This book brings together various aspects of the turbulent period (from arrival of the Europeans on Indian soil and the establishment of British rule in India to the day India won independence and the early years of freedom) in a systematic and succinct major and important details and milestones are effectively discussed while several relevant but little known details are also highlighted. It is not just the mainstream freedom struggle that has been considered; the disparate efforts small but significant of several groups have also been discussed. The political and socio-economic developments that have influenced the growth of modern India have been dealt with in independent chapters.
A short, concise history of India, since Europeans started arriving in India. It does not contain much about Mughal expansion; however, some knowledge about terms used in the Mughal system is a must to understand the essence completely, especially for the chapters covering the period of 1600-1850.
It does not offer a detailed explanation of some of the later events in history, especially those from the post-independence period. However, for a quick understanding of the events in the last 400 years or so, this is an excellent book.
Book is very nice if you want a brief idea of Indian Modern history. It started from the envasion of portugese, dutch, britishers and the french (Europeans) in India and their motive and strategies to conquer India.
It also focuses how the feeling on nationalism evolved and it contributed towards the India's struggle of freedom. And book ended with the work, strategies and developments of the current NDA 2 government.
Although everything in this book is in a brief manner but provides a overall perspective of complete indian modern history.

A must read book for Modern Indian History (Prelims - UPSC CSE). And you have to read line by line. It's basically a compilation of notes by an IPS officer while he was preparing for the exam.
This book have little updates and contain extra chapters related to after nehruvian era. It is more factual than analytical so it is good for quick revision if you are preparing for competitive exams.
