Summer of Reading 2019 – Day 6

Miracles happen in the Imperium of Man. But what about when they happen to you? That's what Jacen Hertz must discover when he survives a catastrophe and finds himself under suspicion by the implacable Adeptus Arbites.

READ IT BECAUSE
Disappear into a world of mysterious events, sinister circumstances, suspicious lawbringers and a man caught up in things he doesn't understand even as his past catches up with him.

THE STORY
Strange things are happening in Praxis Hive. Miracles are occurring – like a blind Astra Militarum trooper who can suddenly see again. But where there is light, inevitably there is darkness – and a corpse with its eyes missing may just have a link to the so-called miracle… All that ordinary citizens, like manufactorum worker Jacen Hertz, can do is pray to the God-Emperor and hope for the best. But when a miracle happens to Jacen, he ends up in more danger than he could have ever imagined…

Jacen Hertz might not find it easy to pray to the Emperor, but he works hard and loves his wife and children. As tension rises within Praxis Hive amid talk of disappearances and mutilated bodies, Jacen’s past comes back to haunt him when he miraculously survives a terrible disaster only to fall under the suspicion of the enforcers.

This is 40k as domestic horror, the usual ‘there is only war’ stylings forming the distant backdrop to a story set far from the battlefield but no less grim and dark for it. For some this might verge on too dark, but there’s no doubt it’s a powerful, evocative representation of 40k.

Included in the Summer of Reading collection, no doubt to get the reader to look at the 'Warhammer Horror' new section. This is okay, but in the 41st Millenium there is so much horror and grief, this read as another 'normal' Warhammer 40k short story from the view of a normal hab worker. Fun, but nothing new at this stage.
