Rhody Jones

The first mate of the schooner, Vivienne, walked from the docks into the streets of New Orleans. He’d been dismissed by the captain after the ship had barely survived the incredible battering from a powerful hurricane. He could have signed on to another ship returning to New England, but he wanted to try something different. He wanted to make a land voyage across the Southwestern United States to California and then maybe take a ship out of San Francisco. It would be another five years before he started that long ride to California, but he never made it out of Texas when he crossed over a shallow hill and witnessed the aftermath of a Comanche raid on a small ranch.

Most biographies start with birth and then roll through the years as they drift by but that would bore me to death, and I lived through it.

The interesting part of my life began on September 23rd, 1995 as we were driving back to Omaha after watching the Notre Dame - Texas game in South Bend with relatives. The #21 Irish beat the #13 ranked Longhorns 55-27; and in a real oddity, scored points in just about every way conceivable in the game of football. They scored touchdowns on passes and runs, kicked a field goal, intercepted a pass for a TD, returned a punt for a touchdown and even added two points for blocking a Texas extra point.

As we were driving along westbound I-80 somewhere in Illinois in our Jeep Cherokee, I absent-mindedly rubbed the left side of my neck under my chin.

My very astute wife asked, "What's wrong with your neck?"

Now I had been an Air Force medic for twelve years; and as evident in my descriptions of outlaws' agonizing deaths in my stories, have a good working knowledge of anatomy and physiology. But that knowledge is offset by being a guy and thinking that we all live forever. My neck lymph nodes had been enlarged for around three months when my wife asked that question.

I obfuscated as if I was a lawyer and replied, "Um, a few weeks or so." (Note: Twelve or thirteen weeks does qualify as a 'few' weeks if one chooses to be generous.)

"And what did the doctor say?"

"I'll ask him when we get back."

"Yes, you will."

I do not want to make my wife out to be a harpy or a nag, because she is neither. She's an incredibly patient woman who could only put up with so much stupidity by yours truly.

Three days later, after the doctor copped a quick feel of my lymph nodes, he said, "I don't know what it is, but I don't like it," which was an honest, albeit an imprecise diagnosis.

So, we trotted over to a local ENT specialist. She didn't like them either and took me into surgery a few days later where she yanked one out, so the lab could dice it and slice it, then look at it under a microscope.

The pathologist who looked at the cells through his microscope reported his findings as 'lymphoepithelioma'. That meant that it was a secondary tumor and there was a primary tumor somewhere else in my nasopharynx that was the original problem.

Back I went into the operating room where the ENT doctor did an extensive examination and found nothing. She was so sure of her reconnaissance of the back of my throat that she told me that the pathologist was wrong, and it was just a lymphoma.

Now, being a computer geek, even way back in the dark ages of the internet in '95, I did some searching and found that if the primary tumor wasn't found, then the survival rate plummeted to about a fifth of the already lousy survival rate for the advanced Stage IV cancer. My wife and I decided that a second opinion might be a good idea.

Off we went in her Jeep to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota as the lousy weather descended across the Midwest. It's been known to happen, you know.

They had a problem getting the doctor here to release the specimen she'd yanked out of my neck, which I thought was odd because I don't remember selling it and figured I still owned it. Anyway, they eventually got the lymph node, did their own peek and confirmed the pathologist's diagnosis.

It wasn't until Halloween in 1995 that they finally found the original little bugger. It was just a tiny bump in the back of my throat that must have been there for a long time before it sent its friends marching into my lymph nodes.

They wanted to treat the cancer there, but I opted to have it done in Omaha and was sent to the care of Doctor Patrick J. McKenna (a name you may recognize from Max). Doctor Mac was the perfect man for the job as he was very personable, optimistic, had a good sense of humor and wouldn't put up with my constant whining. It helped that he knew his job, too.

Been a long time follower of Mr. Petit, and all of his stories are outstanding, but this one creates a whole new level of outstanding entertaining revelations of how our Country became a reality. Brody is definitely a force to be reckoned with!

Just another walk in the park for Mr. Petit, but definitely another five star masterpiece of how a "Yankee Doodle Dandy" helped tame another western uprising. A young man, the son of a shipping tycoon, leaves his life of luxury to become a conductive exciting years. Tiring poetically routine of cowboying, he decided to explore the rest of the old American West. During that time he finds himself encountering savage Indians, who captured a young woman and a small female, after killing their respective families! Quiet an ordeal, but the excitement continues as their troubles only increases throughout their extended travels! Cannot divulge any other details without giving away some interesting, and exciting, escapades!
Superb storylines throughout this compelling western masterpiece, and the Author's outstanding character selections were absolutely perfectly descriptive of their respective roles. A lots of suspenseful moments, and definitely a little romancing thrown in throughout this compelling masterpiece.
Definitely recommend this outstanding story of old American western folklore adventures to all readers, even you non-western enthusiasts will find this compelling "trail of tears," to your liking. I am reader of many different stories, but stories of this magnitude certainly appease my inner most feelings. You are definitely the loser, If You fail to follow Rhody, and crew, throughout their many outstanding adventures!!!😄

SEAMAN, COWBOYS, HOSTILE INDIANS, SURVIVORS

C. J. Petit has amazed again with this exciting 5 STARS "Rhody Jones" a western I highly recommend. CJP has come through finally with the editing and this book was a pleasure & absolute joy to read for the sensational storyline & almost perfect editing. ( It might be perfect.) This is an old west era drama about a seafaring man who decided to stay in Texas & learn how to be a cowboy & western living; he grew up in RI as an orphan who lived with his Uncle. The 2 of them were the only family & Rhody grew up sailing on ships. He came across an Indian raided farm and the adventure begins that will hold your attention; it held mine & I could not put it down or sleep until I finished reading this interesting intelligent loving emotional book. Great characters, details of gun battles are amazing for example down to where the horse was shot on the body & then how it then fell or jerked causing the rider all kinds of problems, described in detail. Shoot -em- up action besides some sneaky attention from the Indians after they said they were free to go. Exciting & surprising happenings towards the end. A must read if you are a CJP FAN, love Westerns, or just love a good drama with romance regardless of era that isn't heavy on the sex but on the action drama.

Rhody grew up in a maritime family and was sailing at an early age. He was the first mate on the schooner Vivienne during a hurricane while the captain was drunk below decks. Arriving safely ashore, Rhody was fired. He was in Texas and decided to try being a cowboy. He worked on cattle drives for five years and then set off to travel to California. Enroute across Texas he rescues survivors of a Comanche attack where two families had been killed. Rhody rescued the children, Willie and Marty from one ranch and Emma the only survivor in the second family. They traveled together and encountered vigilanti indians along the way. Rhody sent Emma and the children ahead while he faced an Indian attack. He was eventually successful and was reunited with them. Emma, Willie and Marty were returned to family in a small town in Texas. Rhody traveled to Rhode Island for his uncle's wedding. He realized that he wanted to return to Texas for his "family." The romance between Emma and Rhody was gentle and they traveled across the country by train with the two children.
CJP's stories are filled with detail and with great character development. I look forward to each of his books as they always page turners with action and romance. Mr. Petit is an extraordinary story teller.

He was raised at sea and decided to see some of the hares conditions for found Texas a great start for working through the old west

Excellent characters, plenty of action, Texas danger on every side as renegade Indians attack ranches, slaughter the owners, burn the buildings, and steal horses, food, and guns. Rody was drawn by the smoke to the first ranch, found a young boy who had escaped, killed the four Indians who had brutally carved up the family and were looting the place, and quickly set off after the larger band which had continued on to raid the neighboring ranch. He was just in time to see a beautiful young woman captured and hauled away, along with the young blond-haired girl. An excellent tale of resourcefulness and initiative as he rescues both captives and stands off several Indian attacks, designed to have the two returned. Plenty of twists in this West Texas setting of violence on the prairie, Indian fights, and small western towns. Well worth the time.

Rhody Jones

Rhody Jones was a very lucky boy, he grew up with an uncle who loved him unconditionally, taught him how to make good choices in his life, and to go after the things he wanted to do with his life. So it was surprise, that when he wanted to see the West that he would make a plan and see where it took him. He went from seaman to cowboy and liked the change, especially his Morgan horses. However, nobody can plan for what Fate may lay before you . Sometimes you just have to do the best you can with what you have to work with. 👏BRAVO 👏BRAVO 👏👏 I love to read a book from this author and I own most of his books that he has written. You just cannot go wrong when you spend time reading one of his stories. There is so much detail and pieces of true history that is not predominately known from this time. He's a winner, every time!!!!

A CJP. Rhode Island/Texas Western Action Adventure (RJ)

CJP. has penned a Rhode Island/Texas western action adventure titled, "Rhody Jones", which begins with a young man trying to save a sinking ship with no help from the drunken Captain. The first sentence should tell the reader that this is a very unusual CJP. read. There are two plots that eventually merge one being the place where he was born and what he accomplished as A First Mate on a sailing ship. The second is his experiences on a different moving contraption. A horse. He wants to travel the west from Texas to the railheads in Kansas and then from Eastern Texas to California. His trip is interrupted by Comanche raiders and he saves a young woman and two children. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS

A good story, the harshness and stark reality of the dry Southwest and the water of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of little Rhode Island draw an interesting backdrop.

A chance meeting on the plains of Texas, a rescue of a young wife and two children whose families had been murdered by a band of savage Indians start this story off in with swiftness that gets your attention in a hurry.
Rhody Jones is a drover of cattle transplanted from the docks of Rhode Island to the dry, rolling grasslands of the untamed Western Frontier. A chance rescue of Emma and the two children from their Indian captors sets each of them on a path of having to trust each other and finally to care for each other in this rousing tale of the untamed West.
Another good story by C J Petit.

When more is not betterhave

This is a typical CJP story with the expected plot, characters, resolution and love interest. This is also a five star story dropped to four because of inexplicably hurried story arcs that did nothing to tighten the story or advance the plot. Everything dealing with Emma's brother in law, the suspicious hurried marriage of Rhodys uncle and the convoluted, unbelievable attempts on Rhodys life could/should have been shredded...a shorter story for sure but a better story, five star worthy, in the end. Keep writing them CJP...not perfect but oh so entertaining.

I'd give this book an A for story and a C- for editing. The plot is well-crafted, full of action and intrigue but the text is full of syntax errors, missing words, and extra words, and in at least one case the name of one of the characters is changed and then changed back! I ended up scanning rather than reading because my thoughts would be continually disrupted when I had to stop and figure out what was intended rather than what was actually printed.

Would I recommend this author--unqualified yes. He's a great storyteller and I gave him four stars because I think that is the crux of a good story. I couldn't give five because of the numerous editing problems.

Simple and easy-going.

This was an easy-going read with some degree of excitement, a bit more low-key mystery, and a ton of details. The excitement existed within the shootouts and rescue, which were a small portion of the whole. The mysteries included the motivation and identity of an assassin at one point but mainly on uncharted memories and feelings between Rhody and Emma. The details are what filled the story the most, generally going from what kind of horse, that or gun was used, to every action performed in the process of walking or moving. It was a simple story of a seemingly simpler and grittier era. I liked it

Misleading

Bought this as a sea adventure and was very surprised when the prime character abandoned the sea early on and turned into a cowboy complete with horse gun and cattle. Then he turned Indian fighter and the whole book then morphed into a romance with lots of passionate sighs and desperate feelings and fears of rejection. Finally we have the happy ending with loads of money and sunshine happiness stretching into the future perfect life. Not for me at if I wanted a romance (which I don't) I would have chosen one, sorry.

Air Force and Geography

I admire and appreciate your writing and I think I’ve read them all to date. I too am retired from the USAF and went on to become a geographer. One quick note, the Sun will always rise in the Southeast in the northern hemisphere. I’ve got a couple of books written in my head. One a novel version of my move from NH to Wyoming as an eight year old. I’ve been to 47 of the 50 states with only the Dakotas and Hawaii to go. Keep writing these great books and I’ll keep reading. Aim high!!!!

Two Worlds

Another great adventurous story by CJ Petit. Could not put down my Kindle. Read story in less than a day. It was great to read about an honest and brave man who came to the rescue of two children and a young lady from the Comanches. It seems he arrives to rescue them from harm. He came from wealth of Rhode Island but loved the past five years in Texas and Kansas as a cowboy.
Please Mr Petit continue writing, I enjoy your stories and bought all your books.

Texas cowboy

This story was not about a cowboy. He was sailor from the East coast.
Rhody was going West to see California. He went to Texas and became a cowhand. Now he was going West. Only then he ran into the Indians raiding a farm. He rescued a boy. The he had to rescue the boy's sister and a woman from the Indians that had killed there families. The story was about to change.

Ocean faring, cattle driving, Indian fighting, Western romance of rescue, love, survival.

The story appeals to me. A young man in his 20's working on a 2nd class ship and surviving an ocean hurricane. He goes on a cattle drive, then travels as an adventure to the West, saving lives from Commaches, falling in love, adopting a family. Really solid story of a good man in his adventurous travels.

I have read about ten of Petit books. Enjoy the detail, balance of mystery and romance, and the violence less than some writers. His stories make since! So far Roho is my favorite, this story could just go on and on. Surprise at ending in Warwick, RI. As newly weds that was our first home, my husband was Navy, on the USS Essex. (1966-1969). Thanks for pulling my out of my Zane Grey rut!

One of the Best 4 Westerns out of 100 that I have read

It starts out on the ocean... I was a little disappointed of the first few pages.... however, in a few chapters it started getting into the western genre. I was spell bound until the very end of the book. Rhody rescued Emma and fought Comanches.
This is unending action!!! Looking for part two of these folks ... Rhody will need to have to go back to Texas. Please hurry and write more! Thank you for this wonderful read!!!

Romance and action, western style

I find I'm really enjoying the books by C.J. Petit. I like books that have a historical base. This one was of particular interest as it deals with parts of TX I'm familiar with. My issue with saying that is that San Antonio, Fredericksburg, etc aren't exactly West TX as they are referred to in this book. Great story though. Again, Mr. Petit did seem to forget the names he'd given the characters in a few places. Great story though!

Another C J Petit wonderful book.

Who would think a sailor from Rhode Island and a west Texas lady captured by an indian raiding party would ever meet, but they did. Rhody not only rescued Emma, but also 11 year old Willie and 7 year old Marty (Marta). They experienced many exciting and horrifying events until everyone was safe. Then a bigger problem occurred when they would be separated by life and circumstances.

Ships Ahoy until you become a cowboy!

From ship sailing to riding a horse. Rowdy is ahead in the use of ropes but has to learn horses and cattle. Then he moves on and has to deal with several Comanches. He finds a survivor, a young boy named Willie, and then rescues Emma and a young girl, Marty, from the Indians that mutilated their families and burned their ranches. He owns half a shipping company with his uncle. Lots of action and cowboy fun!

I Simply just Love these Stories!

These stories are so hard to put down. I'm always surprised how fast I read them and sad then the book ends. I find myself wanting to keep going. I love the epiIogs that Petit adds. He gives the reader an idea of how the characters lives proceed through the years. It creates a nice ending to the story.

I can't wait to get back to the Evans Series!

Another wonderful novel by C.J Petit

This novel RHODY JONES is very enjoyable reading the fourth time as it was the first time. The storyline is the same in all of Mr. Petit's 95 wonderful books (The hero of the story does whatever needs to be done to be with their true love while taking care of the Bad Guys. The Hero's all do different occupations which also makes it more interesting. All of Mr Petit's novels definitely rate 5*s +.

Even though I've been enjoying the Evans family saga, stand-alone was an enjoyable read. Rhody Jones starts out aboard a ship in the gulf of Mexico fighting a hurricane, then ends up in Kansas on a cattle drive, heads to Texas where he finds the love of his life. Plenty of fights with Comanche's an assassin's too.

Couldnt put it down

I enjoy all the CJ Petit books and they just get better and more enjoyable to read as he releases a new one. If you like easy westerns you will love these but he is adventuring slighly away from solid western to a mixture as in this book. Loved reading all of them.

I personally like C.J. Petit's book, and this was one of his best. It is a story of an New Englander who has been a sailor for years but leaves the sea so that he can travel via Texas to California. During his trip, he encounters renegade Indians, rescues a woman and two children, encounters an assassin, and returns to Rhode Island.

The Rhody Jones character epitomises the best traits a man can possibly have, This story is filled with action, love, adventure and compassion. What a thrill I had reading it from the first page to the last. I shed real tears a few times during the reading of this epic novel. It is a heart warming and satisfying story that I will read again.

New England sailor to Texas cowboy!

Great story, well done. Have traveled many of the places in this book. I was reading a horribly written western by another author. Had to find another Petit novel to wash my mind out. This one did the trick. Thanks for your accuracy, your ability to spin a love story and not get smutty. I truly enjoy my time with your characters.

Kept me up wanting to get to the next segment

I have read several doCKs books and always love the gentlemanly behavior of the heros.I see this one came out in March and now. I've finished in May. I found the errors in writing and name changes distracting.i.e. Lilly to Libby, what how about a proof reader...
