Werewolves and wildfires surround the town. Who will survive when Conquest burns? Tensions are running high in the small mountain town of Conquest, Idaho. Newly elected Sheriff Heather Hill is on one side, corrupt Mayor JH Bieter on the other, a standoff in a culture war. With a wildfire approaching, battle lines begin to form. As the cold war heats up, Heather and JH are at each other's throats. But they have more to worry about than the fire. The Pack has arrived in Conquest. A ravenous gang of bestial shapeshifters, they are hungry and eager to show their dominance. Conquest makes a perfect target. Now Heather, JH, and the people of Conquest must fight for survival as blood and ash fill the streets.
Robbie Dorman believes in horror. Conquest is his first novel. When not writing, he's podcasting, playing video games, or petting cats. He lives in Texas with his wife, Kim.
Well, well, well…two days in a row…two books by Robbie Dorman…two 5-star ratings. That’s extremely rare for me, but is always a wonderful thing. Now this was absolutely one of the very best werewolf books that I’ve come across to date. A really great plot, including many facets, ranging from political corruption, natural disasters, werewolf bikers, sexism, nepotism, a love story, and a whole host of other plot points. And goddamnit, the author made it all work in a perfectly balanced, smooth, and very enjoyable way. Each character was engaging, the pacing was perfect, and the horror elements were also done beautifully, too. Heather was, by far, the standout character for me, and she was a genuine bad ass throughout. But even the ones you hated, like Jack and JH, made you want to see more of them. I hate gushing about books and authors, but once in awhile, it’s just the right thing to do. If you haven’t read Robbie Dorman yet, as an author, reviewer, and horror fanatic, I command you all to do so. And don’t worry…you’ll thank me later. ;)
This book is chock full of action and some bloody good horror.
Imagine a wildfire threatening your town. It’s approaching fast and it’s time to get out. But, a group of strangers aren’t having any of it, They see the fire as an opportunity to unleash their inner beast. To rend, tear and feed. They’re shapeshifters with long sharp claws and very big teeth.
As with most horror stories, there’s the character’s you want to survive, those that you really hope don’t and the ones doing all the deciding. It all adds fuel to the fire as the flames approach and each has to decide what side they’re on. It sure made for a super fast and wild read.
This would be such fun as a movie and I had a blast. I’ll definitely be watching for more from the author.
I received a complimentary copy. My review is voluntarily given.
This book is a fun ride! I love how different the werewolves are from what I normally read. There are characters to root for and ones to hope get what they have coming. Highly recommend if you love creature horror!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
A motorcycle gang are getting restless. The fact that they just happen to be werewolves adds to the chaos. They usually don't linger around towns but the town of Conquest becomes a problem. I love that this is a different storyline found in most werewolf books. There are lots of characters with lots of sideline stories which all come together in the end. With lots of fighting and brutal killings, this book kept me reading on and on wondering if the town of Conquest could survive.
I want to see this book turned into a movie. The story was a fun read. Small town threatened by a fire and something more on a holiday weekend. It is a up all night page turner, you will not be disappointed.
"Conquest" isn't your typical werewolf book. In fact, the creatures are "shapeshifters", rather than "werewolves". They're huge, lumpy, misshapen, malformed beasts. They maintain their human minds during the change, and can even speak a bit in their shapeshifted forms.
But the story is great. The characters are well-crafted, and the villains get their comupuance. A LOT of people that I wanted to live didn't. But - luckily - the three whom I most wanted to live did.
The book could have used some more edits before it went to publication. I almost gave it a lesser rating due to that. But I enjoyed the book so much that I overlooked the editing errors, and just got on with the business of reading.
The ending of this book leaves things wide open for a sequel. I hope that Robbie Dorman writes that next book - because I want more "Conquest"!
(I came back and gave this 4 stars after thinking about it longer. It is 4 stars when grading on a 'creature book' curve. Below is my original review.)
I really want to give this 4 stars but I just can't pull the trigger.
I enjoyed the heck out of this book. I got what I was hoping for, which was a straightforward werewolf action book. There are no major plot twists, everybody gets what is coming to them and it doesn't really break any new ground but it is a book that is heads-down and no frills. I didn't have to devote a lot of time trying to keep track of too many characters and it doesn't ask you to deep-think or overanalyze anything. This is a meat-and-potatoes werewolf book. And that is probably why I can't pull the trigger on that 4th star.
If you like werewolves, pick this up. If I can find anything else at my library by this author in the same vein as this book, I will definitely give it a shot.
What a great book! I am a huge fan of the werewolf genre, and any fan knows how hard it has been to find werewolf books that's not some type of twisted sexual fantasy crap. When I came across this book I knew I had to give it a read. It is excellent! The characters are well described and believable, and the werewolves themselves are also wonderfully written. My only complaint is a small one. How did Jack know the sheriff's scent? It never explains that, leaving it up to the readers imagination. Was he in on her attack as a child? Anyway, I give it 5 stars, even with my 1 gripe, the story is a great one, and deserves nothing less.
I liked the storyline and think it would make a good movie. What I didn’t like is the way every male character is portrayed. It’s one thing that one or two male characters oppress women and it would have fit but every single male character? Every female character is an angel that has been/is being abused in some way by a male. It is ridiculous and gets old fast after the first 10 - 15 male characters. In this book, Baby Jesus could come down from the sky and save all mankind and still be oppressing women in some way. Then to top it off, only males are werewolves because only men are evil of course. Great storyline and would make a great movie if rewritten.
This is my fourth Robbie Dorman and I keep loving them more and more. Something about his writing is a breeze to read and I devour them quickly. His characters are relatable and the action is spaced out perfectly. The chapters are short and propulsive and I always want to know what’s next. This was his first and his most recent just came out. Love them both and am ready to check out everything in between.
I started reading this expecting a average horror story. What I got instead was ST Discovery and a political agenda. I read not to think about politics and agendas to relax. This book is quite the opposite. What's funny is I even vote this open minded way. I just don't want to read about it. Sorry, you lost me.
Good book with imaginative twists, bringing old myths into modern times. You'll root for the good guys (and some of the bad ones). Had some twists that made me laugh and some turns that surprised me so much I had to read them twice. Highly recommend!
Quite a story. There are crazy bikers and crazier werewolves. Which animal is going to win out? Will the fourth of July be celebrated or not? Of course there is the forest fire encroaching on them all. A well-written story, including the usual ignorant mayor.
Good entertainment, good horror. Nothing closed to those loving shape shifters you can see in the covers of certain books, showing their torsos. These are actual, bad-ass ones... And hungry.
