Neva Grey is looking forward to spending a quiet Christmas with her family in the cosy cottage they’ve rented in the picture-postcard village of Wyntersleap. Nestled between rolling hills and a gently burbling river, it’s going to be idyllic.

Except it’s not. Torrential rain causes the river to burst its banks and the quaint little village isn’t quite so cosy with water lapping at the doors. Add to that a power cut and a sudden blizzard and Christmas is looking bleak ... until gorgeous Adam Wynter invites them all to Wynter House.

Although not everyone is happy to share the ancestral home. Adam’s elder brother, Rafe is less than pleased. Their grandmother, Olivia extends a grudging welcome. And for Carruthers, the oddly arrogant butler, unexpected guests are a Christmas surprise he could do without. Especially one as troublesome as Neva’s eight-year-old niece.

But something’s not quite right at Wynter House. What is Rafe intent on hiding behind the locked doors of the old barn? And what really happened to his first wife? It’s a good thing Neva has a sense of humour. She’s going to need it this Christmas at Wynter House.

This is book one in the Wyntersleap series but it can be read as a standalone. The Wyntersleap series is interlinked with the Merriment Bay series and several characters appear in both series.

… she was a little odd for an eight-year-old. She had already decided to be a ghost and demon hunter when she grew up. Buffy of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, a series she had watched with her mum, was her role model. Her clothes, which were mainly black, had to have pockets for her to store her mini flashlight, garlic, bottle of Holy water and set of knives. The garlic, knives and bottle were plastic. The 'Holy' water was from the tap, but Sasha had a vivid imagination, so none of that mattered to her. Her footwear of choice were high top Converse trainers but her one small nod to femininity were that they were black and silver glitter, because according to Sasha, every girl needs a bit of sparkle in their lives, even vampire slayers.

As far as she was concerned, the chemistry between them right now made the Big Bang look like a firework fizzling out.

Every book of Emily Harvale’s that I’ve ever picked up has been good fun, I adore her wit and clever levity, and if you are paying attention – she tosses in sudden nimble dashes and subtle nips of grin producing irony for an added treat. Christmas at Wynter House was a lively yet pleasant read that kept me smiling and engaged throughout. The characters were relatable and realistically prone to a culture clash with mischief, quick banter, innuendo, eye-rolling, thoughtless reactions, and rude blurting – which are common everyday occurrences in my vicinity anyway. This delightfully penned tale kicked off a new series and I will be eagerly awaiting more of the same from this gifted scribe.

Emily Harvale is the queen of the cozy romance! What is a cozy romance you might ask? It is the romantic cousin of the cozy mystery. Quaint small town vives. Charming quirky characters. A touch of humor. a heartwarming story that leaves you feeling all gooey and happy inside! Emily’s storytelling is so descriptive and magical, I am always ready to pack my bags and head to whatever small town she is writing about. Cannot think of a better place to spend Christmas then Wyntersleap floods and all.

Neva is starting a new chapter in her life, but before she does that she spending Christmas with her family in a cute cottage in a quaint small town. Neva was a little prickly and perhaps a little too blunt, but I really liked her. Her family was great, her parents were so supportive, her sister was entertaining, but her niece Sasha stole the show. Sasha is a precocious eight-year-old obsessed with all things ghosts and zombies. Sasha’s obsession was elevated when the family ended up spending Christmas in Wynter House. Nothing like a big old house with secret passages and a scary butler to feed one’s ghost obsession. The romance in the story was Sweet and slow to develop. Once again Miss Harvale has written a whimsical story full of well drawn engaging characters. Cannot wait to see what’s in store for these characters in the next book in the series and I am eager to dive in to the intertwined series set in Merriment Bay.

5☆ A Christmas Must Read!

Every time I see a new book by Emily Harvale I get super excited, as i know I'm in for a treat. Once again ​Emily has written a gem and Christmas at Wynter House is a cracker of a read!

Neva and her best friend have just parted ways selling their home together, now her bestie is moving in with her fiancé.
Neva is about to start a new chapter in her life and embark on a new journey.

However the only journey she will be making right now it to Wyntersleap.
It's Christmas and what better way to spend it then with her family in a gorgeous cottage.

However things don't always go to plan.
when a storm threatens the safety of the cottages, all of the residents have no choice but to retreat to safety in Wynter House where the mysterious and very handsome Wynter brothers live.

Oh I absolutely adored all of the characters.
They are such a quirky, fun bunch they are perfect for the story. Once again Emily has written superb characters that are memorable, relatable and very endearing.

​Christmas at Wynter House is the perfect festive read. It literally has a sprinkle of everything, mystery, drama, mayhem, romance, laugh out loud moments, family drama, friendships, community spirit, oh and not to forget a stunning location.
It's a Heart Warming, Cosy, Funny, Enchanting, Christmas Read, that will melt your heart and leave you wanting more.

I can't recommend reading this Gorgeous Book Enough.

Emily Harvale is a romantic writing genius, this book kept me wanting more, I even want to start reading the interlinked series, instantly, as I just want more of these settings, characters.

There are moments of drama with early power cuts and flood risks, there are a pair of ridiculously sexy brothers, there are secret passage ways, a daring rescue of Tempest, and it was driving me mad throughout to discover just what was in the old barn.

I started reading this reasonably late at night, and by the time I finished a chapter in bed, i was wondering why I really had to sleep as I just wanted to continue turning the pages. It's a book that really did cast a spell over me and although life sort of tried to get in the way, I read it in a day, and just couldn't' get enough of it.

The blurb to be honest covers the plot really well so no point me touching on the story too much, but safe to say that with both the Wynter Family, and the Grey family we have two sets of characters that have already touched my heart.

From 8 year old niece, Sasha, who is obsessed with ghosts, zombies and death, as well as her new puppy (who is adorable), to Carruthers the butler at Wynter House and his expressive eyebrows, to Neva and her foot in mouth approach to conversations with Rafe Wynter, including making it clear how much she fancies his brother! Then there are the soul sucking gossips in the cottage next to Neva, the rather cold Olivia Wynter, and then the wonderfully generous surprise gifts from Neva's parents.

There are just plenty of fabolous characters. And that is before we get to Wyntersleap village, which had is not been for the torrential rain, river getting rather full, and ginormous hailstones, would have been incredibly picturesque. I hope we get to visit it in the Summer where I'm sure it would be shown off to its best.

And the day trip into Merriment Bay, which is the setting for the author's next serial, has whetted my interest even further for reading that!

I could probably continue to wax lyrical about everything in the book, but honestly whether you are a fan of the author in which case you may agree that this is amongst her best work, or new to Emily Harvale, in which case you have picked a fabulous place to start - I would urge you to read this if you love your women's fiction and rom com.

So easy to read, and get absorbed into the story, this is one Christmas Cracker of a read, and amazingly all the action actually takes place over Christmas, which is surprisingly refreshing from some of my festive reads this year so far!

Neva is spending Christmas with her family having left her flat and her best friend. She is intending on starting her own business. The family of her parents, sister and husband and daughter have taken a cottage in Wynstersleap. On her way down Neva literally bumps into Adam Wynter who she takes an instant liking to. when she later meets his brother Rafe her temper flies and she even blames him for the bad weather! When the weather goes from bad to worse, the family have to decide whether to stay or go and staying is the most likely and safest option until the only place to go is Wynter house- the home of Adam and Rafe. Christmas spent in a Dowton abbey setting is rather more than an education. Especially for an eight year old who is fascinated with ghosts and zombies! I really enjoyed this but did think that at time Neva was pushing things rather with her brusqueness. An easy, uplifting seasonal story of life and love and how things can turn out rather differently from how you ever expected them to be. One to leave you with a smile and thoughts of mistletoe, log fires and that warm Christmassy feeling.

I love Emily’s books and what’s better is that she has written one in perfect time for Christmas. If this doesn’t get you in a festive, romantic mood then I don’t know what else will.

I could really feel the cold and crisp winter air throughout as well as visualise Wynter House in it’s splendour. The author writes of the most idyllic settings and even though the weather is against the occupant’s of the village, it still doesn’t spoil the community spirit.

The Wynter family and staff are a varied bunch of characters of which, I found myself being drawn to them the more I got to know them. Neva I loved but her niece more than a few times steals the spotlight throughout the story which certainly put a smile on my face.

There is plenty going on throughout the novel that covers friendship, relationships, romance, family, community, there is no way that you couldn’t be anything other than hooked.

Christmas At Wynter House is a fun and charming read that entertained and left me feeling all warm and cosy inside. Perfect reading for this time of year that will have you pop on the fire and snuggle up on the sofa while you lose yourself into the story. A highly engaging read and can’t wait for more in the series.

Picked this to read because it was free on Amazon Unlimited. Good enough story, but I read a lot of romantic novels of this sort, and this is just not one I’d recommend.

I found the dialogue completely over-the-top and unbelievable, and the general writing is just not great. It needed a much stronger edit, as it’s peppered with completely unnecessary sentences like:

“It was like something out of Downton Abbey, a series she had watched on TV and one that had been made into a movie very recently.”

I almost stopped reading after 3 chapters, and really only made myself push through because I hate leaving books unfinished.

Plus what the heck was that ending?? I felt like the author missed out a whole chapter, the most crucial romantic scene in the whole book, and I felt completely cheated.

This is book one of a three book series and what a joy and entertaining story it has been. I’ve thoroughly loved every second of it. I’m relatively new to Emily Harvale books but she is fast becoming a favourite, to the point that I want to read all of her books.

I’ve loved the characters in this story, to begin with I couldn’t decide which brother I wanted Neva to end up with, Rafe or Adam, I mean both of them are good catches but at the same time both very different. I do believe that Neva ended up with the right man though, and no I’m not going to say which one it was, you’ll just have to find out for yourself by reading the book.

Anyway it’s been a fun story, plenty of drama, entertainment and laugh out loud moments, oh and eight year old Sasha (Neva niece) is quite the unique little girl, some of the situations she gets in to, oh and I love her dog, who’s name has slipped by memory at right this minute.

I’m so glad that I’ve not seen the end of these characters yet as I’m so not ready to say bye bye to them yet, yay bring on books two and three.

If ever there was a book that would get you into the festive mood, then Christmas at Wynter House by Emily Harvale is that book.

​Neva Grey is entering a new phase of her life. Her best friend is getting married and moving out which leads them both to sell their flat, and with nothing tying her to the city anymore, Neva is embarking on a new career with her mobile hair and beauty service. Neva has plenty of decisions to make but that can all take a back seat until after Christmas where she is meeting up with her family in a cosy cottage in the picture-perfect village of Wyntersleap. But it isn't long before the weather makes staying in the cottage a little more dangerous than anyone had planned and the inhabitants of the village find themselves moving up to the big house on the hill where there are plenty of rumours about the brooding man of the house, Rafe, although his younger brother seems like a lot of fun. Throw in an eight-year-old obsessed with zombies, a mischievous dog, a secret hiding in the barn, and who knows what magic could happen at Wynter House? Sometimes the most unexpected things happen at the perfect moment ...

Charming and appealing from beginning to end, I fell in love with Neva and her warm-hearted family and couldn't wait to find out what was in store for them. The setting is beautiful even when the weather ruins their plans and I could easily imagine the waterfall and the cottages with perfect clarity because the author is excellent at painting a picture. Rafe seemed so guarded and defensive so it was lovely to watch him open up slowly, and this community of quirky characters certainly kept me on my toes and made me laugh along the way.

CHRISTMAS AT WYNTER HOUSE by Emily Harvale is a wonderful story that places love and family at the centre of the magic and I look forward to reading more from this author.

Why on earth haven’t I read one of Emily Harvale’s books before? I’ll certainly be reading one again, because I thoroughly enjoyed this one – great characters, a vivid sense of place, a bit of drama, a touch of mystery, plenty of gentle humour, a rather lovely developing romance, a focus on family and fresh starts, and quite wonderfully Christmassy. What’s not to like, eh?

I don’t really need to outline the story, because the blurb covers as much as you need to know. But it’s a story with plenty of twists and turns, and so well told. I really liked the author’s writing style, especially her use of dialogue – she’s particularly good at the family relationships, capturing the warmth and love in every exchange, and drawing each individual in such perfect detail.

But the whole book is overflowing with well-drawn characters, every one playing their part in the story, with a real sense of community. I particularly liked young niece Sasha with her obsession with ghosts and zombies (and her unfortunate inclination to voice and repeat overheard conversations), but also the two elderly ladies (and their dogs), the gossipy pair next door, and the wonderful Carruthers the butler with his expressive eyebrows (just don’t call him Archie!). Even the animals are so well drawn: Sasha’s large and uncontrollable puppy plays his part in the drama, and the spoilt cat needing some gentle care, casting a different light on some of the characters, was a really lovely touch.

I’ll admit it did take a while for Neva to win me over – but then Rafe Wynter has the same issue at first too. She firmly sets her cap at his brother Adam, and does rather rub Rafe up the wrong way – she’s a tad snippy, and has an unfortunate habit of voicing her thoughts out loud, with little thought for any offence she might cause. But she very much grew on me, and when the entire community find themselves holed up at Wynter House for the Christmas period (there are worse places!) we watch the relationships develop, with a rather nice touch of the unexpected.

I enjoyed the phone conversations with Neva’s friend too, who’s having a difficult Christmas of her own, reflecting on developments and filled with a real warmth and affection. And the book’s whole sense of place is really excellent – Wyntersleap with its cosy pub, small shop and cluster of cottages, the reservoir and waterfalls and the fast flowing river, the ancestral home at Wynter House, all vividly drawn. I equally liked the introduction to Merriment Bay – again, beautifully drawn, and the perfect location for more stories to come.

This really was the loveliest story to escape into for an afternoon and allow the world to disappear – I’m just rather sorry it took me so long to try one of the author’s books. Definitely recommended by me.

Times are changing for Neva Grey. Her flatmate and best friend, Jo, is engaged to her boyfriend and Neva can’t afford to buy her out of the flat they’ve shared for the last ten years. So the flat has been sold and their lives are following different paths. After Christmas, which she’s spending with her parents, her sister and her family, Neva plans to start her own business. Her parents have booked a cottage at the idyllic sounding village of Wintersleap, run by the Wynter brothers, Adam and Rafe. Neva’s unscheduled ‘meetings’ with Adam and then Rafe Wynter are the first of many mishaps.

Instead of the relaxed Christmas they were all looking forward to in picturesque surroundings, the relentless rain is causing problems for the village, including power cuts. The river is fast becoming dangerously high, threatening to burst its banks. Rafe and Adam do their best to make sure everyone is safe, then to cap it all, an unexpected blizzard means the village is cut off from the outside world. With no way of getting home and the river inching ever closer to the cottages, it seems the only safe place to spend Christmas is Wynter House.

Jo is having her own problems as the phone conversations between her and Neva highlight. There’s a great sense of affection and friendship between them which is lovely. It’ll be interesting to see how thing work out in the long term for them both.

Christmas At Wynter House has a host of delightful, well drawn and diverse characters, including the Neva’s eight year old niece, Sasha, who is obsessed by vampires, ghosts and ghouls, and has talked her parents into adopting a mischievous rescue Alaskan Malamute named Tempest. Neva is a character that grows on you. She has a tendency to forget to engage her brain before she opens her mouth, which causes her embarrassment on more than one occasion…but with two gorgeous brothers on the scene who could blame her.

There’s lots going on, including village gossips speculating on the fate of Rafe’s ex-wife and why he’s being so secretive, determined to keep everyone away from the dangerously old barn, which actually doesn’t look that old or dangerous. A fun and festive read.

I have been a fan of Emily's work for a fair while now. I love the way she combines romance with humour and a side helping of drama. I read the synopsis for 'Christmas At Wynter Hall' and it certainly sounded like just my kind of read. I couldn't wait to get hold of a copy and hide myself away until I finished reading it. I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'Christmas At Wynter Hall' but more about that in a bit.
It didn't take me long at all to get into this story. In fact by the time I got to the bottom of the first page, I knew that I would find it extremely difficult to put this book to one side. If I had to put the book down for whatever reason, then I immediately looked forward to being able to pick the book up again. I made the fatal mistake of starting to read this book shortly before going to bed and I got to wrapped up in the story that I ended up reading into the wee small hours of the morning. I reluctantly put the book to one side to get some sleep but even whilst I was trying to go to sleep I found that I couldn't stop thinking about the characters and about the storylines. I binge read the book over the space of a couple of days. I got to the end of the book far quicker than I had anticipated, which was a bit of a shame. I was enjoying the book so much that I just didn't want the story to end.
'Christmas At Wynter House' is well written but then I wouldn't expect anything else from Emily Harvale. She has a warm writing style that will draw you into the story and make you feel right at home and among friends. I was drawn into the story from the first word on the first page. I became completely wrapped up in the story to the effect that I lost all track of time and I shut out everything else out so I could solely focus on the story. Emily writes so convincingly and realistically that I felt as though I was part of the story myself and another character in the cast so to speak.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'Christmas At Wynter House' and I would recommend it to other readers. I can't wait to read more of Emily's work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 4* out of 5*.

This is a typically cosy Christmas scene - a country cottage, Mum baking, just what Neva needs to decide what she is going to do next and more importantly where. The last thing she needs is a man but when she nearly runs hunky Adam off the road, she is unprepared for the strength of her feelings. These feelings are brought into question, however, when she crosses paths with Adam's taciturn brother.
There is romance and mystery all set against the backdrop of an idyllic village. When the river floods, Christmas might have to be cancelled until Adam Wynter comes to the rescue with an invitation to Wynter House. This might just open up a whole new can of worms and Neva has to decide who and what she really wants.

I just love Emily Harvale and her lovely stories. They are fast but good books to read and you get so drawn into their storylines that you don’t want to stop. Neva and her family are going to Wynteraleap for Christmas as they have rented a cottage. Only once she gets there, she hits the handsome Adams car thus putting a dent in her car. Then once her sister and her family arrive there new puppy falls into the river and has to be rescued by the bad tempered Rafe. The river is high causing issues and Neva and her family find themselves at Wynter House until the waters recede only it’s not going to happen anytime soon and Neva and her family as well as many of the local villagers are stuck at Wynter House for Christmas. I really enjoyed this story but Neva was too mouthy for me and it seemed she got into trouble frequently with Rafe. It also didn’t feel really Christmassy of a book. But it was still lovely all the same.

Enh... ho hum...



I love rom-coms, romance novels, and love stories. So I read a lot of them. This is great fun for me, but it does mean that my own personal "market" is oversaturated. It's going to take a truly great romance to get more than three stars. In case you are interested:

While this is a nice Christmassy story I found it incredible that Rafe would be interested in Neva as she made herself as unlikable as possible. There seems to be a problem with some movies and books since the late 2000s where the bad boy or girl is so awful that redemption and love are quite unbelievable. Beauty and the Beast/Pride and Prejudice, etc have characters that evolve and are worth redemption, not like some of the more modern attempts where the horrible actions really challenge the belief in redemption. This book was better than some, but it still didn't convince me that Neva was worthwhile for Rafe to consider as his love.

I wanted a cosy, festive book and I got one! I didn't realize how time flew when I was reading this book! Now, let me be clear: the story isn't _that great_, but I am a sucker for Christmas books set in the British countryside, so I enjoyed it no matter what. A beautiful mansion, snow, Christmas (2 handsome men, lol) and a community. At this time of the year, I am specially in love with these elements, so it was easy for me to get engrossed. Some things were a bit ridiculous, but it's a Christmas book, so of course they were. Nevertheless, 4 stars because as I said, I didn't realize how time flew.

A fabulous book

Well, this book deserves it's 5* rating I could not put it down.
In fact I stayed awake all night reading it as I could not put it down !!
The characters, descriptions, humour all pulled me in to this lovely well written story and can't wait to read the next book.

I have got to around chapter 4 of this book and I'm struggling to want to finish it. The amount of dialogue feels like padding to hit a word count and the repetitive "rolled her eyes" "did the thing with her eyes" was just becoming irritating. It's a real shame as clearly many people have enjoyed it. Maybe I'll come back to it another time.

I am enjoying the first two books in this series. The heroine is leaving the big city of London and moving to a small village by the sea. Falling in love was not on Neva’s list for this Christmas! But sometimes there are powers out of our control. A delightful Christmas book and I have already started book two!

A great little story, easy reading. Just the perfect amount of festivity for reading in December, but not too heavy to enjoy any other time of year. Now I’m off to find the next in the series.
