Cat and Bag are constant companions. Cat is an artist who makes picture books and comics, and Bag is, well... there. There to remind Cat of each and every worry, there to undermine Cat's decisions, there to roll-call all the embarrassing things Cat's done at a moment's notice. Can the unlikely duo ever make it work?' Viv Schwarz chronicles her relationship with anxiety disorder in this collection of warm, funny, and moving strips.
Viviane Schwarz is the author-illustrator of THERE ARE CATS IN THIS BOOK as well as SHARK AND LOBSTER'S UNDERSEA ADVENTURE. She grew up in Germany and now lives in London.
Want to watch "Love Actually?" I brought depression, I mean popcorn. I brought popcorn. It's sweet 'n' salty. Like tears.
I fear I may have stumbled upon a wonderful source for new talent graphic novels when I discovered shortbox. Their selection of "fun and fine" contemporary comics and graphic novels are something wonderful to behold. For my first foray I purchased five that grabbed my attention.
In this offering from Viviane Schwarz, she draws upon her struggles with Anxiety Disorder, to produce a memoir of sorts. Representing herself as cat and the anxiety as an engulfing bag, she details simple aspects of life which can inadvertently trigger the bag to engulf her.
It resonated with me as I also suffer from anxiety disorder. I quite enjoyed the bag's constant attempts to undermine as it was all too familiar. You just need to remember...
I related to a lot of situations in this small comic collection. That said, I don't feel like I gained much further insight into myself or my anxiety. I felt seen and that's definitely worth something! The art is nice but not particularly captivating.
It's helpful to see how others personify their mental disorders. My anxiety is just a voice! Harder to get humor out of it that way, instead of how Schwarz does here.
