One More Thing #6

One Step Forward

Rate this book
Does growing up mean growing apart?

Science nerd Ryan is the kind of applicant all colleges want, assuming he can get through the interview process without screaming. Luke’s biggest selling point is that he’s an athlete. Or he was. He’s played baseball all his life but even that seems uncertain now.

Ryan’s star is rising fast while Luke is a comet plummeting to earth. Yet their hands are joined tightly together even as they pull in different directions.

As each boy must go down his own path, can they still make time for each other? Or if it's one step forward for Ryan and two steps back for Luke, will there be no place for them together?

One Step Forward is a M/M romance novel with secret missions and symbolic cupcakes where gay plans save the day. If you like sweet boyfriends, lovable zany characters, or coming of age stories, you’ll love this contemporary YA book.

Stand alone and fits well into the series.

This story fits in nicely with the whole story of Ryan and Luke, but it has the ability to stand on it own. I actually laughed when the exact event that started this whole series happened again and again impacted Luke’s life. I found the story to be very engaging and I enjoyed reading it, I trust you will too. If this is the first book in this series that you read, I would suggest going back to book one and read the whole series. You will enjoy the adventure.

Let me start by saying I really like this author. I have read seven of his books in two weeks and I was excited to read this book on the day of its release, so don’t take this review as me generally disliking the author.

The story was ok, but it was kind of just flat. I don't feel like there was a lot to this book. The description talks to whether there is a place for Luke and Ryan together in college. Other than a passing reference, that wasn’t even addressed. More time was spent discussing Ryan’s driving lessons than if they would go to college together.

The other books in the series had a central issue to be resolved. This book had an issue that was very minor and that was more of a side-story anyway. It almost feels like the book was filler to continue on with the series.

I will continue to read more books in the series, as they come out, and I do hope there are more books to come. I just hope forthcoming books have a more central issue and resolution.

Like others have said, I was excited to see this book come out. Then I read it. As others have said, there did not seem to be much to it except snarky dialog disguising how little plot there was. Part of the plot seemed to be another version of part of the plot from another of the books.

I have liked the other books in this series very much. Ryan cracked me up. In this book I just wanted to slap him or force the medication he has obviously forgotten to take down his throat since he has apparently gone off the deep end.

In places it was difficult to tell if it was Ryan or Luke talking because their unique voices were no longer unique. The other unique characters lost their uniqueness or just became annoying parodies of themselves.

At some point I got so fed up I just started skimming hoping to find an actual story with an actual plot that advanced the characters' lives. Except for someone learning to drive, there wasn't much of one.

This used to be a good series. Now it’s all snarky dialogue, little story and even less romance. Also that guy on the book cover definitely does not look like a high school student.
