1st Shock, Schock Sister Mysteries, by Misty Evans and Adrienne Giordano

1st in a series.
Alternating chapters told in first person present tense.
A forensic reconstruction sculptor and a forensic psychologist set of sisters own an investigation firm. They take on cold cases many as probono. In this story the sisters investigate a potential serial killer.

The two sister have distinctive personalities and methods of working making their depth a core element throughout the building tension. The steady pace amps up to frantic and anxious near the end. The last page leads directly to the next case / book for the sisters.

I enjoyed this mystery and look forward to more of the sisters investigations.

Side note: The original mention of one of the sisters wearing Louboutins made me think “privileged”. Does the average female FBI agent have the money to spend on designer brands? The later described reason of a coping mechanism and that she donates money and time sounded like a way to equalize their status back to the average middle income family. I feel the explanation fell short. Either own it or don’t include the thing you need to beg forgiveness for later.

Misty Evans and Adrienne Giordano always make an impressive pairing and 1st Shock, the first book in their new Schock Sisters series, is the perfect example of how well their work blends.
One was an FBI profiler. One was an FBI forensic artist. Now these sisters have brought those special talents to their own private investigation agency. They not only help law enforcement identify unknown victims and help catch the killers, they reunite living families. In 1st Shock, we get to see them working on both kinds of cases. Naturally the serial killer, who targets the sisters when they tie the style of the murder of the new victims to a killer they have already captured, is the more exciting tale but both are fascinating.
Perfect for fans of Iris Johansen, but not quite as dark as her books with a bit of humor to provide some balance and they get to work with the living sometimes!
I requested an ARC from Misty Evans, as I do whenever I get the chance. Who wouldn't want to read any of her books as early as possible? I will be buying a personal copy as soon as it is available and look forward to spending more time with Schock sisters, Meg and Charlie, and with Matt and JJ. IF you are already a fan these two awesome authors, you might remember meeting Matt and the Schock sisters in Missing Justice, Matt and Taylor's story.

What an amazing start to a new series!

Meg and Charlie Schock are sisters who have combined their talents to form their own all-female Private Investigators agency. Meg is a former FBI elite forensic sculptor creating faces from bones. Charlie is a former FBI Profiler. They specialize in cold cases and missing persons. especially those that the FBI have been unable to solve.

When the local US attorney brings her the skull of a brutally murdered young woman, Meg spots the MO immediately. She's seen this killer's work before. But he is still in prison .. so is there a copy-cat out there?

More buried bodies are unearthed and the two sisters, along with the US Attorney and an employee, also an investigator, start digging into these old cases.

When the killer turns his attention to their receptionist, who looks eerily like the first victims, it becomes a cat and mouse game. It gets deadly when he targets the sisters.

The suspense starts almost immediately and maintains a high level throughout. Fast-paced action is surrounded by twists and turns that lead to a surprising . and explosive ... conclusion. The characters are solidly drawn. I loved how the sisters interact .. with, love, humor, and sometimes sarcasm. I also enjoyed the blistering attraction between Charlie and JJ ... the US Attorney. There is no cliff-hanger .. but ... a new case on the horizon that looks to be expanded on in the next book. No waiting ... Books 2 and 3 are readily available. I can hardly wait to read the further adventures of these great characters.

First off, the cover gave me MASSIVE pause on this as it states it's the Shock Sisters whereas inside the book and descriptions on every website refer to them as the Schock Sisters. If the publisher can't get the cover right, it isn't too promising !!
I stuck with it as far as 32% but it's really more tailored to the YA lot, I reckon. Considering the sisters are grown adults and no idiots (both have high intelligence-required careers) they do come across as taking very little very seriously. One is always yattering on about the other needing protecting all the time like she was twelve years old and the other is into a lot of new-age hippified codswallop. Plus each sister takes it in turns doing the narrating and I found that a bit confusing as the chapters are short ones, so I had to keep flipping back to see who was talking.
Gender confusing needed a hyphen, there are too many needlessly added commas, they wrote complements and not compliments and scraps not scrapes.
She made mention of someone picking their own engagement ring and it being better that way and I agree......unless you're Kate Middleton, of course !!
I got to the line, ".....I give him my resting bitch face" (which could also do with a hyphen) and I packed it in. The idea was good if they had acted like grown-ups but this was all a bit too juvenile.

Two sisters hunting a serial killer what's not to like about this first in a series book? It had humor, a subtle side romance and I liked the action throughout the book as well as the mystery build up. It was well structured and I've since added books two and three onto my tbr. I honestly preferred Meg over Charlie, but both characters were good and I'm intrigued to see how the rest of the series goes. 4.5 ⭐

This book had me hooked from the start. I have my degree in criminal justice and love shows like Criminal Minds. 1st Shock was an awesome story and I didn't want to put it down. The Schock sisters' knowledge of a previous killer as well as the cold cases they are working on lead them toward a potential serial killer. This book was exciting and had elements of suspense and romance in addition to being a psychological thriller. I can't wait to read book 2.

I bought this book and am voluntarily sharing my honest review.

1st Shock by Misty Evans and Adrienne Giordano was a stellar beginning to this new series by the authors.I had previously "met" Meg and Charlie Shock in MISSING JUSTICE by Ms. Evans and Ms. Giordano and wanted to know more about them so I was thrilled to see this new book.

The pace of the story is quick with so many curves that I hardly had time to guess who the serial killer was. This book has everything that I look for in a suspense novel - relatable and unique characters, strong relationships and a thrilling conclusion. I was totally engaged from the first page until the end. I know there will be more as this one did end with a small cliff hanger that already has my interest. More, please.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. All of the above opinions are my own.

The beginning was interesting and had promise, but the continual flipping between 1st person perspective of the sisters became confusing. I had to keep checking who was talking.
By the 60% mark I threw in the towel. The sisters were both too emotionally involved in the case to be real. They are supposedly professionals but they don't eat or sleep and HAVE to keep going to catch the bad guy because no one else can solve it fast enough. The victims have been dead for years and one sister is having a nervous breakdown because the cases weren't solved yesterday. The sisters would have burnt out long ago at that rate.

1st Shock: Schock Sisters Mystery, Book 1
Adrienne Giordano, Misty Evans

I love when characters from another series (Justice Team) get their on series. The quirky sisters, Charlie and Meg, use their quirks to hunt for a serial killer they thought they had already caught. With the help of JJ and Matt they immerse you in the case from the beginning to the end. Trying to figure out with them ‘who-done-it’ keeps you reading nonstop to the end.
The Schock sisters are definitely ones who keep you wanting more. Strong women and their friends in a world of evil fighting for the victims.

Have definitely found new authors to binge read!

Found this book via Bookbub and decided to give it a try. I’m so glad I did. I’ve now discovered two new authors and numerous series to binge read!

This first book in a spin off series is a taught thriller with romance undertones. Meg and Charlie are sisters who run and Investigation Agency. Meg is a forensic artist who does reconstructions and Charlie is a former FBI agent and a forensic psychologist and profiler. They work on cold cases, often getting referrals from police and FBI. The case in this book comes from a US Attorney (and the aforementioned romance for Charlie) JJ. We also meet Matt, another investigator in their agency. Those four form the core of this storyline though there are references to characters from another series that this one is spun off from.

The case revolves around a serial killer. The story arc moves at a good pace and the suspense ratchets up nicely. I think I held me breath and had a speeding pulse for the climatic scene, made that much more intense because you can anticipate it happening and are yelling at the characters not to do what they are doing.

Meg and Charlie are interesting characters. I really like Charlie and while she is written as the take charge, kick ass sister she is humanized by the cracks we see in this tough guy personality. Meg, the artist is more emotional. This takes a huge toll on her mentally and at several points throughout the story I kept thinking “this work is not for you honey.” If the series is to continue the authors need to get her into some good therapy because her reactions here say that she is not long from a serious breakdown. At a couple points in the story her behaviors were such that I found it irritating and unbelievable which interfered with my enjoyment of the book. I think I’m just not that empathetic, and prefer my female protagonists to be badass, so that may just be my reaction.

The end of the book build right into the next book which I will definitely be reading. Strongly recommend.

The idea of a forensic sculptor appealed to me, and in a business with her sister who is a profiler really sounded interesting. Yes, we got some of what they do, but a real emotion filled telling, repeatedly, by both sisters. Each chapter, the other sister telling the story. Didn't find the resolution interesting.

Well written shorter crime investigation/romance novel, obviously setting up a series. Points of view from both Charlie and Meg - sisters who investigate both cold and active cases. I felt in some parts it was rushed, but I did like it overall. There was a serial killer and a couple of action scenes. 3.5 stars.

1st Shock by Adrienne Giordano & Misty Evans
Schock Sisters Mystsery #1

Excellent new series that finished with the bad guy caught but left me eager to pick up the second book as soon as it is available! I loved Charlie and Meg and the sisterly bond they share. The fact that they both ended up working together to solve cold cases, put faces and names to the unknown, catch bad guys and solve other mysteries was interesting. Their love for one another is obvious throughout the book and it is nice to see and also reminds me of my bond with my sister...though we do NOT solve murder mysteries ;) Meg and Charlie are not cut from the same mold but both are bright, focused, capable and willing to do what it takes to find justice for their “clients”.

What I liked:
* The bond between the sisters
* JJ Carrington – he is a nice addition though he has an issue he really should get taken care of...and Charlie can hardly wait till he does so!
* Matt: the man who works with them that is a bit like a little brother
* There were other supporting characters – would like to get to know them more as the series progresses
* The way the story is told by Charlie and Meg in alternating chapters
* The plotting and mystery held till late in the book as to who the serial murderer was

What I didn’t like:
* Only what I was meant not to – the bad guys, of course ;)

Did I enjoy this book? YES!
Would I like to read more in the series? Without a doubt

Thank you to the authors for the ARC – This is my honest review.

I rate this 3.5 out of 5 stars. *Spoilers ahead.*

This book seemed shorter than I expected, but maybe that was due to my enjoyment. Once the killer was revealed, the story picks up and doesn't stop. The plot follows two sisters, Charlie and Meg Schock, each with extensive FBI and forensics experience, who have now formed their own private investigation firm. Their case takes them on a hunt for a serial killer, but they are led to believing that the man responsible is already in prison.

It was a fast but thrilling read, and the writing was straightforward enough and didn't get bogged down in unnecessary details. The story was split between Charlie and Meg's POVs, and I favored Charlie's a little more. Meg made some questionable decisions, being the more emotional sister, but I didn't find her unbearable. The Schock sisters do have a suspiciously high number of convenient contacts (law enforcement, district attorney, FBI, etc.), but I guess that's just the name of the game.

The pacing seemed almost too fast, but I won't really complain about that since most other books I read take hundreds of pages of backstory to get moving. At the end of the book was an excerpt for the next one which piqued my interest, and should I have the time I would not mind returning to this series.

Sisters, so different in personalities and skills, but both are determined to find justice for the victims that can no longer fight for themselves.

Meg, a forensic sculptor, gets so focused on rebuilding a lost soul from what little she has that she loses track of everything else. Such is the case for Emily, as she calls her, a woman she's previously reconstructed but not solved her murder, then another woman is discovered and brought to her for help, eerily killed in the same way.

Meg and Charlie, the owners of Schock Investigations, begin digging deep, no pun intended, and start unraveling the clues as to the two women's demise, and they can't help but wonder if there are more. But is the man guilty of these heinous crimes already behind bars? Or is he still roaming free, able to continue his madness?

Will Meg and Charlie solve all the murders? Or will they get caught between the killer and justice?

One-click now and follow along as these two talented and brave sisters solve the cases no one else can. I can't wait to read the second book and see who they help next. Loving this series!

Two sisters working together to get justice for the victims of violence. Meg Schock ,a forensic sculptor, and Charlie, a forensic psychologist and profiler, run an investigation firm. They feel strongly about solving cold cases. I liked that the sisters were passionate about what they did. Each of these women has a powerful and distinctive personality. I was impressed by how well they understand each other. I felt that they made a dynamic team. When JJ, the US Attorney for the District of Columbia, brings them another victim. He puts them on the trail of a vicious serial killer. Can they stop him? 1st Schock is the beginning of a new series by Misty Evans and Adrienne Giordano. It pulled me in and wouldn't let go. The characters are compelling. The story is suspenseful and filled with mounting tension. I wanted answers and to see justice triumph. I am anxious to see what is next for Meg and Charlie.

The first of a series by the team of 2 sisters, one of whom is a forensic psychologist and profiler, the other a forensic sculptor. They have their own private investigation company. They are looking for a serial killer, and as I have stated before, I don’t usually read books about serial killers. They give me nightmares; however for Brenda Novak and now the team of Misty Evans and Adrienne Giordano, I will read about serial killers! This one was a good start to this series. I have read all the Justice series books by these authors, and the Schock Sisters have been mentioned in those books. Meg, the sculptor and Charlize (Charlie), the profiler are two bada** Sisters, both with FBI training. They still gave me a fright. I worried about them the whole book, and of course, I knew they would fine, still...... very enjoyable or in my case, frightening, but I read it all in one sitting! Think those who like thrillers will thoroughly enjoy!

What a great first book in a new series. If you like mysteries and suspense then you will love this book. Meg and Charlie Shock have their own agency. Charlie is a forensic psychologist and Meg is a forensic sculpture. I can’t imagine working with cold cases of dead people. Meg is so sensitive and becomes involved with the dead people she sculptures. Charlie is more in control of her emotions except when she is around JJ the US Attorney for the District of Columbia.

There are dead bodies starting to pop up all over. It looks like there may be a serial killer out there. It is so exciting how Meg and Charlie get involved using their expertise to help with solving the cases. How safe are they? I was on the edge of my seat at times. I loved the book and strongly encourage you to read it. I was given a copy of the book and voluntarily wrote a review.

A great start to this new series. I really liked Charlie and Meg. Everyone thinks that Charlie is the tough one, but Meg is pretty tough. She seems fragile, but has a spine of steel when the occasion calls for it. Meg is reconstructing a skull when she realizes that there might be a serial killer. As they start investigating, they are very sure there is a serial killer. His style is similar to a man who is already in prison. Did he have a protege? They realize that the killer knows they are looking for him and that their lives are in danger. Will they find him before he finds them?

I didn't like the way this was written. It seemed to just be delivering facts and explaining emotions rather than feeling like they really belonged to the character. I did appreciate the story line though, so I will probable give this series another try.

Something missing in the story

The two sisters are fully on display, private and public. Not sure what mystery is about them. On the other hand, the cold cases that they are working on are not as deep as the sisters’ private life. The cold cases are like sisters’ makeup.

A lot of action

A lot of action and a little romance carried by a somewhat rough plot which reminded me of many other books. Not bad, not great, still worth reading for the character development.

I was a fan of Misty Evans' other two series, so I had high hopes for this one. Unfortunately, I was greatly disappointed. 1st Shock follows sisters, Meg and Charlie, as they try to solve cold cases that are handed to them by the FBI. We previously met them in the Justice Team series, where they were minor characters. I tried really hard to get through this book but there was so much wrong with it.

The Plotline The story had an interesting premise. A dead girl is found along the DC beltway; they backtrack and realize other victims were found around the same area, indicating a possible serial killer. This was a great idea; I could easily get behind it. The problem is that the story just meandered aimlessly and it was incredibly hard for me to care when it was quite clear that nothing was really happening. On top of that, there was a lot of telling and very little showing.

The POVs A lot of books switch between the leads' POVs and I have no issue with that. But for some reason, it didn't work for this book. Idk if it was because of the first person POV or because of how the characters were written, the story would've been better served with a third person POV style.

The Characters I'm just come right out and say it: the sisters didn't need a book. They weren't that interesting when they came on canvas in the Justice series and their lacklusterness carried over into this book. Meg was a neurotic weirdo that got uncomfortably attached to their dead victims and Charlie was a ball buster with no other redeeming qualities.

Overall Lackluster storyline. Unremarkable, boring characters that didn't need a book. This story could've been kept. DNF, 1 star.

I have found this year for me has been the year of reading mysteries and thrillers. The other thing I have been trying to do for 2023 is to clear my Kindle of my older reads and this week, one of those reads was 1st Shock. I haven't read anything of these authors before, but this was a fun read and in ways reminded me of a cross between Bones with Temperance Brennan and TV shows like Criminal Minds with the profiling and then Rizzoli and Isles as the dynamic between the sisters reminded me of Jane and Maura. In 1st Shock we are introduced to the characters Meg Shock who is a forensic sculptor and an empath Charlie Shock who used to work for the FBI as a profiler and Matt who is their investigator and hands-on guy, we also have Haley - their receptionist who is studying Criminology. JJ who is an FBI agent has brought the girls a case, as he needs some help identifying a few skulls. This leads Charlie to Mickey - a serial killer, she helped put away five years ago. The thing is though that this latest victim is too fresh to have been killed by Mickey but it matches his MO perfectly. Have the girls got a copycat on their hands? Can they solve the crime before one of them finds themselves right in the crosshairs of the serial killer? Find out in the first book of this great forensic crime/thriller 1st Shock by Misty Evans and Adriana Giordano. I am excited to now read Book #2 as the preview at the end of this book, made it exciting.
