A Ghost Too Many

Rate this book
Jodi Weathers was stunned when the mayor of Sandy Shoals offered her the job of police chief. She had grown up along the coast of Georgia and it would mean returning to an area she loved, but her first inclination was to refuse. She didn’t feel qualified even when the mayor described her duties as writing reports and shaking hands.
“The Sheriff’s Department will take care of the real police work,” he assured her. “You’ll be handling public relations.”
At the time the mayor had no warning of the approaching hurricane, and he couldn’t have foreseen finding a dead woman on the beach.
To be fair, Jodi also didn’t mention that she was seeing her ex-husband. Her dead, ex-husband. She knew he was dead because she had gone to his funeral.
Jodi finally convinced herself that she wasn’t crazy, and that what was needed to escape the ghost of her ex-husband was a change of scenery.
But then the second ghost showed up, and that was a ghost too many.

Easy but enjoyable paranormal detective story

I borrowed this book thanks to the Kindle Unlimited subscription that I share with my girlfriend, and I read it between my tablet and phone using the Kindle app.

We have the story of Jodi Weathers, an extremely young policewoman who ends up becoming the chief officer of her small hometown—a town that is suddenly hit by a hurricane, revealing a body in the middle of nowhere.
Jodi not only has great investigative skills, but she also sees dead people, including the ghost of the deceased. The problem for Jodi is that the ghosts don’t help her solve the cases.

This paranormal detective story is a quick read. On the downside, the story takes its time to pick up, but if you have patience, you will quickly enjoy it. The main character, Jodi, may seem like the typical female protagonist who can do everything, but in the end, she is quite likable and engaging.

Is Jodi going crazy or is she just cursed?

This was an engaging paranormal mystery that really sucked me in! Jodi Weathers is a young cop with a back story, when she is surprisingly given the job of Chief of Police in her hometown of Sandy Shoals. Her first day is fraught with issues; a hurricane has just hit the small coastal town of Sandy Shoals and a dead body washes up on the beach. Jodi’s investigative skills are more than the mayor and the other “small town” cronies expected and she keeps throwing a wrench into their plots. Many smalltown-ish characters to keep track, as well as a hunky, smart, bear of a good-looking guy who always has Jodi’s back AND he’s a lawyer at the courthouse works out nicely. Did I forget to mention the paranormal part? Jodi sees dead people…well at first her deceased ex-husband keeps popping in to give his jealous ex-husband two cents. But then the ghost of the dead girl from the beach appears to Jodi has to ask herself “Is she going crazy or is she just cursed? And why can’t these “ghost” help her solve the mystery? Although tagged as humorous, I did not find it funny at all, but I look forward to more in the series by J. Thomas Witcher!

Terrible. Without giving too much away, here's why:

1) Oh. My. God. The. Typos!!! Did ANYONE edit this book? Anyone? At ANY point in the process? This isn't a nitpick; there are SO many errors in this book. And, GLARING errors: spelling, (eg "bond" for "blonde"), grammar errors, punctuation errors, you name it. Like, an immersion stopping typo every 3 pages. It was BRUTAL.

2) It made NO. DAMN. SENSE! WHY did she see ghosts, and how did that affect the story in ANY way? It's never explained WHY she sees ghosts, or how and what led to her being able to, or why they show up, or why they can't answer questions; she just SEES the same two ghosts sometimes......ok. She randomly sees her dead ex husbands ghost. Alright. What's the point? He just shows up, she berates him, he fades away. It's such a baffling, and COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY unneeded aspect of the story.

3) Cliche. The no-nonsense female lead is super cool under fire and outsmarts every one at every turn. Towards the end of the book she is in very real, mortal danger, and she just quips and quips and quips her way through the whole ordeal. This is all secondary to the suspension of disbelief of how a TWENTY FIVE year old, with minimal police training, and practically zero experience becomes the CHIEF OF POLICE of her hometown police force. She makes every right move, befriends all of the exact right people, is wary of exactly every wrong person, catches every break and is in the right place at every right time.

4) Boring as all get out. Nothing happened. There's a murder, but it is treated as a side quest, amongst all of the other pointless plots: the ghosts, her problems with her dad and his wife, the mayors wife being so tough, her not liking her ex husband, etc.

It was a relatively quick read, and even then, I couldn't wait for it to be over.

entertaining

So the beginning is kind of slow, but hang in there. It only gets more entertaining. This book has a lot of great things about it. The heroin is someone who rolls with the punches. She was offered a job as police chief. The kicker, she only has one employee, an officer who’s very set his ways. The more hilarious part of things, awkward things happen to her. She’s haunted by the ghost of her ex-husband… No seriously literally. He won’t go away, and then when a woman is murdered, she’s haunted by her ghost too. But the awkward part is that the woman who died was the ex-husband‘s mistress. There is a lot of other details of this book that unravel. Strained relationship with father, issues with best friend, trying to figure out who killed the victim. This author does a good job, combining suspense with humor, and a bit of romance. My biggest question is if there’s gonna be a sequel to this book. I like hearing about heroines that are tall, strong bold, and able to take charge. this is only a four star instead of the five star read only because the pacing was a bit slow for me. And a bit of the story kind of dragged. But I do love this book. If you’re looking for a mystery to solve, a hilarious, main character, and a town full of secrets, this is definitely the book for you.

A Ghost Too Many blends small-town politics, a dash of Southern charm, and a ghost story that never gets too heavy-handed. I picked this up expecting a quirky mystery and found something a bit more layered, quietly reflective, often funny, and occasionally eerie in ways that felt more emotional than supernatural.

Jodi Weathers is the kind of character you root for not because she's invincible, but because she’s deeply human. Reluctant in her new role as police chief and still haunted, literally and figuratively, by her past, she’s thrust into a situation that’s far messier than anyone expected. The town of Sandy Shoals feels like a character in its own right: familiar, flawed, and hiding more than it lets on.

There’s humor, but it’s subtle. There’s mystery, but it’s character-driven. And best of all, there’s a sense that these ghosts, whether real or imagined, are part of what it means to move forward. I finished the book wanting more time in Jodi’s world, more strange cases, and maybe even a few more ghosts.

“A Ghost Too Many: A Humorous Paranormal Mystery,” by J. Thomas Witcher follows Jodi Weathers, the new police chief of Sandy Shoals, her hometown, where her father (with whom she has a complicated relationship) runs the marina. Before she can even be sworn in, twenty-five-year-old Jodi is hard at work on the job. She loses her belongings during a hurricane while she helps others to evacuate or seek shelter. When the mayor offered Jodi the job, he had assured her that the heavy police work would be done by others. But when a dead body is found at the beach, and the detective on the scene proves to be incompetent, Jodi feels compelled to investigate the woman’s death. Meanwhile, Jodi is haunted by the ghost of her ex-husband, a philandering professor who succumbed to a heart attack. Despite the book’s subtitle, I did not find the story to be humorous. Nevertheless, I found the story and the various characters interesting.

A nicely written mystery set in the coastal Georgia area of the US. I thoroughly enjoyed the well-developed characters and found it hard to put down. I hope there will be sequels as I can see the same characters becoming more and more engaged in mystery solving together as they build back the small police force that was ravaged by a hurricane. The writer’s style is unique and original, which I found very pleasing. Loved the addition of the ghost characters too!

Thoroughly enjoyable, witty, a total hoot from start to finish. I usually read historical fiction, so a ghost story that is at times downright nuts, and at others a good detective yarn, made a refreshing change. I read it in two days, which says more than words can. The only negative side is that now I have to catch up with what I should have been doing instead of reading this book, but I think I got my priorities right.

Not sure....

Not sure how I kept reading this one but I did. It seemed to drag a lot but I kept reading.
The reason why I gave it a 3 star was because of the terrible proof reading they did and the dragging it had.
I also wouldn't state that it's a humorous paranormal. It wasn't.

This was a mystery/paranormal that was fast-paced, and kept me reading way into the night! I admired the character of Jodi, she was quite smart and didn’t take nonsense from anyone!
I do hope the author of this book will continue this series, I would really like to know what happens next! Thanks!

Good story, bad editing

I was excited to find a fun ghost story based in GA\UGA. The story line is good, unfortunately the editing was not. Very distracting.

Meh 2.5 stars. I guess I expected more ghosts with that title and a stronger mystery.

A very down to earth read that's all the more gripping because of it

Fantastic read. Great characters that are so real they crawl off the page and drag you into the story regardless if you want to get involved or not. The force you to do so. A well thought out and well constructed plot about a new female police chief who arrives at her new job just in time for a hurricane to strike and a dead body on the beach. A woman who to her appeared to have been strangled. Without even having been sworn in she finds herself investigating as she is not positive that the main suspect is the real killer. Politics, no real officers to help her (most including the free chief had been arrested), her own demons to fight, a crime ring and the ghosts of her dead husband and the murdered woman haunting her. Can she do what the sheriff's department can't seem to - follow the evidence and get to the truth? A really terrific read and hope there is more to come.
