Santolouco's art is terrific, his writing can be ambivalent and confusing. Still I liked what they did with Shredder here, tying him throughout history and using the Pantheon to further the story. This series is only for long time readers of IDW's TMNT though. Anyone not familiar with the continuity will likely be lost.

Superb. Mateus Santolouco's artwork is absolutely amazing. I am surprise that the big two have not acquired this artist yet. Santolouco' s artwork is some the best I have seen in the business of comics. The colors a vivid and breathtaking. This story was riveting from beginning to end. Santoluco writes a juicy story about how true evil can not be buried but it just takes on a new form and still lingers. I think the book does a great job in bringing humanity to the Ninja Turtles greatest lore. The book really as a mythic quality to this iteration of the TMNT series. The truth be told I had been away from the series for a while but reading this book cemented why I think think the long running TMNT series for IDW is some of the best storytelling in comics. New readers will find this look into the evil that is shredder fascinating. This is really a great story that I hope all TMNT fans will not miss.

I expected more from this book. I make make no secret about liking the bigger Vader darker TMNT, but I have never really gotten into to comic versions of them. This looked interesting.

For me coming into this mini series I really did not know which way was up. Shredder the big bad of TMNT is in hell no more then he deserves, but his dying wish seemed to be of redemption. Now he must battle his way back to the living through hell with his own personal conflicts and people he has killed.

I do not mind a more spiritual story if it is done correctly, but this was more Confusus style philosophy and the action was no where near the level I was expecting.

All round a bit of a disappointing ending and story with very good art work. I am tempted to try and find out how it ends, but this is supposed to be a mini series self contained, otherwise why not just make it part of the main story?

Feeding directly into issue 100 of TMNT, this five issue mini-series puts the Shredder front and centre as he navigates the depths of Hell in order to find out the truth behind Kitsune's manipulations and the battle for his soul that has lasted for all eternity.

The idea of this mini-series is very good, and definitely worth expanding on. The execution leaves a bit more to be desired. The plot is paper thin, mostly just an info dump tied around multiple fight scenes, and while Mateus Santolouco's artwork is absolutely phenomenal, the story smacks of too little too late, dropping in at least one new character who should have appeared before now, and the ending is oddly ambiguous as to whether Shredder won or not.

I'd read anything Mateus Santolouco draws, but I'm not sure if I'd read anything he wrote, given this little outing. Maybe a guiding hand from a co-writer might have helped this be a bit more coherent.

Very torn on how to rate this. The artwork was stunning and the first half of this volume packed the punch; I loved this arc for Shredder and the depth it gave him. A nice shake up for the character, I thought. But the second half was messy and confusing and I don't actually think I could verbalize what the conclusion to this story actually was? Like there was too much going on and I couldn't keep it straight?

As a story unto itself this isn't as engaging as it could be. I feel for anyone who encounters this collection having not read the lion's share of the IDW series; I imagine they would feel lost most of the time trying to navigate this.

It also reads like it's at least an issue too long. Shredder's journey is surprisingly short and then the series just becomes meandering battles and characters making the same grandiose proclamations again and again.

What makes this a three star book for me despite all this is the glorious art. This is a beautiful book to look at. I often found myself caught up in one beautifully etched panel after another.

When the art is so good it can make you overlook a somewhat shallow story -- well, it deserves to be mentioned.

This was some of the coolest art I’ve seen in a graphic novel in ages. Really fun story if you’ve been reading the current run of TMNT. Lots of references to the mythos and rewarding scenes of seeing Shredder and Splinter work together. Really glad I read it to expand on my enjoyment of the TMNT series.

Such a beautiful and redemptive piece of a comic. Artwork and writing by Santolouco was fantastic and loved how it made this iconic villain someone to root for.

Here's the deal, I came in cold. I haven't been reading the series. I just really, REALLY liked the title.

That being said, I feel like I followed the story well enough and I loved the art.

I met Santolouco at a convention and this book was at his table. After recently reading The last ronin and LOVING it, I was eager to dive into more TMNT comics and picked this up. I thought this was a one-shot and did not realize that this book fit within a larger story that I hadn't read. I think perhaps a lot of the plot throughout this was lost on me due to not reading the other material. That being said, the concept is cool and I would love to dive into the IDW TMNT series. Santolouco's art should not be undervalued here. It is absolutely gorgeous art and I love his use of purple. It feels like a really nice blend of anime art styles with modern superhero comic art styles that creates a wonderful mixture that is beautiful to look at. I would recommend the book just for the art. I can't really rate this since I feel like I'm missing the proper context about where the characters are currently at.

A brilliant spinoff story about one of the greatest villains in comic book history leading into the ultimate TMNT story arc of issue 100, the end of the City at War arc, that also provides a shocking redemption arc for the Shredder that felt both neccessary and well earned.

Exploring Shredder's twisted past from his own perspective, Shredder in Hell is a brilliant spinoff story with gorgeous artwork to boot. A great read for anyone who wants to learn about the psyche of The Shredder. HOWEVER, this series is deeply connected to the 2011 TMNT series by IDW requiring readers to have read pretty much all of TMNT up to issue 99 and the other brilliant TMNT spinoff mini series, Secret History of the Foot Clan.

So unfortunately, this is not a graphic novel that anyone can just jump into and read. However, if you have the time, read all of TMNT 2011, it's probably the greatest run of TMNT comics ever written.

Oroku Saki has died, but his adventure has not ended!
This story is all over the place, with Shredder fighting his way to redemption through hell. We get to see part of his past, his connection to Takeshi Tatsuo, and just how bonded he is with the Dragon God. Tons of action, and you definitely find yourself rooting for him...
At the end, Kitsune, the love of his life, is able to bond him with the Dragon God fully, and resurrect him. In order for him to return fully to life, he needs the Kira No Ken, the Sword of Vengeance that Kurai currently has AND with the end specifically referencing Volume 23, I'm thinking we will get to see Shredder back in action soon.
Overall, a bit extra, as all non-numbered TMNT Volumes are, but provides a good backstory for if/when Shredder shows back up, somehow alive.
Recommend, but not essential, even for Turtles readers.

I kinda think stories where popular characters go to Hell always *sound* like a good idea but rarely *are* because, while you end up with a lot of fights with cool-looking demons, there isn't a lot of emotional narrative in mowing down monsters with no personalities. Also, I just don't know that Oroku Saki has been developed as a noble or sympathetic character enough for him to be the protagonist here. I think we are trying to turn him face for the larger TMNT story, but it doesn't feel like he solves any of the problems here like the Shredder would, just a generic warrior.

Con grandes dibujos de Santoluoco, la historia se extiende en demasía. Habría estado ok en 3 numeros. No sé como irá a funcionar este intento de hacer de Shredder un nuevo Magneto.

Spectacular art by Santolouco for a story that I found somewhat interesting but rather repetitive and a tad too long.

The journey is real

This is a well thought out journey through the mind and makeup of the SHREDDER. The artwork is beautiful, and it is easy to get trapped in it.

Not great

Started good. And it has a great premise. But by chapter 3, I was so lost. Maybe its just me but I couldn't tell left from right. The art waa good. But that's it.
