Laird Oliphant's sons have to get married. Without an heir, he's gathered his sons—his six illegitimate sons, all born in the same year—and declared whoever presents him with a grandson first will become the next Highland laird.

Reactions are...mixed.

But to Finn Oliphant, this is exactly the news he's been waiting for. He's already chosen his wifely candidate: his love, the vivacious and intelligent Fiona MacIan. And since she loves him in return, this whole "marriage ultimatum" thing should be easy-peasy. He'll invite her to the Oliphant keep to sign all the betrothal contracts, and Bam! Done! They can get on with the babies!

Except...

It's not that Fiona is getting cold feet, exactly. She's fairly certain she loves Finn. Mostly. Well, verra likely, at least. But she's never been the most self-confident of women, especially compared to her sister. Her identical twin sister, whom Finn mistakes for her upon arrival, which is super-awkward all around.

The idea of marrying Finn makes her warm and giddy—hopefully that's just lust, not the ague—but how can she be certain he wants her? It's hard enough to be certain of anything on Oliphant land, what with mad Aunt Agatha spreading rumors, five potential brothers-in-law offering terrible advice, and a mysterious ghostly drummer keeping them awake at all hours.

And mayhap Finn should've mentioned his identical twin brother, too? That would have saved everyone a lot of headache...and heartbreak.

Finn and Fiona have plenty to learn about themselves and one another before they can be certain this marriage is a good idea. But unfortunately, they're running out of time. Dun-dun-duuuuuuuun!

***
Warning: this comedy of errors is not for uptight prudes. There's plenty of naughty scenes, more than a few anachronistic jokes, and an embarrassing number of mistaken-identity gags. Only pick up this book if you have a sense of humor, please.

A Scot Mess by Caroline Lee
The Hots for Scots series book 1. Historical Scottish romance.
Laird Oliphant declares his first illegitimate son to marry and produce a son will become his heir and the next Highland Laird. Finn has already met and fallen in love with Fiona so has no problem with the challenge.

Surprisingly progressive in his equality thinking, I admired Finn throughout the story. He and Fiona were actually pretty funny at times. During a make-out session, his touch makes Fiona “forget her own name” and she actually questions herself. “My name is Fiona, right?”

🎧 I’ve never been a fan of a heavy Scottish accent mostly because it slows me down as I try to interpret what’s being said - “has kenned yers”. Fortunately the narration was clear and easy to follow by ignoring the “ken”. The performance was done by William Macleod who did a wonderful job in particular with the humor. While my standard speed is around 1.5 these day, I listened to this at 1.3.

I read this novella as a part of the BOTM challenge for HRBC.

Quick Review
- Generally, I don't mind Caroline Lee books, as they can be fun, sometimes interesting, and steamy, oh, but not this one, this one was over the top even with my lowered threshold.
- The blurb asks the readers to have an open mind and a sense of humour and to not expect historical accuracy, fine, done, but even after giving it all these considerations, I did not enjoy it.
- The list of problems included but were not limited to - the writing, the plot, the characters, the lack of development, a dearth of romance or any emotion for that matter, and the worst of all - it was not funny. Really, Ms Lee tried too hard to be funny and unfortunately failed miserably.
- Too many characters, most of them identical twins, made this story difficult to follow. I understand it was meant to be a comedy of errors, but in my view, this whole thing felt erroneous.
- I did not like Fiona, nor did I like her sister Skye. I don't even wish to explain why. They were both daft idiots.
- Finn was nice, and I think he deserved better.
- No romance to speak of, but there was some steam.
- Daft aunt Agatha was fun.
- A good thing was that it was over quickly, so I did not have to invest a lot of time.

My Recommendation
- Dinna bother with it lassie, ye will be disappointed.

"A Scot Mess" by Caroline Lee, new author to this reader was indeed a "mess" in its own comical and funny way. I wasn't expecting much from this novella but it did have me smiling on occasion of the idiocy of the story. It was witty in some parts and not your typical highlander romance that is expected and I totally agree with the author's excerpt in why she wrote this the way she did. Not sure what to look for in the other stories in this series but this one I give a 3-Star rating.

The perfect little book for a Saturday afternoon read. Pour yourself a glass wine and get ready to giggle.
I love Caroline Lee because she doesn't take herself too seriously, she is here to to entertain, and does one hell of a job doing it.

Kilt wearing sons (twins, sets of them!) are told by their father that marriage is a must, and like... now.
So Finn's story involves his prospect Fiona, some one he is down right excited to marry. She's attracted to him too, but marriage?

Well grab this short little novella and enjoy the laughs.

Maybe I was expecting a bit too much based on the "Warning" in the precis, but I didn't really find this book that funny.

description

Maybe a few slightly humorous exchanges between the brothers, but that's about it. It didn't feel any funnier than any other typical historical romance I've read 🤷‍♀️.

Honestly, I just didn't get the relationship between the MCs at all in this book. Finn falls head over heels in love with Fiona the first day they meet, and when his father tells him that he must marry that year, he's ecstatic because he really wants to marry Fiona. When Fiona shows up at Finn's father's keep so they can get betrothed, she claims that she also loves Finn, but for some reason, she doesn't want to marry him. She doesn't trust that he actually wants to be with her or something like that. It's just ridiculous and hard to understand because he never gives her any reason to doubt him, and most of the time she's mooning over him and talking about how perfect they would be together.

So, even though she shows up to sign a betrothal agreement, she makes Finn wait because she's not sure about his feelings (despite his constant assurances) or her feelings, but she gets angry because he won't kiss her until she decides to really be with him. Like, how dare the dude want to wait for someone who really wants him, right?

description

There just wasn't any real conflict in here. Fiona is nervous about getting married, and that's it. And she gets over it because she decides that since Finn asked her to marry him, then he must actually love her. Nothing actually happens between the MCs, Fiona is just suddenly fine with things. She just came off super selfish to me, making Finn stew for no reason, so I didn't care anything about her or this relationship.

And the mistaken identity stuff was just handled so poorly. Can we talk about how awful Skye is? You kiss the guy you think your twin sister might marry because he's hot, and excuse it because she's not totally sure she'll marry him?

description

And why doesn't Duncan say anything to Finn the second Fiona comes up to confront him about his supposed cheating with Skye? You think you kissed your bro's fiancé, and you say nothing? Is Duncan unfamiliar with the Bro-Code?

description

Overall, not very funny, not very naughty, and not very romantic. It was a quick read and easy to get through, but just kind of ho-hum. Nothing I haven't come across before.

When Laird Oliphant demands that all his sons marry, decreeing that the first to have a son and heir will become the next laird, there are mixed reactions. Unlike his brothers, Finn Oliphant is thrilled at this ultimatum because he already has a love whom he longs to marry: Lady Fiona MacIan. Since she loves him too, obeying his father’s decree should be no problem, he just has to invite her to the Oliphant home and sign a betrothal contract.

But when Fiona arrives, things don’t go quite as smoothly as Finn imagined. Fiona is almost certain of her love for Finn, but she’s a bit insecure after a lifetime of being compared to her identical twin sister and she wants to be absolutely assured that Finn truly wants her. Things would’ve also been easier if Finn had mentioned that he too had an identical twin brother, and possibly avoiding several misunderstandings and assumptions that nearly derailed his marriage plans.

If you’re looking for an extremely lighthearted romp with some burly Scots, look no further. With two sets of identical twins running about who haven’t all met face to face, this can only be a comedy of errors. Finn and Fiona had an instantaneous connection that they nursed over the winter through letters. Now, with the arrival of spring, they’re able to reunite and discuss marriage once again, but Finn will have to convince Fiona that his feelings are genuine and lasting, a task made more difficult by the fact that they each have an identical twin running about the place. Farcical mayhem ensues but all misunderstandings are cleared up quickly, leaving behind a fun, humorous romp with entertaining and intriguing supporting characters that make me want to read the rest of the series. This is the perfect read for a quick, lighthearted escape from reality.

Twins! OH MY

Laird William Oliphant has 3 sets of twins, all born close together, and all illegitimate. He does have legitimate chikd, Lady Nessa. The twins in order of age Alistair, currently act as Laird and his twin Kiergan, the lover of women. Then scholarly Malcolm and bull-chested Rocque, and Duncan, the goldsmith, and Finn Oliphant. With each being born within a few months time they all get along and love their roll in the family.

Now Laird William has decreed that the first one to marry and produce a male heir will be the next Laird. He does not want his cousin to inherit, as the man is not fit in Laird William's opinion. Each grumble but know they have to do their duty, but secretly will in their own time. Aunt Agatha, flighty, elderly, senile lady that she is, loves to talk about the "doooooooom" of those that hear the Oliphant Drummer. Since all of them think she is talking about something bad happening, they get a shock when she talk about love.

Finn, the charming, charismatic of the bunch is the clan trader. He gets the best cost for the goods he trades or buys. On his last trip, he meets a lovely woman that be guilds him. She is just as good at trading as he is.

Lady Fiona MacIan, a laird’s sister, Fiona is not very confident in herself when if comes to everyday things. In her trading and dealings with merchants she knows how to get what she wants or needs at a fair price. Her twin sister Lady Skye is better suited to running the clan than being a lady.

Finn and Fiona hit it off from the start, they write to one another over the winter. As the Claire's decree now gives Finn the chance he needs, Finn is the first to jump at making Fiona his wife. So he invites Fiona and her family for a visit.

Now he has four days to convenience Fiona to be his bride. Her lack of confidence shows and Finn's does what he can to get her over that lack of confidence. When she agrees to the martiage, she is elated, until Skye tells her what happened. Not knowing that Finn and Duncan are identical twins like they are.

So join in on the first of the brothers woo the ones they want to marry. As Film creates memories for them to start married life, obstacles are thrown in their way. They get to know each other, their family

Great tongue and cheek comedy, wonderful plot, and inevitably bring these two lots of laughter and a HEA. Oh can you figure out who the drummer is yet? He does not get revealed in this box but was such a great easy read and a joy to do it.

I don't know if it was the story or the narrator, but I had a hard time listening. I increased the speed to 1.5x but it still seemed to drag. I really wanted to like this story. It could be I'm coming off a five-day migraine and reading anything would have had the same results.

It was a good story, and I will try more books by this author. I'm going to try to read this book instead of listen and see if it was just the narration.

DNF @ 43%, audio version. I don’t star rate books I didn’t finish but here’s why:

I guess I’m an uptight prude with no sense of humour because I find the word “sexy” extremely jarring in a HistRom?

Grabbed this (ebook and audio) on stuff your eReader day so I didn’t see the full synopsis and the warning from the author would have been a giant red flag that this is not for me, and frankly not well written. Why are we shitting on readers with different but unharmful tastes in the blurb? It’s not cute and I feel like calling a reader an uptight prude is on level with using the label “clean” and being a purity crusader.

Also there are TWO sets of identical twins and at 43% no one has accidentally f*cked the wrong person. Lame.

Most of the historical novels I read can be a bit stuffy, but I enjoyed the humor and comedy of errors that this book brought to the table. Finn and Fiona were a sweet couple and I love how determined Finn was to marry her. This first book did a good job of letting you get a feel for the other men that I'm assuming will be the lead hero in future books. I enjoyed their family dynamic even though they all seemed so different!

Wow, identical twins can sure cause trouble! lol This is such a delightful story and it truly was a fun read. I look forward to reading the rest of the books in the series.

Finn falls in love with Fiona the very first time he meets her and intends to marry her. She feels the same way BUT she's not too sure about the marriage part because they really don't know each other. When she arrives at Oliphant Castle, it's the perfect time get more acquainted with each other before she says "yes". What follows will have you gasping, giggling, swooning, etc...:) Add a cast of characters that you won't soon forget and you have a story well worth reading!

OMG delightfully funny! I stumbled across this series when I was looking for a shorter historical romance (HR), having just finished a long series of long books (Celtic Brooch). It is the funniest HR series I have done. My only criticism is that only half the series is out in audiobook form. (The rest are due out later this year.) The premise is a Scottish laird needs to name an heir and charges his 6 bastard sons, 3 sets of twins, to marry and have a son to claim the leadership clan. Each Book then follows one illegimate son, or the sole legitimate daughter.

This was the first book in this series. There are lots of twins so be sure to keep them straight. I really enjoyed this book about twins that meet twins and all the confusion that follows. I found myself cracking up; with some of the mistakes that were made. I am looking forward to reading about the other sets of twins. Yes, this guy had three sets of twins all in the SAME year. This series is a must read!

Audiobook Review:
Overall – 5
Performance – 5
Story – 5

A delightfully fun and sexy story.

AFAIK this is the first audiobook I’ve listened to performed by William Macleod and I loved his performance of this very humorous story. It’s also the first book I’ve read by Caroline Lee but it won’t be the last because I now have to read all of the others in this series.

Virtually nothing about this story is serious but it is so much fun. Laird Oliphant has three sets of twin boys – all about the same age and all illegitimate. The first son to produce an heir will become the next Laird.

Here is a short NSFW example of one of my favorite parts of this story:

“The man I slept with had a large freckle on his cock,” Fiona repeated, slower and louder.
“His…cock?” her brother repeated.
She nodded. “Ye ken, his male copulatory organ?”
“I ken what a cock is!” Stewart snapped. “But no’ what his cock looks like.”
Nessa cleared her throat. “Ye have a pet rooster, Finn?”
Before anyone could set her straight, Stewart whirled on Finn. “Lift yer kilt,” the MacIan laird commanded.
Torn between shock and laughter, Finn jerked back. “Why?”
“So we can see if ye have a freckle!” Stewart bellowed, as if this were all perfectly logical.
The laughter was beginning to win out now, threatening to crawl up Finn’s throat and choke him with it. They were standing in the middle of the great hall, and as this completely ridiculous scene had played out, more and more of the Oliphants had gathered.
And Stewart MacIan wanted Finn to lift his kilt and show everyone his cock.
Oh well. If it means marrying Fiona…
Finn turned to his twin brother. “Do ye have a freckle on yer cock?”
Dunc shrugged. “I’ve never checked,” he said drily. “But if it means no’ having to marry the woman ye love…”
With a sigh, Duncan reached down, grasped the bottom edge of his kilt, and lifted it.
Unwilling to have his brother prove the braver, Finn did the same.
And as he held his kilt high, around them, gasps, murmurs and titters filled the great hall, he met Fiona’s eyes and tried to hold in his chuckles.
Her gaze dropped to their kilts, then lower still, as Finn and his brother stood there, holding their kilts aloft, bollocks dangling in the breeze.

I can hardly wait to read the remaining books in this series!

This book contains lots of twins and lots of Scottish men with varying opinions on marriage. I still kind of wonder at how the author could make marriage and male heir a contest when few seem particularly worried about being the next clan Laird. But they are men after all, and brothers at that. There are no length they’ll not go to one-up one another I guess!

This was Fiona and Finn’s story and they are just the cutest. Seriously, there love was there from the moment they met and it took far too long for Fiona to accept it.

I would have enjoyed seeing Sophie and Fiona interact more, but obviously to pull of the twist that couldn’t happen. Hope we’ll get to see more in the future.

Oh my goodness! My cheeks hurt so badly, I was practically rolling on the floor laughing for a good 15 minutes listening to a ‘certain’ scene at the end. The Oliphant men are certainly not shy. I adored this story and cannot wait to read more. I listened to the audiobook and was thrilled to have an actual Scottish reader, it made the story that much more enjoyable. The story is told with such humour that you cannot wipe the smile away. Finn is a charmer certainly, and his affection for Fiona is plain as day. I loved watching him try to work past her insecurities, not with words that can be denied but allowing his actions to show his affection. Caroline Lee has a voice that can’t be matched in humour, making a story a pure delight.

I had so high hopes for this one, based on the reviews and book description.
It was a nice read, but I felt there was something missing.
It's advertised as comedy of errors, I was expecting through the book when will the twin mistake happen, and when I found out it was barely mentioned.

And twin revealing thing- was so out of the context.

I'm not intrigued to start reading the whole series.

How many sets of twins can you have in one story? Apparently, a lot and what a family of men they are. Laird Oliphant wants his sons married and with babies. Finn, whose twin is Duncan and Fiona, whose twin is Skye, fall in love, plan to marry until Fiona gets worried forcing Finn to woo her. Its a comedy, sweet feelings, identical twin mix ups and an adorable ending. Looking forward to Duncan and Skye's story

"A Scot Mess" by Caroline Lee is book one in "The Hots for Scots" series. Laird Oliphant wants a grandson so he can pick the next Highland Laird. He tells his 6 sons about it, and they are all trying to find someone to marry and to have their child. I always enjoy a good book placed in or near Scotland. Who doesn't love a man in a kilt ? This book focuses on Finn and Fiona's story. They don't know that they both have identical twins, so some shady stuff can happen with that. It has a lot of humor in this book. My favorite part is when Stuart had the twin men (Finn and Duncan)lift their kilts to see which one has a freckle on their manly parts.

What could go wrong when Finn who has an identical twin falls for Fiona who also has an identical twin? A delightful romp in Scotland with a mad aunt and a castle ghost drummer who heralds dooooooom. Loved this light and fluffy book.

What to do when your Laird father decrees that his 6 sons must marry and the first to provide an heir will be the next Laird?
Finn takes this opportunity to ask for Fiona's hand. They met a year ago , and he has been longing ever since. What could go wrong..... ummmm did they each forget to mention their Identical twins?

A little confusing at the beginning with all the brothers names, and the middle got a bit introspective ( "do I really love him?"), But the End brings in some needed humor of the "which twin is which" variety.

This was a light and easy read. The characters are entertaining and do a lot of joking with one another. I enjoyed the book. It was a nice romance. It wasn't as funny as I had hoped it would be. There was a mix-up that was resolved in a very unexpected way. Most of the story was a straight forward romance though.
