Richard Ammon taught children's literature at Pennsylvania State University and lives in Middletown, Pennsylvania, not far from the Valley Forge National Historical Park. He is the author of Conestoga Wagons; An Amish Year; An Amish Wedding, and An Amish Christmas.
Over the course of a year, the reader follows Anna and her family through their day-to-day lives. Chapters cover the usual topics of school, church, and home life, as well as each season, the school picnic, and the Pennsylvania Dutch language. While the book itself feels dated, the information is solid. I’ve read other books on the Amish and I found this one contained many small details I didn’t realize I wanted to know until I read them. I also enjoyed reading the songs, poems, games, myths, recipes and other assorted information scattered throughout.
Brief but interesting- it was geared towards kids but I picked it up because I wanted to know more about the Amish. Very cool. They have great values :)
My boys and I are doing a project this summer trying to read through the Dewey Decimal System. So I picked this book as one of my 900s. We also have more and more Amish families moving into our area, and I wanted to know more about my neighbors. This book is written from the point-of-view of an Amish girl and follows her through her typical day.
