Returning home to Grand Junction would not have been Rosie Perkins’ first choice, but with her mother no longer able to take care of herself, it’s the only one she has. As is working the night shift at a local hotel to bring in a much-needed income. Rosie juggles to keep all the pieces of her life together and has no room to add anything more. One morning after a long shift, when she witnesses a hotel guest crash into a dumpster, her careful control starts to unravel.
Security specialist, Jake Hutchinson, has his hands full protecting the arrogant lead actor of a movie being filmed in town. Since the production company and crew arrived at the hotel, the entitled star has been nothing but trouble. The only thing that can improve his mood is the occasional nightly glimpse of the redheaded housekeeper.
Until he finds himself trapped between desire and duty.
USA Today bestselling author Freya Barker loves writing about ordinary people with extraordinary stories. Driven to make her books about 'real' people; she creates characters who are perhaps less than perfect, each struggling to find their own slice of happy, but just as deserving of romance, thrills and chills in their lives.
Recipient of the ReadFREE.ly 2019 Best Book We've Read All Year Award for "Covering Ollie, the 2015 RomCon “Reader’s Choice” Award for Best First Book, “Slim To None”, and Finalist for the 2017 Kindle Book Award with “From Dust”, Freya continues to add to her rapidly growing collection of published novels as she spins story after story with an endless supply of bruised and dented characters, vying for attention!
Grant in a tent—I would give good money to see that. “Sweetheart,” he starts in complete diva mode, waving his hand up and down the front of his body. “See this six foot six frame of carefully honed muscle, coated in a rich coat of cocoa, polished and waxed to a perfect shine? This here body will not stuff itself in any sleeping bag, it does not fit in any tent, it is not intended for rough terrain, and it does not find the idea of peeing in a bush at all romantic.” He takes a deep drink of his beer, slams his empty bottle on the counter, and belches loudly, only adding to our hilarity, before he finishes. “This is a body designed for feather beds and the soft slide of twelve hundred thread-count, Egyptian cotton sheets. I’ll sleep in the wild when I’m dead.”
“With that scruff, he’s like catnip for soccer moms.” “Are you calling me a soccer mom?” she protests. “No. I’m calling him catnip.”
“I tried calling: no answer. I left a message: nothing. Finally I called your office—” He points a scathing look at Jake. “And threatened whoever was unfortunate enough to answer the phone, that I would sit on them, hold them down, and roll rubber bands through their chest hair until they’re as smooth as a baby’s butt— to get this damn address.”
For years I’d harbored the dream of a family, but eventually simply gave up even hoping. My fortieth birthday had been a come -to-Jesus moment when I felt I passed that invisible barrier between; it could still happen, and your ovaries now grow dust bunnies.
My Review:
With every new book she writes, I adore Freya Barker just a little more. She gives us everyday hard-working and well-seasoned heroes and heroines who have or are struggling with real-life issues and doing their best at jobs they may not enjoy but need to hold on to. Most of us have been there. And quite often doing those thankless jobs conflict with doing the right thing, which causes additional stress and dissatisfaction, lots of us have been there too.
Hit&Run broke ground for an action-packed new series with several busy, realistic, and compelling storylines and a full slate of uniquely interesting, likable, and relatable characters who labor away at relatively common jobs and are doing so with healthy servings of dignity as well as a side order of irreverent humor. And of course, I must not forget to mention the supportive and sensual romance that blossoms amid of all this intriguing peril and chaos.
All of Ms. Barker’s thoughtfully written books that I have read have been remarkably self-contained standalone stories that seamlessly interconnect with the others in their series. I am already eager for the next installment.
A new series on Bodyguards? Heck yes! Jack is part of the security detail for a movie production filming in town. They have rented out the second floor of the hotel that Rosie is working nights cleaning the hotel. Things get a bit dicey when Rosie witnesses something she shouldn't have.
Rosie is 42, single and came home to take care of her mother that is suffering from Alzheimer's. She has to work the night shift so that she can be home to take care of her mom during the day. Her money goes to the care of her mother who does nothing but belittle her when she is in her right mind. To say the least, her life is not full of sunshine.
Jake is 38, lost his parents when he was young and didn't find a family until he was in his teens. He enlisted in the army right out of high school and like many former military, he struggles with guilt over what happened while he was enlisted. He doesn't really know how a relationship should work but his connection to Rosie proves he doesn't need to know. All he cares about is protecting her from the danger that seems to be following her.
One of the things I love about this author is that her characters are so real. They have everyday problems they deal with and seeing how a romance growing in a real way is very appealing. Plus, her characters are usually a bit older and more mature. Like many of her other books, this one had me completely engrossed with Jack and Rosie's life. I loved it and can't wait for the next in the series!
Well let me start this out with I don't know how to rate this book. The writing is flawless the characters performed their part and the narration was excellence. I know I'm not going to make friends with this post but I was WHAT THE HECK the whole book. I was waiting for everyone to do the right thing, you know be the hero and all. What happened to upstanding do the right thing even if ? OMG the poor homless man. I read a bunch of reviews and this didn't bother anyone? I KNOW this is a pretend book but I was waiting for something that didn't happen. Please if there is one other person that reads this book and agrees with me, let me know. Yes, read this book it's good, I love Ms Barker. This just did not work for me plot wise.
DNF I think the timings to start this one was not good. That's why almost everyone enjoyed it alot whereas I was struggling to get through every chapter. My bad.
This is the first book I’ve read by Freya Barker. I don’t believe it will be my last, provided I can find the time to read everything I want to read. While there is so much to discuss in this story, I want to focus on only a few points.
The two main characters are compelling and relatable.
In Rose, you’ve got an innocent, unsuspecting woman who sees something she wasn’t supposed to see and suddenly this puts her in danger. She is a character the reader immediately relates to because she is your average, overworked, underpaid, 40 something single woman who’s hopes and dreams were never realized because life happened. When I say life, I mean the ailing health of her mother who never thought too highly of her in the first place.
In Jake, you’ve got a military veteran with an unspeakable past who has chosen to cope with life as a civilian by turning to a big-time, family-owned private security firm. Things are going well in this firm until their key client does something he shouldn’t have done. In protecting the client, he finds himself hopelessly drawn to Rose.
In Grant, you have Rose’s best friend, confidant, and coworker who is a flamboyant, large gay black man. I love this character, and a lot of his lines are funny and don’t seem contrived at all. But, I do fear they do toe the line between being a little too cliche. In some sense, he plays a form of comic relief to Rose’s tragic character. He also served to push her beyond her tragic situation and go for what she most desperately needs while reminding her to proceed with caution. He also reminds her of all of the things that make her exceptional attractive, and I am not just referring to her physical traits.
The overarching conflict in this story is compelling.
I touched upon this a little in my character descriptions, but I’ll go a little further. Basically, Rose is tracked by an unknown assailant out to silence her, even though she has literally said nothing of what she has seen. What first begins as an assignment to keep Rose safe, because a struggle for Jake to keep things professional. I won’t go into detail how this works out. But, I will say, Rose definitely has her eyes for Jake. So, there are two arcs occurring simultaneously: the sexual attraction turned beautiful romance and the ever-present danger of just staying alive.
Overall Plot
It unfolds in a smooth, natural way. There does seem to be a couple, with the most prominent being Jake rushing to see Rose because he realizes she is likely in danger. Then, he seems to forget about this completely and the reader is launched into a steamy sex scene. Later, Jake realizes he never told her about the danger. So, I’m left wondering how much of a military veteran and security professional Jake really is that he’s let himself turn to his most base desires for sex. But, that was the only point where I felt the story fell a little short in believability. Simply because I was lead to believe this danger to be so incredibly urgent that he had to rush to Rose, only for the two to wind up having sex.
A lot of stories end, then putter along for another twenty pages to wrap up the arc. When I got to the last 20% of the story, that’s what I thought Ms. Barker was doing. But I was pleasantly surprised by an unresolved conflict that worked itself out in the end. I say that, because I’d completely forgotten about the detail dropped so much early and so quickly. I was also pleasantly surprised that my own prediction was correct, though the reasons why it was correct was also a surprise.
Craft, style, etc.
Suddenly there are a bunch of books out for adults that are written in first-person present tense. When did that become a thing? For some reason, it works. Or, at the very least, Freya Barker makes it work exceptionally well. The present tense gives this story a sense of urgency, happening in the now feel. It also, in some ways, plays out like a film, even at the moments where we are getting into the character’s head.
This story is also told from alternating points of view between Rose and Jake. The voices are distinct from each other throughout, so it’s very clear who is speaking even without the subheading indicating it as belonging to Jake or Mary.
Regarding the employment of sex in the story.
I would describe it as poetic, rather than pornographic or erotic. It is an expression of love that does develop and build over the course of the story, culminating into something very beautiful in the final encounter.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Audiobook: Narrator - Tanya Eby and Patrick Zeller
Wow! I absolutely LOVED these two narrators together! They just totally worked for me, which I know audio is suggestive to each individuals likes and dislikes but this was a collaboration that did it for me. This was a great performance and both narrators gave so much life to the characters. Would love to hear more from them.
Nobody does mature romance like Freya Barker and this book is another perfect example of her talent!
”Love is equal parts bliss and torture – it’s passion and fear – and once discovered, it becomes as essential as breathing.”
I loved both Rosie and Jake. Their relationship was a little bit of a slow burn after an insta-attraction, which I loved. While they each had baggage from their past, they never really allowed it to interfere with what they were building between them. I expected Rosie to firmly push Jake away but what little bit she attempted was quickly diminished by his determination to learn more about her.
”The quiet, hardworking Rosie may have caught my attention, but this feisty and passionate version I’m getting to know, is holding it.”
Rosie was strong and independent yet insecure due to the way she was raised. Her enlightenment into being more than enough for Jake was beautiful and I loved that it didn’t take a huge wallop on her head to get her to that point. It was very real, very believable, and absolutely perfect.
While Jake wasn’t a chest thumping alpha hero, he was plenty protective and exhibited just enough grumpiness during jealous periods to keep me more than happy with his character.
”He wasn’t hiding me, or ashamed of me. Instead he marked me in front of everyone, including his own boss. If he’d have peed on me it couldn’t have been clearer.”
But his tender regard and care for Rosie was what really sold me on him. He wasn’t perfect, but he was perfect for her and in return that made him perfect for me.
This story revolves around one incident that leads into danger for Rosie resulting in a mystery that had me questioning everyone. I eventually tagged the bad guy, but I don’t think it had anything to do with my sleuthing skills and everything to do with this author giving me clues. But when I had my light bulb moment, let’s just say I was shocked at the potential twist. Ms. Barker does twists so well!
With some amazing secondary characters that I must have more of, some extremely steamy times as well as sizzling chemistry, and the most perfect epilogue ever, I hated to see this book end. It was a wonderful read and solidifies my belief that this author can do no wrong.

I was soooooo excited to see that one of my Unicorn Authors was starting a new series....and Hit&Run DID NOT disappoint in any way! This first book in the PASS series, is classic Freya Barker and it BLEW ME AWAY!!! I loved every single thing about it! Jake and Rosie are right up there with some of my fave characters from Freya! Their story is full of Freya's signature style...mature couples who have life experience, men who don't expect the "perfect" body and appreciate the curves (and bumps) of a more "seasoned" woman and he's VERY protective (read; ALPHA), with strong women, while both are usually dealing with some difficult, REAL and sometimes heart-breaking issues. all wrapped up in suspense and intrigue that has my heart pounding and brain trying to figure it all out. Jake and Rosie are all that and so much more!
Rosie has returned to Grand Junction to look after her Mom, who has Alzheimer's, even though her mother hasn't been the most supportive of her in her life (to say the least) She works as a hotel housekeeper on the night shift so she can care for her Mom during the day. Jake is a former military-now-security-specialist (bodygaurd/babysitter) who has been assigned to protect the obnoxious lead actor in a movie being filmed in Grand Junction, said movie crew are staying at the hotel where Rosie works. When Rosie witnesses an accident involving one of the hotel's guests, it puts her in danger...and puts her on Jake's radar, big time!!!
Hit&Run has all the heart, humor, suspense, intrigue and heat that I've come to expect (and LOVE) in a Freya Barker novel! I can't recommend this one, or ANY of Ms. Barker's books, highly enough!
Rosie and Jake!!! What a great older couple. Hit and Run is book 1 of Freya Barker new series PASS! It takes place in Grand Junction Colorado. Freya Barker's forte is older couples. She brings the heat without all the BS you get with a younger couple. Anytime I open a Freya Barker book, I KNOW I'm going to be entertained!!! 5 brilliant stars for the seasoned romance!
Forty-two-year-old Rosie is back at home to care for her mother, working the night shift at local hotel and barely getting by. The night shift has been more interesting since a filming crew along with the actors set up camp. Rosie and her best friend Grant are on the lookout for the lead actor, both drooling fans over him, but that all changes when Rosie witnesses him in a car accident. PASS, the protection detail assigned to the crew and actors find out about Rosie and Jake is assigned to take do damage control. They don’t want the truth to get out and spoil the production and ruin the project since it would put hundreds out of a job. Of course, sparks fly between Jake and Rosie even if neither really trust each other at first.
When it becomes apparent that someone wants to hurt Rosie, Jake makes it his business to protect her, and the attraction they’ve had brewing ignites into a passionate affair.
I’ve enjoyed Freya Barker’s Northern Lights series, but I have to say I wasn’t a huge fan of this plot, because covering up a hit and run because it would stop a movie production doesn’t sit well with me. It all worked out in the end, but for so long PASS was willing to do just about anything to keep the crime hidden.
Also, I wasn’t keen on Rosie’s mother at all! She was a piece of work. Always negative and mean to Rosie whenever she had lucid moment and apparently this is the way she treated Rosie even before she had dementia. Not a nice person. It bugged me that Rosie was pretty much just took this behavior for years without standing up for herself. I get family obligation, but I would’ve wanted to stick her in a home and let her fend for herself or at least stood up to her!
I did like the romance, and it was nice that it was with a mature couple, with Jake thirty-eight and Rosie forty-two. Jake was very protective and good to Rosie, and Rosie definitely deserved a happy ending.
I listened to the audio version which I highly recommend. Tanya Eby and Patrick Zeller did a fantastic job with both male and female voices, alternating between Rosie and Jake’s chapters. A copy was kindly provided in exchange for an honest review.
BIG smile on my face as I finished this book. I have always enjoyed this author’s books and this is no exception… :) I enjoyed every page of this book and am so happy that as the first book in the series I have more books to look forward to.
Rosie Perkins has come home to provide care for her mother who is suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease. The fact that her mother was NOT a loving caring nurturing parent does not keep Rosie from doing what she believes is the right thing. She has found a person to handle nights while she works as a housekeeper in a local hotel and does her best on limited funds to care for herself and her mother. Little does Rosie know that witnessing a car hit a trash bin while taking the trash out will put her in harm’s way.
Jake “Hutch” Hutchinson works for Protection and Security Services – PASS. He is not thrilled with the pretty boy entitled actor he is babysitting while a film is being made. The hotel the actors and crew are staying in just happens to be the one that Rosie works for so the two have seen one another around but don’t speak till Rosie becomes a witness PASS needs to keep an eye on. PASS is run by people he knows from his youth and the teach he works with are interesting indeed!
As the story unfolds it seems that Rosie has been targeted by someone and her life is in danger. The more time Jake invests keeping Rosie safe the closer the two grow to one another. Throw in Grant – a bigger than life black man who is looking for a man to love – and Rosie’s best friend... AND then the team that works with Jake AND Hilliary the nurse that cares for Rosie’s mother at night...AND the mystery of who is after Rosie and why AND a delicious romance...and well...you have a wonderful story that I thoroughly enjoyed. I am eager to read what comes next and wonder just which of the characters in this book will find their life partner in the next book.
Did I enjoy this book? Definitely! Will I read more in this series? Without a doubt!!!
Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.
Freya Barker packs a serious combination of suspense, heat and laugh out loud antics in this new series. Mature characters, complex storyline and lovable characters round out the first installment of the PASS series. When Hollywood invades Grand Junction, CO the PASS security team was on it. Providing all the security to the chaos on all the movie locations and hotel. Rosie was just doing her job. Working the Night shift at the local hotel “lucky” enough to house the star of the movie and its crew. What was unlucky was what she witnessed. Like she didn’t have enough on her plate providing care to her mother who has Alzheimers. She DID NOT need another burden on her soul. Jake is a loner. Doing the job he was hired to do. He was in no way looking for love. But there was something about the quiet red head that intrigued him. When Rosie is thrust in the middle and possibly the only witness to a horrible crime...Jake is torn. Does he do the job he was hired to do or protect the women he’s falling for? Nobody.....I mean NOBODY.....writes mature romantic suspense like Ms. Barker. Prepare to be wowed. Hit & Run checked every box for me.
Rosie Perkins has a minimum wage job cleaning a motel in Grand Junction. One night she witnesses a car hit and kill a homeless man. Jake Hutchison is a security specialist, hired to provide security for an out-of-control actor starring in a film shooting in Grand Junction. They have orders to do whatever is necessary to keep the film on track, even cover up the manslaughter of a homeless man. Interviewing the staff, Jake is convinced that Rosie knows something, but he is also convinced that she won't report anything to the police, but then it seems someone wants to kill Rosie to cover up the death.
I enjoyed the plot but I did struggle with Jake's morals (as I think he did), being willing to cover up a murder just to ensure a multi-million dollar movie stays on track seems morally bankrupt to me. Also, the way that Jake was willing to intimidate and threaten a woman in a precarious financial position was repugnant.
As you can tell, I struggled with this novel a bit in the beginning, but by the end I was drawn in as much as ever by the characters and the storytelling.
Yes, Freya Barker does it again. Awesome start to what I’m sure will be an amazing series. Rosie Perkins returns home to care for her sick mother. She works nightshift as a maid in a hotel. She’s juggling so many things and doesn’t have room for anything else in her life. Until one night she stumble upon a scene and then everything changes in her life. Jake Hutch works as a security agent at the PASS. He has protect a movie star who is an arrogant a$$. This book is just as i love. With a feisty heroine and a protective alpha. Lots of suspense and awesome side characters and I can’t wait to read more of them. If you love Freya’s books, you will love this one too. Highly recommended.
Book 2 in this series caught my eye on Instagram. Got it and this. I have to read in order and I’m so glad I did. I loved this book! So great! Do yourself a favor and ignore the less than great cover and give it a try.
Disclaimer: An eARC was provided via Buoni Amici PR and the Author as part of the Blog Tour. The Thoughts, opinions & feelings expressed in the review are therefore, my own.
Freya Barker is the author I end up picking when I need a romance that is realistic in its execution and yet at the same time soothes my soul just the way I like it.
Hit & Run, is the first book in a new series about bodyguards (and even though I signed up immediately cause its Freya Barker; I am still excited for this series!) – and it is all about the emotional connection between two very lonely individuals, who by all intents and purposes do not have anyone to call their own.
Jack is part of the security detail for a movie being filmed in town – which means that he is the security detail for a very problematic movie star; who has given him and his colleagues nothing but headaches ever since they arrived in town. All Jack seems to be doing is damage control AFTER the star wreaks havoc not just in the hotel where they have rented out a whole floor, but also in the town.
Rosie, a single woman who moved back to town to take care of her mother suffering from Alzheimer’s, works as a cleaning lady on night shift in the same hotel. She has had quite the bad luck in the romance department and it doesn’t help that her mother never holds back on those biting taunts whenever she is in her right mind.
Jack has been intrigued by Rosie for a while now, though only gets a chance to integrate in her life when she witnesses something that she really shouldn’t have. But he somehow ends up blindsided by the effect Rosie has on his life, his heart and definitely his priorities.
With danger looming over Rosie and Jack being pulled between his protectiveness towards Rosie and his duties of his job; it becomes a race against time to find their HEA.
Like always, Freya Barker gives us a romance and protagonists that we an connect with, their problems and life being as real as our own, but they are also characters we end up cheering for, right till the end.
I am really excited to see where Ms. Barker takes this series to in the future!
Well, Freya Barker does it again with the start of another fabulous series. Hit and Run is the first book, which focuses on Jake Hutchinson, an employee of PASS, a security company, and Rosie Perkins, a hotel cleaning woman. The hotel in which Rosie works at is filled with chaos due to the crew and actors taking up residence while a movie is being filmed. PASS is hired as the security firm and Jake is given the task to look after the leading actor. It’s safe to say that said actor is a typical self-centered, entitled Hollywood a$$hole.
Rosie hasn’t had it easy and works hard as she tries to keep her head above water while caring for her mother who has Alzheimer’s. She’s a sassy, kind, forty-two-year-old redhead who captures the attention of Jake, the thirty-eight-year-old, rock solid, bossy, alpha, dark-haired hottie.
After Rosie witnesses something she shouldn’t have, her life becomes endangered. Add that to the ever-growing list of things going to crap in her life. Good thing Jake and his crew are around because something sinister is going on, and things are gonna go from bad to worse.
I love Rosie and Jake together. They’re truly smitten with one another. The members of PASS: Yanis, Dimi, Radar, and Bree do a great job giving Jake a hard time about it too. I can’t wait to see whose story is up next.
Favorite side character ever? Rosie’s friend, Grant Peabody. He’s a six-foot-six black whirlwind of extravagant gay fabulousness!! Grant is the best friend anyone would want. He adores Rosie and his loyalty and protectiveness toward her goes over and beyond.
Hit and Run has the perfect blend of Jake and Rosie sexy times, plenty of twists and turns while a whodunit gets solved, and a whole slew of new characters who are sure to work their way into our hearts.
Freya Barker never disappoints—not EVER—and this gem is no exception. I highly recommend this one. Five fabulous stars for me!
There is nothing like starting a new Freya Barker book especially one in a new series. Rosie was such a wonderful character. She is 42 and has to move back home to help care for her mother who is suffering from Alzheimer's. Since her fathers death, 20 years prior their relationship was estranged and her mother has been far from kind to her. She is working the night shift as housekeeper at a local hotel while taking care of her mom and trying to make ends meet. Rosie witnesses an accident one night while leaving work and through a string of events meets Jake. He is working security for a film crew who is staying at the hotel, and as Rosie and Jake begin to cross paths, upcoming events will change their lives forever. I just loved Jake in all his "alpha" glory. He served 3 tours in the military and returns home to work for a security firm formed by his friends. What originally starts as a job for Jake turns into so much more. Jake and Rosie have amazing chemistry and I loved watching how their relationship flourished. I loved all the secondary characters, especially Rosie’s best friend and co-worker Grant. He has a big personality and had me laughing out loud. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.
Enjoyed this one. The author set up a nice conflict.
The heroine Rosie has come home to take care of her mother who has Alzheimers. In doing so she needs a job that allows her to be with her mother during the day. So she works the night shift at a local hotel in housekeeping.
A Hollywood movie crew is filing in their town and her hotel is their base of operations. The lead star who is also one of the producers bankrolling the film is an arrogant butt-head (I kept picturing this guy as Tom Cruise -lite). He is an entitled asshole who refuses to take simple direction from his security company.
One of the security specialists assigned to this dude is Jake. Jake works for a company that is just starting out and needs the contract, so they are hyper aware of how much TLC the stars, especially this star needs.
But then Rosie witnesses something and Jake and his company have to decide how to react. But Jake has a bit of conflict of interest because he has become interested in Rosie.
So yeah this was a good read. I like reading blue collar workers who simply go about their life working and not being overly downtrodden. I liked Rosie's support system and as I mentioned I liked the conflict. There is also a bit of a mystery element because somebody knows Rosie saw something she wasn't supposed to see. The author gives a lot of options as to who might be trying to silence Rosie, but I figured it out quickly. The who, if not the why at any rate.
This is a pleasant read. And a fine audiobook. It’s full of tropes and stereotypes, including a black gay best friend for the heroine, macho hero, and heroine whose “innocence” is attractive.
Thankfully, there wasn’t anything hugely problematic so I could enjoy it mildly. The heroine is 42 and the hero is 38, which is cool.
There’s some moral issues here that are discussed ad naseum and the villains get their karmic comeuppance. But it’s not cool how there’s a coverup that our main characters are complicit in. It makes me like them less.
The female narrator articulates her words weirdly but it wasn’t enough to make me hate the audiobook. I enjoyed the male narrator.
I also like that the main characters don’t fight their attraction too much and the romance is fairly straightforward with some suspense elements.
The heroines mom has dementia but it didn’t get too emotional for me. Thank goodness!
I like Freya Barker’s work because she tends to focus on slightly more mature protagonists, in this case 38 and 42. Both have lived fairly solitary lives up until their meeting. In the case of Jake, his parents died when he was young and after meeting his best friends in foster care, went into the military. When he came out he joined up with his best friends and started working for PASS (Protection and Security Services). He is a loner, who has never been interested in romance or relationships. He didn’t avoid them, they just never even entered his head.
On the other hand, Rosie had wanted a chance for a family and relationships but got sucked into a long term relationship with a married man and believed all his lies. Her Dad, with who she had a great relationship, died when she was 20 and her mother criticised her endlessly.
Eventually returning to Grand Junction to look after her mother who had rapidly worsening dementia, Rosie found herself working in housekeeping on a night shift in order to look after her mother during the day and have someone sleepover at night for less money than a nurse would charge for watching her mother when she was awake. She was exhausted, harried, miserable and alone, apart from her friend Grant, a gloriously camp black man, who was also kind of isolated.
Jake ended up meeting Rosie when he was based at the hotel she worked in, whilst he worked security for a film that was shooting nearby. They both had separate run-ins with the star of the film and they were not happy occasions. Rosie witnessed the star doing something they shouldn’t and Jake ended up having to find out whether she would keep her mouth shut.
This book was interesting because it not only dealt with a romance between two older and more experienced people, but it also dealt with the moral ambiguity involved with working with the rich and the powerful and how the downfall of one important part of the puzzle would mean hundreds, if not thousands of people being affected financially. Having the backdrop of their newly flourishing relationship being lies and coverups doesn’t make for an easy start.
I liked this book because the heroes weren’t ‘good’ people. They were ordinary people forced to see things in grey rather than black and white. These characters were interesting, flawed and normal. Added to the interesting characters was a diverting plot, to keep you guessing until the end.
All around, this was an entertaining book, and I’ll definitely read the next in the series.
The start of a new series for Ms. Barker, I am so excited, she does the security and investigation so well in her books. She has me reading along falling in love with her mature relatable characters but also working my butt of to solve the mystery before she reveals the good stuff. That is exactly what I got.
Rosie is a 42 yr old hard worker, trying to find her new normal while she has little time away from work and caring for her ailing mother. She has a great bestie who also works with her at the hotel where she works the night shift. As well as a wonderful woman who stays with her mom while she works. Poor Rosie puts up with a lot from her mother who suffers from Alzheimer's.
Jake Hutchinson "Hutch" is 38 and has returned after 3 tours in the military. After floating in the wind for a little, trying to dissolve his quilt that his best friend was hurt and he came away unscathed he is brought home by that friend. Now working as part of the team for PASS and generally loving life.
PASS is covering security for a movie production crew and the actors while they film in the local area. They are all staying at the hotel Rosie works for. Hutch has noticed the beautiful red head working about. When his charge finds himself in trouble, Jake is sent to see what if anything Rosie might have seen. The more the story unfolds, the more Jake's time spend watching over Rosie turns to protecting her than his client.
I love that although Rosie and Jake find a quick comfortable place together, neither of them were looking for more. She was too busy with her mom and he was focused on work, but feelings just sneak up on them. The tentative waters are fun to explore. Can these unexpected feeling lead to more?
What a great group of secondary characters to keep this series moving forward. Super funny gay best friend. Hot alpha security guys with a strong woman to keep them in line. Can't wait to see who's story is next.
Audiobook- The narrators of this audiobook do a superb job of bringing these characters alive. You can completely understand the emotions the author was trying to portray. I fell a little more in love with the story and the fabulous characters while I listened and laughed out loud from time to time.

I just had the opportunity to listen to the audiobook of Hit and Run and if I loved the story before, the dual narration from Tanya Eby and Patrick Zeller only added to the experience. Ms. Eby has a fine command of the characters' emotions and does a great job differentiating between them. Mr. Zeller has a deeply sexy voice and his narration is spot on for Jake and the others in his chapters. Kudos to both for bringing Ms. Barker's words to life. Freya Barker is a master at crafting intricate suspense plots with hard-working, mature characters as her heroes and heroines. Hit and Run is the first in a new series for the author and it promises to be as entertaining and intriguing as her past series have been. Jake and Rosie's story hits all the feels and keeps the reader guessing until the end who the bad guy is. Rosie's life hasn't been easy and her relationship with her mother has always been tense. Leaving Grand Junction to pursue her dream didn't exactly work out as she planned. Now over forty, she's back taking care of the mother and working nights to make her life work. Being at the wrong place at the wrong time sets her up as a target and a security risk. The movie cast and crew staying at the hotel seems to add not only to her workload but also risks her survival. Jake backstory is as painful as Rosie's: alone at a young age, ex-military, guilt-ridden because of his best friend's injury while deployed, he's never been one to put himself out there. Working movie set security with his best friend and adopted family puts him at war with himself, and the powers that be. Does he finish the job he's hired for or find the truth and protect the little redhead who has caught his eye? The war within himself is as difficult for him as it was in the desert. Jake and Rosie have a ton of chemistry and the suspense plot in this book is so well played and littered with red herrings, it was a surprise when the culprit is revealed. Ms. Barker is beyond compare when it comes to writing romantic suspense and each book proved that. I can hardly wait until her next book is released.
First let me state that I listened to an audio book version so it was a little different for me. Especially with me just sitting there listening and staring off into space. I had time I laughed and my husband asked who am I laughing at and I had to show him I was listening to something on my phone.
Rosie is the sweetest person I've met so far out of all of Freya's books. Freya touches home when it comes to the U.S health care system and insurance. It saddened me that Rosie had to sell her childhood home just to make sure her mothers care was covered.
I had a good guess of who was stalking Rosie, yet when it came down to the guys at PASS putting it together and figured it out. I was shocked and had a wait what moment. However further on in the book, the real story comes to light and thank heavens Jaie got there in time.
Jake was HOT!! Let me tell you reading a sex scene and listening to one is so different and listening to it is WAY better I think. Grant boy he is a character too! He reminds me of another person in another series I will not name. Freya's alpha males are sweet, hot and very short wired when it comes to their woman. Funny how a few things were mentioned like Silver Fox!!
If you haven't read a Freya Barker book, I'd start here. All the men at PASS are off the chart!
I listened to this book on audio rather than reading it and was drawn in from the start. This is my first book by Freya Barker and it will not be my last. Both the narrators Tanya Eby and Patrick Zeller did a good job and certainly added to my enjoyment of the story.
This is the first book in a new series so was a great way to be introduced to Ms. Barker’s story telling and is about Rosie Perkins and Jake Hutchinson. Poor Rosie has had a rough time lately and has returned home to look after her mother and works nights at a local hotel. Jake is a security specialist working at the hotel and he is intrigued by Rosie who is equally enamoured with him.
This was a a book filled with danger, secrets, lies and surprises. The intrigue and suspense, not to mention the danger kept me on the edge of my seat as I listened to this story.
Will the danger and secrets tear Rosie and Jake apart? Will they Jake and the men of PASS be able to put the pieces of the puzzle together whilst flying under the radar or will danger loom and put their lives and those they love in jeopardy ? .
There are twists, turns and surprises in Hit & Run as Rosie and Jake follows the clues and I have to say that I was taken by surprise on a couple of occasions.
A great story of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Rosie has had a very difficult life and has come home to deal with her spiteful and critical mother who has dementia. Jake is part of a team that are providing a security detail to a film crew and its stars, a nasty bunch of rich entitled people with no moral compass. Rosie is in the wrong place and becomes a target. The story centers around Rosie and Jake but with a brilliant set of supporting characters. I like the fact the characters are around 40 years old and have actually lived a realistic life with all its challenges. Lots of action and heartache with a lot of reality thrown in. Everyone needs a gay best friend like Grant who was kind, outrageous and very funny!

**4.5 stars** Wow Freya, this new series took me right back to Cedar Tree days and I loved it! Jake Hutchinson is a part of a security firm run by two brothers and boy, I cannot wait till we get their stories!!
Rosie Perkin's has had to return to Grand Junction to take care of her Mother, who has Alzheimer's. Minding her own business, working night shift at a hotel she is thrust into a situation that ends in her life being threatened and requires the attention of the security firm & Jake, in particular has an immense interest in the case and Rosie!
Grant is Rosie's best friend and what a hoot he was, just a wonderful character. I am so looking forward to reading the next books in this series. Seriously reading it felt like coming home, loved every page.
The start to this newest series is full of action, suspense and a cast of characters you will love. Rosie is not your typical heroine, she is older, independent and used to working hard to take care of whatever needs to be done. Jake is not happy about his current assignment and is t sure what to make of Rosie when he first crosses paths with her. As the story continues there is plenty of mystery, intrigue and of course intense heat that will have you continuing to turn the page as quickly as you can! I loved all these characters and cannot wait for more from this series!
Hit & Run is the first book in the new PASS security series. I loved this romantic suspense story. The characters of Jake and Rosie are mature and very realistic and relatable. They have great chemistry together. When Rosie sees something she should not have Jake takes it upon himself to protect her. The other characters in this story are also amazing and I hope this series continues with each of them being involved. This has a great storyline with danger, death, and romance.
I cannot wait for the next book in this series. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I was so excited when I learned about this new series of bodyguards. Jake is on the job dealing with a cocky Hollywood celeb. Things take a strange turn when he is given the task to watch Rosie. She was in the wrong place at the wrong time. She heard the crash. Now Jake has to make sure to find out what she knows. He didn't realize how innocent she was. Roise worked the night shift with her bestie. She looked after her mother who was deteriorating. Now she is dealing with Jake. He knew she was his job, but he felt more. So much more. This book is filled with lust, mystery, family, and Freya's characters. They are really. Beautiful women and men that are in their late 30 s early 40s. Enjoy!
