“The lines that define monsters continue to blur.”
Space dragons... a fantasy come true. Where did they come from? Are they aliens? These and some more questions arise, adding more mystery and intrigue with their mind bending powers. A captivating SciFi/Fantasy story, with strong characters and fearsome dragons. Gritty, fast-paced and compelling, edgy dialogue, deep characters and non-stop action, accompanied by a shocking quest for justice. A solid SciFi fantasy offering! I highly recommend the series!

All that holds back the Galaxy’s first interplanetary war is a crew of repurposed criminals, an undercover agent, and a world-government trust fund baby. The Dogs of War. The books included are: Book 1: The Dragon Commander; Book 2: The Captain, The Billionaire Boat, and The Dragon Crusader; and Book 3: The Dogs of War. Below is a review of one of the books included in this set so you can see what’s available in this action-packed collection!

*** Reviewing “THE DOGS OF WAR” ***
Dawn Redding woke up startled until she realized she was enclosed in a tiny pod. She forced herself to calm down and try to think about how long she had been here and how far the explosion had flung her? She saw faces in her mind, but could not remember names. She went through screen after screen of data, trying to trigger memories. Finally in frustration, she slammed her head on the console… and woke to the dull red stone of a clay wall with a red drop of blood from her head. The pod had vanished from around her. The tiny red stone room surrounding her was both familiar and a mystery. A bed, toilet, and a door with no handles were crammed in the room with her. Looking through a small window, this building was on an island and a lake surrounded it. Beyond that was a dense forest. And above was the shimmering blue streak of the SkyLine -- she was on Mars!

Dawn called out of her prison cell and a voice warned her to be quiet or the “Coats” (nurses) would come. Was she in an asylum? The woman was Morgan and was the one who brought Dawn here. The interrogation she was put through to get information about the outlaw, Drogan, and about what happened on Mukurus led to her memory loss. Marcus Brass and two nurses entered the room. A syringe injected something that froze Dawn’s muscles, except for her lips so that she could still talk. Marcus pulled out another syringe with a black tar substance and injected it into her back. He told her she was Captain Dawn Redding: Patient 07 in the Slayer Program since the destruction of Mukurus eight months ago, and he told her with sympathy in his voice that the only way out of this program was to get through it!

Kalus Delphi and Sophia Brass, in training at the new Worlds Crisis Committee’s Earth Consulate, were bickering back and forth, Kalus taunting her while they waited for Captain Demitri “Demi” Alexander. Sophia was the niece of the Chairman of the WCC’s Outerworlds Outreach Program, Marcus Brass, and always acted like she was looking down her nose on people. So she was easy to rile up. She smugly thought that if it wasn’t for Captain Demi, former Blue Terra undercover specialist himself, recommending Kalus, he would not have made it this far. Kalus was the Arms Master and Sophia was the Artillery Specialist – both forming the perfect defense system, but they had to work together or it wouldn’t work. Then Kalus’ sister Lilia joined them. For the first time, the true serious nature of their mission weighed on them and each of the Dogs of War team felt the gravity of it like a stone in the pit of their gut. The four of them were the last hope for the Milky Way against the scaly scumbag enemy. Would they be enough? Could they be effective against such an enemy? And what would it mean if they failed . . .

This was a well-written, detail filled story that moved quickly along with a steady tension that kept the reader on edge to what might happen next. The characters were excellently portrayed by the way they interacted with others. It was easy to spot the heroes, the strong ones, who would have a big part to play in the upcoming crisis. There is a tie-in also to be made with Dawn, who was introduced in the opening of the story. Grab your copy and hang on for a wild adventure as this small team prepares for what lies ahead! Best of all, you have all of the books in one set for your reading enjoyment!

The Dragon Commander is a short enticing introduction to this interesting series where the stuff of fantasy becomes scifi aliens. Dragons in space. Not long enough to work up much of a plot, but just the right length to make the reader sympathize with the hero Drogan and his co-conspirator Machaeus. I was hooked as I finished part 1.

Rather than continue to follow Drogan, in The Captain, The Billionaire Boat, and the Dragon Crusader, all new characters are introduced. While, they do cross paths with Drogan, the Dragon Commander’s part became secondary, which was disappointing to me. Dawn Redding is the new heroine in this story of the hunt for the outlaw Dragon. As hinted at in part 1, there is much more at stake than the adversarial relationship between Humans and Dragons. Not clear is the intended end-game Macheaus envisions. Drogan plays the uncomfortable roll of go-between/spy/marauder.

In The Dogs of War, yet another cast of characters is involved. Drogan and Dawn continue to play roles while Mr. Powerful Marcus Brass sends his Pawns to root out Dragons while expanding the Skyline. In book 3, there is another ‘D’ character: Captain Alexander Demitrius – Demi. Brass becomes the autocrat you don’t trust. Demi and his motley Dogs of War become their heroic bests in their attempts to defend humanity from the Dragons. But all the while, Macheus still has his agenda. And, if you are human, you won’t like it. Most likely.

Skyline needs: 1) more editing. I don’t usually comment on editing, but I was distracted enough by odd sentences, that I do bring it up this time. 2) A core set of characters. Drogan is the singular fascinating character and books 2 and 3 would have been better if his role had been greater and more central. 3) A focus. I say this because you think that the focus is the saving of humanity, but then Machaeus throws a major shift into the works. Trying to avoid spoilers I will say I felt like the author sympathized with Machaeus. If so, make him a bigger part of the story. 4) More explanation of the Skyline. I found myself drifting without a spacesuit every time the book talked about the outside deck of a ship. 5) Less sex. It was all pretty much gratuitous and did not lead to any happily ever afters.

Despite my critiques, I found the overall story line fascinating. The bundle is billed as ‘the epic first half of the SkyLine Series book set’. I would not call it epic, but I think it has the potential to be so. Who says Dragons did not originate from another galaxy? Maybe that is why we don’t see them on Earth these days. The futuristic Skyline technology is an interesting space travel method, though it does seem limited. Perhaps, the second half of the series will have humanity advancing even more. And Machaeus, whose reach across the stars gives him a god-like persona, has the potential and inclination to re-shape the galaxy as we know it. Will he? Should he?

Skyline bundles three books in the series loosely tied together by the ongoing Humans Vs. Dragons plot that begins in book 1 and ends with in book 3 with some unresolved issues. Yes, a cliffhanger. 3.5 stars. rounding up for review sites.
