During the first vacation she's taken in years, Logan looks forward to sharing the beauty of the Oregon coast with Ben and her family. They quickly immerse themselves in summer fun. Ocean walks, caramel corn by the fire, a visit to the aquarium, a charter boat fishing trip, and to top it off, tickets for Logan and Ben to an amazing, in-home classical music concert featuring visiting musicians from China. But within days, Logan finds herself inexorably dragged into a homicide investigation—as a possible suspect! While reeling from that discovery, Logan is forced to face a ghost from her past and make a thorny, personal decision that will change everyone's lives, including her brother, Rick's. Weaving themes of loss, healing, forgiveness, family, love, and community, Davisson's characters all seek a safe harbor, but not all of them find one.
A book addict from way back, I cut my teeth on fairy tales and C.S. Lewis, skipping class to hang out in the library. Later, I moved on to Tolkein and Twain. During graduate school, I only had time to read Anthropology books, so it wasn't until later I got hooked on Mysteries and Thrillers. Michael Conneally's Bosch, Sue Grafton's Kinsey Milhone, C.J. Box, J.A. Jance's Sheriff Brady, and Nevada Barr's Anna Pigeon. I don't know about you, but I burned through those books as fast as I could discover a new series. Still do!
But it wasn't until I had a serious back injury that I realized how important well-written stories were to me. I could get lost in a good book. They kept my mind off of things over which I had not control. And even though they were pure fiction, the ones with strong, female protagonists inspired me to overcome my own hurdles in life. I realized I not only enjoyed reading them, but I wanted to write books like that.
Somewhere during that time, the character of Logan McKenna began to take shape, eventually turning into my first book of the Logan series, SHATTERED. With 8 books and a novella prequel in the series so far, I am grateful readers have enjoyed getting to know Logan and friends and keep buying the books, allowing me to do what I love. I am rarely happier than when I am at my keyboard, headphones clamped on my head, listening to ocean waves crashing on rocks (my go-to white noise), allowing the story to flow out of my fingertips.
I also love to hear from readers. It may take a while due to my research and writing schedule, but I will answer!
My husband and I live in our dream forest cottage on the Oregon coast with our dog, Finn. We have six children and numerous grandchildren, grand dogs and a few grand cats. When I'm not at the computer, I'm usually out walking Finn or in the kitchen trying new recipes.
The writing started with cast of each character filled a detailed description and history when a new person enters the action. The dramas for each character seems to be extreme. The writing is smooth and easy to read. The plot brings a great imagination. The suspense is constant issues to keep the reader engrossing. The Oregon beach is detailed as beautiful it could been. I couldn't easy to set the book down. Overall a good book!
Safe Harbor is a wonderfully written crime novel with interesting characters and beautiful descriptions of the scenery along the Pacific coast of Oregon.
Logan, the main character in the novel, is on vacation with her boyfriend, her adult daughter, her son-in-law, and her grandson. They have traveled from California to go fishing and whale watching in the small town of Depoe Bay, Oregon. Unfortunately, a murder occurs in this normally peaceful town and Logan gets caught up in the investigation.
I was particularly impressed with the detail used to describe some of the minor characters such as a young homeless woman who witnessed the crime and also with the way the writer gave us an interesting subplot concerning Logan’s background that had nothing to do with the main issue, but helped make Logan a fascinating character. Valerie Davisson took the time to make her novel work on multiple levels.
Safe Harbor is book 5 in Davisson’s Logan McKenna Series, but it is the first of her novels I've read. She did a good job of giving me the background information I needed without interrupting the flow of the story. Still, I would recommend other readers start with the first book. If the others come even close to the quality of this one, the time would be well spent reading the entire series.
Five stars. I have thoroughly enjoyed the Logan Makenna series from the first book, and Safe Harbor was no different. Logan and her family are supposed to be in Oregon on vacation, but of course she gets caught up in another crime. Valerie does such a great job writing all of the characters down to minor, to me, details. I am very excited for the sixth book to come out this month!!
Logan just can't catch a break!! She takes her family on vacation and trouble seems to follow her wherever she goes. She and Ben go on a boat/fishing excursion and at the conclusion of that, they both witness an argument because the boat's captain and a former employee. The next thing they know, the boat captain is dead and Logan's phone is found and is evidence towards finding the one who did it.
This one has a pretty diverse cast of characters and the stories are becoming more developed as the series continues. I'm really enjoying this series!
Safe Harbor is the fifth instalment in The Logan McKenna Series by Valerie Davisson. Logan McKenna has been through a lot over the course of the series- and this story sees her in a predicament she could never have predicted. Life seemed to finally be back on track- and the future looked bright. But then on a well-earned vacation with her family, Logan finds herself a suspect in a murder investigation- and things begin to get complicated as she will need to deal with her past as well as make a crucial decision that will impact her life. So, get set for a murder mystery that also touches on loss, healing forgiveness, family, love, and community- while delivering on the drama and angst.
SAFE HARBOR (A Logan McKenna Mystery Book 5) by Valerie is a crime story and once again Logan finds herself embroiled in trouble. The story is both heart warming and heart wrenching at the same time. Being the fifth book in the series we have learned a lot about Logan McKenna but in this book she will have to dig deep and take a look at herself and her past. One thing we definitely know is that Logan’s curiosity and her need to solve a riddle or puzzle will ultimately get her into danger.
Even though I know the murderer Valerie holds my interest
Valerie Davisson puts more mundane details in her books than most writers, but I still get caught up in the story. jian has upended his life and the life of his sister because of his envy. He has a gambling addiction and borrowed money from a criminal. It causes him to steal from his hosts and to kill their son because he's afraid that his sister Meiling is going to cause him and their family trouble because she's having an affair with Adam, the son of their hosts the Hostlers. Meiling and Jian are from China. Her failure to return would destroy his future. Logan is caught up in the mess as a suspect. Jian used her phone to text Adam to meet up with him. Logan had not reported it stolen because she thought she'd simply misplaced it. I gave it four stars because I feel there are some problems with things presented in the story. Ms. Davison has Meiling and Jian speaking in English while talking in the hospital about the murder. Since they are Chinese nationals, they would naturally speak in their first language while discussing such a stressful issue. Because she goes into great detail on mundane issues, there are errors in facts that Ms. Davisson presents. Eric, the young man who worked with Adam and discovered his body, is listed as age 27 on one page and age 25 on another page. The lead detective puts two sugars and heavy cream in his coffee while at the station but drinks it black when Ben offers them coffee. Grant, who is with him, brings his own coffee to the station because he only drinks decaf once it's no longer morning, yet he drinks Ben's coffee. Even with these things, I enjoy her books and am becoming more addicted the more I read. She provides lots of excitement in her books and gives us characters we really get to know. I'm looking forward to getting to know Logan's mother better. She's a more complicated figure than we thought.
I am a big fan of Valerie Davisson’s ‘Logan McKenna Mystery’ series and have enjoyed all four previous books in the series and this fifth instalment was the best one yet. Back with Logan McKenna, who now feels like an old friend and as usual she finds herself in the middle of a mystery, this time it’s two deaths, one real and one psychological. Logan is enjoying her first vacation in years and along with Ben and her family make the most of some summer fun on the Oregon coast. Logan and Ben even have tickets for an in-home classical music concert featuring visiting musicians from China. Shockingly Logan then finds herself inexorably dragged into a homicide investigation as a possible suspect. As if that wasn’t enough to cope with Logan is then forced to face a ghost from her past and has to make a personal decision that will affect everyone’s lives including her brother Rick’s. This latest novel featuring our independent and feisty heroine Logan manages to weave a number of themes including, “loss, healing, forgiveness, family, love, and community” and although all of Davisson's well defined characters all seek a safe harbor, sadly not all of them will find one. I was hooked from page one and gripped from start to finish whilst reading this crime mystery story. The storyline is fast paced and the plot is full of drama, suspense, mystery and crime and is full of twists and turns that kept me guessing until the very last page. I enjoy following Logan as she investigates the mystery and felt fully immersed in the story. The narrative flows well making this an enjoyable and engaging read and the characters all add something different to the overall storyline. I personally think this series has got better and better and I definitely recommend this book and the previous ones in the series.
SAFE HARBOR (A Logan McKenna Mystery Book 5) By Valerie Davisson 5 out of 5 stars
I loved reading the book SAFE HARBOR (A Logan McKenna Mystery Book 5) by Valerie Davisson. It is a story that includes mystery, danger, and suspense. In this book, Logan McKenna finds herself right in the middle of a homicide investigation. Will the killer be caught? I love the character of Logan as she is an intelligent, strong, and independent woman. She has a wonderful relationship with Ben and loves that she has her family near her. Logan is a woman who is successful and also cares about others. When needed she has a strong determination to find out the whole truth to any investigation that she becomes involved in. Logan also finds herself facing someone from the past that could have an impact not only on her life but on the lives of those she cares for as well. This story had me turning pages wondering what was going to happen next. It is suspenseful and had me on the edge of my seat. The author does an amazing job of writing a book that is exciting and entertaining. I didn’t want to put it down until the final page. It is a story I would highly recommend reading.
Safe Harbor A Logan McKenna Mystery Book 5 By Valerie Davisson ☆☆☆☆☆ This is a fully intense mystery. You will get to follow Logan as she works on solving a crime. Sit down and get ready!
Logan McKenna is so ready for vacation with her family. The first in a longtime and headed to the Oregon coast. Logan and Ben take their children on many mini trips, the ocean, the aquarium, a fishing trip on a chartered boat, and ending with a concert with musicians from China. We all know this will be two unexpected deaths. Logan is found to be in the middle of a crime and spends the rest of her vacation proving her innocence.
Valerie Davisson has written this Crime story. A true rollercoaster ride of solving this murder. All of your feels will be out in the open. I love reading and following Logan, as she investigates her innocence in this murder. Bringing justice to the guilty. Some of the characters will break your heart, others will make you so mad. Brothers are sometimes caught in trouble and their own family is thrown into their mistakes. Please don't throw your tablet! You will need it to finish this story. I can't wait for book 6.
This is another fantastic Logan Mckenna Crime novel by Valerie Davisson. Logan Mckenna has become one of my most favorite characters in a crime novel as of late. In this novel, she finds herself in the middle of another situation along the coast of Oregon. She is traveling with her boyfriend, daughter and her daughter’s family. They are there to whale watch and maybe get a little fishing in. But per usual, murder seems to happen where Logan is and once again she finds herself helping with the investigation. Once again, one of my favorite parts of this Logan Mckenna novel is the side characters. Those characters we meet who are part of the investigation in some way shape or form. The author always puts an impeccable amount of detail into these characters and makes them such an integral part of the story. This is yet another Valerie Davisson Novel that I did not want to put down. It contains her usual wonderful characters and a plot that has so much detail that it is hard to walk away from. I definitely recommend it and I cannot wait for the next Logan Mckenna novel!
I love Logan McKenna but wish, just a little that her curiosity and need to solve a puzzle didn't get her into danger. Of course, we wouldn't have superb mysteries to read. Valerie Davisson asked me to beat read this book, and I found it fascinating and was grateful to have a chance to follow Logan's life through this segment. I then purchased and just finished rereading it, enjoying it even more the second time. This novel is both heartwarming and heart wrenching, and I encourage you to read it. I'm very much looking forward to the next chapter in Logan's life. Character development and setting are well written. Learning more about Logan's family with a surprising new addition is interesting. And the resolutions of the various expertly interwoven plot lines is most satisfying. Again, the pace is perfectly smooth with just the speed of forward motion that I enjoy. Congratulations, Val, on another winner! (p.s. They misspelled my surname...autoINcorrect always changes Henri to Henry. 😉)
When Logan is dropped into a mystery can she come out of it unscathed?
Logan and Ben have decided to go on a holiday to Oregon with Logan's daughter, her husband and Logan's grandchild but as always things don't stay calm for long.
As they are enjoying the trip with the family Logan is thrusted into a murder but this time she is also one of the prime suspects, can she try and find the murderer in time to clear herself but will this open wounds of the past.
This is the fifth book in this wonderful series and the stories just keep getting better and better. I do have to say that this is the best one so far, the details that are unrevealing and you get to see more into the character of Logan. I love the relationship she has with Ben and he seems to ground the character which is great to read.
The second characters are wonderfully written and I feel give another depth to the story. The mystery element is not rushed and draws you into the story with its twists and turns. A really great read and love to read more of Logan in the future.
Safe Harbor is Book 5 in the Logan McKenna series, but it can be enjoyed as a stand alone book. The characters overlap, and there are references to past events, but it isn't lacking. The information is provided with enough detail that a reader would do just fine without having read those stories. I have read some of the series, but not all books and not even in order. Logan is always finding herself in the middle of suspenseful and dangerous situations. This book was one of my favorites I have read in the series, it is full of suspense and doesn't all come together until the end. While we kind of know where the story is headed, there are still twists and turns along the way. Logan is on vacation with her family, and is soon a suspected murderer. It is all a lot of wrong place at the wrong time, all around, but it works. I recommend this to readers who enjoy suspense mysteries, without the spooky psychological thrill. I didn't want to put the book down, but wasn't terrified to finish either. The title was NOT what I expected Safe Harbor to be referring to, but again, it works.
What a wonderful read this book was, it was so well written, I truly enjoy reading The Logan McKenna Series by Valerie Davisson. Safe Harbor, unfortunately for Logan McKenna, is not all that it promises. As a suspect in a murder and being the next in line for the actual killer, she's got her hands full, when all she wanted to do was take a much-needed vacation with Ben and her family. This is the 5th book in this series, and I can honestly say I am having a hard time putting it down. It is such a magical book to read, it has so much drama, thrills, and excitement that you are scared to walk around in the dark wondering what may be hiding around the corner. Not only does Logan suffer from being accused of murder, but she also must face her past, and wade her way through trying to stay on her two feet, without being dragged down by everything happening around her. Every book in this series just keeps taking it up a notch, getting more and more exciting as the series goes on. @Brandy Rymer 11/2023
I am just blown away by the way the author is able to describe the scenes in this book. It makes it feel like you are watching a movie or are even in the book yourself. That being said this is the 5th book in the series and each book can be read as a stand alone. I would recommend reading them from the beginning because you are able to see the growth of the main character, Logan. This book takes us to a vacation that Logan, her boyfriend, and adult daughter go on. Personally speaking, I am now wanting to go on a vacation. Maybe, without the mystery in the book but it would definitely make things a little more exciting. This book was a quick read because I just didn't put it down. I kept turning pages to see what was going to happen and who did what. It is always interesting to see how Logan get involved in all of these adventures. She by any means does not lead a dull life. If you are looking for a quick escape that will have you thinking you could solve any mystery thrown at you, this is your series.
Safe Harbor is book 5 to the Logan McKenna series. You could read it as a standalone, but I would personally suggest that you just read them all! They are so good and you won't want to put them down!! The series gets better and better with every book and I am not at all ashamed to say that I have lost quite a bit of sleep over this series and I would do it all over again!! Grab these books!!!! Once again Logan is dragged into a homicide mystery. This woman just can't stay away from trouble! Finally on a vacation with her family and Ben, she looks forward to seeing Oregon. So much fun to be had during their summer trip. Maybe?? Visiting an aquarium, ocean walks, a boat fishing charter, and even tickets for a classical concert for her and Ben!! But now she's a suspect! So of course she is trust back into the life of investigator. Digging into another murder she has to find the killer before she goes down for the crime herself!! This author has hooked me from book one, but man let me tell you that so far they are all so great!!!! You have to read this series!!
SAFE HARBOR (A Logan McKenna Mystery Book 5) by Valerie Davisson. I can't even describe how much I have loved this series. Its such a good murder msystery series and while I have enjoyed reading each book in order you can read them as standalone as well. Its the continuing story of Logan McKenna. In this book we find Logan thinking she can finally enjoy a family vacation in Oregon with Ben and her family. As soon as Logan gets relaxed she finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation. Not only is she in the middle of the investigation she is a suspect. So much for a vacation. While trying to find out exactly how this murder occurred and who did it she finds someone from her past that is not welcome company! Logan is strong, independent and caring but this case may finally do her in. Will she find out who and why this person murdered the victim and set her up to take the fall. Read Safe Harbor to find out. You will not be disappointed!
So this one is my favorite of all the Logan McKenna books. The story is great and full of action and suspense. The chapter are short so it’s easy to say....just one more chapter then I’ll shut out the light. But guess what? Doesn’t happen. The characters have really developed over time and have finally reached their potential. I liked how Logan got swept into this investigation and didn’t place herself there.
I found I was sucked into this story. It has a full cast of characters that lead me on a wonderful chase. Who did it? Who is involved with whom? There are exes, Chinese thugs, FBI, musicians, sea boat captains and more! I don’t want to forget Logan, Ben and her daughters family all on a vacation to Oregon when the unspeakable happens.
Overall as I mentioned this is my favorite of the series. The writing flowed better and the story left out the unimportant/fluff and inserted action, drama and suspense that kept me interested and turning pages.
Safe Harbor is the fifth book in the Logan Mckenna Mystery Series. It can be enjoyed as a standalone mystery - it’s the first that I’ve read, but now I’m keen to go back to read more and get to know the stories behind some of the characters!
The Oregon Coast provides a stunning backdrop for this mystery. Logan is there on holiday with her family, including her young grandson. There are so many activities for them to enjoy, but getting caught up in a murder is not something any of them planned.
I enjoy how this story revolves around such interesting family dynamics. Logan has a lot of complicated relationships and past trauma that she has to work to keep from impacting her present life. This adds plenty of interest and depth to the story!
For me, this is a five star read! It will appeal to readers who enjoy exploring an interesting destination through the eyes of a protagonist, and who like a mystery that will give them plenty to think about.
Once again, Valerie has done it again! I have not found a book by Valerie that I haven't enjoyed.... especially when it comes to Logan McKenna and her adventures! All Logan wanted to do was enjoy a nice, peaceful and quiet family vacation on the Oregon coast with her boyfriend, daughter, son-in-law and grandson. Everything seemed to be going well with her family vacation and of course something always has to come along. Logan McKenna finds herself being drawn to solve another murder after a captain of an excursion is found murdered! There were so many suspects and then there was one unexpected one... Logan! Can Logan prove her innocence, can she prove that the killer hijacked her phone? This is not how Logan expected her family vacation to go, but then again, it seems like murder and Logan go hand in hand! Pick up a copy of this book and get lost reading about Logan McKenna and her murder solving adventure!
Safe Harbor is Book five in the Logan Mckenna Mystery Series. It is a crime thriller packed with action, mystery, intrigue, loss, angst, and drama. Although this book can be read as a standalone, I do recommend reading previous books in the series to get Logan’s backstory. This time around Logan’s life is going well and she feels content. She goes on vacation with her family to the coast of Oregon and they are having a peaceful, much deserved vacation when a murder takes place in the small community. Suddenly Logan is confronted with her past after becoming the prime suspect in a murder investigation. Not only must Logan try to prove her innocence, but she is faced with having to make a difficult decision. This was yet another fantastic book in this series with great characters and an intriguing storyline. The descriptions of the Oregon coast were vivid and made me feel as though I was there with Logan and her family. Looking forward to the next book!
Logan is back for another vacation trip along the Oregon coast for the summer with her family. They have such wonderful times planned with beach walks, campfires, a charter boat rental for a full on fishing trip, and excellent time just relaxing with Ben, and her daughter, son-in-law and grandson. Things are going beautifully, until Logan is drawn in to another murder - this time, she was one of the last to see the victim and is being checked out as a suspect! Will she be able to give the Safe Harbor people need while the killer gets closer?
Another absolutely wonderful read about Logan, her nuances that make her the fantastic character she is, and the way she follows her heart and mind to protect those around her. There are so many details that jump out at me while reading these books that just build a more beautiful picture, and I always feel as though I've learned things after setting one of these novels down.
This is the fifth book in this series which I enjoyed just as much as the previous four books. I highly suggest reading the previous books to help enjoy the characters more. This is a well written story that has characters that are so well developed. I had no issues connecting with them as they bring the story to life. This is an easy, engaging story that kept me turning pages to the end. It has twists and turns that keep you wanting to know what will happen next. Logan makes a great character and always finds herself in the middle of something. In this story she finds herself in the middle of two murders. Things turn and safe harbor is needed but will they all find it? Will someone be left out? I really enjoyed this book and the characters made this story for me. I highly recommend this book and this author.
Valerie Davisson is quickly becoming a new favorite author of mine. Her Logan McKenna Series is full of mystery, drama, intrigue, and so many twists and turns. The fifth book in the series, Safe Harbor, checks all those boxes and more. The reader finds out more about Logan’s family and her past, which collides with her present day and her connection to a murder, as a suspect. The world building in this series, and especially this book, is amazing! I felt like I was right there beside the family, fishing off the Oregon coast or walking along the beach. Valerie Davisson provides such vivid details in her writing and has also created characters that the reader can't help but connect with. I feel like Logan McKenna could be a friend of mine in real life. The characters are so realistically flawed and believable. I can't wait to see where the next Logan McKenna Thriller takes me!
What another incredible story to this series. I like the aspect that every book Logan some type of problem that she needs to solve, and she doesn’t stop till she gets the answers. Every book has some type of crime involved in it. Once again Logan finds herself trying to solve a crime and seems to get her into trouble. It was filled with suspense, crime, murder, twists and turns that kept me in the edge of me seat again. it was hard to really out this one down. I think out of the books I have read this one was my favorite even thou they are all different in their own ways. The plot of this book really kept you wanting to know what was going to happen next. The character development was great, and we got to look into Logans life a little bit more. The visualization this book created for the settings made me feel like i was right there with them in the story. Highly recommend this book.
Safe Harbor is Book 5 in the Logan McKenna Series and I am really enjoying this series as I read each book, I have to admit so far this is my favorite. I love that the author gives a read who loves crime thrillers, like myself, twists and turns with drama and suspense that had me until the end. Already looking forward to reading the next book.....I highly recommend reading this series. It is very good!
Logan is finally able to take a well deserved time away vacations with her family and what happens when trying to enjoy time away..... not only one death but two!! Trying to figure out who is responsible, Logan also has to prove her innocence along the way. Will Logan be able to figure out this murder puzzle and prove she is not guilty of the crimes? Definitely read and find out!!
Logan hasn’t been in a holiday in a long time and heading to Oregon with Ben is just what they need.
Logan and Ben seem to be having a good time and life seems “ normal “ but death seems to find Logan wherever she is , she’s like a magnet for it 🙈 this time she’s not only trying to investigate the homicide but now she’s a suspect 🤷♀️🙈
The worst things about our past is sometimes we have to face it and Logan finds herself in a predicament , a decision has to be made but it’ll effect not only her but others as well …..
I was lucky enough to have read the previous books but for those that haven’t , it’s written so well that you don’t feel lost but as I said I read them all so I say go for it 🥰📚
Again , I enjoyed every page and again I’m looking forward to the next instalment, what can I say if you’re good then you’re good 😉
Safe Harbor is the fifth instalment in The Logan McKenna Series by Valerie Davisson. But then on a well-earned vacation with her family, Logan finds herself a suspect in a murder investigation- and things begin to get complicated as she will need to deal with her past as well as make a crucial decision that will impact her life. Safe Harbor: A Logan McKenna Mystery Book 5 (The Logan McKenna Series) by Valerie Davisson. This one might be my favorite as of right now. I recommend reading this entire series and I found it better to do so in order. The author has created a story world I love getting lost in. Sometimes with a series that goes for a while it can slow down a bit but I don’t feel that’s the case with these books. Each one pulled me in and kept me guessing and this one was no different in that aspect. The storyline kept me turning the pages as fast as possible to see what would happen next. I just never know what to expect other than an amazing story. It’s well written and paced nicely never feeling rushed or lacking anything. Four stars and highly recommended!
