Many of his books deal with war and showed the German human side of things as experienced by their soldiers and families at home, for instance Das geschenkte Gesicht (The Mutilated Face), which deals with a German soldier's recovery after his sledge ran over a personnel mine and destroyed his face, and how this affected his relationship with his wife at home. It places no judgment on the German position in the war and simply deals with human beings in often desperate situations, doing what they were forced to do under German military law.
Der Arzt von Stalingrad (The Doctor of Stalingrad) made him famous and was adapted into a movie in 1958. Some 83 million copies sold of his 155 novels made him the most popular German novelist of the postwar era and many of his novels were translated and sold through book clubs. He is buried in Cologne.

Dit is het verhaal van een miljonairszoon, Bob Barreis, die denkt dat hij met alles wegkomt, en gek genoeg lukt hem dat meestal nog ook, met de hulp van zijn rijke familie en de mensen in hun entourage. Maar dan begint hij echt te ver te gaan, en sterven en mensen. De eerste heeft hij wel niet echt zelf vermoord, maar laten verbranden in een racewagen waaruit hij zelf uitgesprongen is voor die tegen een rotswand te pletter sloeg. Deze gebeurtenis is de aanzet tot nog meer doden, waarbij Bob Barreis telkens betrokken is.
Uiteindelijk echter stort hij zich zover in het verderf dat het zijn eigen leven kost.
Eigenlijk niet zo'n leuk boek. Allerlei afschuwelijke en perverse daden worden beschreven. Het eigenaardige is dat ik niet inzie hoe zulke lectuur mij iets zou kunnen bijbrengen, of voor ontspanning of lekker leesplezier zou zorgen, en toch heb ik het boek uitgelezen, omdat ik steeds zat te wachten welke daad Bob Barreis fataal zou worden.

It was more of a novel than to learn those "life lessons". I finished in couple of days but it's nothing special. Mostly learned how immoral people are when they could talk of the bullshit for which they could potentially get in trouble.
