Needs a Lot of cutting

I generally enjoy the premise and am looking forward to the story continuing. However, as the author states... there was a lot of extra explaining. In some cases he went on for dozens of pages about something like infusing the air with alcohol... essentially killing the story while we wait for he explanation to finish. This happens through the entire book.

In addition, very little really happens. Inheritance. Crossing the pass (barely an event), and the battle at the station. That’s it. Three events with barely any surrounding set up. That’s not enough for a novel... the rest was explaining after the fact how Micheal did something amazing by combining artifacts in some way. Those situations generally feel like they are made up on the fly and became less and less available over the course of the story as there was no previous foreshadowing. Specifically, random new elements from the inheritance showing up. Some of The most interesting parts of the story were glossed over in he last few pages of the book. Instead of reading about those we got air alcohol infusion or 15 minute long descriptions of a single move in a 75 page fight.

To the author, I like your story a lot, but I want to read more of the story and I want it to feel inventive and less like magic out of a hat.

Boring

Reads like a textbook. Very disappointed, 5% plot, 10% overly detailed “fights” and 85% useless information. First two books were really good, but this one was so boring that I’ve found I just don’t care about the story because there isn’t one anymore. It reads like an encyclopedia of all the stuff no one cares about. I like the author and hope he takes the feedback to heart.

Painful world building

A major step down from the prior two novels. Major issues:
-world building is just dumped on you. You have to slog through it. And it hurts. I found myself skipping paragraphs. No effort is made to try to weave it in to the story.
-the book is basically without much dialogue. You follow Michael for the whole thing. Most of it is in his head. You lose a lot I think. It also compounds the first issue.
-action scenes are boring and hard to follow. The planning aspect that made the other novels fun to read is not very noticeable.

Book feels rushed. Not really that enjoyable.

It was good but something seemed to be missing. He’s didn’t seem to continue the plot very much. Seemed almost like a set up for future events but also seemed like something big happened.

Was a bit too much of sudden future knowledge for my liking; but it’s very hard to balance that type of story telling.

Not sure yet how I feel, will need to ruminate and come back to this

I liked his previous books very much. This was also good, but not as great as the ones before. One of the reasons is, that in the whole book isn't any kind of supporting character except maybe that one bandit leader for half a chapter. So I'll subtract one star. Another big problem this book has - and for what I substracted another star - is that it really jumped the shark with all the convoluted deus ex machina. Like 'Ahh I can only defeat this enemy by affecting the full area with alcoholic insence and magically transferring the malicious ghost I'm possessed by while simultainously using a long range artifact to buff a sound artifact that makes high level magic beasts explode in a nuclear reaction'. Ehm ... what? Less of this and more of the awesome action scenes and were golden again.

Disappointing

The author seemed to realize the flaws in this book as he acknowledged them. This story was ok but it was a lot fights were the mc was never really in danger, lots of explanations (show don’t tell being the rule), and the lack of shin and Sofia was a major issue. Looking forward to book four.

Sluggish

A tale of swashbuckling adventure in a world of superpowers and martial arts shouldn't be dull. Repetition, inane philosophical musing, circular logic, and overlong descriptions make it dull.
The underlying story is good and many of the characters are interesting, but the writing style is badly flawed. I found the overuse and misuse of "unique" especially bothersome. The action is too 'anime' for the audience to determine what is hyperbole, poor phrasing, or literal truth; one passage described two big men with a huge axe on their backs and I still am not sure if both men each had an axe or if the two shared one massive weapon that they cooperated to use, because both options are possible in this ridiculous setting.

Plot picks up from book 2. The setting and enemies are different and it's interesting to keep reading the output of the brilliant imagination of the author, species, abilities, weapons...it's awesome.

As to the peeves, the info -dumps seem to be getting larger too. Lots of page time is spent on explaining abilities that get used only once. This is a drag and drastically reduces the pace and flow of the books.

As to character development, it also has come to a standstill, we just see levelling up. Even the supporting cast seems to have dropped off making the book very uni-dimensional.

Definitely a good read, but the author needs to shake things up to keep this from getting repetitive.

An Ok-ish read. Definitely the weakest of the series.

Unnecessary long fight sequences...

Waaaayyyyyy too description and world building...

Lack of intresting secondary characters and the main plot progressed very little...

But I'm gonna continue this series anyway. Hoping for the next book to be as good as book 1 and 2.

Like the Story

But it had way too much explanation that made it hard to follow. Other times there was not enough background in an attempt to surprise the reader which is annoying and was poorly done.

Not as much action in this one and the MC has left his 2 friends behind on the first layer. It is still very improbable for him to know so much about the history including how much everything costs in the shop. The numbers start to not mean anything anymore. He is the only one with memories of the future and if he dies then the world is doomed. He keeps putting himself if very dangerous situations. He goes into fights needing everything to work perfectly for him to win. That doesn't seem very smart. He needs to bring more people to his side to make it more realistic. His goal seems to be in opposition to what he is actually doing. His goal is to make humanity stronger to survive. He seems to just be trying to keep disasters from happening keeping more people alive which won't necessarily make them stronger. People can't get stronger without taking risks and the more people the safer they are. I wish there was a more concrete plan. Still, I enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next one.

Good but a bit verbose

This author is really talented. I've read and enjoyed the other books in this series. This one was pretty good, but could have been better. There were just too many explanations. The MC would be in the middle of a battle scene and there would be 3 pages of explanation about a particular action. These overly detailed explanations really interrupted the flow of the book. Also the story seemed too short. Once you strip out the excess explanations, it seems a bit lacking in terms of progress made. With that said some of the scenarios were brilliantly constructed and the book overall was solid.

Not a bad story. I was expecting more of the butterfly effect waves as mentioned in the description, but to be honest, they only appeared to show up when it was convenient to advance the plot, not really when it would be just something interesting to observe.
Otherwise, it was a nice addition to the story arc, and I look forward to more as it goes.

a tough read

I think this works better as an audiobook. Many of the fight scenes are broken up with long explanations that make for an uneven battle.

Of course, those same battles are usually taking place at speeds beyond human, so…

I am looking forward to the next novel.

There's a lot to like about this book. The protagonist is "purpose" personified. The world seems more complicated than reality, if that's possible. There are more ideas per page than most books contain in their entirety. And in a way, it's the very richness of the story that is its greatest weakness.

Kerr is an amazing author with a brain the size of a planet, but that doesn't mean every idea and stray thought should be recorded for posterity. Much of the book transpires as the narrative equivalent of a Michael Bay slow-motion action sequence. Each and every piece of shrapnel is tracked to its destination, sometimes from multiple angles. What that means here is that a ten-second fight might take ten pages to describe.

The heart of this series is still alive and well. I'm keen to get the next book. If full immersion into a sea of detail is the price of admission, I'm willing to pay it.

This book would be okay, but it feels like the author seems to be off the opinion “why use one word when you can use ten?” Seriously, it felt like everything got explained ten times as much as it needed to and my eyes were glazing over every other paragraph by the end lol.

Alert

I hate trying to write reviews because there are really only pass/fail results for me. Did I make it all the way through? Yes? 5 stars. No? There would be nothing here to read. In all fairness, if an author holds my attention from page one to the end, they’ve done their job. Anything less than 5 stars is petty criticism from someone incapable of even doing the job let alone doing a better one.

So in respect for the author and their work, I am going to start pasting this along with a generic review I found somewhere. “This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”

Now, since I have to keep explaining myself to people who don't like my reviews, I guess some clarification is in order.

1. I am 100% against criticism for works of art. Art is subjective, meaning reviews are irrelevant. The observer's opinion is only relevant to the observer. It is my belief that regardless of what others might say, I have to experience the art for myself.

2. I read upwards of 20 books a month. The $10/month I spend on K U, feels like I am cheating the authors. But since I can't afford 20 books a month if I were to purchase them directly, all I can offer is a positive review. That leads us to the final point.

3. If I get to the end of a book, then it was worth my time. I give those books 5 stars because it helps the author get exposure. That is the only reason I write reviews at all.

I understand that people are people and they are going to do what they do regardless of my stance. I know the way that I review books upsets some people. I am sorry they feel that way but as many have said, they will just ignore my review going forward. In fact, if you made it this far through my review, you should definitely read the book and completely ignore all of the reviews here. You are a much better judge of what you will like than anyone here.

Cheers

Michael: One man army

I'm very fond of this story. LitRPG, Wuxia, Time travel, humanity abducted by aliens into a tower of testing, complete with a system shop. So much to love. The intensity continues in this third volume. Michael has his plans for heading off many disasters that humanity suffered during his first incarnation. Cultivation is a light element this time. I have mixed feelings regarding how solo Michael was this time. His battles and missions were intense and intricate as he soloed battles that would normally require a large coordinated force. It was a dance of controlled violence of a veteran of many wars. Some of sequences went so long and with frequent bouts of information and reminiscences of the first timeline that I lost some of the excitement. The author's notes after the book mentioned that he thought the explaining might have been too much. It was for me, but only slightly. I had a wonderful time reading this. Was pleased to see plugs for the LitRPG/GameLit facebook groups and for the LitRPG Podcast (where this review will be read). I definitely recommend this series. It compares well with Tao Wong's System Apocalypse, Michael Chatfield's 10 Realms, and the other return in time climb the tower series.

Excellent story marred by over explanation

I really like the story itself, it has phenomenal bones. I have two problems with it. First, the author over explains. Everything. The author admits it in his notes at the end of the book but he vastly underestimates how far he went. I could skip 5 pages and still not be at a point where the story was advancing. And this was throughout the whole book.

Secondly, and tied closely with my first issue is how the author chose to have his MC already have an answer and trump card to everything that happens in the book and series as a whole. Resulting in having to over explain and come up with an explanation for every new artifact that the MC pulls out of his hat and much more. This greatly robs drama and tension from the entire book.

I'd love to see the author unpaint himself from this corner and have the MC not have all the answers and actually have to struggle.

Otherwise this book is decent with an overarching story that really interests me as it's a unique concept and while frustrating to read at points it's decently enjoyable when the explanations and rationalizations don't kill your immersion. If the next book doesn't adequately tone these issues down I'll probably drop the series.

The story continues to shine

I had no idea this third installment came out already and bought the book as soon as I came across it. Needless to say I abandoned every other book I was reading just so I could focus purely on this one and it did not disappoint.

Our MC arrives to the second layer and to true form immediately starts working toward his next mission. He needs to prevent an assassination and a great disaster that would eventually lead to war between the races. He also takes steps to minimize the casualties of a plague. He's got all lot to get done in a shirt amount of time but his knowledge of the future helps him out things in place even if some of them have their own risks.

There are definitly scenes and introductions that I can't name since it should be a pleasant surprise if not too unexpected. Still it's something for you to look forward to.

I would reccomend this to anyone interested in fantasy, scifi and litrpg. If you liked the first two books then you will like this one as well so quit wasting time and read it now.

I know that not everyone will agree with me, but to each his own. I enjoyed every single second of reading this series and was hanging on the edge of my proverbial seat the entire time. The incredible attention to detail and thought provoking world that Mr Kerr built in these books was absolutely amazing. Pure Awesomeness in my humble opinion. This series was one of my very first LitRPG reads and I’ll be forever grateful to the author for the extraordinary effort he put in to creating it. Ive read several 2nd chance LitRPG series since this and none of them come even close to the realistic authenticity that the protagonist displays in planning his tactics. Every part of this series from beginning to the end of book three truly made me feel like I was a part of the main characters journey. The level of creativity and detail is second to none. I dearly hope one day he will decide to finish the story. Anyone with ADHD, like myself or presumably the author, will love this series like crazy.

I love the story and world in this series, but am so dissapointed with the needless over-explanations and massive use of deus ex machina. I see many others feel the same. The issues were apparent in the first two books, but the author takes it to another level in this one. This was the re-release, so I can't imagine how bad it was in the first release. I struggled reading this even though my interest in the world brought me through it. I had to skim quite a bit of the last 20-25% and when the author started the "alcohol incidence" I nearly lost my mind.

Also, by the way, how is every enemy so super powerful and almighty? Tone it down a bit. You don't need to have every step in power be an exponential or logarithmic increase to keep things exciting.

I continue to enjoy this series. The writing itself is a few notches higher than what you typically see in the gamelit/LitRPG genre, which is always good to see. The character feels like a real person with a real history instead of a generic placeholder with a snarky personality. The story is also fantastic with a myriad of subplots woven into the overall tapestry that unfolds over the course of the series.

Right in the middle of action it suddenly veers off to a tangent that stops the pace which further veers of to another tangent and most of it is just useless info.

It's still an okay series, could've been better but not the worse. It's not one I'd readily recommend but yeah, not the worse.

For this genre, it's slightly above average. For fantasy overall, it's pretty mediocre.

There are books that put emphasis on action and books that devote a lot of space to descriptions, but this volume is something else entirely: description of an action. I found it irritating and tiresome. I do not recommend this book.
