One man running from his past, two women he’s attracted to, and a peculiar town that won’t let him go.
Matthew Sadler rides his ’77 Harley into Happenstance, intent on passing through, but people and events conspire to prevent his leaving.
The elderly Barlow sisters consider Matt their knight on a motorcycle. Matt is entranced by Roni, the other lodger at the Happenstance Hotel who bears an uncanny resemblance to Matt’s beloved, deceased wife. The young doctor in town, Paula Percy, adores Matt’s motorcycle. However, she is suspicious of the woman from the hotel.
As the days pass, the quaint little town, with its unique residents, begins to show its sinister side. When evidence of multiple thefts leads to Matt’s door, he must deal with a mystery and yet more false accusations.
Do the old diaries of Amanda Rutherford Barlow hold the answers Matt so desperately seeks? Will Happenstance finally let him go, or does he have a reason to stay?

Holy cow! THE ROAD TO HAPPENSTANCE is filled with mystery at its finest! Once I started reading, it was very hard to put down. The twists and turns kept me reading late into the night and I had to know what was going to happen. THE ROAD TO HAPPENSTANCE by Janice L Dick is one heck of a crazy ride. It takes place in a small town who has a motto, Happenstance, A Town You Can Trust.

The characters are very interesting, quite the oddball mix, and held my attention throughout the story. THE ROAD TO HAPPENSTANCE is a total page turner and once I started I couldn’t stop. Janice L Dick captures your heart from the very first page and never lets it go. How can you not get caught up in all their lives? Everything you can possibly think of happening to these people, does and at times your heart will be shattered. Can a charming little town and their residents be the answer to Matthew’s troubled soul? After losing his wife five years ago and his job as a teacher after being accused of something he didn’t do, Matt can’t seem to find his place in life anymore. When he meets Roni, he begins to have hope once again.

Janice L Dick takes her time introducing you to each of the characters and their problems and how they are feeling. I immediately felt as if I knew them all and was right there at the dining room table hashing things out. In no time, I was totally sucked in to their lives and the issues they were dealing with. The plot is very interesting and had me turning the pages late into the night. I have never heard of or read this author before but after reading THE ROAD TO HAPPENSTANCE. I’m looking forward to reading Janice L Dick’s future stories. Be prepared not to do anything else once you start reading this heartbreaking and hopeful tale. I found myself thinking about all of these wonderful characters long after I finished reading. I’m going to keep my review short as I’m afraid I’m going to give something away.

The Road To Happenstance
By: Janice L. Dick

*REVIEW* ☆☆☆☆
The Road To Happenstance is a charming story of, well, happenstance, or what you might call serendipity, when the hero, Matt, happens upon this quirky town. He's running from something, but what? Did chance or fate bring him to this place? Either way, Happenstance is coincidentally a place of help and healing for the lost and wounded souls, like Matt, who don't know where they are going. Through interactions with the sometimes mysterious and somewhat locaquios townspeople, Matt feels hope for a brighter future, and the process of healing begins. Bit by bit, we learn more about these characters and how their experiences shaped their personalities. I enjoyed getting to know Happenstance and its residents. This story is a bit of mystery, drama, fate, hope and trust, and the combination equals a delightful read. I will read more from author Janice L. Dick.

Running away from his sorry problems, widower Matt “happens” upon the village of Happenstance to find his destiny tied up in the lives of small-town characters embroiled in love and loathing, betrayal and fidelity, charity and greed—and, perhaps in the end most important of all, skepticism and faith.

One reason this novel grabbed my attention and retained it all the way through to the end is the proficient intertwining of several plot lines that kept me guessing: Would Matt stay in the Happenstance, and what was he running from? Was Veronica who she claimed to be? Did the elderly sisters possess the resources to keep their home? The element of gentle mystery in this novel held me fast.

The author’s dry humour shows up in the dialogue of her characters; for example, in asking for a restaurant recommendation, Matt is told, “If you want Italian, there’s Wong’s over on the west side of town.” Her descriptions were just right as well: A woman’s laughter “sparkled into his soul”; the engine “purred like a well-fed kitten.” The plethora of characters—several with strong and maybe caricaturized “accents”—nevertheless people the novel with a wide range of personalities that prove the author really respects and understands in depth the individualism and variety of humanity found in small-town America.

The Road To Happenstance by Janice L Dick is a charming contemporary Christian mystery that will delight your heart and soul. It is part of the Mosaic Collection.
We all have a past that we sometimes want to escape from and need to heal. Happenstance is a town that attracts the lost and the hurting, wraps them in love and helps them heal. “In this town everybody cares about everybody, even the newcomers.” Needs are met by huge hearts.
There are times when we feel abandoned by God or we run from Him. “It seemed God had deserted him in his hour of need… Not that he didn’t believe, he was disillusioned.” Life has a way of dragging us down but God is faithful and we can trust His leading. When life is hard, we need to run to God, not away from Him.
Even when we abandon God, He never abandons us. He lovingly pursues us. “I figured I’d keep my distance from Him… He keeps pursuing me and I can’t get away.” God loves us with an everlasting love and He will never let us go. “God had pursued him in a quiet but insistent manner.”
Sometimes life is confusing. We need to pray and listen to God. “Search your heart and listen to God.” Sometimes we are the answer to the prayers of others.
Not everyone is quite as they seem. Some hide their true identity. Within the novel there is a mystery to solve. Some characters see with clarity the motives of others.
The characters are wonderfully drawn. I adored the octogenarians who still had a zest for life. Janice L Dick has produced an eclectic mix of characters who will warm the reader’s heart.
I adored The Road To Happenstance – I want to move there! I hope there will be many more visits to Happenstance as Janice L Dick has awakened my heart and soul to this wonderful town. More, more, more please.
I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.

Right from the start, I found myself falling in love with this story. Don't we all wish that we could escape to a unique little town like Happenstance--- a town which in so many ways feels like a bit of a step into the past... or at the very least away from the real world. I loved getting to know this quirky little town and all the unique characters as the story started... still everything is not quite as perfect as it seems in Happenstance. Things start going wrong leading to a good dose of mystery and intrigue that I absolutely could not put down! I had to know how it would end... what exactly had happened in Matt's past that had sent him running? Was Ronie who she seemed to be, or was she telling lies? Were the sisters truly well... what was real and what was a setup? It certainly had me guessing. While I could have stayed among this rather eclectic group of characters forever, I also couldn't wait to see how it would all turn out in the end. In addition to the drama, suspense, and even a bit of romance, there is also a really great theme of how God puts us just where we need to be and with the people we need too. I really loved that idea as I read the story.

This is book number 7 in the Mosaic Collection and truly such a fun and unique addition. If you've read the other books in this collection, you'll definitely want to add this one too. If not, it's no problem... all of the books in the collection are independent stories written by a variety of Christian fiction writers. The stories vary greatly in style but all point to great messages of faith.

If you love a small town mystery, this is one certainly worth checking out!

**I received a complimentary copy of this book for consideration. All thoughts are 100% my own.

What a delightful journey of twists and turns! I didn't know what to expect from The Road to Happenstance, but I've been dying to read book two since I first saw that cover and decided now was the time. I was so wrong. Last week, month, year--when I first heard about it! That was the time. But better late than never is always most true about a good book.

Matt's character is a compelling mixture of strength, brokenness, chivalry, and a determination to find the good in situations. His own life valleys have definitely contributed to that. So even as I fought the urge to shake the screen to knock some sense into him, I respected him. After all, innocent until proven guilty works in all directions. He just didn't always like the proof he saw.

The Barlow sisters--perfection. All the joy of quirky old ladies without stepping into cliches that don't work. Instead, Janice L. Dick took what should be stereotypical or cliched and twists them into something new and fun.

Happenstance isn't the town you think it is. There's a whisper of Utopia about it, but being inhabited by sinners means it's far from perfect. Cannot wait to start Maizie's book.

For those who love strong faith woven in without being battered over the head with it... you'll love The Road to Happenstance. No helmet needed for this ride!

Ever wonder why you are in a particular place or why something happened the way it did?

Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines happenstance as “a circumstance especially that is due to chance.” When I was in high school, many moons ago, one of my teachers wrote this on the blackboard one afternoon,

“A coincidence is a small miracle in which God chooses to remain anonymous.”
(author unknown)

Decades later, I’ve never forgotten the saying or the teacher who had the strength of character to write it on the blackboard. From that day forward, I began a journey of awareness of seeing God’s hand in the little things, in the surprise moments most call a coincidence, I call a “God thing”.

Author Janice Dick understands; in her novel The Road to Happenstance Matthew Sadler finds himself on a road trip, driving his ‘77 Harley. Everything about Matt’s trip seems to occur by happenstance from his reason for the road trip to his ending up in the small town of Happenstance. There he meets two elderly sisters who are running the only hotel, where Matt finds a place to stay, and new friends.

Matt also meets two younger women, one who reminds him of his deceased wife, and the other altogether different than any women he ever met. Though Matt intends to leave the next day, a series of events from his bike breaking down to the need to order parts from another city to herbal teas, he finds himself staying longer than he planned. He even began to call the old hotel “home”.

Matt is completely befuddled as to why he delays leaving. It is only toward the end of this story that the reader learns, with Matt, his true purpose for his unexpected visit in Happenstance.

The Road to Happenstance is a delightful read that entertains as well as bringing understanding anew. With a bit of interpersonal relationships to romance and even a bit of mystery, I highly recommend this novel.

Happenstance is a quaint with an abundance of quirky characters who both welcome newcomers and immediately invite them in. Despite his best intentions to leave, the residents pull Matt Sadler into their little world.

While readers are given inklings that all is not right throughout the book, the actual mystery doesn’t reveal itself until three-quarters of the way through the story (but things really start moving once it does). It annoyed me a little how gullible Matt was when it came to Roni, and I wondered if he’d never heard the “fool me once, same on you; fool me twice, shame on me"adage because he was fooled way more than twice.

Most of the townspeople are what make The Road to Happenstance enjoyable and, even though there were a couple of things in this plot I didn’t love, I would return to this little fictional town to find out what’s happening with everyone.

The author did a wonderful job writing this book.
The beginning of the story looked nothing like the end. The twists, bends and curves of the story was superb. I enjoyed how the author wrote about how God works behind the scene in the lives of his children.
Matt has lost faith in God and was running. Almost ran off the road by two wonderful sisters into Happenstance. I enjoyed reading how he got to let go of the past and face the accusations against him head-on. Even though he has to experience Roni's wrath in the process.
You'd be enamored by the two sister's Gracyie and Emm. Wonderful women. Their spunky will make you laugh and admire them despite their age.
Everyone gets to have a second chance and Paula did. I love how the author introduced her into the story!
Everyone loves a love triangle story once in a while.

God's workings behind the scenes and his consistent pursuing of mankind ran through this story.

I received a copy of the book and this is my honest opinion

Matt Sadler was running. He didn't know he was running away, but probably sensed that would be coming. A young widower who had been betrayed by colleagues and most friends, Matt saw a life of extreme unhappiness stretching out in front of him at Reedport

To avoid being run over on his vintage 1977 Harley by two little old ladies in a station wagon, he took a right turn on an unfamiliar road. Following the road across a covered bridge led to life changes.

On the other side of the bridge, Matt found the little community of Happenstance. He'd never heard of it before, but he decided to stay overnight.
He knew that his late wife, Ginny, would have liked the quaint little town. And that first evening, the chronic stress crept over him. Matt was simply too tired to keep riding. A couple days in a community no one in Reedport would expect could be a restful paradise.

Circumstances (or so it seemed) kept cropping up to keep him there just a little longer. Soft protection for the Ballard sisters, elderly proprietors of the Happenstance Hotel was at the top of the list of circumstances needing his involvement and help.

More opportunities presented themselves for Matt to help. Or be helped, when his Harley needed some work done. Quiet philosopher, Gavin "Bear" Beresford and Pastor Otto Selig became trusted people with whom he could share some of his story, especially his grief.

Matt is too young to be alone. First one lovely young woman, Roni Wilkenson, entered his life and he began to think perhaps she would be the next one for him. A scary medical emergency for Miss Emmaline Barlow, one of the sisters, brought Dr. Paula Percy into his life. Matt and Paula shared a love of motorcycles and an intense protective spirit for the Ballard sisters. Roni felt the Emmaline and Grayce Ballard were too old to be running the hotel. She was suspicious of dementia and Alzheimer's for Grayce, while clearly Emmaline's heart wasn't as strong as it could be. Roni had next to no interest in the motorcycles, riding as a driver or a passenger.

Matt finds himself fitting into the community and its history. He believes the history of Happenstance Hotel can be used in marketing. He's beginning to entertain thoughts of staying. Evil and criminal activities are attracted to Happenstance as well. Matt will have his hands full stopping trouble and protecting the Barlow sisters. There is a snake in the grass among the criminals who plans to destroy Matt's reputation in Happenstance as it has been ruined in Reedport. Snakes use blackmail as their prized tools!

Author Janice L. Dick writes faith based novels. The good guys win while readers enjoy historical connections, dry humor and development of true love! The story doesn't have specific doctrine, but a solid faith statement. There is no extreme violence, profanity, vulgarity or sensuality. Amazing how a very good tale can be spun without shock and awe!

This is a new to me author.
I admit I had trouble getting into the book at first.
This story kind of reminded me of Stephen King's Under the Dome type of book. Not sure how I feel about that cause I don't like him. I feel that he's a weird eccentric type of guy.
I thought about putting it down but then something kept nudging me to at least finish the book. I'm glad I did!
Even though it was slow getting into it was still a good story.
I think my favorite part was towards the ending.
How I loved the two sisters Grayce and Emmaline!! They sure had quite a story to tell especially about the old hotel that they lived in.
I thought Matt was a great character. The author really did well with him. I loved how she put him through well, just life in general. I think that we all put God on the back burner at sometime or another but then something or someone draws us back to Him like a magnet if you know what I mean?
In another way, this book kind of reminds of Jonah running from God because he didn't want to do what God wanted.
I believe that Matt was like that.
Then we have Roni. I didn't like her from the get go. I'm really not sure how to describe her without giving anything away so I will just leave it up to y'all.
I think also that there is more to this story than the author is letting on. I hope to see what happens with Matt and I wonder if he'll return to Happenstance since he hated it.
I rather liked Happenstance. It might be a small town but it does certainly have its share of trouble or at least seems to. I wouldn't mind returning to Happenstance.
Sometimes it can be the residents that can grow on you and believe me, I hated to say Goodbye.
I gave this book 4 stars because I felt the story started out too slow.
I did however love the cover of the book and I felt that it matched with the story that the bridge represented.
The bridge is gorgeous! I love covered bridges don't you?
I recommend this book
My thanks goes to the Mosaic Collection.

This is a book to be savored. It’s not a formulaic romance by any means. In fact, while there are romantic elements, that isn’t really the focus. Instead, it’s more about the main character’s self-discovery and willingness to let go of the past. The Road to Happenstance is a multi-layered story with a rich tapestry of characters. These can be overwhelming at first, but as you continue to read, they become like old friends and you discover that the setting and minor characters are just as important as the main character and his problems. The author’s attention to detail is second to none, and she’s written each and every scene with a purpose, so if you try to skim, you’ll miss important elements. To a degree, it reminded me of Netflix’s Virgin River where the focus is on the various quirky characters in a small, close knit town. All the little nuances are woven together with a delightful result. There is intrigue, mystery, and a touch of romance. There was a truly surprise ending, too, which I appreciated. After taking some time to read this book, I immediately wanted to start in on the next in the series, since I’d come to love and appreciate the characters so much. Take the time to read it thoroughly. You won’t be disappointed!

The sign proclaimed: “Happenstance: A Town You Can Trust.” But can you? When Matt arrives—by accident, it seems—in the time-warp town, he’s running from trouble. But trouble may have followed or waited for him.
I quickly fell in love with the quirky residents of Happenstance, especially gas station owner “Bear” with his mis-quips, like “volunteers are thick as hen’s teeth,” the Barlow sisters with their squabble-y banter, and the puzzled hero, Matt. Each character description and speech pattern painted a clear picture in my mind, and their personalities came to life.
The appearance of Roni, whose eerie resemblance to Matt’s wife, Ginny, draws him even while others speak of their distrust. Is she who and what she claims? The mysteries continue to deepen until they come to a heart-pounding climax.
I hope author Janice L. Dick writes a sequel; I miss her characters already. I love “The Road to Happenstance” and award it five stars. I was given an ARC by the publisher; all opinions are my own.

“Happenstance: A chance happening or event” (Dictionary.com)

That is what Matthew Sadler’s (aka Matthew Smith’s) arrival at the town by that name seems to be at first—a chance event. But the town’s welcoming vibe and quirky inhabitants cast a spell over the fleeing-from-demons teacher, whose motorbike, pony tail, and new growth beard are outward signs of the inner changes he seeks.

However, not all is as it seems even in the town that bills itself as “A Town You Can Trust.” As Matthew gets to know his two aging hosts at the Happenstance Hotel, the local mechanic, the coffee shop owner, the pastor, the woman who is a fellow guest at the hotel, and others, he realizes that strange things seem to be afoot—and even here his past might find him.

The wonderful writing, colourful characters, cleverly contrived plot, that reinforces themes of faith and grace, made this cozy mystery a welcome winter diversion for me.

A set of discussion questions at the end would make it a good book club choice.

Recommended!

My Thoughts on The Road to Happenstance
I don’t think I’ve ever met a cast of characters quite like this one! They are so unique and so interesting. Such a weird mix that somehow makes sense and also steals your heart.

Matt is running from his past. Is it his fault? Did he do what he was accused of? Can he ever find happiness? He’s a widow who doesn’t believe in second loves or really second chances but maybe he will soon. Matt is definitely going to stick around this town as it’s captured his attention and maybe his heart.

There are so many characters that you might consider secondary who are really going to steal the show. You’re going to start reading and not be able to put this book down.

I think the Ballard sisters are my absolute favorites from this novel.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author though I have enjoyed numerous books within The Mosaic Collection that this belongs to. I highly recommend you give this book and the whole collection a read. You’ll find wonderful books by real women who are sharing their hearts with you through the pen.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from JustRead Publicity Tours. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. From the first page, I was enchanted with this story and rode easily into Happenstance along with Matt. Each character was well-portrayed, the story unfolded so well and with plenty of suspense. In fact, there are parts where - as if it were a movie - I found myself wanting to shout to the slightly-too-gullible protagonist the obvious reality that he was somehow missing. I loved the Barlow sisters and the other downright nice people in Happenstance (well, most of them!), the reference to a wonderful Canadian tourist attraction, and the subtle but strong allusions to faith and morality. I look forward to the next book!

The author, Janice L. Dick, is a new to me author. I wasn't sure what to expect when I began reading this book, but I was pleasantly surprised. Janice L. Dick is a wonderful writer and the storyline reels you in from the beginning.

Matthew Salder is a widow who is trying to leave his past in the past and find a new life for himself. He happens to ride into the quaint town of Happenstance, intending on only staying a couple of days. There is so much going on in town that has Matthew staying longer then he intended. 2 women are vying for him and want him to stay. Over the days, there seems to be mystery and suspense in town, including some thefts. Matthew is suspect, but he sets out to prove himself innocent. Will either woman win his heart? Will Matthew reveal his past to the townspeople? Will he be welcomed to the town permanently.

The Road to Happenstance is a book of Romance, Mystery and moving on. The author does a great job with the characters and their interaction throughout the book. FANTASTIC BOOK!

I loved that the reader becomes intrigued right away at the beginning of this novel. You want to know what Matt is running from that he doesn't want to stay in Happenstance and doesn't want anyone to know his real name. For me this novel read like a Hallmark movie, which wasn't a bad thing. All of the characters had their little quirks and eccentricities but came together as a town. I really liked the dynamic between Roni and Matt. It made me want to keep reading because I had to figure out if Matt only liked and hung out with her because she reminded him of his dead wife or if he was actually starting to like her for who she was. Definitely would recommend this book to anyone who loves anything Hallmark channel.

Thank you in advance to The Mosaic Collection and JustRead Publicity Tours for providing a complimentary advance review copy. A positive review was not required. All words and thoughts are my own.

While this is part of the Christian and Faith-based “The Mosaic Collection”, the previous novels are not connected to this one, and not required to be read.

This is the third Mosaic Collection book I’ve read (previously “A Beautiful Mess”; “More Than Enough”). Each one is different, but each one contains an element of faith.

A widower running from his past; two lovely older ladies; and a charming town. A town that one can trust. This book has a mystery and a bit of intrigue to it as well. You wouldn't know it by the first few pages though. That is what makes this story interesting.

“The Road to Happenstance” takes a different turn than the other two I read – this one also has a mystical element to it.

The cover depicts an old fashioned, wooden bridge which can depict a calm and peaceful place. Maybe for relaxing, maybe for settling into a new life. It can be frightening or it can be renewing. It can stand for separating the past or merging past and present.

As stated, Matthew Sadler ends up in Happenstance, without an intention to stay. For some reason; and this is where the mystical happening comes in; he is unable to leave. He becomes attached to the Barlow Sisters, friends with Bear, and close to Veronica (Roni).

There are other characters as well, each central to the story.

As the story progressed it went from a mystical type story, to one of mystery. After one of the sisters fell ill, suspicions arise. Perhaps it was done on purpose.

The Barlow sisters are also having financial issues, and Matt is determined to help them – then he plans to leave town. It’s always “I’ll leave after …” with no efforts to leave.

The writer then starts taking the reader on a mystery, loaded with secrets, that ends with a suspenseful surprise. The writer also tackles the subject of a spousal death, false allegations, and mental illness.

It was difficult getting into this book at first, and I actually had to re-read it again to give a more thorough review. Once I was finally able to get well into the novel, it picked up and definitely held my interest. There were times it was hard to put down.

Matt's plan to not stay as long as he did was interesting. I liked how the reader kept the plans changing without it being a cliché, while remaining relevant to the story.

The Barlow sisters were old-fashioned, if not prudish. The faith element was strong, but not overwhelming. The characters went to church, and even Matt started going back to church as well. It was known that there were faith elements, but they were not a central theme of the novel.

Bear was well-named, and definitely a good friend despite getting some idioms wrong. Sandy was a bit of a character as well.

The one character I couldn’t stand from the beginning was Roni. I don’t know if that was the writer’s intention. But, I honestly disliked this character right off. She came off as too nosey, too moody, and definitely too pushy with helping the sisters. In chapter 24, my suspicions were confirmed. So, that didn’t come as a surprise when she showed her true colors.

This was a unique read and one that I will say was not as I expected, but more or less in a good way. I thought it had a darker element to it, despite the faith theme. However, it didn’t stay dark for too long.

While not a series with a connection to “The Mosaic Collection”, this is part of the writer’s “Happenstance Series”. As the ending was “open” (not really resolved) – the reader, if interested will definitely want to read the next book.

I would’ve preferred a more closed ending, however I am eager to see where the writer plans to take Matt, Paula, the Barlow sisters, and Bear in the next segment.

The Road to Happenstance

Matt ends up in Happenstance when traveling to get away. He was only going to stay a couple of days but ended up staying a lot longer. The book has a lot of surprises. Matt discovers a lot about the hotel where he is staying and the guest. The book did have a surprise ending which you will have to find out for yourself.

I received a complimentary copy of the book book from the author. This book review is my own opinion.

An enjoyable read with the theme of second chances. While I was not surprised by the outcome I nevertheless enjoyed the journey. The story contained heroes, heroines, villains and elderly crackerjacks. I was dismayed by the naivete of one of the characters and the all too common human propensity to view life through the lens of wishful thinking. No one can fool us so much as we can fool ourselves and there is much truth in the saying that experience is the best teacher. A recommended, light read.

The Road to Happenstance wasn't what I expected.

Almost immediately I felt shroud of mystery, constantly wondering if the town, or even the people, are real or just the figment of someone's imagination. Alfred Hitchcock and the Twilight Zone popped into my head a few times. It definitely has that old world feel. Happenstance, and its inhabitants, felt too good to be true, almost otherworldly, which amped up the mysterious feel.

Matt, the hero, has his own personal struggles throughout and my heart really went out to him. This is a broken man that is in need of a true revival and Happenstance looks to be the perfect place for a new beginning. I admired him, but who really captured my heart were the Barlow sisters, Emmaline and Grayce, owners of the Happenstance Hotel. They brought a certain temperament and sass that I truly enjoyed, and that was desperately needed, since there were multiple parts of the story that really dragged for me.

I also wished there would've been a little more character depth in certain story lines, with certain characters, but other than that I really enjoyed this book. The flow of the narrative is nice, the writing is decent, and it had a satisfying ending with a slight, unexpected twist.

All in all, though different than my expectations, it was an entertaining read.

A whimsical town, a host of quirky characters, and events that seem to conspire to keep Matthew Sadler from leaving once he arrives by “happenstance.”

Fleeing painful memories, Matt and his motorcycle are roaring along the highway when a near-accident forces him onto a hidden side road. On the far side of a covered bridge, he discovers the town of Happenstance.

He’ll leave as soon as he gases up. Or after a night’s rest in the charming Happenstance Hotel. Or after he helps the elderly sisters who run the hotel. Or after…

As well as the sisters, he meets Bear, a local mechanic with some unusual turns of phrase, and Veronica, who bears a startling resemblance to his dead wife.

The longer he stays, the more he suspects a mystery behind the hotel’s troubles.

This gently-paced novel will bring smiles—and maybe a wistful longing to find a place like Happenstance in the real world.

Favourite lines:
The road was scarcely wide enough for two cars to pass, a dirt path with a scattering of gravel on top as a sort of apology. [Kindle location 30]

We got whatcha want, unless you want what we don’t got, and then you prob’ly don’t need it. [Bear, describing the town; Kindle location 50]

They came with their offerings of food to their gods of guild and duty and pity, but he would rather have been alone. [Matt remembering the visitors after his wife’s death; Kindle location 1788]

Author Janice L. Dick is known for her faith-filled historical fiction. Although The Road to Happenstance is a contemporary novel, the town’s nostalgic feel lends an impression of stepping back in time, and Matthew’s personal struggles are affected by his faith. The Road to Happenstance, a small town filled with quirky characters. Matthew Sadler rides his Harley in Happenstance whose goal is passing through, but people conspire to prevent him from leaving.
Matt is attracted to Roni a guest staying at the hotel reminds him of his late wife. The Barlow sisters think Matt is their knight in shining amour. Ms. Percy love’s the motorcycle, but she is wary of the woman from the hotel.
However, this quiet town has its faults and its sinister side starts to show. There are thefts and accusations that point towards Matthew. The longer he stays, the more he suspects a mystery.
With all that is going on in the world today, The Road to Happenstance longs to find a real place, a place of stepping back in time, a place that one might struggle with their faith and see God work through their lives. A quick read that will bring smiles.

Happenstance review
When Matt Sadler turned his motorcycle onto an unknown road, he never expected his like to change like it did. Life has not been so nice to Matt, startung with being a widower, being betrayed by his friends. He really needed to just start over. But what he finds from the people of the small community of Happenstance. A small town he knew nothing about. What would happen to Matt if he stays here with these strangers in their small?

This is a really neat and meaningful story to read. As I read this book, following Matt, doing whatever he can to help people, it was nice and heartwarming. And especially they way Matt is with the oP loved these sisters and their valuable part in this story. The longer Matt stays on Happenstance, the closer he gets to its people. And for the most part, they are a loveable group. The cast of characters were fun and enjoyable. Except one that kept getting under my skin, but it seems most books have one of those people. And it made for a little extra enjoyment. Overall this is a really nice read. I encourage everyon who loves reading clean books to check this one out. You can't go worng on this one.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Road to Happenstance, the story of a town by the same name that somehow feels like it is in an alternate universe. It is a town with delightfully quirky inhabitants who manage to bring much needed healing to the soul of widower Matthew Sadler who feels beat up by his own world.

I loved how easily Matthew became involved in the lives of the elderly Barlow sisters who quickly pull him into various projects around town. He soon learns that when he helps others his own troubles seem to disappear. Life in Happenstance is not without its problems though. Matthew finds himself drawn to a woman who reminds him strongly of his late wife but the more he is around her the more something just seems to be off about her. The plot is filled with wonderful characters, some of whom are a tad shady, a bit of mystery and deception, but most of all an enchanting and whimsical tale with a strong message of hope.

The Road to Happenstance

The Little town of Happenstance that lures you in with her simple beauty and serenity. That’s how I would describe the town and its effect on Matt.

The twists, the intrigue was good.

Matt was running but happenstance stops him and gave him the chance too deal with the past while choosing to face his current charge in his present. All this showed us how God is always working behind the scene in every life

Who would have thought that having almost been run of the road by 2 sisters would change the cause of Matt's life.

It all happened starting on the road to Happenstance and lead us knowing that God works in mysterious ways behind the scene in each of our lives.

This book was such a delight. Thank you The Mosaic collection and JustReads for my complimentary copy. I was NOT required to write a positive review; all thoughts and opinions are my own

A little bit of mystery, a little bit of romance, a little bit of learning to live the life God has given you, and a whole lot of caring for others. Janice Dick has created a very likeable character in Matt. He comes to Happenstance on accident and grows to care for the older women who run the Happenstance Hotel. He has issues in his past that he is running away from but that he needs to deal with - losing his wife five years ago and being falsely accused at his previous job. Matt is a helper - he helps the pastor, even though he is running away from God, he helps the old ladies he lives who run the hotel.
I found The Road to Happenstance to be an enjoyable read and one I didn’t want to put down. I recommend this book, which is part of the Mosaic Collection, to those you enjoy reading about how others have faced problems and overcome them. Janice Dick does include discussion questions making this a great book for a book club selection. I look forward to reading other titles in the Happenstance Chronicles.
There would not be a problem with adding The Road to Happenstance to my k-12 Christian school library. It is appropriate for older middle school and up.
I received a complimentary e-copy of The Road to Happenstance because I am a member of the Launch Team as well as part of the JustRead Publicity Tour. This is my honest review.

It didn’t take many paragraphs for this story to completely catch my attention and draw me in.

In this case, I was drawn to not only the storyline, but the unique, lovable characters who make up a quaint town named Happenstance. I loved the descriptions of the stores, library, and the once beautiful manor that was converted into a hotel. It was all so easy to visualize and fall in love with.

When Matthew Sadler, because of a near accident, guides his Harley motorcycle off the main road and through a beautiful covered bridge, he has no idea that it will be life-changing. Matt is trying to escape problems that he’s been dealing with where he lives and works. He has no destination in mind, only the need to take a break from the life he’s experiencing.

Behind this beautiful book cover, you will discover interesting stories of death, friendship, romance, mystery, and much more.
