An anthology of some of the scariest short stories from the nineteenth century, featuring a mix of British, French, and American short story writers. The stories range from tales of the supernatural to more explicitly horrific subjects. The book brings in the chills almost immediately by starting off with Mary Cholmondely’s “Let Loose”. When an evil person dies, does evil itself die? Samuel Savage’s “The Cat” is about a cat that might not really be a cat, as its fifteen-year old narrator is left to solve the mystery. Some of the scariest stories are those without a supernatural element. They prove that reality can be just as horrifying, or even more than fiction, as written by W.C. Morrow in one of my favorite stories from the collection. There are some stories by unknown writers as well, and it is commendable how Stocks dug them up for readers. I love anthologies because short stories have much lesser time and space to get to the point, unlike novels. It’s a hit or miss within a few pages. Give this one a go if you like the chill factor in reading and appreciate classic literature. There are also numerous sketches that accompany the writing throughout the book.

The short stories were not scary enough. The only horror story I found was in the third short story when the characters faced the invisible creature, which I still didn't know what it was.

الكتاب مكون من ٦ قصص، كل قصة مرعبة بطريقتها الخاصة، لكن الأكثر رعبًا وذكاءًا في الحبكة كانت قصة "انتقام أصيل" وقصة "رصاصة فضية واحدة"

فكرة قصة "القطة" جيدة في البداية، لكن مع النهاية صارت طفولية ومباشرة أكثر من اللازم.

كتاب لطيف ظريف، واختيار مثالي للهالوين 🖤🧡

This is a collection of stories for younger readers rewritten by Mike Stocks. It's unclear why they were rewritten, perhaps due to outdated language as many of the stories still contain fairly graphic elements. The stories as a whole are good, though without comparing the versions I can't say how much of that is down to the original authors and how much is down to Stocks.

One complaint is that the book doesn't list the references for the originals, just a list of authors whose work was adapted with no attribution to specific stories. I've done some research and I've found out where the originals come from:

"Let Loose" is a re-telling of 'The Hand' (1883) by Guy de Maupassant & 'Let Loose' (1890) by Mary Cholmondeley
"The Cat" is a re-telling of a story by Samuel Savage
"The Beast From Nowhere" is a re-telling of 'What Was It?' (1859) by Fitz-James O'Brien
"An Original Revenge" is a re-telling of a story by W. C. Morrow
"One Silver Bullet" is a re-telling of a story by an unknown British author
"The Head of Jean Cabet" is a re-telling of a story by an unknown French author

It was a good read with some charming but sometimes amateur illustrations but the stories that were chosen are all quite creepy even though some of them read as morality plays, but that was typical of a lot of stories from that time period.

A re-read of a book I had as a child that I spotted in the library booksale for 20p. I had to pick it up as I remembered reading these stories over and over, along with the Ghost Stories version in the series.

The tales were good and each with a twist, written quite well and not overly simplified. I have to give credit to the illustrations which were great and really added to the stories.

I enjoyed revisiting these.

A companion to the anthology of ghost stories and equally entertaining. More familiar tales of Victorian horror, and again, hopefully a decent introduction to the real thing. This is the type of book I would have devoured as a child before moving on to the much missed Fontana collections of the actual stories. Happy days....

Not scary and rather clicheic: vampires, bloody hand moving around, etc. Perhaps the reason is the target audience that is young readers but the author still could use some more imagination and add something more original. It is hard to compete with Stoker, Lovecraft, Poe, and King. But easy to read and with bits of classical Victorian scenes.

يقدم مايك ستوكس في هذا الكتاب مجموعة مختارة من قصص الرعب التي كانت تستهوي القراء في العصر الفيكتوري، حين كانت الأشباح والظواهر الغامضة جزءًا من الهواجس اليومية. القصص تتنوع بين الغموض والتشويق، بين الرهبة النفسية والخوف الكامن في التفاصيل الصغيرة، تلك التي تجعل القلب يخفق ولوهلة قبل أن يدرك العقل حقيقة ما يقرأه.

هذا الكتاب تجربة ساحرة لمحبي أدب الرعب الكلاسيكي، رحلة عبر الأزمنة، إلى حيث كانت الخرافات والأساطير تحيا في وجدان الناس كحقائق لا تقبل الجدل.

الترجمة، كانت موفقة في التقاط روح العصر الفيكتوري، إذ حافظت على الأسلوب الكلاسيكي في السرد، ونقلت الصور القاتمة والرهيبة دون أن تفقد النصوص سحرها الأصلي.

إنه كتاب يُقرأ على ضوء خافت، في ليلة باردة، حيث السكون ليس سوى ستار لما قد يتحرك في العتمة.

رواية قصص الرعب الفيكتورية حلوة وتجنن بمعنى الكلمة! كل القصص فيها ممتعة ومخيفة بطريقة تشدّ، وكل وحدة لها طابعها الخاص. أكثر قصة عجبتني كانت قصة القطر الأسود، كانت غريبة ومخيفة بطريقة تخليك تكمّلها بدون توقف. بصراحة الرواية كلها تجنن وأنصح أي أحد يحب الرعب يقرأها 👻📖

Lai gan esmu par daudz redzējusi Supernatural un bērnībā tādus stāstus lasījusi, tie tomēr bija interesanti. Ir stāsti, kas mani joprojām vajā kopš bērnības, tādi stāsti, kas dažreiz liek naktīs baidīties no ēnām uz sienas vai rokām, kas varētu tikt cauri istabas grīdai. Šajā grāmatā varbūt bija nedaudz satraucoši stāsti, bet ļoti apšaubu, ka kāds no tiem man kādreiz traucēs gulēt. Aizraujoši, bet ne biedējoši.
