Hans Wilhelm, the author and illustrator, has written over two hundred books and sold over 42 million copies. The Waldo series began in 1986 and continued until 2016. This book, WALDO, EINS, ZWEI, DREI, was published in 1988 and is a counting book. The illustrations take up the full page, with the text on either the bottom or top, and centered. The artwork is cartoon like rather than realistic and depicts the various animals that Waldo the dog is counting. At first it is a little confusing to understand that Waldo the dog is the counter since he does not appear on every page. However it is easy to see the connection between the number of animals (five pigs, six sheep, etc) and the numeral's bolded in the sentence below. The sentences appear to be short and to the point leading me to believe that the book would do well read aloud to a child beginning to learn their numbers.
