Mo Tianliao was a master weaponsmith and a demonic cultivator. When news spread that he was about to complete a divine weapon, cultivators from both the demonic and orthodox sides chased him down and killed him. In a stroke of luck, he managed to possess a new body and was reborn.
So what was the first thing on his mind after his rebirth? Avenging his death? Taking over the world?
Mo Tianliao: I have to find my cat!
— Mo Tianliao: Why won’t you let me hug you? You used to be my cat!
Master: (unsheathes claws)
Mo Tianliao: Ahaha, this disciple has too much respect for Master, this disciple can’t bear to let Master walk on the ground!
This story about a reborn demon lord and his cat is packed with fluff. Both main characters are OP, so there’s almost no angst. The author captures the quirks of the cat really well—it’s cute, sure, but all the slapping, scratching, and biting is not exactly my idea of romance.
The amount of face-shaming, especially early on, also made me uncomfortable. The story does eventually explain the reason behind this attitude, but it didn’t fully justify it for me.
There’s also an instance of non-con that felt completely unnecessary. At that point, it seemed like there might be something deeper going on with the gong’s inner demon, but it was never explored.
On the whole, it’s not a bad read, but not my favorite either. While there are some entertaining moments and sweet interactions, the lack of depth in both plot and character arcs kept me from fully enjoying it.
This novel is a menagerie. You'll especially loved this if you love animals. It has bunch of them and they are all so adorable!
I knew there are a lot of good reviews about this novel but I didn't read what this was all about even before starting. To be honest, after seeing the one cover of this novel, I really thought I'll experienced so much angst. Though my heart really ached on the very first chapter (a kitten cries miserably, of course it will make your heart ached), this is a novel full of fluff and dog food (cat food? because you know, the ML's a cat lol).
I loved the relationship dynamic of the MC and the ML, like they're each other's entire world. They both have their immaturity and childishness in them, but they handled their relationship quite well, like a real adult. They quickly resolved their issues because they communicate with each other. People, communication is the key! It's so beautiful how they love each other so much, the kind of love that no one can come between them because their attachment to each other was just so tight. The MC simps over the ML so hard even in the events before the novel starts and the ML is a lovable tsundere cat who sacrificed a lot for his owner and has a great dependence on him.
I really did have a fun time reading this novel. This might not be the very best among the novels I've read, but this is still great one and my rating shows how much I enjoyed reading this. Highly recommended!!
The cat quirks were cute and I will never get tired of a demon lord MC/ML, but I would have liked to see more from the romance. There were a lot of potentially interesting things to get into but I feel like they were never or not fully explored.
This book is the ultimate romance between a several hundred-years-old craftsman and his magical cat. Mo Tianliao and Qingtong are two people (loosely defined) who just want to be left in peace to craft and live together. The book doesn't really have much of an overarching conflict, so much as a series of sequential events that somehow make the afore-mentioned goal somewhat difficult. I didn't mind at all, because the real joy of the book is reading about how these two are so sweet to one another and completely wretched to every other person or divine beast on this entire planet.
People mess with Qingtong, they die. People mess with Mo Tianliao, they die but usually slower. There's some cultivation sect politics in the background (that's the genre after all) but don't get too hung up on names or alliances, one way or another every cannon fodder adversary meets an unpleasant end. The book is its most enjoyable when you lean into the sweetness of Qingtong turning into a kitten so he can be carried around instead of having to walk, or cringe at the creepiness of Mo Tianliao, say, saving Qingtong's fur to felt tiny kitten dolls. It's cute, it's fluffy, and it's fun.
I started this book right before going on vacation, which was perfect timing since I had plenty of time to read on the plane and also by the pool.
**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**
The title had me super confused initially but it made so much more sense after I learned who the characters were. Now it just makes me lol when I read it, because it's so accurate. Good thing Mo Tianliao's body is made from divine wood, with the number of times he's gotten scratched by his kitty!! Honestly eventually it felt like I was reading about a whole menagerie of animals, not just a cat, from foxes to bears to bunnies. It was all super cute.
Story-wise it's pretty light and chill. We primarily follow the MC, Mo Tianliao, as he goes about his day as a member of the Woyun Sect and his interactions with his kitty master Qingtong. There are a couple of dramatic moments throughout the story, such as when MTL revealed his true identity or at the end when they open the gates to the other world, but the focus of the book, at least for me, was definitely on the relationship between MTL and his master. The ending of the book did come a bit abruptly. I knew I was almost hitting the end based on the chapter count, but it didn't feel like the story was going to end anytime soon, so sure enough when the end came, it felt quite rushed.
I really liked MTL and QT's relationship. MTL literally doesn't care about anyone or anything else in the world except for his kitty (though he does have a soft spot for animals in general), and his feelings are pretty much reciprocated by Qingtong, even though he gets easily embarassed by it and takes a while to figure out his feelings. Conveniently the author found a way to make dual cultivation mutually beneficial for both of him, so that it could save QT's cracked soul while elevating MTL's own cultivation at unheard of speeds. Win win!
And the way QT's character is written really does make him sound like a cat, with how often he scratches MTL's face or back in a fit of spite. And his laziness when it comes to doing anything makes him sound like a really spoiled cat. I cracked up when he was using his own disciple as a leg rug or one of the fox beasts as a pillow. One of the other elders in the Woyun Sect, Xuanji, keeps comparing his own disciples who run off to do their own thing the first chance they get to QT's disciples that spoil him all day. Sorry Xuanji, but you drew the short end of the straw when it comes to your disciples XP
It was adorable that Tongtong's ears just pop up in human form when he's not aware. There's one instance where thought MTL was making a pendant for the fox beast and got jealous, and when MTL corrected his misunderstanding, his white ears popped out and got pink from embarrassment when he realized his mistake. I want to see a fanart of this moment... So cute!
Honestly all of the side characters were cute in their own way, to how they all eagerly chow down on food even though they're way past the point of needing it in their cultivation, to MTL's poor shixiong Meng Hu who was really looking forward to having a shidi to take care of sect affairs but ends up bullied by MTL into managing the affairs of his whole manor, to the poor bunny disciple who can't stop chomping on valuable leaves and herbs from the sect garden. There were so many cute and hilarious moments XP
Here are some moments from the book that made me laugh:
A giant ten-zhang-long lion stretched out its paws and bowed its head to a palm-sized cat. Wasn’t it a bit ridiculous?
The kitten jumped down from the tree and landed precisely on the thick long fur of the lion’s mane. It took him a couple of tries to climb on top of the lion’s head. Hei Yanshi stood up and shook his fur, but he did not shake his head.
“Meow!” Mo Xiaozhao let out a cry, presumably meaning “Giddy up” or some such. The lion leapt out of the flowers and, step by step, carried the riding kitten away.
“…” Mo Tianliao stared blankly, still holding his cup.
---------------
The Leader of the Woyun Sect, who was regarded as a person of noble character and high prestige, would not ignore his guests even while eating, so Yun Song and the others had intended to have a chat with Tianlang in order to distract him. However, Tianlang Zhenren turned out to be the one who was most focused on eating. The glassy jade chopsticks could not grip the bones at all so Tianlang Zhenren, who did not have a dutiful disciple like Mo Tianliao to cut his food for him, casually ate with his hands.
One hand held the lamb chop, the other pressed down his beard so as to avoid getting it dirty. The gestures were elegant and natural, they were also quite fast, in the blink of an eye a whole rack of lamb had been completely devoured.
“Erm…” Yun Song, who wanted to take this opportunity to say something, saw Tianlang pick up a second rack of lamb.
---------------
Shidi, where are you going?” Meng Hu looked at the direction he was walking in and pulled at him.
“I’m going to keep Master company,” Mo Tianliao said very frankly, he had no intention to lie. Meng Hu immediately shook his big head like a rattle, “No, no!” You must never disturb Master while he’s sleeping.
“Lately, Master likes to use me as his mattress,” Mo Tianliao said proudly.
Meng Hu’s eyes widened. Shidi was a tree Beast, he had no fur at all. Why did Master like to use him as a mattress?
“You have no idea,” Mo Tianliao said solemnly. “He also uses me as a quilt, sits on me like a bench and even rides me like a rocking horse. Master likes all of it.”
A rocking horse? Meng Hu’s eyes widened. Master still liked to play with rocking horses? Looking at shidi’s back disappearing into the night, he suddenly felt some pity for him.
Such a cute story 😭😭😭 i love this type of SOL cultivation story with mystical creatures that focuses more on the day to day and magical beasts. It definitely does not have a complex political plot or anything of the sorts. It's just a cute story, i really loved it. I wish there was more!
This books is definitely a good and worthy read. Maybe I will even read it again in the future.
The whole theme is quite unique, the same as whiting style. IMHO, it feels not like other cultivation novels. And I like the crafting part here too.
There is some comedy included, but sometimes is feels a bit stupid or out of place. Still, the comedy is one of ways how our main couple interacts.
I expected a bit more from endings and extras. Ending was quite rushed and short. I felt like author just wanted to quickly finish it. Or maybe the culmination was not enough. In short, books was quite good but the culmination and endings is a bit disappointing.
The plot is good, I like this developments and pace. It was never boring, only a bit silly from time to time. I would really feel more complete to read a fuller ending. Still, what there is there.
There is some drama, but not much. Same with adventures. Mostly it’s our couple interactions. I should say, I feel a bit bitter for “scratching post” as I did not felt much love from TongTong. Maybe he just not showing is normally, or maybe this kind of character just not my cup of tea. Not sure. Tsundere was never to my liking.
Very easy to read, which is a big pros of this novel.
In conclusion: Not the best book I’ve ever read, but definitely a good one. Recommend to give it a go and see for yourself.
ending felt rlly abrupt 😭 ill see how the extras go
its was okay, I mean, at some points i felt a little frustrated towards mqt but he's really just a stupid brainless lazy cat. mtl is entertaining to follow as like 70% he's trolling ppl b4 revealing himself as duantian
its not tooo romance heavy but it isn't devoid of it, a lot of the novel delves into the demonic beasts/secr affairs???
it was fluffy for the most part whenever mqt and mtl were together, i really enjoyed a lot of the character interactions, esp shi di and little fatty (lol) but at times i did find myseld bored and speed-reading
definitely a good light novel to pick up after reading something heavy, its doesn't require too much brainpower to understand and it's prettu funny, not my preferences in novels but it doesnt mean its bad, worth checking out b4 the eng physical copies come out 👍
It was entertaining. Adventures during cultivating and seeking cultivation treasures were the highlights of the novel. This is not overburdened with endless details of leveling up. The focus is more on the relationships.
The characters share similarities with The Husky and His White Cat Shizen for their closeness and awkwardness. Both the MC and the ML were engaging characters that kept the story moving. The MC is not over powered, but, has plenty of interesting gadgets and tricks to fight an opponent. The friendly secondary characters were funny keeping the storyline light. There were some touching moments during the few sad parts.
The ending felt abrupt or maybe I wanted to see more. This is worth reading once.
2ha is my favorite book of all time so i was excited when i found this book which also featured a white cat shizun! tbh it started off pretty exciting and i was genuinely hooked but by the halfway mark i hated it so much i wanted to drop it so badly but i just pressed on hoping that it would get better at the end...IT DID NOT. this is the first danmei i've read where i really dislike both of the main characters esp qingtong, who comes off as a spoilt, bitchy and unlikable version of chu wanning. I COULD NOT STAND HIS ASS and 80% of the reason i wanted to drop this book was because of how much he annoyed me. And the gong is not that much better either. I really don't know who this book is for but it sure ain't me.
I love love love this author, and her world building. This novel has the feeling of Soul Land Chinese LN x Return Of The Mount Hua Sect Korean manhwa (both are shounen titles), especially at the beginning, and it did address my issue with Soul Land's treatment of soul beasts. The ending felt abrupt, though. Good thing the extras were fun.
I was a bit iffy with the dubcon parts (sigh), which is why I'm knocking one star out.
I don’t care what anyone says. I loved the cat-human shou going full gremlin: scratching, biting, slapping the gong. Peak behaviour.
I’ve been down bad with the flu, tissues everywhere, functioning at 4% brain capacity so I skipped right past the worldbuilding and went straight to Reddit hunting for something light and fluffy. THIS BOOK had me giggling like a fevered little goblin. 10/10 serotonin.
Mo Tianliao is so whipped for his cat it's hilarious. His cat is super tsundere and adorable, so I can understand why Mo Tianliao loves him so much lol. I loved how everyone spoiled Qingtong (as they should!)
this made me shake and sob and cry. mc has a cat and dies as a villain, but comes back to life years later.. his cat is now his new teacher and they recognize each other pretty fast, and they become very protective of each other so so so cute.
