The Fentons #3

Euphemia and the Unexpected Enchantment

Rate this book

A Regency Romance Novella.

Euphemia Fleet is timid and tiny, on her way to a new life.

Baron Balfour is a giant of a man, wounded by the death of his wife.

Will he terrify her, or will she find the spirit to salve the wounded bear?

Readers may recognise Miss Fleet from Book 2 of The Fentons, Felicity and the Damaged Reputation, and meet again some beloved friends. If not, they can enjoy Euphemia’s story on its own.

Miss Fleet, on her way to join her dear Felicity and her husband, is still fearing that she may be a burden to them. She meets Baron Balfour on the road, and after an accident to her only gown, finds out that she resembles his dead wife in stature when he offers her a change of clothes.

But the shock of seeing Euphemia in the gown brings on an old illness, and she is forced by her kindly nature to stay with him, though his loud voice and blunt conversation terrifies her.

Something stirs in Euphemia as they become acquainted, and she, who has always dreamed of a respectable home of her own, finds she wants more, much more than his grief could ever give her…

Shocked and appalled, she travels on to her friend. But will the Baron let her be?

Reviews for Alicia Cameron:

‘I've read Clarissa and the Poor Relations and loved it - although it wasn't long enough - I wanted more.’ Audrey Harrison, bestselling author of The Captain’ Wallflower.

‘So wonderful to find a clean romance that is witty and lively as well.’

‘A worthy successor to Georgette Heyer.’

Alicia Cameron is a crime writer with another indulgence - I have always enjoyed the work of Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer, loving the Regency period and the romance, but especially the wit of the authors.

My interest in crime probably started with the awful kleptomania of my family, stealing these books from each others shelves.

I'm not to be confused with the other Alicia Cameron. My Regency romances have very little raunch and a great deal of silliness.

Regency England. Thanks to GR friend/ reviewer
HBW 2020 who led me to this book. Kisses only 4 star
story.

Richard a huge man & baron & tiny "pocket Venus"
Euphemia met by chance. He seemed overwhelming
and bigger than life. She had completed a 10 year
stint as companion to an anxious/ complaining lady.
The H + h were respectively 50 & nearly 40, and he
eventually called her "Fawn" and she used "Bear."

I liked their personalities, also the developing affection.
Fawn assumed something about him, but Bear made it
right. I would have enjoyed more time with these 2.

Way too short, and it's a shame as there was a great story with huge H, and the sweet older h. This an autumn romance, where the H is entranced at first sight, and the heroine is overwhelmed, by sexual attraction. She's just shy of 40, and has no experience so runs away. It would have made a great steamy novel, it was still a good novella just no steam.

This is a novella, but there was decent character development. It was nice seeing some of the couples from the previous installments and I was glad to see Miss Fleet get her own HEA. Her hero was also so lovely.

This was a great novella.

Euphemia has a chance encounter with Balfour who is immediately taken in by her small stature which reminds him of his late wife. Was there a bit of insta-love here? Of course. But was it compelling? Absolutely. Very sweet and swoony with characters I could immediately feel connected to which is a feat for a novella.

There were also a bunch of other short stories in the version I read from Kindle Unlimited which was a great introduction to Cameron and I'm now revisiting her longer works.

Consider me a new fan.

Delightful

I think this might rate as one of my favourite Regency romances. It's a rare change to see the down trodden mouse of a companion in the role of romantic heroine, and I enjoyed every minute of it! All of Alicia Cameron's characters are well drawn, which is one of the reasons her writing is so enjoyable, and Miss Euphemia Fleet.is a delight! Thoroughly recommend!

Beauty and the Bear

Just and old fairy story revamped. Not bad but lacks that something to make it special. Worth a look but only if it's free.

No longer a mouse

Miss Fleet was raised in the church to be a mouse. Neither seen nor heard. When her father died, she went to live with her sister. When the mother-in-law came, there was no room for tiny mousey Miss Fleet. She went to live with a distant relative as a unpaid companion. She stayed for ten years. Finally leaving to join a newly married relative who actually cares about her. In route she encounters a giant of a man who is also a baron.

I’m not quite sure how I feel about this one. It is quite short so the romance is very rushed it is also focused on Felicity half the time I didn’t really feel connected to Miss Fleet and Lord Balfour. I thought his actions in the beginning we quite high handed. Contains: a few mild swear words and kisses

Very short but sweetly perfect

I was so happy to see mousy Miss Fleet find love, especially in such an unexpected way. The shortness of the story kept the plot on point and allowed for the romance to bloom quickly as might fit a slightly older couple anyway. Very enjoyable. If you're not reading this series in sequence though you'll miss out on much.

This was a unique premise and I enjoyed it quite well, but felt like it could have been developed much
much, more and would have been even more enjoyable, it resolved too quickly although satisfyingly. This is a quick read, and put a very large smile on my face as I traveled alongside Euphemia to her happy ending.

Wonderful story

What a different and completely lovely novella. Love happens to 2 very sweet older people, who find love & passion and companionship in an unlikely event. Just adored this tale.

2.5*. This is too long for a short story and too short and underdeveloped for a novella. The narrative seems both rushed and unreasonable in the story it tries to tell. The characters had potential, but no space for us to get to know them.

A funny and sweet romance.

I love a witty and well written tale and this is one of the best! A shy, old fashioned thirty something lady falls in love with a huge, tactless bear of a man to create a happily ever after.

loved it! Outstanding!

My only complaint, too short. There were times I laughed out loud. There were times I was near tears. What a wonderful book! Great premise. Ok, another Cinderella story, but much better. Enjoy!

a nice change in a story line

I really like stories where an overlook spinster finds love. Never understood this obsession with young girls. Nice to have a mature woman and man meet and make a match.

Another interesting Fenton story

I like the quirky relationships built in this story. The author is very good at describing the intricacy of relationships in this time period.

Such a cute story. It seemed kind of simple and sweet. I don't know what to say. I knew it would end well.

I really enjoy reading this author's work. She usually writes in a style that holds your attention, is funny and has a few twists.
I didn't really find that with this story. It was pretty ho-hum.

(4.5 stars) - Miss Fleet's happily-ever-after finds her

This is book 3 of The Fentons trilogy, but can stand alone - though at least reading "Felicity and the Damaged Reputation" will enhance the story (and it's a lot of fun besides)

Sweet, timid Euphemia Fleet is finally free from having to endure any more of Lady Ellingham's abuse. She's on her way to live with her very good friend, Felicity, & Felicity's new husband, Lord Sebastian Durant, on their estate.

At first, things are a little confusing, but Lord Balfour has that effect on people, lol. As events transpire, the puzzle pieces fall into place and little by little, we begin to make sense of the whole.

After so many years of misery, Miss Fleet cannot see a happily-ever-after for herself and insists on remaining on the sidelines of life, but those who love her won't allow her to let her opportunity slip past.

The story is delightfully reminiscent of a fairytale & most enjoyable.

*Clean romance level: passionate kisses

I've read every one of this author's period romances and loved every one. This story is no exception and I read it in two sittings.
Euphemia is no teenager ingénue, although this forty odd lady's maid/companion is no woman of the world. Nor is the man who eventually captures her heart a handsome young buck but rather a great bear of a man with a loud voice.
If you're look for a gentle read with a satisfying ending, this is the book for you.
