Ok I actually look forward to reading this series and it’s not just because I like the central couple and their romance but because the author seems to have the knack of bringing worlds and customs to life. The last book featured the Merfolk and how Faerie and indeed others has somehow let them horrifically down but this time it’s the Dwarves and the mountain they protect that just might hide the magical artefact they hunt. I will say that obviously things don’t quite go to plan (do they ever ?) but Sabine handles everything with aplomb and best of all it looks like the Wild Hunt has been keeping secrets !
I love that there’s no rush here and the characters don’t hurtle from one chaotic scene to another. There’s time to breathe and get to know and understand the characters and their motives. Sabine and Makek are obviously awesome sauce together but never underestimate a Pixie ! I very much enjoyed seeing Sabine step up to her birthright and she’s clearly going to shake things up and as she’s going to tackle the Demon world next it will be interesting discovering just those family dynamics will work.
This voluntary take is of an advanced copy and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

For me to pay for multiple books in a series, you know it's good. I absolutely love this series! My only disappointment is when I finished, I immediately purchased the next one but couldn't find it on my library. I didn't notice that I pre-ordered the next book, which will be out in August.

Ugh! Dieing here!

Phenomenal and thrilling story!

WOW! I know I keep saying this but damn this story just keeps getting better and better as the series moves on. The plot is thickening like crazy and the suspense kept me utterly captivated and riveted to my seat. I devoured this book in one sitting, never wanting to take my eyes off the page. I didn’t want to miss anything! There are so many surprises and twists happening that I am not sure what is going to be thrown at us next. This is one thrilling rollercoaster ride of epic proportions.

Sabine is taking us readers on an adventurous journey through unknown lands with new characters and troubles in every corner.

Sabine is becoming a force to be reckoned with. She’s fierce, strong and utterly loyal to her makeshift family. Sabine’s intense emotions were felt with every written word. There is so much emotion in this book that it made me laugh, cry and yell with rage. Her connection with each character, new and old, forms a bond that she will carry with her throughout each part of the story. They all seem to have a role in what will happen in the end.

The Huntsman was eerily written and gave me the chills whenever he showed up on the page. I am very curious on what his end game is. Who is he really? So many questions left to be answered.

I absolutely love this series. It is brilliantly written and the vivid imagery that each word created in my mind just blew me away. I was there in every chapter as a spectator watching this story unfold.

I can’t wait to read what happens next.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Sabine and her group are in the Dwarven mountain with the Wild Hunt on their tails and corrupt magic all around them. Sabine must pass the test to prove she is in fact the real heir to the Unseelie throne or perish where she stands. As Sabine meets Astid, an elder and Councilwomen, she learns more about her mother and father and a possibility that there is a traitor amongst the dwarves. Sabine needs to make allies and gain votes before its too late.

Queen - but for how long?

Sabine and her companions encounter greater threats on their journey to, and their arrival at, the dwarven stronghold. Are her powers enough to convince potential allies when lives are in danger? Book three is even better than the other two. Characters who the reader immediately warmed to, become even more important. This is a thrilling, adventurous and compelling story. I have already pre-ordered the next one.

Where do I begin... I have been awaiting this book got what seems like a millennia and finally I got my greedy little hands on it! It definitely did not disappoint. I had trouble putting it down but I also had parts where I had to put it down because I was so frustrated I wanted to get to action and confirm if my suspicions were true, not take the long way around LOL

Cannot way until this motley crew of mystical misfits reappear in book four so I can see if my suspicions are indeed correct!

In Facets of Power, the 3rd book in The Dragon Portal Series, we see Sabine travel to Dwarven lands in hopes of securing another artifact of power to re-seal the Portal. Unfortunately, as soon as they get close, horribly corrupted power ensnares them killing crewmen and making Bane go mad.

The series is quite enjoyable but it's getting a liiiitle formulaic. Sabine goes somewhere, corrupted power shows up. Sabine does a lot of finger sticks and pushing/ pulling power with Malek. She comes to terms with the power and absorbs the artifact. I mean, within the first 50 pages Sabine is overwhelmed and cutting herself. The romance is a little staid as well. She pushes him away. He begs. She accepts him (eye-roll). Didn't we get past this in the last book?

Even the one thing I adore, Blossom, is repetitive. She stuffs her face with something yummy, holds out her hands, and looks at them pleadingly. Or gets drunk (still funny). The best in this one is her riding a cave troll!
Don't get me wrong, it's not going to stop me from reading the next one!

I received this ARC for free in exchange for my honest review.

FACETS OF POWER by JAMIE A WATERS (The Dragon Portals book 3)

Well, after reading this 3rd book in the series, I was left salivating for more! Each of these books venture into a new world, new world's the author describes only get more and more interesting. After the harrowing "encounter" with the Merfolks, I was looking forward to the Dwarven kingdom, and was not disappointed, if anything, it surpassed my expectations. It was again masterfully crafted and completely immersive. The whole "thing" between Sabine and Malek is beautifully penned, I can dinkum feel the passion and intimacy they share but I can also understand the conflicting emotions coursing through Sabine. Duty, desire and love don't gel well together, especially when the love is for the mortal enemy of her people. And every book starts off very exciting, very much heart racing. This one is no different but this time it's Sabine who has to decipher and control the danger. Which comes with dire consequences...

In their quest to find the artifacts scattered around the globe, their next point of call is the Dwalven Kingdom, but dwarves are notoriously.... which led to some very interesting and exciting events! Having read many different books about Dwarves, I found this one exceptionally different in both the description of the Dwarves themselves as well as their kingdom. It's a refreshing take on Dwarves. In fact, the entire series is a departure from the norm and that's what makes it such an awesome read. Soooooo much happens even before they get into the Dwarven mountain, Sabine's magic is tested to the limit, Bane goes...feral, Blossom ummm, unintentionally changes Rika, which was a hugely comical moment in very dramatic scenes. But geez, when the Wild Hunt finds them, I swear my saliva dried up instantly! When they finally enter Razadon, I sighed in relief...too soon! Trials, rituals, stubborn dwalves, hidden threats, The Wild Hunt, Bane...all had my head spinning. Heavens help me but I fell in love with Malek more with each page! He's so different to hid ancestors, he's very fierce and deadly yes, but he's kind, he's got a conscience and his all encompassing devotion to Sabine is a thing of beauty. He never pushed, he always protects, always stands by her and golly, the lengths he'll go to for her, well... mindboggling!

Because Sabine IS being hunted, as the rightful ruler of the unseelie court, her brother and father see her as a major threat, for the mere fact she has both seelie and unseelie powers and have set the Wild Hunt after her. But she has her protectors, Bane and Dax, she has her witchy friend Esmelle, she has the most exuberant pixie friend and she has a dragon, all firmly on her side. I love them all so much for different reasons, and there is the skill of this author in full force. Even the "side" characters are incredibly forged, I mean, heck, there's SOMETHING about the Wild Hunt which is almost....humaine, definitely unusual but all these characters are unusual and have me on the edge of my seat. Sabine and Malek, shoot, what a complexity! He is keeping vital info from Sabine, she is terrified to upset the balance of her power, so much angst I could taste it. Neither one is "the norm" in their society, they both want a better world, a world where past events don't determine the future. Which is difficult to say the least! Demons are looked at with suspicion, dragons are feared and there is a thing called long memory, proving to be a major obstacle. Sabine has the aid of a goddess but heck, THAT one is a mystery! She's not a benevolent deity, well she kind of is, but she has this sense of superiority, she just loathes anyone who she sees as irrelevant or twarting her and she's getting stronger. After the Dragon Wars, it's a toss up of who is more loathed by the people of the realm, dragons or gods...

Ms Waters sprinkles in surpises and twists when I least expect it, she almost drains away the blood from my body with each hit, fair to say I'm reeling and gobsmacked at how easily she drags me into the quagmire with her storytelling, holding me fast. A brilliant convoluted plot expands before me. Her characters are amazingly stand out characters, built up to encompass their characteristics and personalities in such an immersive way, I'm vested in every single one! The more in depth of the various characters is given in each book , the more I love them! New characters are introduced that are pivotal to the storyline and add something special with each addition, Astrid, Dagmar, Hagrim, even the grumpiest most volatile Dwalves delighted me. As the scope of Sabine's power keeps getting wider and wider with each challenge, it only enhances how she remains an extremely likable and credible character. There's much to be said about Bane, Malek and the Huntsman, omg am I intrigued! But that would be giving away too much info! All I will say is OH MY! OH MY! OH MY!!!! jaw hanging unhinged, stomach on the floor, is what those last few chapters did to me! Well done Ms Waters, you got me good! There is much to be said about this sensational story, I'll venture to say this was my favourite book of the series so far and definitely the most intense! I'm really really looking forward to the next episode in this saga!

This is book three of The Dragon Portal series and sees Sabine and her group of allies travelling to the dwarf kingdom and the city of Razadon. But their journey into the lands of the dwarves is made more difficult by some twisted magic affecting the weather and making it lethal to Malek’s crew and anyone not warded and protected by Sabine’s powers. She is also travelling with her demon protector Bane, the seer witch Rika and Blossom the pixie. Malek has to keep his dragon self under cover from the dwarves, once they hit land. Sabine needs to use her Fae and Merfolk magic, gained when she helped some merfolk and gained their trust. She now has two relics ingrained upon her arm and is now in search for a relic from the dwarf realm, in their quest to ensure the Dragon Portal stays closed. The seals of the Dragon Portal are growing weaker and if she can’t succeed, then flames and fire will reign over the world. Destroying everything in its path, as dragons once again descend from the Sky Cities and take control.

Their journey into the dwarf mountain city of Razadon is difficult, as Sabine must figure out how to stop the strange and odd magic that is corrupting the area and make it into the mountain and safety, before the Wild Hunt can track her new location. The use of her strongest magic was needed to combat whatever was wrong in the harbour and this left a huge signal to those who want her dead from the Fae Court and brokered a deal for the Wild Hunt, to be able to track her down once again! They want her dead and the Wild Hunt doesn’t give up until it succeeds in killing its prey. Razadon is deserted and Sabine has to follow the scent of the bad magic and corruption nearer to the mountain and Bane goes off track, ending up being accused of killing dwarves and in particular, one of their elders. He is taken prisoner and must face Dwarf laws, and Sabine must follow her Unseelie upbringing and prove her worth as the Queen of her people, to ensure the dwarves allow her to stay within their stone mountain safety, and that her companions are also kept safe. Unfortunately, she wasn’t old enough to have learnt the secret rituals to allow her access to the Fae Embassy within the mountain and she must figure it out on her own.

If she fails, then they will all be thrown out of the mountain and Bane will no doubt be put to death. She needs to prove her worth as the true leader of the Unseelie and ignore the fact that factions of her family have set the Wild Hunt on her and are trying to rule in her stead! But there are many within the mountain that are not pleased to see her and blame her and her companions for the death of their esteemed Elder. Malek’s true identity as a dragon has to be deeply guarded and her little pixie causes problems for Rika, as she uses some of the tainted magic on her. Lots for Sabine to cope with, never mind thinking of her bonds to both Bane and Malek. Malek and his friend are keeping secrets from Sabine and he is warned not to leave it too late before he reveals his true purpose in wanting to work with Sabine and what he really wants. Their union would never be accepted and his grandfather’s union with a Fae caused a number of problems for his family over the years, something he would be wise to not repeat, but his pull for Sabine is strong. Trying to figure out the overpowering control the goddess Lachlina seems to have through her, for her Fae control and the safety of all the people she is now connected to and meant to serve, is an almost insurmountable battle. Add in all the political skulduggery of the dwarves and she has a mountain to climb and nothing is going to get any easier. A great addition to the series and one more relic found and dangers overcome. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Of the first three installments in the Dragon Portal series, "Facets of Power" is the most dark and dire. It is non-stop gut wrenching situations after another with very little hope of relief for both the characters and the fans. Moments of levity and light heartedness are rare and I had to put the book down from time to time just to get a reprieve. However, it definitely was crescendo in the plot building to a major conflict in the future.

This time Sabine, Malek, Bane and the others make port at the Dwarven city. Unfortunately, there is a foul storm rolling in bringing such malice and corruption that the Goddess has threaten to take over Sabine's power to end the world if she does not destroy the evil taint. This is no easy task since Bane as well as others in the crew have been affected. It is all Sabine can do to set things to right.

We also discover that Malek is keeping a huge secret from Sabine. If he does not reveal it soon, it will threaten everything he has attempted to build with the woman he has grown to love. The question is does she feel the same? Bane has suspicions and warns Sabine at every turn.

Only Sabine, Malek, Blossom and Rika go into the Dwarven city of Razadon. Upon entering,Bane is immediately take into custody because first and foremost the Dwarves hate Demons and they believe that he is responsible to for the death of their elder council member and several guards. Bane goes willingly but warns Sabine to tread lightly. She must now figure out a way to keep him from being executed unjustly.

One thing is clear, as Sabine and the others attempt to figure out the politics of this new world, garner support from key Dwarven leaders as well as determining how to gain Bane's freedom, there is someone working against them at every turn. Sabine also suspects that this person or persons may be responsible for the taint on the city. One thing for sure, time is not on their side and they will have to act quickly and concisely if they are to free Bane as well as survive.

While I enjoyed this read, it was definitely my least favorite because of the darkness and lack of any real reprieve from the direness of the mounting circumstances in the book. The author definitely had not choice but to paint at picture of what is to come and one thing that I have learned is that Ms. Waters is a master at describing things in such a way that the readers can truly visualize it as it is a movie. I just wish there had been more of a break. Additionally, I wish the witch, Sabine's best friend and Malek's second in command and friend had been included in this adventure. This is the second book in which they did not have much of a presence. I feel like we are losing the closeness of the relationships established in the the first book. Hopefully, book four will bring them back into the forefront. I definitely recommend this book and this series.

DNF 16%. This series is getting redundant. Things don't make sense and it seems like the author forgot what she wrote in previous books. Sabine and Malek are still having to do blood sacrifices to share power but in previous books she has changed his mark three times with each time being for them to NOT need a blood sacrifice. The first time to allow them to share power without a blood sacrifice if they both agreed to share power. The second time it was changed so that he could draw on her power without permission or a blood sacrifice. He then insisted they be equal and made her change it a third time so that she could also draw on his power without permission or a blood sacrifice. So why are we still doing blood sacrifices to share power after all of that. It's like the author forgot what she had previously written.
Then the author brings up Malek hiding something out of nowhere. This is the third book. In the first book we knew he was hiding the fact that he was a dragon, he told her and then that was that. TWO books later the author is making up a secret that he's been hiding this entire time just to further the plot along and come up with more trust problems for their relationship. Such lazy fucking writing. There were a few more instances of lazy writing to further the plot in just the 16% I actually read. Like them bringing the teenage seer with them into a dangerous situation, and then using the fact that the teenager is there to guide the decisions the FMC makes in those moments. And the reason why she was brought was because the FMC didn't want to leave her on the ship with sailors. But the FMC's female best friend who's witch is there along with the MMC's best friend, what are they going to let happen to her? This flimsy excuse was used to bring her into so much fucking danger, The wild Hunt from fairy coming to kill the FMC any moment now, corrupted magic that is changing people, etc. And the FMC knew this before choosing to bring her all because of some vague worry about possible rape, that came out of nowhere? With friends and people that she trusts who would be right there on the ship with the girl and capable of keeping her safe if that was something you were truly worried about. Not to mention that the girl has already been alone with the crew before in the last book, with only the demon there to protect her. It was just an illogical reason to have the teenage seer with them to further the plot at some point.

I absolutely LOVE this series! Jamie A. Waters has captured every emotion I could possibly have with this latest book in the Dragon Portal series. I laughed at the antics of Blossom the pixie, I smiled and chuckled at the way some of the dwarves were described and the way they talked, I got angry at what was happening to Bane, and I swooned... I mean REALLY SWOONED at the connection between Sabine and Malek! And I cried. Real tears streaming down my cheeks. So much emotion!!!

This series is written the way I love to see a series written. There is an end goal (which keeps me anxiously anticipating the next book in the series), but each book is written with a new adventure, a new location, and new allies to be made... without losing the main characters that stay clinging to my heart... and with each new adventure Sabine and Malek come closer to their end goal (or will they make it in time?)

FACETS OF POWER takes us to the City of Razadon, a city hidden deep inside the crystal caves of a mountain, inhabited by dwarves and other magical creatures. The world building by this author is amazing, making the reader feel like they are right there. New characters are introduced including Dagmar, the talkative, energetic and tenacious young dwarf assigned to be Sabine's steward during her stay in Razadon. There is Astrid, the outspoken Councilwoman who was a former friend to Sabine's mother. And we meet Thetar, who is quite the character himself! We also see more of the young seer, Rika, in this book, who is accidently turned into part butterfly by Blossom due to the corrupted magic lurking in Razadon. And the best part of all, the part that sent chills up my spine, is that we learn a bit more about the Wild Hunt and the Huntsman himself. EEEEK!

I am so anxious to read the next book in this series and I see that Ms. Waters is already working on it. Please hurry! I need it now!

Facets of Power (and this entire series in my honest opinion) deserves to be savoured, but I tore through two books in the series in one day (as usual with my favourite reads).

Like the books before, the plot is fantastic and fast-paced, but not overpacked or exhausting. The pace of the novel leaves your heart pounding and yourself energized, like the pages are their own type of magic. Every time you think there will be a chance to catch your breath from an event that just happened, something else or someone comes and throws you for another ride trying to piece together the mystery in this series. I've not been able to guess at a single twist in Sabine's story. The story is continuing to build around Sabine's quest to claim her rightful place among the Fae, as well as Malek's quests for the Dragon Portal artifacts. The flow from one book to another is seamless. Like the previous two novels, the balance between action, intrigue, secrets and tension is gripping and won't allow an escape until the end.

We get to meet some new characters and learn a little more about Sabine and her newfound family. I like that the main characters are continuing to grow, change and adapt; but are still true to themselves, even when they are trying to find who they are and where they belong. I love the new settings that allow for more characters, cultures, and world building. I hope we get to see more of Sabine's struggle to find her balance as she claims her place in Faerie and I also hope there is a way to sort out her long term struggle with her relationship. in terms of what it means for her crown.

The world is rich and inviting, the characters are complicated and engaging, and the plot is fast and engrossing. I cannot wait for the fourth book and to see how many more obstacles will come into Sabine and Malek's paths.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I absolutely loved my first read of 2022.
This is book 3 in The Dragon Portal series by Jamie A. Waters, who manages to make each new instalment even more exciting than the last. I honestly adore this series, the way the story has developed over each book is thoroughly exciting. Each book adds more and more layers to these amazing characters and story progression.
Sabine is one of the best badass female characters out there but she is the most selfless too. She cares about everyone and those who are lucky enough to be in her friend group, love her and could not be more loyal companions.
This book picks up where we left off with the previous. They are travelling by see the dwarfs about another artefact. However, on arrival the ship is hit with a magical storm and they barely get to land. In order so save them, Sabine has no choice but to use her Fae magic, knowing it will alert the Wild Hunt to her location.
Can she evade them again and will the dwarfs help?
Oh you just have to read and see, but let’s just say it’s not such a warm welcome from all and the gang are under threat of Seelie assassins, the wild hunt and can’t trust anyone. There is a magical corruption which also caused the storm. They need to find out who or what is causing it, or lose one of them to execution.
Sabine also has to navigate through a political minefield, she is young and the elders know best.
Absolute rollercoaster of emotions, stress, excitement, laughter and a lot of love.
My favourite thing is when you find yourself smiling at the words you are reading and I caught myself a few times.
The author keeps you guessing where this could possible lead and the little shock revaluations each book are thoroughly intriguing. I can’t wait to read the next.
Highly recommend this to all that love high fantasy romance. Top marks 5/5

"All hail Queen Sabin'theoria of the Unseelie, daughter and heir of Queen Mali'theoria, and blood descendant of Lachlina, the One True Goddess, and Vestior, Harbinger of Nightmares."

After their adventure with the Merfolk. Sabine, Malek and their other companions are back on the ship on their way to Dwarven, city of the Dwarves.

The closer they get, the greater becomes the feeling that something is wrong. When they are attacked by a strange storm, part of the crew die or lose control of their actions, including Bane and Malek. Thanks to their connection with Sabine and her new power granted by the pearl of the Merfolk, they manage to reach safely the city of the dwarves, Razadon.

This new display of Sabine's magic, without being covered by her protectors, results in indicating to the Wild Hunt her exact location, so they have no choice but to hide in Razadon.
Between the corruption permeating the air, the goddess threatening to control her bond with Malek and Bane, and the knowledge assassins were hunting her, this entire situation had the potential to go wrong very quickly.

The problem is that the storm was created by corrupt magic, which enrages the goddess Lachlina, who forces Sabine to search for the origin and end it. Furthermore, this magic seems to affect Bane more than the others, driving him into a demonic frenzy in which he slays the dwarves that attack him. This makes him a prisoner, and he is sentenced to death.

The crew is sent away from the city because of the dangers that exist in it. So Sabine, Malek, and Blossom must take it upon themselves to save Bane. Now with the help of Rika, a human "seer" whom Sabine agreed to rescue in Karga and who is now half butterfly (you will understand by reading it 😉).

Now Sabine, who has become the new Unseelie queen, needs to prove her power against the dwarves to maintain the alliance, as she tries to overcome their political entanglements to rescue Bane. All while searching for the cause of the corruption before the goddess Lachlina loses her patience and does it on her own.

Sabine is not ready to become queen. However, there is nothing she can do about it. She is forced to do everything in her power to prove to others that she will be a trustworthy queen and thus not lose her allies. Even if her confidence is just a performance.
"We've secured at least four votes, possibly five. The others can bend, or they can break. If they want to play games, I intend to win."

Fortunately, she has Malek by her side, a dragon who has been several times in the city of the dwarves thanks to his facade as a merchant and ship captain. Sabine finds in him the strength to keep up appearances, as well as important advice on how to negotiate with them. Unfortunately Malek is hiding something. He hasn't told the whole truth about the portal to Sabine and knows he could lose her when she finds out.
"The one woman I end up falling for is the one person who holds the power to either save our people or damn them for eternity. If I have to lose her in the process of saving them, I'll do it. I'll hate every second of it, but I'll do it."

In addition, Sabine is clear that her relationship with Malek cannot last, as her people will never accept a dragon with their queen. However, she cannot find the strength to get away from him.
She reached for him, and he wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close. There was no use denying it. She'd fallen in love with a dragon. They'd known each other for such a short amount of time, but it didn't matter. The obstacles they'd faced had shown her who he truly was, and that was the man she'd come to adore.

Another very interesting thing is that it is becoming increasingly clear that the Huntsman, leader of the Wild Hunt, has some interest in Sabine and in helping her instead of killing her. Although we do not know why.

I can't say much about Bane and Rika without spoilers. But I love both characters. Bane is the demon that has an oath with Sabine, although she mentions on many occasions that demons are not the same as other races in terms of emotions, it is very clear that he really cares about Sabine. He also seems to have a special relationship with Rika.

This young seer is only 15 years old, and she was forced to leave her home and her grandmother to survive. Sabine feels completely identified with her, so she does her best to support her. Rika's abilities have not been fully developed, but she already proves to be a valuable ally, who immediately grew fond of everyone, but especially Bane and Blossom.

Blossom is once again in charge of delivering abundant amounts of humor. But it is increasingly showing how important she is as an ally and friend.

One thing I really like about this series is that they don't end in cliff-hangers. The end of this book is a little more terrible than the previous ones, but it still doesn't leave you totally hanging. It makes me think of Percy Jackson. I haven't read the books (😅) but in the movies, each one focuses on a particular mission / story, with a base story that ties them together. In the style of Harry Potter the first 4 years.

In this case we are touring the kingdoms hand in hand with Sabine. Each book mainly focuses on one kingdom (at least it seems so 😅). In the first they were in the realm of humans, in the second in that of the Merfolk and now in that of the dwarves. It is no longer a spoiler that the main story corresponds to the search for the artifacts used by the gods to close the portal of the dragons and prevent a new war in the world. But this book focuses on the object guarded in the kingdom of the dwarves, and therefore in this race and its relationship with Sabine.

I still recommend 100% this series. Especially for those who love pure fantasy and fairies, and dragons, and dwarfs, and a thousand other creatures. It is one of the most magical sagas that I have read.

PS: A very interesting discovery is that, of the original races, only dwarfs can grow facial hair. Officially I want to be a Fae 🤣.

The journey of Sabin'theoria of the Unseelie, daughter and heir of Queen Mali'theoria, and blood descendant of Lachlina, the One True Goddess and Vestior, Harbinger of Nightmares continues in this third installation of The Dragon Portal Series. This book brings more to the characters that have been present throughout the series so far as well as introduced new characters and creatures. What I have enjoyed about this series so far and that continued in this book is the relationships between all of the different creatures and species. When another one is introduced it is explained how they fit into this world of magic and how this will or will not impact the characters that the readers have come to love. The dwarves and their hierarchy were such an interesting thing to explore throughout this book. Seeing how they valued crystals and why they would, and how the different guilds had different priorities. I also loved the cave trolls and hope to see more of them in the future.

However, hands down my favourite part of this book was Sabine coming into her own. Without spoiling too much she is beginning to accept her position over the Unseelie in a way that she hasn't before. All while still having the softer side that readers can see when she is with those she cares about. She took a huge leap in this book and I cannot wait to see what comes of it. Also the relationship between her and Malek… so beautiful and one of my favourite relationship couples! Seeing their connection strengthen was beautiful, although I foresee rocky roads ahead for them. I love these characters and look forward to seeing them grow in the next book.

I've spent a good portion of the last week revisiting the first two books of this series before delving into the advanced copy I received from the author of this latest addition. Prior to this book, the Dragon Portal series was, by far, one of my favorite reads of the year, so much so that I have been anxiously awaiting Facets of Power since I finished book two several months ago.

This book was absolutely brilliant.

"...Life and death are simply alternative sides of a coin."
"And I've been transmuting coins since I was old enough to walk."

My heart threatened to pound its way through my chest the entire time I navigated the last half of the book. Like the previous two novels, the balance Waters strikes between action, intrigue, secrets and sensual tension is so masterful that her words grip you tight as a demon's embrace and won't allow your escape until the journey is through. I've not been able to guess at a single twist in Sabine's story, and it's been a delightful ride at that. Every time Sabine finds herself in unknown territory, with the odds against her and her allies on similar uneven footing, the author finds a way to have her overcome and thrive in unexpected ways.

It is obvious that I'm drowning in need for the next installment. That I'd recommend this book (and the first two, as they most definitely must be appreciated in the intended order) should go without saying.

As previously stated, I received an advanced copy from the author and am leaving this honest review voluntarily.

I received a free copy of Facets of Power by Jamie A Waters from Book Sirens.

This is the third volume in the Dragon Portal Series and it was a great read! I absolutely adore the characters in this story and I love reading about the various adventures and inevitable trouble they seem to find themselves in. The plot continues to follow the main character, Sabine, as she journeys to help the man she loves, evade the family who wants her dead and come in to her own as her destiny demands. What I love most about these books, especially this one, is that there is little opportunity for a dull moment. I never want to stop reading.

The author uses comfortable language in an eloquent way to appeal to experienced and beginner readers. I love exploring what it means to be a part of Faerie with the characters and find myself drawn in to world of the story as though I am one of the companions, a long for the journey. So far we have met several various civilizations in this world and each with their own secrets that Sabine is able to help bring to light. With each book we also gain new lovable and also abhorrent characters which makes reading this series a rich and enjoyable experience.

The reason for only 4 stars and not 5 is that I crave more depth in the back story and the characters themselves. I want to know more of what makes them who they are. The author does an adequate job with the character development...just not quick or deep enough for me. If you haven't read the previous two stories, I recommend you do, and definitely read this one!

Sabin’theoria has claimed her title as queen of the Unseelie, but now she has to fight to keep it. She must have allies if she is to defend her throne against her father, the Seelie king, who continues to plot her demise. On the ship of her dragon lover Captain Malek Rish’dan, she journeys to the dwarven city of Razadon alongside her trusted friends. But there is corruption in that city, and as a result, her demon protector Bane is taken captive by the dwarves. Desperate to save her friend and prove to the dwarves that she is a competent queen, Sabine must play the powerful queen while searching for the source of the corruption. All of this takes a toll on Sabine’s magic, which only Malek can help replenish. Although Sabine loves Malek, she is hesitant to say those words to him, because she knows the Unseelie will never accept a dragon by her side. Malek is charming and kind, and he believes that they can stay together. But Malek is hiding a secret from Sabine, a secret that could destroy everything they have... Will love conquer all? Or are there some obstacles that cannot be overcome?

Wow! “Facets of Power” by Jamie A Waters is the third book in the Dragon Portal series. I’ve become so invested in this story. Sabine is an extremely likeable main character, and you will definitely be rooting for her to succeed! The dwarven city of Razadon was described so beautifully, and all the politics that were happening in this book were very entertaining. I can’t wait until book 4 is released!

I love this #fantasyseries ! It is so good!
These books that transport you into a completely different world, let you forget reality for a little while and simply make you believe all you’re reading is real. Those are the best books. And in my opinion the #TheDragonPortals series is one of those. Thinking about how we’re only halfway through this story and thinking about all the adventures that are yet to come makes me giddy with anticipation.

Considering how book 1 started I thought there would be some more spice in this series, however, it is surprisingly clean and I am not even mad about it, because the adventurous side makes up for it!

There are so many amazing characters, we get to know new characters in every book and even though the world is #highfantasy it is surprisingly easy to navigate. I don’t have any issues with names, even if there are a couple months for me between reading books, the author #JamieAWaters does a fantastic job of reminding us of the things that happened in earlier books, without making it seem like too much info dump. The series is well balanced as well!

And our main characters.... I love each and every one of them, but especially Blossom took over my heart in this book, because this little Pixie is so cute and funny.😂💖

I am very much looking forward to book 4 in this series #ShadowsAndTwilight , to more adventures in the Underworld and to meeting Dax again!😍🔥

This third novel in the series picks up where the second left off - after Sabine's encounter with the merfolk. Still in hiding from the Wild Hunt, Sabine and her cohort set off again - this time to Razadon, seat of the dwarves. But a corrupt magic has taken over, and it falls to Sabine to put things to rights before Lachlina steps in, and before the Wild Hunt catches up to her.

This is a very strong entry - my favourite so far in the series. The pacing is excellent, and description is woven through the story without being intrusive. The world-building stands out and is unfurled in a way that fits the story being told.

The characters are really appealing to me. As with the second volume, I wish they had been a little more complex, but I felt that this novel did reveal additional facets of them that were revelatory to me. The new characters introduced were intriguing. I definitely hope we'll see more of a couple of them in future installments!

I also really appreciated the thought and development that went into Dwarven culture. I found this to be very well-defined, and the revelation of how this culture differed from others was expertly handled, without information dump or interference in the pacing. I also appreciated some details that were revealed about other Fae cultures.

I really enjoyed this novel and look forward to the next book in the series.

I received an ARC via the author.

This is the third book in this series. It's also the book that took me the longest to read because I struggled with the changed character dynamic. It feels as though the primary female character has gone from a strong, independent person into the all too common damsel in distress. She shows moments of strength and power, but the bulk of her story in this book is her turning to her male companions to save her. I understand that a good character needs to evolve and to demonstrate trust in others etc. That doesn't mean that a strong female suddenly has to be weak, or even 'on the edge of being' weak. It seems like the author, Jamie A. Waters, had fallen into the frequent trap of having a character that is too strong in their initial portrayal, and therefore the author is forced to create various weaknesses later on just to add conflict to the story arc. In this instance, the female lead makes numerous really bad choices that would have been obvious to her as she was portrayed in the first book. Regardless, the story continues fairly well, and the writing lacks any major flaws. I rated this as 3 of 5 stars, which I translate as meaning I found it to be 'okay' or slightly better than average. I don't regret investing the time to read it, but it's not something I would go out of my way to read.

The best book in the series so far
Audiobook version: 5 stars overall, 5 stars story, 5 stars narration

It took me about an hour to really get absorbed into this action-packed story, but then I didn’t want to stop. Really interesting and dangerous stuff was happening all the time. I think this is the best book so far in the series, partly because the dwarven city and culture was so interesting. The danger factor for Sabine and her friends was quite high, and I was spellbound. Thankfully her relationship with the dragon guy is nicely progressing. I loved the frequent magic use and attacks in this book. Now I can’t wait to listen to Sabine’s next adventure in Book 4. I was slightly irritated by Sabine’s overly frequent analysis of her relationships and balance of power in them.

The single narrator did an amazing job with unique voices and accents for each character, including a range of Scottish brogues for the dwarves. I think that she talks too slowly, so I listened at 1.35x speed (I hardly ever speed up a book, FYI). Still she sounded completely eloquent, emotive, and lovely at that speed. She is great at action scenes too.

Early on in this book we discover that all is not as it seems. Secrets are being kept, secrets that could impact the dynamics of the makeshift family that’s been collected through their travels. This book had me rooting for Sabine, Malek, and especially Bane(who seems to be perpetually misunderstood). After her success with the True Folk, the gang is now faced with a new challenge and new people to win over.

I’m once again impressed by Waters’ writing style and her ability to be descriptive without being overly wordy. Character development is strong in everyone, but especially Sabines’ development throughout the books from someone who trusts no one, to now slowly letting those closest in. There a quite a few “feel good” moments where Sabine sticks up for what she believes is right and advocates for her friends. I missed a few of the usual suspects, and can only hope we see more of them in future books. I can already tell that this will be a series that I will happily reread over and over.

Holding my breath until the next book and seeing where their journey brings them next!

The adventures continue for Sabine and her friends, who now travel to the city of Razadon, where the dwarves live. Many have been fleeing and there is a source of bad magic in the city. But the Wild Hunt still chases after Sabine, and she and her friends must seek sanctuary in the city, where Sabine will have to accept her role as Queen of the Unseelie. Sabine grows closer to Malek, her dragon lover that has secrets of his own. Malek loves Sabine and will do anything to keep her safe as well as his crew. Blossom continues with her antics, for the pixie is always getting into something. But there is so much more going on in the city, for there are those who seem unhappy by Sabine's appearance. Sabine must determine friend from foe, ally from enemy, for everyone wants to make a bargain with her. Sabine also contends with the Goddess Laclina, who demands justice. Sabine needs to discover the truth behind the dark magic before she loses all those she loves and cares for as well as herself.

Sex, Language, Editing: See my review of Book 2
Violence: See my review of Book 1
Series: I noticed that this was marked as a book you can read as a standalone, that is absolutely NOT true. It's a series that needs to be read in order.

I feel about this book about the same as I felt about book 2 in the series, which is I absolutely loved it. Book 2 focuses on time among merpeople and humans, this book focuses on time among the dwarves. This book finally shows some dragon fighting, which I was excited about, and Sabine and Malek's relationship comes to a head. It also turns out that Malek has some secrets... I enjoyed the pairing of Levin and Esmelle, though they don't get much screen time, and I'm starting to hope for a pairing between Bane and Rika (once she gets a little older). Sabine's connection to the goddess is starting to feel a little more ominous, and I'm really excited to see where this series goes. I can't wait for book 4!

Sabine 'Sabin'theoriai' of the Unseelie is heir to the Unseelie court. She is their rightful queen but is in hiding due to her father and brother attempts to use the Wild Hunt to kill her. She and Malek Rish'dan are on a quest to gather allies and find the artifacts to seal the Dragon Portal.

Sabine gathers around her an eclectric group of unlikely friends and allies, forming bonds of friendship and love, while amassing power to protect the world. As they travel toward the Dwarven stronghold they encounter an evil winter storm that corrupts and kills. It will take Malek, Bane'umbra, Bl.ossom and Rika to help Sabine neutralize the corruption and save Bane from Dwarves trying to kill him.

I absolutely LOVE this series. The characters are fabulous and the world is fascinating. I loved being immersed in this world, it's going to be hard to wait for the next book to be released.

The Dwarf City . . .

Sabine and her team arrive in the dwarf city Razadon as they look for another artifact of power to re-seal the Dragon Portal that is continuing to weaken. Time is running out and if they cannot gather all of the artifacts, the world will be consumed by flames. But a clan member, Badac Coinbasher, is murdered, and the newcomers are the first to be under suspicion. They arrest Bane for the atrocity of killing an Elder. With Bane on trial for murder, can Sabine discover what really happened in order to save her friend? Can she find the artifact before time runs out? Because there is a chance that the mountain being protected could possibly be hiding the magical artifact they are looking for!

This story line will really hold the reader captive as it plays out in the most exciting way. Sabine proves time and again that she is worthy of the powers she accumulates. And her friends don’t hesitate to jump in and do all they can to protect her just as she protects them. Don’t miss the dragonfire and the new power Sabine earns as she attacks the corruption.

Facets of Power is a pulse‑quickening instalment that pushes the world of The Dragon Portal into deeper danger, darker magic, and nerve‑shredding tension. Sabine — no longer sheltered by beginnings — is thrust into the heart of the dwarven city of Razadon, where alliances are fragile, ancient magic corrodes the land, and every secret could cost a life.

From the first pages, the stakes feel inescapable. A murder rooted in ritualistic corruption casts suspicion on Sabine and her companions, forcing them to prove their innocence even as the seals of the Dragon Portal weaken and threaten to unleash devastation upon their world. Time is a relentless adversary — every tick brings flames closer, corruption deeper, and betrayal nearer.

What makes this book stand out is how it blends high‑stakes fantasy with emotional tension. Sabine’s journey isn’t just about survival — it’s about proving herself as a leader, navigating the politics of a suspicious dwarf kingdom, and protecting those she holds dear while shadows close in.
