Sina Grace’s parents had big plans for their son: Ivy League schooling, professional credentials, a 6-figure income as a doctor– the works! Fortunately for us, he found the wonderful world of comics instead. It was in this world of contradictions that he “matured,” one foot teetering on the edge of academia, the other drawn to the inescapable grasp of an ink-bound fantasy underworld.

At 14, Grace seemingly appeased his parents by interning at Top Cow Productions, under the guidance of Editor-in-Chief Renae Geerlings (his single mother figured at least he was collecting college credit). However the only thing he was collecting (other than comics), was the compulsive habit of drawing unrealistically proportioned, scantily clad women.

At 16, he got a perpetual summer-time job at the Santa Monica landmark: Hi De Ho Comics, where he would be inspired to create Books with Pictures. By 17 he wrote, drew, and self-published his first comic, The Roller-Derby Robo-Dykes versus the Cannibals. His knowledge of disproportionate harlots with weapons came in handy when depicting a story about Robo-Dykes bent on taking over the world. His mother was happy that he was taking interest in girls. The book went into a second printing, and received the praise of Lying in the Gutters critic, Rich Johnston.

Weeks after graduating high school, he was asked by Rilo Kiley front-woman Jenny Lewis to illustrate a limited edition comic book adaptation of their 2004 record, More Adventurous. In the spring of 2006 he was asked to apprentice under comics genius, Howard Chaykin (even though it may not be apparent in Books with Pictures, Grace did learn the function of a ruler and the meaning of a vanishing point).

Between the summers of 2005 and 06, Grace’s partially-biographical indie dramedy, Books with Pictures, went from hand-xeroxed zines to full-fledged, full-sized comic books. Shortly after its debut at San Diego Comic-Con, Diamond Distributors accepted the series into their ordering catalogue, Previews. Grace’s work on the series was met with admiration from bloggers and reviewers alike, and has since taken on several projects for multiple anthologies due in late 2008.

To his parents’ delight, he graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz, receiving an undergraduate degree in Literature, with an emphasis on Creative Writing.

Sina Grace recently self-published an illustrated novel about a sorcerer sleuth in Orange County, aptly named Cedric Hollows in Dial M for Magic, his next project will be providing illustrations for Amber Benson’s novel, Among the Ghosts, through Aladdin Books.

I have been on a roll LATELY with reading great graphic novels and this one was no different! While I do think this one suffered a little bit from a lack of world building, I still VERY much enjoyed this and I cannot wait to see where the story goes in the next volumes! Also, bonus points for showcasing so many of my favorite parts of Los Angeles. That is def the thing that I am looking the most forward to getting in future volumes and I just can't! wait!

Really nice artwork on this one but the story didn’t really grab me. I think part of the problem might be that, at 44, I’m at least twice as old as the intended target audience. If you’re in your late teens or early twenties and struggling to find your way in a new town, this could be the book for you.

I'll just start with I am definitely not the target audience for this. It was OK. It's the story of a young woman, Daphne, who follows her boyfriend to college, is immediately dumped and stumbles on Melrose Place for ghosts. Her roommate is very closed off and religious. She gets ditched by some people heading out to a party. Daphne takes on the personality of whoever she's around. Nor does she make much of an effort. Instead, she quickly starts spending all her time hiding out with her ghost friends instead of at college. I quickly found the ghosts and their backstory much more interesting than Daphne. Daphne just seemed like a dumb girl that I had no interest in, especially after the issue where she goes out with the terribly conceited guy who constantly negs her.

Siobhan Keenan and Cathy Le did a nice job on the art. Simple clean lines and bright colors.

Received a review copy from Boom Box and NetGalley. All thoughts are my own and in no way influenced by the aforementioned.

I randomly picked up this comic book as I was perusing through Hoopla looking for some spooking comic books/graphic novels. I've seen a couple of people read it and like it well enough. It focuses on a character by the name of Daphne who moves to LA for her boyfriend only to get dumped. She finds this manor which is inhabited by ghosts and is able to convince them to let her move in as long as she keeps their existence a secret. One of the best aspects of this comic book is definitely the artwork. I loved the coloring and the depictions of ghosts as they all came from different periods in time. The overall story could have used a little more work. While first volumes in comic book series are utilized to set the groundwork for the rest of the story, I felt as though there were some parts of this story that could have been better explained especially in terms of the flashbacks. I'm hoping that this is improved in later volumes. Overall, it was okay and I'm looking forward to see what's in store for the characters in the second volume.

An unsurprising but pleasant dramedy of a teenager moving into a haunted house and hanging out with the ghosts who live there while her relationships with real people fall apart. The writing is a bit awkward and clunky, but the characters have charm and the ghosts have an appropriately dark edge despite the fun ectoplasmic housemate vibe.

I'm putting a hold on the next two volumes at my library to get the full story.

This was such a fun read! I really liked the storyline and I'm definitely curious to see how it's going to continue. Also, the drawing style is amazing and totally right up my alley. This graphic novel would be a great read for October, it's about ghosts, but it's not scary, just how I like my October reads since I can get easily scared lol

Ghosted in L.A. Vol 1 had a great premise. We follow a girl, Daphne, while after moving she meets new undead friends. The art is absolutely stunning, and the representation was also really good (jewish mc with bisexuality/pansexuality hints, lgbtq side characters). Unfortunately it was pretty boring and a bit confusing. The pacing of the timeline wasn't the best and it was really hard to follow and care about the story in this way. This series has potential, if it picks up I will definitely check the other volumes in the future. The characters were intriguing and definitely the best part of this volume.

This was a really fun, unique storyline! I loved the different personalities of the ghosts and the fact that each of them have a style that's representative of the times they died in. The twist with one of the ghosts was pretty fun, and I'm totally here for some cute queer ghost/living romance in the future if the story decides to follow that route with a couple of the side characters. The casual diversity was wonderful (the main character is Jewish and bisexual, multiple side characters are queer and/or POC) and the art and color palette were lovely. My only real complaint is that the main character is really obnoxious at times, but it's hard not to root for her despite that. Overall, I can't wait to continue in the next volume!

Thank you so much to the publisher for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Ghosted in L.A., Vol. 1 follows Daphne as she moves to LA for college and for a boy. She's basically just hopped off the plane at lax and gets dumped. Alone in a new city she stumbles upon Rycroft Manor whose residents are of the ghost variety.

This volume started out pretty weak for me. The problem is the focus on Daphne. She's the main character so we're stuck following her. Too bad she's nearly insufferable. She treats her best friend poorly, and when she meets the ghosts she's so inconsiderate and self-centered. Thankfully she gets less annoying towards the end.

The ghosts are what saved this graphic novel for me. They're interesting and I loved getting glimpses into their past lives. I'm looking forward to continuing the series and seeing where it goes.

This has a really nice art style as well.

To begin with, that cover pulled me in. Sure, the description and title sound awesome but the cover is just gorgeous! It pulls me in because I want to know why the lead is the center of attention. Those ghosts are bugging her and I need to know why, and she doesn't seem to phased... just annoyed?

We meet Daphne and she's going off to university. Her roommate seems crazy and locks her out of her room and her boyfriend breaks up with her, because who doesn't love drama day one of being away from home? And then she runs into a pole and finds herself at a creepy mansion. Normal Tuesday for most people, right?

And then she sees GHOSTS. Because life can't get any more crazy. And boy, are they SASSY. But Daphne makes friends with these ghosts and it seems like a grande idea! To make it better, these ghosts have different abilities too.

Life gets complicated for Daphne, and her and the ghosts have to learn to deal with all of the drama that comes with being a new adult. Oh, and they're all very quirky too. Some like her, some don't. On top of that, we get to see some of their pasts to understand them and their ways (and deaths).

I LOVE THIS GRAPHIC NOVEL. Seriously, it just hits me in all the right places. I can relate to Daphne, I love the ghosts and their quirks and I think it's just super fun.

I did have a chuckle because there are stars **** for swears. It had me giggling a bit, but I totally filled the words in with my own choices. Why not? I'm an adult. It's fun.

I've gotta say, I really enjoyed this graphic novel! If more volumes come out, I really want to dig into them because this book is so delightful! It's the type of story I've been looking for for a while. Fantastical, new adult, amusing and dramatic all wrapped up in one. I would say it's the perfect mix for me as a reader.

Five out of five stars!

Other Notes: The variance covers in the copy I got were BEAUTIFUL. Seriously, I love them! I can totally see why this cover is the original, but the variants are also pretty to look at.
Other Notes 2: WHY WOULD IT LEAVE OFF LIKE THAT?! Ugh. Cliff hanger! I need Volume 2 ASAP!

Thank you to NetGalley and BOOM! Studios for sending me a copy of this book to review! It's much appreciated!

I very rarely read graphic novels, but this is one I would read more of. I have to admit that Daphne -- a bi/pan Jewish woman -- wasn't necessarily the best protagonist I've ever read. She was rather bland, kind of like the typical 'I'm not like other girls' girl you see who takes on other people's personality traits and refuses to acknowledge her wealth or privilege. However, I did love her interactions with the ghosts and I feel like she's probably going to learn a lot about herself throughout the series.

The artwork, though... That's something else entirely. The colour palettes are gorgeous and I loved seeing the histories of some of the ghosts. Lots of LGBT rep in here which is a bonus! The ending was a little weak for me, although I can see some avenues that the story would take with it.

The story grabbed me almost by the sec. The art and color pallet were absolutely stunning! There's only so much LGBTQ+ representation
description right?
In this coming of age story we see Daphne having real struggles as she is presented to this new life as an adult and taking full responsibility for her actions.
Overall it was a light YA fantasy story and it's really easy to get into the world.
I can't wait to see what the second volume brings to us and I'm dying to know if there will be a paranormal romance.

This was super fun, and I only have to read two volumes for the story to conclude so I am happy. I missed reading light and funny graphic novels. This reminds me of Julie and The Phantoms (the best brazilian TV Show ever hahaha, but yes the Netflix version is fun too) so if you liked that TV Show I guess you would like to read this one!

This has been on my radar for ages, but I somehow never prioritized it. I am glad I finally got around to reading it, though, because I immediately really enjoyed this. It feels unique and very engaging. I like how distinctive all of the ghosts are, and I thought the pacing of the story was great. The ending left me very interested in seeing what's going to happen next!

The art is amazing but the main character Daphne was a self-centered airhead who continued to make poor decisions. Brint is a predator and annoys her but she still goes out with him?! Ronnie is cute but him not breaking up with Daphne before she moved her entire life to LA is not cool. I also find it ridiculous that in the last panel, after Daphne ghosted her best friend, her friend then decides to come down to “get some real face time”. Why is she wasting her time on Daphne?!A lot of the dialogue was cringe and I don’t understand why Daphne is a character anyone should care about.

I actually enjoyed the story with Daphne being with ghosts in a mysterious manor. She’s also bae and I ship her so much with Zola so much… I NEEDED MORE SCENES WHY DO THIS TO ME AUTHOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I also shipped Ronnie and Bernard, they are also adorable together like again WHY NO MORE SCENES WHY?!!

Now I wouldn’t be too gone in the story as there were a few plots holes without going into spoiler territory and just wasn’t happy with the ending. It could’ve expanded a wee bit more tbh..

Got this whole collection for free via Netgalley and BOOM Studios.

Representation: Bi Jewish main character & gay side characters

This was really fun and has such a interesting premise!

I too, would love to live in an old L.A. manor with a variety of ghosts from decades past.

I can't wait to learn more about each of the ghosts pasts! And Daphne's college roommate, Michelle.

A fun, unique graphic novel! The art is stunning and the colours used complemented each other so well on the page!

The premise was the first thing that hooked me. Living in a manor with ghosts who’ll give you advice on your social life? Sign me up!
This was a good introduction to Daphne and the ghosts. However, the plot was a bit lacking. The first volume eased the reader into the story and introduced all the characters. This felt a bit slow for me but it soon picked up halfway. Rest assured, this is only the first volume so there is definitely more ghostly shenanigans to come.

Daphne is a sweet main character, but I found her to be a bit bland. Nothing about her stands out. The ghosts, however, were really interesting. They all had different personalities and I am excited to read more about their pasts.
And to add: I loved how diverse the cast was! It was a breath of fresh air.

Overall, a good start to a new series! I will be checking out future volumes.

Daphnie follows her high school boyfriend to L.A., who then dumps her.

Her dormmate wants nothing to do with her.

And she can't seem to make friends with anyone except obnoxious boys.

Until she meets the ghosts somewhere in the Hollywood Hills, who take her in, and highjinks ensue.

Actually, that makes it sound as though it is all light hearted, but it is sweet, and cleaver, and filled with angst, and fun stuff like that.

This first volume makes me wanting to read the next one, now, please. I want to know about all the different ghosts and their lives, and how they ended up at this manor.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

A super hip and very L.A. comic book about a woman who moves from Missoula, Montana to LA. It appealed to me because I'm a woman who lives in LA but wants to move to Missoula! The story and dialog is nothing special, but I really liked the illustrations and colors. My favorite thing about it is that the last page of each issue has a mini-guide to LA naming some of my favorite spots. This would make a great fit to someone moving to LA, but seriously, no one should actually move to LA because the rent is expensive, the traffic is terrible, and we're all going to be under water in a few decades.

This was my first comic novel and I adored it. It was so cute and funny.
Daphne was a confusing main character with extremely quick mood switches and I felt the story too at times moved very fast, but it was an enjoyable read.
The illustrations were superb, I'd have to give that. And all the characters had their own backstories so that made it even more interesting.
I just felt like it ended too soon ah. Need the next vol right now!!! I can't wait to see how Daphne fares with the ghosts 😁😁

Thank you to Netgalley for providing me a copy of this arc! I absolutely loved this book. Everything about it was interesting to me from the beginning. A ghost story set in a mansion in LA? SIGN ME UP! I really liked the art style in this book, and it stood out to me from the very beginning. I developed a close bond with all the characters throughout the story, and their personalities really came through. I loved the soft color combinations throughout as well. The ending killed me though, I definitely want the second volume! Overall, highly recommend!

I really enjoyed the art in GHOSTED IN L.A. and I’m intrigued by the story. I liked Daphne right off though she’s pretty terrible at staying out of trouble. But she’s also only 18 years old and after having her heart broken, it’s expected that she’d make some rash decisions. We get a little backstory on a few of the ghosts as well as learn some of their extra powers but a surprise appearance of a new ghost will definitely make things interesting.

My review was first posted on Northern Plunder, you can read more of my reviews there too.

I often find myself on NetGalley, as well most bloggers do, to submit a review. Then before I know it, I’ve another 15 other books on request. It truly is a tricky road to balance. Though, I have to admit that for me it’s the graphic novels or mangas that trip me up.

And well, that’s what we’re here for today to review one of the graphic novels that caught my eye.

The art style for Ghosted in L.A. interests me and I’m happy to say the cover is a good depiction of the inside too. Also I did a little search and found out it’s LGBT+ story so of course I needed to read it. I am glad I did!

We’re introduced to Daphne during a fallout with her best friend as she doesn’t take well to being told she’s making the wrong decision to follow her boyfriend to L.A. for college. You get a good sense that these two have been friends for a long time, that she really understands Daphne, but as with in real life, it’s not easy to face a truth you’re not ready for. Upon arriving in L.A. Daphne’s luck doesn’t improve – her room mate has zero interest in being civil, never mind being friends, and then her boyfriend dumps her.

Whilst trying to find her feet and ground herself in a new city with no one to call a friend she stumbles into a quiet mansion. Feeling braver than usual and with no one around, she takes a swim… only to be confronted by some of the ghosts who live there. Look at this fabulous bunch!

I am here for the ghosts, for their design, and their stories. Siobhan has done perfectly in making sure that each ghost visually displays their personalities – it really adds to the story. Also, we’ve such a diverse cast throughout, not just in the ghosts! Did you happen to notice that Daphne is Jewish? Yep, I am in love. Alongside diversity in race, we’re also provided with a variety of LGBT+ characters. I have no doubt that there are more.

I believe what resonates most with me is that it deals with very real worries and struggles at starting a life in a new city, whilst adding these supernatural elements. Daphne’s has accidentally got a little ghostly found family in the making, they’ve already started to protect and support her. I can’t wait to see how she grows because of this area of comfort, but also how she helps them to grow. There appears to be a lot of secrecy and worries amongst them and I feel like Daphne input in their lives will be vital.

As with most first volumes, a lot of this graphic novel is setting up elements and hints at things to come. But it’s done it’s job and has me very invested with these characters.

Part of the main storyline explores coming to terms with your own sexuality, I really like how this was handled. I’m sure this will further be expanded upon down the road. The real element that caught my attention though is the ghosts. I want to know why they’re being chosen to stay at the mansion, what they’re threatened by, what their backstories are, and what each of their powers are. There is a lot we don’t know about them yet and I’m excited to find out.

Another area I’m looking forward to being explored more is Daphne’s roommate, I have no doubt that she has a much larger story to tell. There’s some hints at possible witchcraft or cult-like actions. Plus she’s pretty cute. (No, what do you mean I have a Type! Leave me alone.)

Overall, Ghosted in L.A. was a humorous and engaging read. It has a lot of potential so I’ll definitely be there for volume 2. This is one of those NetGalley reads that has 100% landed on my “must buy” pile as I can’t wait to have it on my own bookshelf.

Ghosted in LA is my first graphic novel of the year and I am not disappointed!
The storyline follows a girl who just moved to LA for college. She has a rough start and to make things complicated she encounters a manor with ghosts. These ghosts are unique individuals who seem to be stuck in the manor.
I really like the diversity of the characters and the illustrations. The representation in this novel is amazing! I enjoyed the shifts of point of view of each character that gave us a glimpse of the ghost’s past. I do think the main character, Daphne, is a bit obnoxious but I see a potential of character growth. Another aspect I did not like was how fast things happened at the beginning. There was so much going on to a point of it not being plausible. But I do understand it’s a graphic novel and after that, it was enjoyable to read.
Overall, it was a lovely read and I am looking forward to reading more of Daphne and her adventures. Thank you to Netgalley and Boom!Box for the copy in exchange of an honest review.
