Stephie Walls is a literary whore - she loves words in all forms and will read anything put in front of her. She has an affinity for British Literature and Romance novels and an overall love of writing. She currently has fifteen novels out, six short stories, and two collections; all provocatively written to elicit your imagination and spice up your world.
Those who have read Stephie Walls before will remember her release this time last year - Gravel Road which featured the story of Miranda aka Randi and Austin Burin. In Beaten Paths, we go back into the same family and a similar story. At the beginning of Gravel Road, we read as Randi was grounded from her sister Sarah and decided to walk out of home and head to the lake with Austin and her friends. Sarah, feeling very angry with Randi decided to go after her and tragedy ensued and she was in a car crash. This accident was the point Randi left the story to find her own way in the world as she knew Sarah's accident was her fault and after some nasty words with her dad Jack - she ran away. Of course, in the end, we saw her head back home to her family and reunite with Sarah and Charlie and their children. Beaten Paths to me felt like it should have been Book #1 as this is Sarah's story of her journey after the accident, finding out Randi is no longer at home and the worrying she may never speak to her sister again and of course her falling in love with Charlie Burin. As we do know Sarah overcomes a lot during her story and Beaten Paths delves deeper into the emotional side of Sarah's recovery as this was only briefly touched on in Gravel Road. If you have read Gravel Road, then Beaten Paths will touch lightly on a few of the same story and I feel it should have been a prequel or at least written first. If not, then read Beaten Paths before moving onto Gravel Road by Stephie Walls.
This book is just amazing and beautiful! It will wreck your heart and put you back together. Sarah and Charlie's journey is special and Stephie Walls has taken so much care with these characters that you will feel every emotion right along with them. Go into this story blind if you can so that you can be emotionally moved. This is the follow up to Gravel Road but if you haven't read that story yet I would suggest reading this story first and then read Gravel Road. Both books are beautifully written and heartfelt journeys of love, trauma, self-discovery, family, and acceptance.
This specific video review will be included in the September 2019 wrap-up.

With Beaten Paths, Stephie Walls gave me everything my heart desired and MORE!
After reading both books, I believed in what I thought when I read Gravel Road, that the story of Charlie and Sarah needed to be told because there's no Austin and Randi without Charlie and Sarah.
One decision changed Sarah's path forever, and although the consequences were devastating, the outcome was magical, and Charlie Burin became the knight in shining armor she didn't know she needed.
I just to think that Austin was the right Burin brother for me, but I was wrong because Charlie is. He is every woman's dream, and I'm truly and irrevocably in love with him.
I can't wait to read more from Stephie Walls, who is fast becoming one of my favorite authors.
Stephie Walls is a favored writer for me. She writes love, angst, commitment, family, struggle and perseverance. Her stories always have strong and honorable characters that have flaws and make mistakes.
It’s awful to say and I realize it isn’t fair, but I wasn’t really fond of Sarah Adams in Gravel Road where we first meet her. She had a choice and I felt she chose wrong. But in Beaten Paths she’s much more than I realized. She’s brave, fierce and selfless. She’s given so much of herself to her family that she left little for herself.
Charlie Burin is a really great guy. He’s hardworking, no doubt, but he’s also the support Sarah didn’t see coming and his unwavering strength and commitment to her is every woman’s dream.
Their story is sweet, a little frustrating at times and not always easy. But as the saying goes, nothing worth having ever is.
I'm going to start this review off with the praise that Stephie Walls deserves. Her writing is one that I have become addicted to. And its all because of how true to life her stories are. Not all romances need to be about characters instantly falling in love, or battling their feelings for one another. No a good romance can be one that is a story about a couple building a real relationship, the real ups and downs that can come with relationships. Stephie Walls makes it so easy to relate to the characters and their journey to love.
Now onto my review...
Sarah and Charlie. If your like me and have devoured all the words written by Stephie Walls, you may recognize these two from Gravel Road. And no you do not have to read Gravel Road before you dive into Beaten Paths, actually you will be perfectly happy reading Gravel Road after finishing this book, since Sarah and Charlies story takes place before it. Sarah is learning to live as normal of a life as she can after a near fatal accident. Charlie finds himself drawn to Sarah after seeing her trying not to break down. He finally notices the girl that he never truly saw before. Their relationship is one that starts off as a friendship that slowly turns into a budding romance. You will find yourself totally swooning over Charlie as you see their love grow. Sarah's a lot stronger than anyone ever thought. And when certain complications arise for Charlie and Sarah their relationship is tested.
I could not put this book down. But, like I've said before Stephie is one of my favorite authors for a reason. And its because I can see this story playing in my head like a movie. Now I would like to mention that there is somewhat undertones of religion when it comes to certain parts of this book. But, these undertones aren't something that I feel took away from the way that Sarah and Charlie's story. It was just a part of the characters themselves. This is definitely a book that i would recommend fans of contemporary romance to check out.
"But sometimes, it’s the journey that makes the destination so worthwhile"
Stephie Walls took her readers on a rough and spirited journey. This book is filled with so many emotions and personal conflicts, it got me holding my breath and grinding my teeth not once while turning these pages. At times I felt so angry that I wanted to whack my Kindle at the wall. And at one point I felt like I might not have guts to continue on as my poor heart was so hurting for the characters, I thought it will burst.
Charlie and Sarah grew up side by side, Sarah had a crush on Charlie for years, but she only let herself dream about him from afar as she was busy helping her father to look after a farm and raise her younger sister. Charlie didn't notice Sarah until she got into a nasty accident and end up in a hospital. The news that Sarah might never be able to walk again, numerous surgeries and scrutinising painful Physiotherapy make Sarah lose faith and strength to keep trying to keep fighting. This is when Charlie becomes way more than just a crush for Sarah. He is her saviour and her biggest motivation.
There's one long and beaten path Sarah needs to walk but with Charlie by her side, everything seems to be so much tolerant. All seem to be fine and the future looks bright for these two beautiful souls when life throws more challenges than they might be able to handle.
A beautiful story about family commitment, support and loyalty. It's a heartbreaking and emotional book that will consume you from the first pages.
Sarah Adams nearly died. Injured so severely there were moments everyone including the doctors didnt this she would survive...but she does. Now starts the process of recovery. Physical therapy. Pain Heartache when she discovers her sister has disappeared and no one knows where she is. Enter family friend Charlie Burin, who she has known for years, but who she believes doesnt even know her name.
Charlie works his farm and now is helping at her family's farm and when he finds Charlie n the hospital bed he cant seem to leave. This girl is broken and seems to have no one trying to uplift her. He starts showing up, pushing her, making her believe she will walk again. While doing so he slowly falls for her. She has crushed on him since school.
Now just when things look bright life throws more carp at them and again she will have to face death again.
There was a few minor issues that kept me from giving a perfect score things I cant say here or id spoil a really good book.
This amazing, angst ridden book was awesome! The story is a love story of Charlie and Sarah who beyond the craziness of circumstances- find one another and have their hea. I loved the angst in this book and was forever wondering until the very end of their hea. More than a love story, this is a story of happiness after experiencing extreme hardships.
Wowee this book certainly takes you on one hell of a bumpy journey! This is my second read by this author and this definitely makes me want to go and read her all her books. Absolutely jam packed with crushing moments that leave you wondering just what is going to happen next. Sarah and Charlie have grown up together but never really had much to do with each other, despite the fact that Sarah has always crushed on Charlie. When Sarah has a major accident, things start to change between them and feelings start to grow.. but its not all plain sailing and not as straightforward as they want all the time. Loved these characters, the feelings, the angst, the uniqueness of the storyline, just loved it all! Onto Mirandas story asap for me *Read as part of KU*
BEATEN PATHS is a wonderful story of love overcoming insurmountable odds. How one near-death accident has a domino affect on so many lives. So many lives are changed forever. Some for the good and others for the not so good. One chance encounter can make all of one young woman's dreams come true. Yet can shatter another young girl's dreams to pieces.
Sarah Adams was in a hospital bed, lost, alone and in so much pain. You can only imagine what kind of shape she was in after her sedan had been T-boned by a semi. The only thing the town knew was that Sarah was in a very bad way, and it wasn't for certain if she would even pull through. She had been placed in a medically induced coma to give her body the best chance at survival. She had been revived twice when she flat-lined. She had only been out of the coma a short time, but had lost her will to fight. She was in so much pain, and all of it hurt so much, and everyday was so hard. When she had felt her lowest, she looked up to see him! Charlie Burin. And her life would never be as lonely again. She had a crush on him forever, but didn't think he even knew her name. In her hopeless existence he brought hope. Everyone had left, but Charlie had stayed. Charlie was her champion. And when he was with her, she didn't feel like it was just her against the world. Charlie looked at Sarah and didn't know how he had missed how beautiful & wonderful she truly was for twenty-six years.
This book is very thoughtfully written. There will be many anguish full moments. It caught my interest from the very first page, until the very last page. This is a really good love story, but no love story is ever perfect, and Sarah & Charlie's love story isn't perfect either. After you have read Beaten Path, you will be able to read Gravel Road, which is Miranda Adams and Austin Burin's story. This book is already released. Happy Reading!
What an amazingly beautiful story. Beaten Paths was so much more than I expected. You would have already met these characters in Gravel Road and I will admit I did not know how much I needed this story until I finished reading it. Stephie Walls gave us a roller coaster ride of emotion with this novel. The angst, the heartbreak, the pain all served to make the sweet moments that more pleasurable. This is a story about determination and having strength to overcome the impossible and Sarah was the very definition of strength. Its about having someone believe in you when you're ready to give up. Its a story that shows how much good can come from something bad but only if you don't give up. Sarah and Charlie were two of the most amazing characters and I could not help but love them both. The way Charlie stood my Sarah in her time of need was a true testament of his character. Their story started out as a friendship that blossomed into love. Their story will touch your heart and will give you all the feels. It was told in dual POV and we are given direct look into the minds of these characters to better understand their thoughts and feelings. I don't have enough words to describe how much I enjoyed this novel. Definitely worthy of a star status, this well-written page-turner was a fantastic read and I would highly recommend it to all lovers of contemporary romance.
Oh my gosh!! I cannot believe this is THE Sarah and Charlie’s story!!! I know that when Author Stephie Walls writes a book, I’m reading it. It’s just a given. So I read the blurb, drool over the cover, and wait for it up drop. It’s rare that I dig too much to find out more about the novel; I want to be surprised. Surprised doesn’t even cover my reaction to this novel. I was completely engaged by Beaten Paths. Overjoyed. Ecstatic. Blubbering mess of happy tears. I loved Gravel Road. That story gave me such a high with hope and love. But, holy smokes. The lightning fast love of these two souls, Charlie and Sarah, solidified a new level of infatuation. They were both courageous and had a pure strength that was, no doubt, enhanced by their faith in God and each other. The fight to overcome never stopped, not for one page. But their journey to the treasures of life was truly one of the most touching. I am so thrilled that the author decided to write Charlie and Sarah’s story. If you haven’t read this novel or Gravel Road, you can start with either without spoiling things. I’m about to dive back into Gravel Road just to get another taste of Austin and Miranda’s story. It’s that good!
I honestly don’t even know what to say about this book. I have been hoping we would get Sarah’s story since I was halfway through Gravel Road and holy crap we did we get it. I won’t say much as I don’t want to spoil anything in anyway.
This book though has everything. Love, angst, heartbreak, pain. You name it and you will probably feel it one way or another. Sarah and Charlie’s story is unique and one for the books ( no pun intended) I honestly love everything about them and how they came to be. This book comes after Gravel Road but you could honestly read it before and it wouldn’t ruin anything. I highly recommend this book. Way to knock it out of the park Stephie!!
What a powerful and emotional story! Sarah and Charlie faced so many obstacles, but never gave up. Sarah is the definition of strength and willpower, while Charlie is loving and devoted. Sarah believes in hope and miracles, but Charlie is a bit more skeptical. Sarah had me believing right along with her. I hoped their love would help Charlie's fears about Sarah's heath. I loved this story and definitely hope to read Miranda's story soon.
This book gutted me, in a good way though. All the ups and downs with my emotions. But that always happens while reading one of Stephie’s books. I want a Charlie for myself, he’s the ultimate Book Boyfriend. He’s caring, loving and will stop at nothing to make Sarah happy. Sarah is strong and determined which got her through her recovery after the near fatal accident. I loved this book and highly recommend it and all of Stephie Walls books.
This is a wonderful story of strength, determination, love, heartbreak, and full of emotion. From the first page I was hooked. I never wanted it to end. Going through the pages and feeling all the emotions Sarah felt, and knowing Charlie would always be there to give her strength was swoon worthy. The journey these two go on is worth the read. You will not be disappointed.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
An emotional journey of love, acceptance and overcoming all the odds at whatever the cost. I loved Sarah and Charlie’s story and fell in love with the both of them. An accident affects Sarah’s life in so many ways that she finds herself facing some unexpected obstacles. This is one story that I savored and tried not to devour...it was just that good. Highly recommend for all the feels and powerful emotions.
I loved this book! I mean, I love everything that Stephie Walls writes because she's incredible so I may be a bit bias. That said, Charlie is every girls dream man/book boyfriend. He's hot, kind, thoughtful, loving, sexy af, and ever so swoon-worthy. If you love a book that grabs your interest with the first sentence and doesn't ever let go - read this one! So good!!!
In true Stephie Walls fashion, she hit this one out of the park!! It was an emotionally charged story of love, heartache and overcoming the odds. It was a total page turner. Couldn't put it down once I started.
I am most definitely in the minority here. So much so I wonder if I read a completely different book. I had such high hopes for Beaten Paths, especially since my first book by her a few months ago was one of my most favorite books, a 6 star read.
I struggled with a huge chunk of this book. For me, it was so much surface. Not much depth, even with the heavy topics. There was more tell than show. I seriously didn't get why they loved each other. We spent more time in their heads then with them together.
Sarah's's loved him since she was a teenager. Charlie's never acknowledged her until she was in the hospital after a horrendous accident. What he saw in her, other than a bit of strength and broken girl, I don't know. But in 26 years he avoided her, until that day in the hospital. One look in her eyes and he's gone. So much so that he drops his entire life to be with her every. day., and falls in love with her, close to instantly. Next to no real deep moments. A few deep convos here and there. We are told of all the time they spent together, but we never really see it and most of the moments we do, again it is surface.
Other than how hot (which we are told over and over...*barf*) Charlie is, I didn't know much else about him. I really didn't care how easy on the eyes he was. I got it the first 1000 times. Was he a good guy for staying with Sarah and inspiring her? Yes. They were both likable characters. If the author just delved into each of them deeper they could have been loved and remembered for more than I'm about to include in a spoiler tag.
And then there was the second half of the book that should have had me bawling my eyes out and feeling so much deep emotions. Instead I felt annoyance.
So yeah, this book was a mess for me. Not something I would rec but so many others loved it.
Me pareció una historia hermosa, aunque hay ciertas cosas en la narrativa que no me gustaron. Es una novela que nos deja la enseñanza a nunca dejar de creer y lugar por lo que queremos. Aunque todo parezca estar en nuestra contra.
It's always amazing to have new books to read, but it's even more amazing to have another book from an author that you adore. Stephie Walls has given me some of the most intense books ever and I loved every page. Now she has a new book and that nervous tickle was there. Beaten Paths is her latest release and tells the stories of Sarah and Charlie. But let me just say one this. Even though this book is a standalone, I advise you to read Beaten Paths first. This book will tell you a bit about Sarah and the situation that lead her to this accident. Just read it. And then read Gravel Road. You'll see why... Sarah had to take care of her sister, and by doing so she sometimes took some decisions that weren't accepted. One night, after she found out that her sister had run away she went after her and got herself into an accident. Now she needs to recover but... Charlie is a hardworking guy with a huge heart. He knows only one thing, that Sarah needs him and he will do everything he can to help her. OMG... I knew that I love this author but after this book, I love her even more. This book was off charts and you will fall in love with it right away. I just have this urge to read Gravel Road again. Superb plot, very well written, super engaging, intense and overwhelming. Each chapter was even more intense than the other and I simply couldn't put it down. I wanted to keep reading, I needed to keep reading. While going it pieces of Gravel Road kept popping into my mind and everything made sense. All the gaps that the previous book left, we're fulfilled with the answers this book provided. The chemistry these two share is perfect and so strong that could literally move mountains. If I was curious about another character from this series, now I'm even more anxious. Thank God that I know that that book is on the working. Stephie... I've said this a thousand times before and I'll keep saying it another thousand. You, my dear girl, are amazing, and your words got stuck in my mind, heart, and soul. I'm so blessed for the chance to read your books.I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
This story is about the struggle that Sarah, Randi's sister from Gravel Road, went through after the incident that occurred. We know how the story ends because we got to see her life through Randi's eyes in Gravel Road. But this allowed us to see the struggles Sarah faced and her endurance to fight for more, as well as how her love bloomed for her life-long crush.
Being honest here, I really didn't care of Sarah in Gravel Road, and I was not so taken with her in Beaten Paths, but she did have some redeeming qualities. This story shows her strength and perseverance to grab life by the horns and move forward, which is more than what we could say for Randi during her story. But Sarah also made her own bed. She acted in ways that were not hers to act, which resulted in the fight she found herself in. She needed to be a sister, not a mother. And her father needed to be a father, and not absent for both her and Randi, even with him being a single parent. But in the end they all triumphed and made it through their long road home!
With this story, we also get to see Charlie grow up, even though he was an adult, but Sarah helped provide the stability he really always needed. Their love story wasn't intense and all encompassing, but it was tried and true and those stories are always nice to read.
This was a good round-out for Sarah and Charlie, as well as Randi and Austin. Even though we knew the ending, it was still nice to see he middle parts too!
Beaten Paths is a spinoff of Stephie Wall's 2018 release Gravel Road. That book had told the story of Randi and Austin, and how Randi ran away as a teenager after an accident that nearly killed her older sister, Sarah. (Sarah went out looking for Randi after a fight, and was hit by a car.) Now we come to Beaten Paths, which is Sarah's story, and her tale of love with Austin's brother, Charlie.
I love how Charlie was the last person Sarah was expecting to be by her side as she recovered, but he was strong, supportive and just there every step of the way. She'd long had a crush on him, and then suddenly he appeared in her life like a guardian angel, giving her hope where she thought there was none. Charlie hasn't exactly had an easy go of things in life either. But he finds a kindred soul in Sarah and wonders how he never knew how wonderful she was.
There are some frustrating moments in Beaten Paths, but Charlie and Sarah have a wonderful relationship, and Stephie Walls does a great job of vividly creating the loss and pain Sarah's going through. I didn't like Sarah much in Gravel Road, but reading Beaten Paths gave me a much different outlook on Randi's big sister and what she'd gone through as having to be the mother figure.
I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
