Jim Butcher is the author of the Dresden Files, the Codex Alera, and a new steampunk series, the Cinder Spires. His resume includes a laundry list of skills which were useful a couple of centuries ago, and he plays guitar quite badly. An avid gamer, he plays tabletop games in varying systems, a variety of video games on PC and console, and LARPs whenever he can make time for it. Jim currently resides mostly inside his own head, but his head can generally be found in his home town of Independence, Missouri.
Jim goes by the moniker Longshot in a number of online locales. He came by this name in the early 1990′s when he decided he would become a published author. Usually only 3 in 1000 who make such an attempt actually manage to become published; of those, only 1 in 10 make enough money to call it a living. The sale of a second series was the breakthrough that let him beat the long odds against attaining a career as a novelist.
Technically yes this super spoilerific but it mostly just confirms the guess anyone with half a brain had. It's not the missing story I'm looking for however. Good timing for me to be reading it now though. I've had changes sink in a bit. I've read two post Changes short stories (Aftermath, Bombshells). I'm looking for potentially missing stories but this is all I got and it's really the two bite brownies of Dresden.
You lose track of time, as the years go by. The things that seem significant, that rise above the rest, become your measure of its passage. And the longer you live, the more significant the event has to be to catch your notice.
This third microfiction from Jim Butcher.comis concurrent with the end of Changes and contains RADIOACTIVE-LEVEL SPOILERS for Changes and Ghost Story. The thoughts of one person, interrupted by another ... their conversation so full of implications and innuendo. This exemplifies the saying that just because a story is short doesn't mean it can't have impact.
Holy freaking jesus christ does this one hurt, and it's not even 1000 words.
Detailing the MASSIVE spoiler for the interconnected plots of Changes and Ghost Story, it details
don't click it, not unless you've read the books.
Anyway, it's a tiny bit, but damn does it hit like a bullet train, the pain in each character, how the POV is lying about how he feels to make himself feel better about what he's doing and the tiny bits of what comes of her.
Oh...dear god this was good. just goes to show that Butcher can get a good story out whether it's short fiction, Novella, Novel or this microfiction variant. Man's a freaking genius.
Definitely do not read this until after Ghost Story. I do love these little microfictions that Butcher posts - they’re not actual stories per-se, but they often give you a different perspective on an event in the stories.
Wow! These microfictions are BURNING THE HOUSE DOWN they are so FIRE! 1) i cant believe I never thought about the fact that Kincaide shot Harry in the chest, not the head 2) totally cray to think that it took actions by him, Ivy, Mab, AND Demonreach to keep his suicidal butt alive and 3) dang Im SO FRIGGIN SAD that Kincaide and Ivy arent teaming up anymore. I LOVE little girl Ivy, and although Im glad J.B. doesnt keep his characters stagnant, its hella hard to see her grow up (especially knowing what she will eventually have to do).
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
microfiction. Kincaid prepping after his call from DRESDEN for the end of Changes. The Archive's reaction and demand, knowing despite her power she cant order him not to do it. May have to go back to reread to see why chest is so impt.
So this whole story is a spoiler. I enjoyed it anyhow.
As with the other microfictions I’m going to adjust my 2020 goal since this is like 2 pages, but still marking read so my Dresden page on Goodreads is completely listed as Read.
This third microfiction from Jim Butcher.com is concurrent with the end of Changes but should definitely NOT be read until after Ghost Story. It was interesting to see the other point of view in the final event of Changes that gets filled in later from the protaganists in Ghost Story.
Overall, this super short story is one that brings tears to the eyes. Maybe not enough to cry, but if you don’t tear up a little bit I’d be surprised. Well done and emotionally impactful. I always wonder if there was an interaction here. Beware though of spoilers.
This is a good one, I gotta admit. Ivy and Kincaid have one of the most interesting relationships in the series, and Butcher does a good job spotlighting that here.
