Many women are sent to Ashgate Prison, but not all of them come out.
Ever since their alcoholic mother’s suicide when they were kids, Josephine Taylor will do anything to protect her little sister Julie. When Julie nearly kills her husband while defending herself from a violent assault, Joey takes the fall for her sister. But when her brother-in-law dies unexpectedly in the hospital, Joey is convicted of a murder she didn't commit.
In Ashgate Prison, Joey is forced to learn to survive. The women are dangerous. Cruel. Angry. She isn't a violent woman and the other women know it. Now, Joey must learn to take control of the women before they end up killing her. How far must she go to survive? Even if she manages to get through her sentence, will she ever be the same again? But Julie has a secret … and maybe prison is the very place she wants Joey to be.
Our story takes place in a prison located on a remote island. No way in. No way out. Joey has found herself incarcerated for a crime she didn’t commit. How will she prove her innocence when the person who knows the truth has vanished? But that is only the beginning of her problem. She must figure out how to survive her new life behind bars.
This story is full of unbelievable emotions and amazing characters. An intense story that has you on the edge of your seat. A story of betrayal and love in the oddest of places. This book is a steady paced read that goes into a world many of us could not imagine. With horrors to give you nightmares.
Overall this book is a unique story with dark characters. Taking place in the underbelly of a women’s correctional institution gives this story a deep and dangerous path for our characters. This book does have girl on girl sexual encounters, but written very well and smooth. Almost clean. This book has some violent scenes that may not be for everyone. So I warn you. I recommend this book to those who love a good drama.
As usual, Amber Thielman doesn't pull any punches with her latest book. Ashgate is a dark and gritty look at life in a woman's prison through the eyes of Joey, the lead female character. Realistic and engrossing this book is not easy to read and it's not one you will find yourself putting down either. This author really knows her craft and I promise you this one will knock your socks off. The storytelling is so good it doesn't matter if the subject matter resonates with you. There are books I won't read because on a personal level I may struggle to read them. But Amber's writing is so solid that personal bias goes out the window. I am looking forward to what comes next
Wow, this book was not what I was expecting, so intense and emotional. A very powerful read as Joey learns the pain of betrayal from the person closest to her. To be thrust into the prison system when she was trying to protect her sister, to be an innocent in a place where society’s norms don’t apply, pushes her to the limit and shows her how strong she really is. A book pull of suspense, emotional taxing scenes and the hint of happiness!!
The writing itself was good, albeit, honestly, a bit boring.
But this FMC confused the hell out of me. Yeah, it sucks that her sister seemingly framed and abandoned her, but why is she planning a jailbreak and a murder over an 18m-3 year sentence? why would a random nurse she'd never met before risk everything to help her escape prison? That part of the plot was one of the dumbest things I've ever read.
