One of the most shit scary books in the Saga. I am not kidding, I read horror and this made me sleep rather uncomfortable.

The 20th book, Ravnens Vinger ("The Raven's Wings") follows Heike, son of Sölve/Sølve partly as he grows up in the small village of Planina where his father died. But mostly, it is the story of him beginning a long journey back home, back to Scandinavia, to Norway and a family that doesn't even know he exists.

Heike is one of the cursed members of the clan and perhaps that is one of the reasons for his adventures in this book. It is certainly why he survives.

This is a book that truly mixes myth and reality, layers upon layers of ghost stories and illusions. I eat it up every time. Like in so many pf the previous books, I think one of the strengths of this book is the descriptive powers of Sandemo. Reading the descriptions of the haunted forests closely, I find it hard not to get chills. It is a place both fatally fascinating and absolutely terrifying.

I have a soft spot for the character of Heike, I really do. So maybe I'm raitng this book a little higher than it needs to be, because in the grand scheme of things, not much happens related to the overall story. But it does give a great insight in Heike's childhood and youth, far far away from the place he truly belongs. And as I said, I have a soft spot for him. I can't say why, really.

Following this book are three more than follows Heike's story, as he travels towards his home and as he meets his estranged family. But also beyond that. So in the end, I sort of view it as a test of sorts. A way for Heike's slumbering powers to awaken and grow, for him to realise his potential. As if something big is coming.

OH MY GOD.

An ice people novel, in Transylvania, with a lot of spooky stuff going on? Sign me up!
This book is basically a what if Margit Sandemo read Dracula and some japanese folk tale and decided to throw them into a blender.
And it turned out to be the best damn Ice People book!

There was so much I absolutely loved about this.
Firstly, the book started with the first three chapters basically being one long prologue, and it was superb. Thrilling, horrifying, amazing.

And then the characters. I think this cast of characters is the best of any ice people book. Heike is a really solid protagonist. Peter is like that guy in book 6 (was it Kaleb..? Can't remember, it was almost a year ago I read that book) but better, and Mira was a really solid character to round the cast off with.
The antagonist of the book, probably the best of the series, and the twists and turns this book took. I'm flabbergasted.

The plot, well let's just say that there are some scenes here that feel as if they're borrowed from Dracula and I couldn't be happier. Especially the scene at the climax and the scene in the cematary.
Sandemo also writes some pretty okay horror scenes, though they'd need a bit more polished to be anywhere near those of an actual horror writer. Still, I take what I can get.

My biggest (and only real) complaint about this book is that the research done on accurate romanian... well that was a zero.
I really got annoyed that they used the word "Strega" so much. Which, while yes, it means witch in italian, it is more similar to the romanian word "a striga" which means "to shout". And Margit could have used the word ”Strigoaică” or heck, even ”Strigoi” which even though it mainly refers to vampires, could also be witches and warlocks. Also, the letter "ä" is used to describe the name of the town, which I guess is meant to be called Târgul Stregești. Now yes, romanian has some letters that might seem weird to scands, especially â and ă since we don't really have any sounds that are similar, but using the "ä"?!
Yeah, my biggest nitpick ever on an otherwise really good book.

Also, I do this on every book I read in 2026, so if this book was a song, it would be "Would You Follow Me" by (Transsylvania) Phoenix.

No i Heike! On chyba też będzie w moich ulubieńcach jeśli chodzi o postacie z tej sagi.

A book of mysteries and the first book of arguably the most interesting Ice People character (according to my former colleague, I like Silje and Tengel, Tula is also great).
In this book Sandemo put up a great mystery and even if the twist might be a bit predictable to someone who has read a lot of her works the details around it was incredible. A truly imaginative mind and quite the satisfying read.

So, so far I've read 20 books in this series since May this year. I wanted to read them because I found out there was a really big hype during the 80s. So far I have no regrets! This book did not disappoint at all. Creepy as hell, I almost couldn't fall asleep after finishing it. I also love Heike, he is a very interesting main character and I adore his personality. I haven't liked a character this much since Villemo. I'm looking forward to getting to know him more.

Persónusköpun slök og of mikið endurunnið efni.
