Book two in the epic Third Chance Enterprises series, Dear Durwood is a standalone mystery pitting uncompromising principle against big city greed.

Durwood Oak Jones is a man of few indulgences. One he does allow is a standing ad in Soldier of Fortune magazine soliciting “injustices in need of attention.”

This month’s bundle of letters includes one from Carol Bridges, mayor of the dusty, blue-collar town of Chickasaw, Texas. For nearly a century, Chickasaw has relied on the jobs and goodwill of Hogan Consolidated, a family-run manufacturer of industrial parts. Now East Coast lawyers and investment bankers have taken aim at the company. The citizens of Chickasaw fear it may be acquired or bankrupted, leading to massive layoffs — effectively destroying the town.

Durwood and his trusty bluetick coonhound, Sue-Ann, fly to Texas to see what can be done. They find a young CEO born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Factory workers with hammers. A good woman, Carol Bridges, who knows her town is being cheated but can’t get to the bottom of how. And lawyers.

Dirty, good-for-nothing lawyers.

Dear Durwood is officially the second book in the Third Chance Enterprises series, which began with Anarchy of the Mice, but it absolutely can be read as a stand-alone - I would even recommend starting with this one, which is a more concise, conventional thriller, featuring only two of the series’ heroes, the wonderfully strong Durwood Oak Jones and his clever loyal dog Sue-Ann.

Like a more literary Jack Reacher, this has ex-military loner Durwood, who advertises his services rectifying injustices in a magazine, arriving in a small Texas town, Chickasaw. It’s major employer, a long-standing family-run hardware parts manufacturer, is under threat of closure so the progressive mayor, Carol Bridges, hearing of his reputation, has asked for help. Jones knows that legal and financial wrangles are not his forte, but he can’t stand bullies, so bulldozes his way into meetings with the incompetent and possibly corrupt scion and a team of plotting lawyers, who will use every dirty trick to get their way. Can our heroes stay alive long enough to right the wrongs and save the town?

Please don’t be put off by the rather unappealing retro pulp cover - this is a modern-day story which makes up for in heart what it lacks in originality (for that, see the aforementioned Anarchy of the Mice which is much more “out there”!) Various of TCE’s multiple previous adventures are referenced, but don’t worry, you haven’t missed anything, those haven’t featured in any books (yet?)! As with Bond’s other novels, this has a fair bit of politics running through it - which I like, and it certainly doesn’t interfere with the action. There are effective fight scenes but it’s not excessively violent, a spoonful of romance but a fade-out approach to sex (which I prefer, especially from male writers) and swearing is referenced but left out, which I also respect.

It’s a refreshingly quick read - about three hours on my Kindle, with a good ending. I look forward to continuing this series. Overall 4.5 rounded up for the cool dog and great writing. My thanks to NetGalley and Jeff Bond for the ARC which allowed me to give an honest review. Dear Durwood is published on June 15th and available on NetGalley until 15th November.

Yet Another Winner from a Consistently Reliable Author

Part two of the Jeff Bond’s Third Chance Enterprises Book Series, "Dear Durwood" finds the Michigan-based author focusing on what is arguably the series’ best character (at least in this writer’s opinion), Durwood Jones.

The novel follows the former-soldier looking for ‘work’ in the small town of Chickasaw, Texas. From there, you get the classic Western-themed ‘white-collar v. blue-collar/small-town-under-siege’ premise that quickly escalates, drawing the no-B.S. Durwood deeper and deeper into the political mire. Things escalate quickly, albeit, somewhat predictably, but Bond judiciously infuses his story with just enough humor to keep the reader engaged.

Dear Durwood’s billing as the second book in a series is a bit of a misnomer, as Bond’s novel more than succeeds as a stand-alone entry to the series, to the point that one could argue that this shorter, more concise ‘second installment’ would be a better place to start (although, the third book may change that opinion). And, once again, Durwood’s beloved dog, Sue-Ann, is the real star of the show. So much so that I would humbly like to petition Bond to consider penning a stand-alone short-story for Durwood’s four-legged partner.

A modern suspense infused with classic Western themes, Jeff Bond’s Dear Durwood is a fun, fast read (less than two hundred pages)—yet another winner from this consistently reliable author.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley to read and review.

DEAR DURWOOD by author Jeff Bond is the 2nd novel in the “Third Chance Enterprises” series based on the unusual leading character of Durwood Oak Jones, a former military hero who has reached fame in Soldier of Fortune magazine; yet has a strange attraction to taking on investigations that appeal to him based on the people who’ve requested his assistance in letters sent; if the cases merit his efforts to bring justice to those who might not find it otherwise.

Durwood, who could cash in on his past and live a life of ease instead living on the road with his traveling companion, his trusty blue tick coonhound Sue-Ann who is getting a bit on in age but still finds a way to prove her value in addition to just plain being good company along the way.

Chickasaw Texas is where Durwood goes to investigate the impending closure of the business that is the lifeblood of the community at the behest of the lovely and determined mayor of the town who is nobody’s fool and willing to go toe-to-toe with those who seemingly have no concerns beyond the profitability of selling the company to be dismantled and sold off piece by piece.

Can Durwood succeed even if he has reservations about his decision to take the case, or if it has been a mistake, and once he finds that the mayor who contacted may not have been entirely truthful, will he decide to pull out of the investigation?

Enjoyable book that reminds me somewhat of books from the past (as the cover photo and it’s worn edges would suggest), but taking place in the current era with a leading character who is reluctant to embrace modern technology, although he is unable to ignore some of the benefits he learns along the way.

4 stars.

I shamelessly admit I am crushin’ on Durwood Oak Jones.

He may have a standing ad in Soldier of Fortune magazine, but he’s not your run-of-the-mill mercenary.

Actually, Durwood isn’t a mercenary at all. He’s not muscle for hire. His unique set of skills simply aren’t available to the highest bidder. Since his military days, Durwood has fought to right injustices because the underdog rarely had the advantage. Which is how he ended up in Chickasaw, Texas.

Big-money Wall Street is suddenly interested in the small town’s single largest employer, Hogan Industries, a manufacturing company. Losing Hogan would be a death knell for Chickasaw. Mayor Carol Bridges is not a damsel in distress looking for a dude in a white hat to save her. She takes her job seriously and is exploring other options to bring jobs to Chickasaw, but her inquiries have been stonewalled and ignored on every front. She simply wants Durwood to get answers for her so she’ll know how to proceed and save her town.

While it’s not diffusing bombs or shooting a drone out the sky six seconds before it hit the fuselage of a jumbo jet carrying six heads of state, Durwood has a gut feeling about Chickasaw’s problem, and he’s impressed with Carol’s forthright nature—and the Iraqi combat medal hanging on her wall—so he agrees to make some inquiries on her behalf.

However, on meeting each of the under-thirty Ivy League graduates who run Hogan Industries, Durwood is not happy with the answers he receives. Jay Hogan and Chester Lyles are arrogant and condescending… and they both will regret underestimating Durwood Oak Jones.

This was such a good read with a great protagonist! I loved the wit and dry humor!

Durwood doesn’t have the swagger of Bond or the ever-simmering rage of Reacher or the mental issues of Rambo. He’s Just. A. Guy. A guy in jeans, boots and a cowboy hat with principles and ethics who believes taking on four guys is a fair fight. He’s buried a wife and a son and tries to stay connected to his youngest son… who works on Wall Street. He takes his blue-tick hound, Sue-Ann, everywhere, and the old dog with a bad hip should also never be underestimated.

Dear Durwood is book 2 in the Third Chance Enterprises series. I have not read book 1—but I downloaded it—and I preordered book 3 so I can learn more about Durwood’s partners, Quaid and Molly.

However, if the author ever penned another adventure for Durwood, I’m here for it! Only, I hope there are no more lawyers… because Durwood hates lawyers!

Enjoy!

This is a fun little book, proving to be a nice little one-day read for me.

This is the first Jeff Bond book that I have read, and although it's the second in a series, it was not at all difficult to read as a stand alone.

It moves at a pretty good clip and kept me interested throughout.

The set-up, that our hero Durwood Jones receives pleas for his intervention in various injustices through the mail, reminded me of the set up in the old radio series Box Thirteen, although I'm sure that this set up has been used in many other stories/series as well, and why not, it gets the job done. I am somewhat disappointed to learn that Durwood is not the only hero of this series, it seems that other characters lead other entries. Although, I haven't met these other characters, and perhaps they are just as appealing as heroes as Durwood is, with his slightly crotchety but amusing view point. He's a very clear character and we never doubt that he's going to do the right thing. (Except perhaps when it comes to birds.)

Durwood is a widower inclined towards rural life, a practical, somewhat curmudgeonly veteran, without a lot of time for city folk. There are a few times where it's suggested that Durwood is a Christian man as well, and the author takes some pains to avoid obscenities, although this is not a preach-y book.

When Durwood is asked to investigate the goings-on in a small company town in Texas, he is naturally inclined to suspect the bankers, the lawyers, the people who have no calluses on their hands. It may, however, prove to be a little more complicated than a case of simple corporate skulduggery.

Durwood's somewhat comic-book like past adventures, alluded to in little sprinkles throughout the book, are amusing but perhaps a little over-done. I gather they are a tip of the fedora to Indiana Jones, an inspiration for these stories, but I found them slightly indulgent on the author's part. Perhaps a few less would have been a little better. Observers more astute than I would have likely picked up on Durwood's name and hat early on as well.

I also found that the last chapter, the 'wrap-up' chapter, felt a little padded.

Over all, this was a pleasant surprise, a light-hearted, old-fashioned adventure story with action, mystery and an appealing hero.

I received an advance review copy for free, in return for this honest review. Thank you.

Book two of the Third Chance Enterprises Series, concentrates on the cantankerous Durwood Oak Jones who takes off on his own with his trusty blue tick hound, Sue-Ann. After advertising his services in the magazine, Soldier of Fortune as one in search of "injustices in need of attention," Durwood is contacted by Carol Bridges, mayor of Chickasaw, Texas, because "East Coast lawyers have taken aim" at the factory that employs most of the town. Intrigued, Durwood with Sue-Ann in tow, head for Chickasaw to meet with the formidable and impressive mayor. The two are drawn to one another and together they begin to unravel the incidents which led to the decision to sell he factory. What they discover puts their lives in danger, yet they are determined to get to the bottom of things and save the town's livelihood. With time running out and danger lurking, will they succeed?
This is a fast-paced read filled with the twists and turns that fuel the best suspense writings. With his rough exterior and his homespun wisdom, Durwood is one of those characters to whom readers are immediately drawn. In mayor Carol Bridges, he finds an equal and their collaboration makes for an exciting read as they unravel the happenings behind the seeming downfall of the local factory and realize their relationship extends beyond work. Readers will find this a fast and fun read by a wordsmith who knows how to engage his audience.

This is the second book in this series but it can be easily read as a standalone.

Durwood Oak Jones was back on his ranch, he had just completed a horrendous mission with his partner in Third chance Enterprise Quaid Rafferty and also Molly McGill. There was a lot that needed doing on the ranch after his absence and also fish to catch.

An e mail from Carol Bridges, Mayor of Chickasaw Texas, caught his attention, she needed help fast.

For 90 years Hogan Consolidated had employed 70 % of the hardworking community of Chickasaw but the firm was was going under since Jay Hogan had been CEO, law suits for faulty hinges were crippling the company .

East Coast Lawyers and Investment Bankers have the company in their sights and liquidation with hundreds of job losses looked inevitable. Carol knew that there was something underhand happening and begs for Durwood's help.

The unfolding story is action packed and full of suspense, who can Carol trust ? Who can Durwood trust ?

Durwood Oak Jones is as far removed from the perceived image of a PI as you can possibly get but I love the character, what he lacks in technological skills etc he more than makes up for in grit, determination and analytical logic. His dog Sue-Ann is a star and I am glad the author didn't make her into a bouncy two year old....oh, and I forgot about the chemistry between Carol and Derwood. An enjoyable story.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

“Dear Durwood” is the second book in a series, but can easily standalone as it is drastically different from the first story. In this adventure mystery, the author chooses to follow one character out of the mercenary type team he puts together in the previous book. Durwood Oak Jones takes on a solo mission in Texas after receiving a letter from the mayor that shady dealings may be at work to take down a family-run company that supports the town’s economy. Durwood and his side-kick dog struggle to discover the injustice as they go against a team of cunning corporate lawyers, but also discover some great allies in town. Although this didn’t have the long weaving plot, and complex multi-character development like the first book, I actually enjoyed it more. I appreciated Durwood’s simplistic, vigilante style and the quick-paced plot line with a few surprises by the end.

"Paper burns."
This is difficult to grade and assess as I have been unable to follow the book, in part because the initial recording production was poor, making the narration indistinct, then, when the sound clarified, the heavily accented American narration was, for me, too rapid to understand. Jarret Lemaster has a very pleasant voice and his character interpretation is good, but for my English ear, his delivery left me struggling to follow the story and several reruns have left me still unable to fully appreciate the story.
Consequently, I have now an ebook version to read alongside a later listening attempt.
The book was a freely gifted complimentary copy from the rights holder, at my request, via Audiobook Boom. Thank you. It sounded an excellent read and I look forward to the ebook.

When I start a Bond novel, I never know what I am going to get. I do know it will be crazy entertaining. This one is exactly that.

Durwood is like a bull in a china shop when he stands up against savvy financial wizards and ruthless corporate lawyers. But he has something those thieving specialists don't – his dog. Really. Durwood may be the star of the show but his arthritic Sue-Ann saves the day.

This is a fun, fast paced entertaining short novel. It's great for readers who like to see injustice made right. There is plenty of action. You'll even learn a bit about how corporations prey on failing businesses and make money doing it. Durwood sets out to stop predatory corporate scum and finds a gal in the process.

I received a complimentary digital copy of this book through Partners in Crime Virtual Book Tours. My comments are an independent and honest review.

If you like a man with attitude, Durwood Oak Jones is your man. His sidekick, Sue-Ann, could also work up a bit of attitude.

His ad in Soldier of Fortune magazine just resulted in a slew of letters. The mayor of Chickasaw, Texas was the winning letter this time. That was because some big name lawyers and investors were gunning for the one industry that was keeping the town alive. Durwood hates lawyers.

Durwood might be a country boy from West Virginia, but he is no simpleton. He can take down the best of the opposition. Sit back and watch him operate.

It’s an easy read of only 184 pages, but it’s certainly satisfying. Thank you, Mr. Bond. It’s been good to see someone from Third Chance Enterprises go solo. I’m partial to Durwood. I’m looking forward to Molly’s solo in The Begonia Killer.

Dear Durwood is the second book in the Third Chance Enterprises series. Each book is standalone so, other than getting to know the characters, you don't need to read the first book to understand this one.

Durwood is a good character and it was fun to follow him along in this mystery. I thought the plot overall was well done and it was wrapped up nicely in this short book, being under 200 pages. I was able to read the book in one sitting.

While the story was easy to follow and there was a decent amount of action in it, I didn't feel as though I was able to solve the mystery alongside Durwood myself. It's just my personal preference, but it's something I personally like to try to do when I read a mystery.

Overall, I enjoyed this one and I'll be curious for the third book.

Dear Durwood gives us a modernized feel of old westerns like Gunsmoke, Bonanza, and McCloud.

I like Durwood’s character, though he’s serious, at times bordering on stoic, and I missed the levity Quaid’s character brought to the first book in this series. Still, Durwood is entertaining on his own. And we have Durwood’s loyal sidekick, Sue-Ann, who shines in her doggy-hero role.

While we don’t have the same dynamics here, we do have a fast-moving adventure for Durwood to untangle and make right. He has a firm sense of justice and isn’t about to stop, regardless of what or who gets in his way.

Dear Durwood is the second book in the Third Chance Enterprises series, but it reads well as a stand-alone.

If possible I would give DEAR DURWOOD more than 5 stars (on a 5-star scale).

I started reading after 10 p.m. with the intention of going to sleep after an hour or so. I finished reading the book less than 2 1/2 hours later. I could NOT close the book. As with ANARCHY OF THE MICE, I love the pulp-style cover. And catching up with Durwood Oak Jones and Sue-Ann (especially Sue-Ann!!!) as they investigate an injustice taking place at the Hogan Consolidated in Chickasaw, Texas, was a joy!

5 Highly Recommended Stars!

Durwood has strong John Wayne meets James Bond vibes. In this second (and much shorter) entry to the Third Chance Enterprises series, he takes center stage to investigate corruption in a small town.

I enjoyed learning more about Durwood in this book and watching him solve the mystery. I really feel like we got to learn more about him as a character and the plot was well paced. I also really liked the allusions to other cases he worked on with his missing colleagues - great world building.

The next book is to take place from the perspective of Molly and I will be interested to see where that one goes. Thank you to the author for an ARC.

Greedy lawyers and bankers scheme to steal a corporation and ruin a town

Failing hinges seem out of place in a company known for high quality but they form the cornerstone of a scheme to shut down the towns main employer, drive it into a takeover and pennies on the dollar sale, and suffer the demise of having all assets parceled out and the town left destitute. Big city lawyers and their pet bankers were not above murder to get their way and power, ruthlessness and clever schemes are always hard to detect and defeat. Good characters and worth the time.

Dear Durwood is a cute mystery. Retired marine and cowboy he posts an ad in a newspaper. People seeking help answers the ad. Now he must research and choose who to help.
Durwood's next journey takes him and his faithful companion Sue Ann to Chickasaw, Texas. He must unravel the mystery as to why a successful business is bombarded with lawsuits.
You can just picture Durwood and hear his lingo. A delightful story I do recommend.

The advanced copy of "Dear Durwood" was a good first choice for me as a newbie to BookSirens. Having read more than my fair share of Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, and other stand-alone mystery novels, Dear Durwood's plot was fast-paced and riveting enough. It had a few unexpected twists, and I was pleasantly surprised to find the unlikeliest of allies in the story. A must-read for mystery lovers. This was a quick read and you can see the author's skill developing from the first book. The dialogue felt natural and unstilted, though some more tags or action beats could be used in some areas. The novel takes place in a small town, has a western theme, and features shady business practices and murder. There is a high level of predictability and humor. This book can be read as a standalone and is a great fun summer read, something you don't need to get too mentally invested in to enjoy.

Dear Durwood is a masterpiece! The flow of the story runs smooth. Despite not having read the other books, that's not a factor when it comes to this one. The action/climax runs at an appropiate pace. It's just what we need in these [political] times of uncertainty and class clashes. I did find it odd when the narrator started using the second person voice after chapter Seven. But other than that, I loved it.

A bit predictable, but enjoyable read.

There weren't many twists in the story you didn't see coming, but it was still an enjoyable read and the fight scene was believable.

I liked Durwood. He was funny and observing, being true to his role in the book.

The style of the author was more telling than showing, although I did get pulled into the story at the beginning. In the end, it was a good short read.

I am giving this four stars instead of five because I felt it could have been told in a short story or a novella. It was a bit strange as well because it did not have an "out there" plot like all of his other books I have read so far. They talk about all of the whacky things going on; but this plot has a pretty basic theme.
Not that it isn't good! It is!
But, dammit Durwood: GET SALLY SOME ARTHRITIS MEDS!!!!!!!!!!!!

This title was far superior to the other I read in this series. There is plenty of action and some suspense as Durwood decides to try and help a small Texas community that is being taken over by some lawyers, aided by some locals.

It does offer some views into unscrupulous behavior that I imagine is fairly common practice.

Although I felt there were some inconsistencies based off of the previous book, I still really enjoyed this installment. It was good getting to know Durwood better, and seeing him working on his own. Giving Durwood a love interest was a nice addition. There was a lot of action and mystery. You were kept guessing who, what and how until the end. I'm excited to see what happens with this series next.

Mind Candy with a Conscience

This is the second book in the Third Chance Enterprises series, but the first book I've read. Durwood Oak Jones is an old-fashioned hero with old-fashioned ideals and old-fashioned ways. Without him and his ten year-old blue tick hound, Sue Ann, this would be just another action adventure novel. The plot is straightforward but original, the writing is concise but descriptive, and the secondary characters are both predictable and quirky.

I got hooked right away one the unique main character and his crusade for justice. Durwood is a well described and believable protagonist fully fleshed out with strengths and weaknesses as he takes on task of saving a small town whose main industry is under attack. He is worried that the talents that he brings to the fight are a mismatch for those of the foes awaiting him. I raced through the book and enjoyed every page - you will too!

Great Read!

This is the second in a series (just read a sample of the 3rd and can’t wait to finish that!) but you don’t need to have read the 1st to enjoy it. In fact I’m going to go back and read the 1st too! I really enjoyed the story so much that I picked it up and did not put it down. It is VERY well written and entertaining. Looking forward to reading more from this series!
