About the author

Eleanor Alice Burford, Mrs. George Percival Hibbert was a British author of about 200 historical novels, most of them under the pen name Jean Plaidy which had sold 14 million copies by the time of her death. She chose to use various names because of the differences in subject matter between her books; the best-known, apart from Plaidy, are Victoria Holt (56 million) and Philippa Carr (3 million). Lesser known were the novels Hibbert published under her maiden name Eleanor Burford, or the pseudonyms of Elbur Ford, Kathleen Kellow and Ellalice Tate. Many of her readers under one penname never suspected her other identities.

Me ha gustado la novela, aunque no ha sido de las mejores novelas históricas que he leído.
Demasiada descripción de los palacios y sus riquezas, Y en cuanto a la vida de la favorita del rey, fue bastante normal, sin muchos altibajos.

A typically engaging story from Jean Plaidy: a tale filled with compassionate, sympathetic characters, plenty of intrigue at the royal court, and a large dollop of suspense thrown into the mix. All of this makes for a thoroughly enjoyable read and, in my mind, another winner from an author with a great track history.

The subject of the narrative this time around is Madame du Barry, mistress to the French King Louis XV during the turbulent years of the 18th century. Her story is a rags-to-riches tale in which a woman's natural beauty makes her one of the most powerful figures in the whole of a kingdom, but of course there's a sting in the tale that those familiar with the events of the French Revolution will no doubt already know. No matter - this remains relevant and engaging throughout in any case.

Once again I'm left feeling delighted at Jean Plaidy's sheer readability and her ability to make the reader flick through the pages at speed. Forget the stereotype of stuffy historical novels and instead enjoy a vibrant, vivid world brought to a very real life.

I loved it. I have read another book on her, a non-fiction book, and this book doesn't bring her true start into it but who cares. It still shows that she is not the woman that is portrayed so much in other books and movies. She truly was a woman who cared about others and brought true joy to the aged King. Read it and you will find you have a warmth and respect for the woman that she truly deserves.

This is the first book I have read with du Barry as the focus. She usually makes an appearance in books about Marie Antoinette, but here she is centre stage. And this allows her to be shown in a different light. Here is is shown in a sympathetic light, rather than as a grasping courtesan. In this book she is lifted from a life amongst the poor, and eventually finds her way to the bedchamber of Louis XV. She is than able to help people, those that have been kind to her, and those poor people that seek her help when none other would lift a finger. But still, her position as mistress, and her sham marriage to a penniless Count, marks her as a member of the nobility and a women that has lived a rich lifestyle with dazzling jewellery, sumptuous gowns, and never more a pang of hunger. So when the French Revolution comes to town, the rolling storm of hate is bound to engulf her.[return][return]It is a short quick read, which leads me to want to read more about this women. But it did feel a bit light and rushed, and is not up to the standard of the better Jean Plaidy books that I have read.

I've read several other fiction and non-fiction works covering this period of France's history but this is the first book I've encountered to feature Madame Du Barry as the lead character.

Although this is a novel, Jean Plaidy was known for thoroughly researching her subject matter. Therefore, on the basis that much of what is fictionalised here is founded on truth, Madame Du Barry strikes me as a beauty with the personality and kindness to match.

In other books, Madame Du Barry is usually portrayed as an empty-headed slut, or at least as a dislikeable woman. This isn't the case here. It's hard to not like her and feel sympathy when things don't go her way.

I knew how she died before reading this. I won't spoil it for anyone who doesn't know, but I for one feel she deserved a much better end.

Regarding the story itself, I enjoyed it on the most part. It's not one of Jean Plaidy's greatest works, but it's very good nevertheless.

La amante poco soberbia

Está reseña la he titulado así por que este libro nos muestra la vida e historia de Jeanne Du Barry que fue amante de un rey de Francia.

No os podéis imaginar lo que me ha costado leer y pronunciar mentalmente su nombre pero esa es otra cuestión que no viene al caso, lo que sí es que en la sipnosis nos cuenta la interesante y difícil vida de esta mujer pero no es así.

Y es que... Tiene lo que se puede decir una vida sin mucho altibajos, si se dedico primero a la prostitución pero realmente no era prostituta sino como una especie de dama de compañía o algo así, y después de eso querida del rey entonces por eso no me ha parecido que tuviera una vida llena de intrigas y tal.

Solo añadir por último que se ve un poco del carácter de Maria antonieta con respecto a ella y la trataba muy mal mientras que ella incluso en el final fue buena con ella, eso y el final poco merecido de la pobre ha sido lo que no me ha gustado del libro pero claro eso ha pasado de verdad y no se puede cambiar y no se puede decir si gusta o no como si se lo hubiera inventado alguien.

Había leído otras obras de Jean Plaidy que me gustaron más. Quizás ha sido que algunos pasajes de este libro se dedicaron más a detallar la opulencia de Versalles (que no está mal, sobre todo para entender parte del por qué de la revolución de 1789) que en narrar la historia de Madame du Barry.

Me hubiera gustado que detallara más las intrigas políticas y la habilidad política de Jeanne Bécu pues el personaje la retrata como una mujer noble de corazón, de gran belleza y con una pizca de suerte política.

Sin embargo, no deja de ser un relato interesante sobre todo para salir de las historias de Maria Antonieta o de los Miserables. Siempre hay más partes de la historia.

Lamentablemente sé muy poco de la vida de Madame Du Barry, sólo lo que mencionan en biografías de María Antonieta, y pues no puedo saber qué partes de la novela son ficción o no. Sin embargo, disfruté mucho leerla y conocer más sobre Du Barry.

Este es el primer libro que leo de Jean Plaidy, quien en realidad se llamaba Eleanor Burford, pero también utilizaba el seudónimo de Victoria Holt y un montón más. La señora escribió más de doscientas novelas históricas y yo creía que sus seudónimos eran escritoras diferentes, jajaja. Sin duda buscaré más libros suyos.

Luis XV se ve envuelto por la belleza y encantos de una mujer, Jeanne no se encuentra dentro de las exigencias para convertirse en la favorita del rey, a pesar de esto y justo por su filosofía de vida Madame Dubarry se convierte no solo en la mejor compañía del rey si no en una fuerte influencia política y social en la época.
Fatidico final.
Lo leí hace 20 años y hoy lo disfrute de mejor manera.

No soy de novelas históricas pero esta la verdad me atrapó, la pluma de la escritora es muy detallada y te deja enganchada con lo que pasará a continuación.

Jeanne Du Barry es un personaje único, aún cuando lo tenía todo en su momento siempre tuvo su lado humilde y buscó ayudar a todo aquel que lo necesitara, su final sin duda fue injusto.

Una muy atrapante novela histórica sobre la famosa favorita real, opacada por la más famosa Madame de Pompadour. Bastante rigurosidad histórica y un poco de benevolencia al retratar al personaje principal, seguramente porque le agrada a la autora.

Novela histórica que narra la vida de una mujer que lucha contra la pobreza en diversos empleos pero por su destacada belleza llega a ser la amante del rey de Inglaterra, sustituyendo a Madame Pomapdeur que había fallecido, venciendo en la corte, el odio de sus adversario y ganándose el amor de muchos otros. La prosa es sencilla y muy amena, narra una historia real que la hace más interesante. Deja un mensaje de cómo la ostentación y riqueza puede cegar a los seres humanos, mientras otros carecen de lo más elemental. Es una novela recomendable como toda las de este tipo de esta autora.

Pocas vidas más ricas y esplendorosas, más trágicas y miserables que la de Jeanne, condesa Du Barry, hija natural de un monje. Desde muy joven, su singular belleza y sus aspiraciones parecían anticipar tanto su ascenso social como el modo de lograrlo: se trasladó a París, donde se inició en la prostitución hasta que se convirtió en amante de Jean du Barry, un escalón para llegar a la meta más elevada que podría soñar: convertirse, previa boda con el hermano de su anterior amante, en la favorita de Luis XV.
