The Highlander On The Run

Rate this book
A hairdresser with access to secrets, a freedom fighter with a flair, and an observant baron with a calculating mind…

Adelberta McMurrie, known by her friends as Addie, is an intelligent lass working for the master of her father, Lord Baliol, whom the King of England has chosen to place on the empty Scottish throne. Thrust into the employ of the King of England, Addie finds herself in the midst of danger and uncertainty. Many of the nobles abhor Lord Baliol and despise him as future king over Scotland. Addie, however, supports him wholeheartedly, until she meets Alexander Raeburne.

The intelligent Highlander finds herself in a precarious position when Addie discovers she may be with child by Alexander out of wedlock. Hoping to reverse her mortal sin and assuage her guilt, Addie chooses to return to the castle, regardless of the danger to herself, in order to aid Alexander in bringing freedom to Scotland from the control of the King of England.

A determined Baron-turned-freedom fighter

Alexander Raeburne has come to Berwick Castle to free Scotland from the English King Edward I, and removing Lord Baliol from power, by whatever means necessary. While on a spy mission, scouting out the castle, Alexander has a chance encounter with Addie, one that will forever change his life. After that, he cannot get her out of his mind, or his heart. Especially when he finds that she is possibly in danger.

When Alexander can no longer contain his love for Addie, he rescues her from the castle, only to have her return when she believes she would be nothing but a hindrance to him in his cause. However, the courageous Baron will stop at nothing to get her back, especially when he discovers she could be the object of a village spectacle. Determined to stay with her, and still fulfill his mission of killing the King, Alexander formulates and tries to execute, plan after plan, only to have something stand in the way of his success every time.

Love at last

Love finally wins for Addie and Alexander when Addie must flee one last time from Berwick Castle, or risk both her own life and the life of the bairn she carries. A chance encounter on a forested path gives Alexander a place for them both to find sanctuary, and allow them to be wed before her pregnancy becomes known. For an outlaw determined to see the King removed and a hairdresser in royal employ, life, and love, will not be easily won – with danger around every corner.

Will Addie be able to choose between her love for Alexander and atoning for her sin – or will she have to beg for mercy from uncaring relatives?

"The Highlander On The Run" is a standalone historical Scottish romance novel of approximately 60,000 words. No cliffhangers, pure content and an awesome happily ever after, guaranteed to ignite your imagination in one sitting.

This is a very complicated love story but worth reading. Addie McMurrie's father has died and she was sent to Lord Baliol to work, she was a hairdresser. His entourage went to Berwick Castle, the king was coming. Alexander Raeburne, was Baron Raeburne. He wanted to kill whoever became the King of Scotland. Unless it was the Bruce. Alex had a small gang but he only took 2 of his cohorts. He was great at making plans for one reason or another and never could manage to get it all together. They had made love twice and she got a surprise. She wanted to tell him but didn't.
This wAs an exciting and funny novel. The writing was so good, it was hard to put down. Something always seemed to be happening. I loved it where Alex gave her, her first kiss. After that, she wanted them all the time. They were a sweet couple.

A Stranger That Pulls Me To Him

This is the story of a deceased Stewart's daughter Addie McMurrie and the job given to her by her Lord to work for the King to report back to him of irregularities in the Kingdom. She has trained as a Hairdresser in her youth to have a job that would give her some value. This job gives her freedom from the drugery many others must do.
Enters now the tall handsome young man that is a mystery. He captured her attention and she discovers he is a Scottish spy sent to get the lay of the land with the English King visiting there.
This is a fun adventure of these two who are discovering more than just government secrets, but romantic ones as well. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to the next one.

Ferguson starts a new series with the romance of Addie and Alexander. Alex is a highland baron in hiding fighting the English king's influence in Scotland, making him a traitorous outlaw in the borderlands. Addie is earning her living as a hairdresser, given in service to the English king by her Lord Baloil, who has become hated because he was chosen by the English king to be Scotland's puppet king. So how do these two on opposite sides meet, fall in love, and work together through many near-death adventures? Iron runs through both these characters for sure! You'll be hard-pressed to put it down until you reach the HEA ending!

Addie and Alex fall in love when they first meet. There are dangerous times in store for them. What will happened when Addie finds out who Alex really is? Very well written. Will hold your interest from start to finish.

Keeping with the Blood of Duncliffe series Emilia Ferguson continues with the Highlander on the Run. A story that I had a hard time to get into until the middle and then it kept me interested. The story of a hairdresser and a possible spy who are brought together under unusual circumstances and ended up with an unexpected ending.

Surprised with the story

I liked this story because it has been a lot of twists and turns that makes you think you know where the plot is going, then it heads in another direction. Don't miss this one.
