adventure far away from their home on Earth. They are accompanied by an alien named Hellyann who calls herself a “Hearter.” On her planet, a Hearter is someone who “has feelings” while most of her fellow creatures, who don’t have feelings, are called “Hunters.”

The central part of the story revolves around a boy Ethan and his friend Iggy, who find themselves rolling in an unplanned journey to an alien planet to save Tammy, Ethan’s twin sister.

Just when all the efforts of earthlings to find Tammy were unsuccessful, Ethan and Iggy had come across a hairy creature prowling the beach in their small village. She told them that she could help them bring the girl back. Her planet’s residents had captured Tammy and put her in an exhibit in the “Earth Zoo.”

The story moves forward with tailspins of adrenaline-pumping emotions, which are followed by a tearjerker episode of friendship, love, and attachment. Meanwhile, Ethan realizes the power and privilege of being a human. Nature has endowed humans with a superpower that most of them don’t realize until the end of their lives – feelings. When Ethan walked among aliens, he realized how precious human feelings are, more than any cosmic treasure. Plus, humans have things like luck, attachment, and a variety of emotions that make their life dramatically beautiful.

Along with insights like these, the story is also peppered with little episodes of humor and science concepts. All in all, the novel takes Ethan through a sojourn into an unlikeable scenario at the alien planet and then prompts him to learn what he is truly capable of. In an almost haphazard ending, he returned to Earth with a knowledge based on experience; fears dissipated through action, still reflecting on the sacrifice Hellyann made for the three of them. The story wraps up with the core message, “love triumphs all.”

Sci-fi alien story for pre-teens, doesn't talk down to the reader.

3.5 stars

I've read every Ross Welford book, in awe at the genius of some of his concepts and execution. Some of my favourite novels for the age group. This might be my least favourite though.

It's the first of his I've read as an audiobook, though the format suited the narration and flow of the story, it was a straightforward enough story with just a couple of changes in storyteller that didn't confuse. Though I did lose concentration a few times, distracted from the plot.

A twin sister goes missing, and her brother finds out what's happened to her. It may be something surprising and totally out of his comfort zone, but he knows he's got to try and get her back.

Not wanting to give too much away here, though the title gives its own clues. Ethan is a slightly unusual 'hero' - very flawed, the kind of person who makes excuses for having underachieved, never putting in everything he's able to. It's the kind of character you want to see stretch and grow over the course of a book. The second narrator, Hellyann, gives some fascinating perspective on another culture, and will set many young minds pondering on human/animal rights, and related themes.

What felt fairly tight to start with did become quite madcap at times, which may have been why I felt distracted in the middle chapters. Definitely some scenes and images stick in the mind, and the family/friendship theme is a strong one.

This does expect a reader to keep up, it doesn't simplify issues or sugarcoat some quite shocking ideas/mental images, like all Welford's books. But it is also entertaining and a great introduction to a wide-ranging genre.

For ages 10-14. With thanks to Newbooks for providing a sample Audible copy.

So I live in Northumberland and Kielder, where the book is set, is just up the road from me. It did give the book that extra special something being able to place the story and know the locations. I love children’s books about space – they offer adventure and imagination without resorting to magic and just automatically feel a little more grown up. The Kid Who Came From Space was no different starting with an alien abduction on Christmas Eve. There’s certainly no Santas or Christmas stockings as the hunt for missing Tammy continues, so don’t worry it’s definitely NOT a Christmas book.

I just loved the support cast. Robots learning sarcasm and pet chickens were genius inclusions. There was also humour by the bucket load that adults and kids alike could connect to as well as quite a bit of emotion. It was an original story and one you could certainly get some interesting discussions from. How was Hellyann’s world better/worse than ours? Why is it OK to put elephants in zoos but not humans? Ooooh my book club senses are tingling!

I very much enjoyed The Kid Who Came From Space and have passed it to my eldest to read. Her interest piqued at the mention of Northumberland. A boy protagonist without being smelly or daft, sibling relationships and space but with real emotion. What’s not to love? If you like sci-fi books you could also try Orion Lost or Crater Lake.

You probably think I didn't give this enough of a chance abandoning at about 50 pages but from previous Ross Welford books, I now know when to stop. I loved The 1,000-year-old Boy and Into the Sideways World but didn't like When We Got Lost in Dreamland, and I persevered with that when I knew I shouldn't have. So I have taken my own advice and let this go.

The story was going along great and I loved Iggy, he is a great character ad I know it's not an Iggy book but then we got all this back story about Tammy going missing and I felt that really slowed things down. We already know she missing get back to finding her. This book didn't work out but I am looking forward to Time Travelling with a Tortoise, enjoyed book one.

Review by Maya, Grade 4:

Since you were born you probably love your siblings, but how would you feel when suddenly your twin sister disappears; I don’t think you’d be happy. But that happened to Ethan and he couldn’t bear it so in grief he went on with his life and reporters were coming and going in and out his parents bar.
When, the day after it happened, a boy called Iggy (which his parents didn’t really like) came and asked him if he wanted to go fishing with him, which Ethan said yes to.
Iggy said that they should go in the canoe and when they where in there where suddenly a lot of big splashes! They fell out of the canoe and Iggy let the hook fall and it went straight into his leg. They got on the jetty with Iggy almost bleeding to death and Ethan shouted “Help!” but they were too far away from the village but suddenly a very hairy creature appeared and it had a stick and with that stick it healed Iggy and disappeared into nowhere.
And that’s how the story begins.

I think it is a good book because it is easy to read and if you don’t like boring books then it is a great book for you. I don’t like boring books and it was a great book for me.

When Tammy disappears without a trace, the whole village Comes together in search
For the missing 12 year old. Ethan knows she's safe, he is her twin brother after all. But, when Ethan discovers the truth, how is he going to return her home safely?
With the help his friend Iggy, and a mysterious creature called Hellyann. Ethan finds himself travelling to another universe to rescue Tammy, but it doesn't come without its complications and a few bad guys along the way.

Not my usual genre of reads, but when my daughter brought this home from the library I was intrigued by its opening page. From that moment, I barely put it down. It's beautifully paced to keep reader interest, with the most fabulous descriptive scene setting, that you feel like you’re there with the characters every step of the way. You truly believe there is life far away from earth. The main characters are vulnerable, yet strong and resilient in equal measure. With a strong theme of the importance of friendship and family throughout, this is a great read for any sci-fi fan or anyone looking for something a little different to spark their imagination.

“What is the point of living if you don't, you know, feel things? Love things? Love each other?”
― Ross Welford, The Kid Who Came From Space

Hi readers, dorks, bookworms, schoolers and friends. The kid who came from space, a famous book from Ross Welford (one of my favourite authors). This book was AMAZING. It was full of adventure, mystery and the plot was very interesting. Ethan and his sister were excited for Christmas but on Christmas Eve night something very messy came in. There was a big problem which affected Ethan and his family. (So sorry guys got to keep the problem a secret, if you know, shhhhhh!) Ethan and his best friend Iggy go through an exciting adventure out of space to get back one of the most important person in his life who went missing. Now how they went?, were they able to get back?, Who went missing? All these questions are for you to solve. Consider this as your test, Read that book AND ANSWER ALL THESE MYSTERIES!
This book is truly my favourite and will always stay in my heart. It was an adventures and inspiring book which was heartfelt and beautifully written. I love the way Ross Welford writes, I feel his writing somehow conveys some type of hidden message that is very rare. Overall, I recommend you to read this book its a 10/10!

An enjoyable alien abduction Caper. Ethan's twin sister, Tammie, is abducted by aliens and put in an alien zoo on another planet. However one alien on the planet does not think this is a good thing to do and sets off on an adventure to return the abductee to her world.

Many years ago, in primary school, I read a book called "Dragonfall 5 and the Empty Planet" and loved it. I think this book would engender much the same feeling, and like Dragonfall 5, there is little truly deep or memorable about this book. This despite a slightly didactic tone about the importance of imagination. I think children will like it, but it is not one of the children or young adult books that crosses age boundaries. Still it was a fun read and nicely done with some good humour and enjoyable characters.

Recommended for primary school children. My four star rating is for them. It would be less for adult readers - probably a three.

I have major problems with the title of this book, and its pacing. When you're expecting a kid to come from space, and you've been told early on that they end up in space, it's a big ask to then make you wait until the end of chapter 56 before they get there. There's only 79 chapters in the book. So I spent a great deal of time waiting for the thing they told me would happen. Which is a shame, because I think that if I hadn't been waiting then I would have enjoyed the lead up better. And what's with the title anyway?

I enjoy Ross Wellford's writing, which is probably why I feel so frustrated about this book.

Ethan has a twin sister Tammy. It was Christmas time and Tammy just disappeared.

Where she ended up is in a human zoo for aliens. She was captured and exhibit like any animal in a zoo. She was drugged and mind wipe so that she could stay docile.

Ethan's parents are trying to find Tammy. Iggy is a strange kid who try his best to help Ethan. They went fishing and find an alien.

On the alien planet, Hellyann find it inhumane to keep Tammy in captive. She is trying to rescue her.

The story is about human who has imagination that is more than just facts and figures.
The story is also about the ethical reason for keeping animals in the zoo.
Learning about doing our best, is sometimes means sacrifice.

The language is more or less in keep with the tone of children. They were not overly polite or witty.

Like it a lot. Highly recommended for children.

This book is a heartwarming tale of sibling love, bravery, and friendship.Ethan’s determination to save his sister, despite all odds, showcases the depth of his character and the strength of family bonds.Though his parents were deeply affected and struggling, they always showed care and love for Ethan, adding an emotional layer to the story. The supporting cast shines too—Gran’s youthful spirit,Iggy’s loyalty, and even Suzy the chicken’s unexpected charm add layers of warmth and humor.Hellyann’s sacrifice is both heartbreaking and inspiring, showing true courage and selflessness. The story also delivers a poignant message about freedom and empathy, making readers reflect on how animals feel in captivity, drawing parallels to the idea of humans being caged for display on another planet.A truly touching and thought-provoking read!

This isn’t a metaphorical ‘journey of the heart’ type book where a kid is adjusting to life without his sister, no actually she really has been abducted by aliens and put in a human zoo where an alien begins to believe this is wrong and decides to put things right. Brilliant.

Terrifically funny with terrible smells, hairy aliens and a pet chicken but with an undercurrent of deep meaning considering the ethics of zoos, the value of feelings (even if they hurt) and the way that challenging children are written off Ross Welford always seems to hit the nail on the head with an accessible and interesting plot then kicks you in both the feels and the thoughts to have an opinion. Marvellous Marvellous stuff, can wait to read more of his work.

Another stellar story from one of my new favourite authors. I have to admit that I lost a little bit of interest for a couple of chapters early on but it soon recovered to my relief. Very likeable characters again, loved the overall humour. I was a little put off by his Dad’s reaction to the whole idea of alien involvement, ie aggressively dismissive, and as an adult reader I can understand that a man at the end of his tether would probably be short of patience for nonsensical ideas, however I’m not sure younger readers would be quite so quick to forgive that seemingly unjust reaction. Be interesting to see what the target audience makes of it. The 1,000 year old boy was certainly a favourite.
