On the Origin of Species, Sabina Radeva's gorgeous, child-friendly take on arguably Charles Darwin's most groundbreaking work, is nothing short of a delight!
The illustrations are colourful and simply breathtaking; they complement the narrative perfectly and will no doubt have young readers asking a multitude of different questions. I would've loved a book like this when I was very young. I read the Kindle version but urge potential buyers to opt for a physical copy, of which I have pre-ordered for my bookshelf based on how stunning it is to look at, as I feel it would be nothing short of a travesty to not have the beauty of it on show. It fully deserves all five stars; I would award it more if I could.
Sabina Radeva's 2019 Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species is a scientifically sound, engagingly penned picture book adaptation of Darwin’s magnum opus (and I do textually adore that Radeva has not only summarised Charles Darwin's words but also includes quite a number of direct quotes from On the Origin of Species throughout her text). And indeed, and delightfully, Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species, it is basic and simple enough to allow for the main parts of Darwin's theory of evolution to become nicely accessible to children (to readers from about the age of eight or so onwards) but that at the same time Sabina Radeva also demonstrates with her printed words that children equally deserve to and need to be challenged a bit, and that with Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species, Radeva's combination of textual simplicity and occasional forays into something a bit more advanced (whilst at the same time staying far enough away from convolutedness, from scientific/biological jargon and thankfully avoiding too much name dropping) certainly makes Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species a very good general introduction to Charles Darwin and to his theory of evolution not only for children but for older readers as well, for interested teenagers and adults wanting something not overly difficult and complex.
So yes, and for me personally (and as a someone for whom text kind of is the alpha and the omega), it is of course and naturally Sabina Radeva's words that are the star of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species (and that I really appreciate do how Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species equally points out where Darwin might have been a bit wrong and that his theory of evolution has been ever more expanded upon because of scientific and paleontological advancements and breakthroughs, not to mention that Radeva appreciatively also points out what the theory of evolution is not and what some of the major misconceptions concerning evolution are). However and the above having been stated, the accompanying artwork for Charles Darwin's On the origin of Species (and which is also by Sabina Radeva, as she is both author and illustrator for Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species), Radeva's pictures are most definitely a visual, an evocative and delightful aesthetic treat, are colourfully vibrantly realistic while at the same time also imaginative, fun and with even some occasional and smiles inducing gentle bits of illustrative humour thrown in, and that how Sabina Radeva's words and images for Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species successfully manage to mirror and complement each other does in my humble opinion really does take a lot of the potential confusion out of the theory of evolution and renders this book almost perfect in every way (and with the back matter, with the author's note, the appendix, glossary and the suggestions for further reading being the icing on an already very delicious reading cake, although I do think that Sabina Radeva should be adding more book titles to her bibliographical list and considering that Charles Darwin's on the Origin of Species was published in 2019, yes, I do m most definitely tend to think that aside from books, theory of evolution themed websites should also be included).
I don't usually read children's books but I bought this for my nephew's birthday and couldn't resist reading it before wrapping it up! Radeva has re-told and illustrated this children's version of On The Origin of Species beautifully and I recommend it to anyone with younger children.
An informative and concise retelling of Darwin’s On The Origin of Species, which allows key aspects his theory of evolution to be accessible to children, whilst also maintaining respect that children are capable of being challenged. Radeva’s vibrant illustrations make this such an attractive, clear text, making what can be perceived as a tricky subject matter enticing and easier to understand. Lots of opportunities to develop skills in reading non-fiction are present, with footnotes, an appendix and a glossary to explore. Accompanied by a short history of how Darwin came to develop his theory, Radeva’s book would really encourage readers to be observant in noticing the differences within species and between living things, and ponder upon where and what form they initially began. Darwin’s own words are weaved throughout, making this a faithful retelling and keeping roots firmly planted in the original paper. What I particularly liked about this text is that it makes apparent areas where Darwin’s theory have moved on with new scientific developments, which I think really encourages readers that there is always more to discover.
A very very beautiful and interesting book about Darwin, Origin of species and evolution. Loved reading it, so interesting and loved that there were quotes from Darwin/Darwin's book included. While I knew most of the things written in this book I still learned the odd bit here and there. And given how it was written and the gorgeous illustrations I had no problem reading the bits that I already knew. Be sure to also check out the absolutely GORGEOUS endpapers/endpages of this book. Those butterflies and beetles are just so pretty!
I loved the gorgeous illustration in this children's nonfiction book! Radeva has adapted some of Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species for a very brief easy explanation to children. It is one I think would be perfect for kids and parents to look at together.
I enjoyed this book so much! It's basically a picture book version of Darwin's original: retold, drastically condensed, and beautifully illustrated. This book is quite long and I didn't think it would make a good readaloud, so I just enjoyed it myself.
Everything about this book was just right, from the pictures, to the fonts, to the quotes from Darwin, to the brief list of misconceptions about Darwin's theory at the back. Highly recommended!
Evolution and adaptation is not an easy to topic to get your head around but Sabina Radeva has created a wonderful illustrated text which makes Darwin's On The Origin of Species accessible for a young audience. It includes quotations from the original text as well as simplified explanations of how animals have adapted for purpose and evolved. The illustrations include beautiful realistic depictions of a range of creatures.
A beautiful introduction for younger readers to understand Darwin's theories, perfect for using the science lessons and the illustrations are very cute!
A child friendly version of Charles Darwin’s well known book. The illustrations are lovely and the text is transformed into a child friendly format.
I really like that at the end of the book there is a quick summary surrounding Darwin’s Theory of Evolution as it summarises points to ensure clarity. The appendix does a great job of explaining the finer details, also accompanied by illustrations. The author also addresses common misconceptions surrounding Evolution - this is particularly useful for lesson planning! I think it’s also really great that the author also includes recommendations for books which are similar to their own and are also informative picture books on the topic of Darwin’s theory.
Autorka vybrala citáty a témy Darwinovej knihy veľmi dobre. Vysvetľuje ich primerane a veľmi zrozumiteľne.
An absolutely beautiful book. The illustrations are amazing. The writing is crisp and well suited for younger readers. So excited to have been able to sponsor on Kickstarter.
I picked this one up for the gorgeous illustrations. The text inside is geared towards children. It does a good job of reducing technical information into understandable terms. Despite knowing next to nothing about Darwin, I didn't learn much of anything new about his beliefs on the origins of species, however, I am not the target audience. Perhaps, this would be sufficient for children but I would imagine that this book would lead to more questions than answers for children.
Review : Charles Darwin’s on the Origin of Species retold and illustrated by
The book has beautiful illustrations and evolution described so succinctly , making it a succulent read . My sons loved reading it. It covers myriad of topics, viz ; theory of evolution , natural selection , what are species , natural variations , geological imperfections etc !
A highly recommendable book on Charles Darwin’s groundbreaking work. The book uses simple and engaging language, making it ideal for the target audience and more accessible to younger readers. This adaption combines many of Darwin’s concepts, such as natural selection and the variation of species, in an entertaining and informative way. Each page is accompanied with wonderful illustrations that bring the scientific concepts to life, making them easier to understand and visualise.
