"Volám sa Mirjana. Viac než 35 rokov sa mi zjavuje Panna Mária. Nemôžem to povedať otvorenejšie.
I write this unusually long and personal review in hopes that this will be a blessing to others like it was to me. Most of my life I hoped that there was a God, but I wasn’t sure if there was one or not. Faith did not come easy to me despite the effort of going to church weekly, doing bible studies and going on retreats. Not that I was making constant effort or praying all the time, but I did make some effort. As people on Goodreads can appreciate, the way to faith for me came from a book. When I was 36 I picked up a book called Medjugorje the Message. Medjugorje is in the former communist Yugoslavia. What made me believe the kids that claimed that they were seeing apparitions of the Virgin Mary is because I had been to Russia in 1979 and knew in just a short period of time there what it was like in a communist country. In Russia, a group of us got lost and needed help back to our hotel. A woman helped us to find the right bus. When passing her new apartment that she was very proud of, we asked if we could see it. She agreed reluctantly, but indicated that we needed to be quiet and not say anything while we were on the stairs to her apartment. We found out later that the Russians are not suppose to let outsiders into their homes. When we got inside, her mother went silently hysterical when she saw us. She was clearly very afraid. Later the woman came with us back to our hotel. A couple in our group wanted to give her jeans, which was a black market item that would earn plenty of money for her. She pointed to the soldiers or police that were outside the hotel with rifles (which was typical most places) and she said that if they saw her take them, they would take her away in a “bus”. So we had to give them to her in a dark alley, which was pretty scary. There were many other things that happened as well, which made us all very aware of the freedoms that we have in this country that many others do not have. I read how these kids in Medjugorje were treated by the communists to get them to deny these apparitions – threatening to revoke their parent’s work visas, taking one of them out of a good school and putting her in the worst one, temporarily putting them in a mental ward and a morgue, etc. Because of my experience in Russia, I believed them. About 12 years ago, I went to Medjugorje in Bosnia (after the Bosnian War in the 90s, it was no longer communist). It was the most holy place I could imagine. Six masses in different languages every day. Confessions by dozens of priests in various languages. People going up and down the mountain praying together. This book is written by one of the visionaries, who is now 50 years old. It is very inspiring.
I was hesitant to read it but I just loved hearing this story through Mirjana's viewpoint. And it inspires me to start fasting again and focus on prayer and confession. If a book can do that it gets a 5 star review for sure. That is the ultimate goal.
Well I gave this one five stars not just because I thought it was fascinating and well written, but because I went to Medjugorje in October and witnessed one of Mirjana's visions of the Virgin Mary. It was an astounding, life-changing experience. So reading her book was very special for me. It is amazing what Mirjana has been through. The book tells about her young life in Bosnia, what she went through with the communist regime because of her visions, as well as how she and her family endured the 1990s war. I recommend it.
Mirjana Soldo was one of six children who saw the Blessed Virgin in the village of Medjugore, former Yugoslavia, starting in 1987. Reports of the apparitions spread like wildfire throughout the small nation, and the Communist government, already weak, feared this spurt of religious fervor would bring them down entirely.
So they sent all their best weapons after the children - state psychiatrists, police, and secret informants. When Mirjana returned to her home city of Sarajevo, she found herself expelled from her school - despite her good grades - and forced to attend a run-down inner city school for juvenile delinquents, many of whom were violent.
The communist government eventually collapsed, only to be replaced by the hideously bloody war that split Yugoslavia in three. Death and darkness were all around, it seemed, and yet in the tiny town of Medjugore, a steady ray of hope hang down.
For Our Lady never stopped coming to Medjugore, no matter what threat they faced. The six could see her, and millions of others came to believe in her presence there though they could not see her. When Mirjana was stuck in Sarajevo, Mary appeared to her there. There was no stopping the Mother of God and her messages. She spoke of darkness at present and darkness to come, but always assured that, with prayer and sacrifice, all would be well.
The Vatican is still in the process of confirming the Medjugore Apparitions, but you will search this book in vain for the faintest hint of heresy. Mirjana's deference to Rome is clear throughout the book, as is that of her fellow visionaries. No new doctrines or concepts are introduced: Mary gives the same message that she gave at Fatima, to turn aside from evil and embrace the Love offered to all of us by her Son. A sinister being in her guise would instruct its listeners to do wrong, or issue doomsday warnings with no hope of mercy.
Anyone still doubting the visions will also have to square that with the personality of our author. If Mirjana and her friends made this story up for attention - which would have been suicidal in a communist nation - they would have to be narcissistic kids with too much time on their hands, a la the Salem Witch trials, and hence they would assign themselves grandeur and great authority in the narrative they created. The humility of Mirjana and her friends cannot be overstated. She tells us many times in the book that she's still a bit bewildered that God chose them for this.
So leave your fears at the door, because Our Mother wishes to comfort you. The twentieth century - and, so far, the twenty-first - have been scary times to live, and there are disasters still to come. But God will save His people, and peace will be restored. As Mary said in the title, "My Heart will triumph."
I urge you to give this book a chance, regardless of your beliefs, if you are at all curious about the march of history and the chaos in the wide world. It will offer you solace, and may explain a lot of what is now unfolding.
On 24 June 1981 two teenagers, Mirjana then aged 16 and Ivanka, aged 14, were walking near their nondescript village of Medjugorje in what we now know as Bosnia & Hercegovina, when Ivanka told her friend she could see an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Unsurprisingly, Mirjana remarked that it was impossible and they went on their way. But the following day they were motivated to return, this time with an entourage comprising Vicka 16, Ivan 16, Marija 16 and Jakov 10. The three-dimensional apparition reappeared and this time they had a conversation with the Virgin. They continue to have apparitions to this day, almost 36 years since they first began. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Over five hundred books have been written about the phenomenon of Medjugorje and countless websites, YouTube videos, documentaries and even films have covered it. Now a book has been published by the visionary Mirjana, assisted by film maker and author Sean Bloomfield and local guide and interpreter Miki Musa. My Heart Will Triumph echoes the words of the Virgin Mary in one of her numerous messages to the world via the visionaries. Despite the joint authorship, the book is really an autobiography of Mirjana Soldo.
Even non-believers will find this book fascinating. It is not only a remarkable story covering the metamorphosis of a very ordinary village of a few hundred to a pilgrimage site which has been host to anything from thirty to fifty million visitors. It’s also the story of a very ordinary teenager from a simple village in the middle of nowhere who, along with five others, has, for over three decades been having regular chats with the Virgin Mary.
Mirjana’s story covers not only her spirituality and her meetings with the Virgin, but her childhood, schooling and early years in a what was then a Communist country, her (and the other visionaries’) persecution by the Communist authorities and those who did not believe them, her experiences during the Bosnian war, her marriage, the loss of a child, her family and much more. She was, and remains, a very ordinary person with an extraordinary story to tell. What comes through her writing is a kind, considerate and loving person who has suffered greatly for simply telling the truth.
Read the book. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry but mostly it will warm your heart. And once you’ve finished it, what you will have difficulty believing is how the phenomenon of Medjugorje could be anything other than what Mirjana says it is.
Mirjana's personal experience as she recounts the events growing up in a war torn communist regime. Mirjana takes us to the top of Apparition Hill and into her innermost experiences/relationship with Our Blessed Mother and understanding of God's Plan. A beautiful and powerful book.
Mirjana Soldo was one of six young people who reported visions of Mary, the mother of Jesus, beginning in 1981. The visions took place in Medjugorje, a farming village in what was then Yugoslavia (and is now located in Bosnia-Herzogovina). The communist authorities detained the children multiple times, imprisoned their pastor for several years, and took various other measures in an attempt to suppress news of these events, none of which worked because millions of people have traveled to the village, which is now an unofficial pilgrimage site for Roman Catholics.
At the time these events began, Soldo was the only one of the six to live outside Medjugorje, spending most of the year in Sarajevo, which was to be ravaged by war in a few years. In this book, Soldo writes about her visions, but also shares quite a bit about her family life, the war years, and how she eventually settled in Medjugorje. I was already familiar with Medjugorje, but this is the first account I have read by one of the six people who have reported these visions for some 35 years now. The story itself is fascinating and inspirational, and it is particularly interesting to get the perspective of someone who was involved from the beginning.
Soldo writes in a clear, simple, direct style. I think this book would be of interest to readers who already know about Medjugorje, but would also be a highly readable introduction to the topic.
Mirjana a beautiful soul gives an account of her life as a visionary. A must read for those who feel God's call and long to be close to him and his mother, our Blessed Mother. I received such valuable insight into Medjougorgie and its beauty. Also of the visionaries and what it's like to be in our Lady's real presence and the realm of heaven. I long to be in heaven with Jesus and Mary, but I know it will take lots of prayers to get me ready as well as everyone here on earth. The world is a mess but the insight in this book helped me realize it's a beautiful mess and we are all a part of a beautiful love story. The love of God will triumph with the help of our Mother who always leads us to her Son. The world will be made new and experience the love of God the Father through Jesus. King and Queen of all hearts; Jesus and Mary! I look forward to the ten secrets and revelation of God to all. Pray I will forever!
Simply a beautiful book. Written with clarity, this book describes the apparitions of the Blessed Mother. When I finished this book, I felt such a feeling of peace, knowing the Blessed Mother is watching each and every one of us. But there is a big lesson here, and that is called Love. If we could all love each other, and turn ourselves to God, it would be a much better world. Miranja doesn't disclose what's in the mysteries that Mary had given her, but there is an undercurrent of what could happen if we don't heed her messages.
In 1981, 16 year-old Miriana and five other youths had an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary on a hill near the village of Medjugorje. This is her account of the 35 years of regular apparitions, her persecution by communist authorities, the graces experienced in her own life and by numerous pilgrims who have traveled to that hill, the message Mary has for all people. Miriana’s is a simple, sometimes repetitive voice, but it conveys an earnest sincerity. I was deeply challenged by this book to increase my life of prayer.
After seeing the movie Apparition Hill, I wanted the whole story of the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary to be true. I found Mirjana Soldo to be inspiring and credible in the documentary, but I wanted to know more. This book by Mirjana and Sean Bloomfield simply and movingly retells her experiences. I await the Catholic Church to make a final decision on the authenticity of all that is happening in Medjugorje with even more hope than I had before after reading this book. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the apparitions of Our Lady.
Though I had heard and read bits and pieces about the Marian apparitions of Medjugori, I had no real knowledge of the story. Mirjana reveals an amazing account of the Blessed Mother's commitment to her children, and the advice and wisdom she imparts on our behalf. I believe my personal relationship grew deeper as I turned each page. Thank you Mirjana for making your story public...this book has made a difference in my life!
My Heart Will Triumph By Mirjana Soldo,Sean Bloomfield,Miljenko Musa
This is truly an amazing read! I must say, that it is not only inspirational but thought provoking as well. Historically, it portrays the struggle many of the people were facing during the war.
This book is about love, hope and peace. The primary message of this book is that God loves all of us and if we focus on love and place our trust in God, everything will be all right. Actually, it will be more than all right, it will be great. This book came at a great time for me to read.
It was a brilliant book for anyone, not just Catholics. It is a true account of the author who sees The Blessed Mother. If you open your heart there are many blessings between these pages.
10 stars if I could! This is an outstanding autobio of one of the visionaries of the Marian apparitions of Medugorje which sheds an abundance of light on the entire phenomenon. I've been convinced of the authenticity of these apparitions for some time now, and this book just solidifies my beliefs even further.
A shy girl in her mid-teens after seeing the Blessed Mother was deeply persecuted by communist police and authorities for years who never wavered in her faith in even the minutest. We're talking almost daily brutal interrogations, being sworn at, threatened to be shot, family threatened, not allowed in her school, priest imprisoned with 3 years of hard labor-the brutality of communism trying to snuff out religious faith, yet they couldn't do it. Mirjana has had more than one policeman visit her years later in total regret, repentance and apologies, likely fearing for their souls.
I was surprised the persecutions were as bad as they were, much worse than the many psychological and medical tests all 6 of the visionaries underwent to insure it wasn't just a hoax. There was much more to the persecutions than unbelief-the communist state feeling threatened despite the fact she never spoke against the government, yet was regarded by them as an enemy.
Mirjana is humble and genuine in the extremest. Over and over she says what a normal, every day common person she is, and nobody should be paying her any special attentions, but focus on God and Mary. Her non-judgmentalism and forgiveness, even towards her heaviest persecutors not only is more evidence of the genuineness of her apparitions, but very inspiring.
In addition to the early years of civil authority persecution, she's also had many sufferings including a miscarriage and all out war in her home city where her Dad and brother nearly starved to death.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to know what really is going on in Medugorje, but more importantly, for anyone-and I mean anyone-Catholic or not, Christian or not, religious or not, who wants to meet your heavenly Mother!
Mirjana's story is very believable and inspirational, also very easy to read. There is much holy advice in this book. I am subtracting one star because I have to be honest and say, that while it seems very honest, and I can't imagine how she could be telling anything other than the truth, and is definitely saying things we should follow (pray for peace, pray for those who do not know God, love everyone, go to Mass, read the Bible, etc.)...I can not yet wrap my heart around everything. Probably due to my Protestant upbringing (I am a Catholic now), I am cautious about putting too much emphasis on Mary, although I do believe she takes our prayers to her Son and that we should honor and love her! I am afraid of going too far in working on a relationship with the Mother instead of her Son. This is just my personal opinion and I mean no disrespect to anyone! I am glad I read this and there is much to take from this book and much to ponder! Thank you to my dear friend, Cathie who sent me a copy of this book. I loved this book as a reading selection during Lent.
I've been skeptical about the apparitions at Medjorge. While I will save my final judgement to concur with the pope, I will say that there is nothing in this book that seems contrary to what we know of other Marian apparitions. According to the book, Our Lady spreads a message of Christ's love, always bowing to the superiority of her Son over herself. It's a well-written book, which moves along quickly, with the exception of the last few chapters, which became a bit scattered and repetitive. Overall, the message of love is overwhelmingly clear and heart-changing.
Moving account of one of the Medjugorie visionaries on the visits of the Blessed Mother. This has been occurring for over 20 years and the Blessed Mother has given the visionaries 10 secrets to be shared at the appropriate time. Her description of Mary an the visits are truly beautiful.
I'm glad I read this book and took my time to absorb the story and the lessons. It kept my interest throughout the book. Often times, I felt awestruck.
I wanna visit Medjugorje now! I love how Our Lady's message is consistently that of A) loving Jesus B) loving our neighbor C) trusting in the Father's plan for our life and the world
