Jason and Vale are back in this side story set in the Heat of Love universe!
A romantic getaway turns dramatic when an unexpected heat descends on Vale, leaving Jason with no choice but to act. The resulting pregnancy is dangerous for Vale and terrifying for Jason, but with the help of friends and family, they choose to embrace their uncertain future. Together they find all the love, joy, and heat they need to guide them through!
While this story follows the characters from Slow Heat, it will be most enjoyable if read directly after Alpha Heat, as it takes place contemporaneously with that book.

This is like an expanded, more detailed supplement to book 2 Alpha Heat, focusing on Jason and Vale’s story which coincidentally, runs parallel with Urho and Xan’s.
I love this series, and I think it’s the best of the ABO out there, but newbies or on the fence readers beware, this shows ABO smex, KNOTTING, and mpreg in all its graphic (and gory) glory.
*gulps*
The emotions were spot on, capitalizing on the raw vulnerability and desperate fear and ultimately, the fragile hope that Jason and Vale cling to that they’ll survive this unplanned pregnancy. A great addition and a very very intimate look at their love and how that’s tested with their personal struggles and fertility challenges.
So, it’s pretty hard not to reference The Twilight Saga and how a particular pregnancy mirrored this one.
This story started with a bang and ended with an even bigger one. Seriously, Ms Blake can certainly keep you in the edge of your seat. It appears she’s a big believer that when it rains it pours.
I laughed several times that I mourned the lack of fisting in the first book. Only to be hit over the head with it in this. But really, that’s not a complaint, on the contrary.
I love Vale and this only cemented that love. I love they he stood his ground, I adored his sense of humor and especially his crankiness during the final half of his pregnancy.
While Jason’s parents were shown in a much more likable light. His friend Xan irritated me several times throughout, especially near the end when he demanded WTF was going on when it couldn’t have been more obvious.
All in all this was a super entertaining read. It gave you drama, emotions, sweetness, some incredible steam and all the love you could dream of.
This is so good! The story of Vale and Jason's conception, pregnancy and birth of their first born son is wonderful. They remain my favorite couple and I very much enjoyed being with them during such a scarry, stressful but happy time in their lives.
It's me not the book. Having read Alpha Heat, I already knew how things are going to work out and the plot didn't have enough tension to keep me interested. It probably didn't help that A) I don't care about pregnancies and parenthood, B) from their first book, I never really cared much for Jason and Vale as characters or as a couple.
This novella follows Jason and Vale from book 1 through Vale’s pregnancy and all it entails. It’s a companion novella to book 2, taking place about the same time.
Now the first thing – if you aren’t into mpreg, stay away from this one. There is a LOT of pregnancy and birthing talk with loads of detail to it. Not sure if I really wanted to know all that … even though I adore Vale and Jason. They’re still my favourite couple in this series.
Of course, the whole dilemma that comes with Vale's life possibly being endangered by his pregnancy plays a big role here. I think that's the part I liked most about this novella. Because the situation is heartbreaking with impossibly hard choices to make.
There is also a LOT of sex. Like mind-blowing amounts. tbh, just reading it made me tired, but these two are definitely loaded on Duracell batteries on a long term basis. (going on and on and on …)
Still, I enjoyed this, but didn’t really need it to enhance what I read in book 1 and 2.
Slow Heat, Alpha Heat and Bitter Heat are three of my favourite shifter books of any type of omegaverse.
So to get the chance to pop back into this world with a look at Jason and Vale's experiences during Vale's pregnancy from the inside was always going to be interesting for me. And, in the main, I really enjoyed it.
But I have a couple of niggles, although neither is a game-changer or ultimately took too much away from my enjoyment.
Firstly, far too many references to calling Jason baby alpha. As I believe this story was originally created for Leta's Patreon supporters, I can see that it's a testament of love to the people who have encouraged her creativity in spades.
But it got a little bit too much when the same phrase cropped up at least three times on the same page, never mind the same chapter. I was surprised to be honest, as I find Leta's books are usually sharp and not filled with repetition or extraneous detailing. A small point only.
Secondly, and I find myself surprised to be mentioning it to be honest, but there is a LOT of sex in this. Usually I have little issue with a sex-heavy book, especially in the hands of someone as talented as Leta when it comes to writing emotionally-driven expressions of desire and love.
However, again, I found myself thinking not again as another page came with yet another scene of Jason and Vale going at it.
Now, I will state that I don't believe it was unnecessary sex. In fact, a lot of it is absolutely vital to the plot because of the whole issue with Vale's scar tissue which played such a big part in their own book Slow Heat.
It would have been nice though, for me, to get a little bit more of them experiencing the pregnancy together, rather than just the sexual aspect of this particular omegaverse set-up, which sees the omegas become even more in need of fulfilment than usual and the alphas' inability to turn them down.
There is a bit of reference to Vale getting fed up of some elements of their encounters but, overall, it did seem like a scene was there every other page or so.
Overall though, I loved seeing this "behind the scenes" part of the world which had taken place in the background of Urho, Xan and Caleb's book mostly.
#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review
Who didn't love Vale and Jason? They're so perfect together. And it's great to get their story and keep up with what was going on with them while Xan and Urho are getting together. If you loved Slow Heat you definitely will want to read this one!
Jason and Vale being my favorites, I wish this story was book 2. If you have read Alpha Heat, you already know how story develops and ends in this one, taking the fun out of it. It even includes full conversations from the second book.
I'm not at all sure I was ready for this novella. I found some parts of it too much. Mostly the sexual part. But I appreciated it nonetheless. I adore Vale and Jason.
A perfect companion novella, taking place fours years after Slow Heat and simultaneously with Alpha Heat. A must for Jason & Vale fans!
It follows them throughout their pregnancy, from conception to birth. This won’t appeal to everyone and some of the earlier content is also of a sensitive nature. Yet, those first chapters were emotional and conveyed their turmoil perfectly. However, it wasn’t all anxiety laden. I appreciated seeing Yule (Jason’s father) in a softer light, Vale’s in-laws endearing enthusiasm, the excessive steam AND a wonderful outcome.
Sad to say goodbye to this couple but more than happy with their HEA.
This story does what it advertises to do. It follows Vale's pregnancy from conception to birth. Vale's pregnancy is a side plot in Alpha Heat so we all already know most of the details. So this story is basically a bonus by way of which we get to spend more time with Jason and Vale and gets lots and lots smut in the bargain. What's not to like?
Well, I was enjoying the story. Even though I already knew how the story ends it was fun being in this world again from another perspective. Then this happened-
"No doubt somewhere in the house Xan and Urho were having their fun, too. But there was no way what they shared could compare to his joy in Jason."
Immediately after, I stopped reading for a while then, I decided that I didn't really like Vale, after a while, I wondered if I was being too harsh and quick to judge so I decided to finish the story. But, even when the story ended I was not okay with this line.
I was not okay with this treatment of Urho & Xan's relationship as inferior to Jason & Vale's. Of course, you can argue that the latter are érosgápe and therefore maybe the relationship is inferior. But I call bullshit. Jason & Vale's relationship is socially acceptable and therefore is a real-life allegory to a heterosexual relationship while Urho & Xan share an illegal relationship, something taboo, something not socially acceptable and their relationship is a direct allegory for a homosexual one. And I swear to God, I am not reading MM Romance to be reminded in a roundabout fashion that homosexual relationships are inferior to heterosexual ones. And the worst part is every argument with the words érosgápe in it is even worse because I doubt it's something that people in homosexual relationships haven't heard before, how they weren't meant to be, how their relationship is against God, against their religion and God definitely didn't mean for it to happen which in context of this world is even worse. Because as we have been told érosgápe relationships are Wolf God's blessing and érosgápe relationships only happen between men and women.
I don't think the author meant for this to happen but unfortunately, I don't think there is another interpretation of Vale's words that would put this in a kinder light. This book on the basis of this one line turned head over heels for me. There is a lot of talk about alpha-alpha relationships when Vale gets Yule to spill on his own experiences and the message was clear that anyone who actually wanted it was debauched and of course his disdain over how Xan was clearly unmanned while his own son who was the one fucking Xan wasn't.
Vale really started irritating the hell out of me after this and I have come to the consensus that I don't like him and I definitely don't understand how he inspires such loyalty in people. This entire book he seems to be stirring up shit just so he wouldn't be bored and I am not okay with it.
I'm not okay with this book and I'm not okay with this story.
Slow Birth is book 2.5 of Leta Blake’s excellent Heat of Love series. It runs fairly concurrently with the events of book two, Alpha Heat, and is best read following that story. This book assumes knowledge of events that happen in that second story and will have some spoilers if you haven’t read it. There are also places where scenes are repeated here from a different character’s perspective. I haven’t read Alpha Heat in a while, but I had no problem following along here without rereading, however I definitely appreciated being familiar with the story.
This book reconnects us with Jason and Vale, my favorite characters of the series. I love their relationship dynamic and so I really enjoyed getting another book that focuses on them. This story is not particularly plot-heavy; most of the book is following along with Vale’s pregnancy, as well as lots (and LOTS) of steamy sex between them. To be clear, lots of sex here, folks. That’s not to say that there isn’t any substance. There is some definite tension, particularly early on as Vale and Jason grapple with what to do about the pregnancy. Jason feels like he really failed Vale by not being prepared for the surprise heat and not being able to solve the problem without getting him pregnant. He is absolutely terrified of losing Vale and I could definitely feel the emotion here as he wants the baby and wants Vale to be happy, but is just so scared of what this could mean for Vale. For his part, Vale wants the baby both for him and for Jason and wants to seize this chance while he has it.
Secret Elfangor decided to help make my morning merry & bright and I couldn't appreciate it more! <3 Thank you so much for the awesome gift, I know I'll love it. xx
This was hit and sexy. Nothing really new though from what happens in book 2. Just from different POVs this time. Fans of the series will enjoy. Note, there is LOTS of sex here.
A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review An Alisa Review:
Rating: 2 stars out of 5
This book just did not hit the mark for me. I mean I read Alpha heat so I know how it all works out in the end but was hoping for more of an in depth story. I felt what I got was way too much sex and too much emphasis on them being Érosgápe.
I understand that pregnancy is supposed to make omegas horny but it seemed all Jason and Vale did was have sex for a good 75% of the book and I can only read about how great their ass or cock feels before it’s just too repetitive and too much, I mean Bitter Heat had a pregnant omega and it wasn’t focused this much on the sex. I had trouble with them using their Érosgápe connection as the reasoning for everything like no other couple who are not Érosgápe wouldn’t have the type of connection at all and I felt it degraded Xan and Urho’s relationship from Alpha Heat even as they were supporting them.
I felt bad for Jason throughout the whole book because everyone blamed him and put everything on his shoulders if something went wrong (like the unexpected heat), like Vale wasn’t a person and couldn’t make his own decisions, and I don’t know it didn’t help with my frustration at all. The book was well written as usual I just felt it went off in the wrong direction.
The cover art by Dar Albert is very nice and I like that it is the same models that were used for Slow Heat.
It was so good to be back with Jason and Vale! After reading about what was going on with them in Alpha Heat, I couldn't wait for this novella. I would recommend reading this after the second book. This takes place about four years after Slow Heat and contemporaneously with Alpha Heat.
- Mpreg, omegaverse - Unexpected pregnancy - Lots of steamy times 🔥 - Plenty of feels - Will be angsty if you haven't read Alpha Heat yet
I'm glad I read this right after Alpha Heat since so much of it is the same story from Vale and Jason's POV. Great insights to both the MCs 4 years down the line from their story.
For someone that, until years turned her nose to mpreg, I seem to be enjoying it a lot lately.
Slow Birth shows how Jason and Vale got pregnant during the period of book 2 Alpha Heat. It might be interesting to read this one before book 3.
What can I say about this one except that it is INFLAMMABLE HOT! My lady Leta Blake was inspired and as usual, I am super here for it. Apparently being pregnant makes the omegas extra supper horny and Vale is nothing but a complete slut for it and I have no complains. Not to mention that Jason, my sweet adorable baby Alpha is probably one of my favorite characters ever. He’s so sweet. I love him.
I need more Jason and Vale in my life. Gimme more, Leta. Now that you made me like this, I can’t live without it.
Read it again because why the hell not when I absolutely love these characters! This book is ridiculously hot and I pray the day will come when Michael F. will narrate it. It’ll happen. 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
My prayers were answered and Michael F finally narrated this and man oh man it was absolutely everything that I was hoping for. Damn this book is hot. Seriously. Thank you baby Jesus for this gift. 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
It was a lovely ending to Jason and Vale’s story. Jason and Vale have made peace with the belief that Vale will never become pregnant due to health conditions. Circumstances change that, and now they are both faced with a high-risk pregnancy that may take Vale's life. There is a level of filthy & hot in this one that definitely surpasses book one. It has a ton of sex, like every page. If you're a fan of the series, this book is a must-read!
I really just couldn't get into this one. Really heavy on the graphic/squicky aspects of MPREG/pregnancy which are never my thing, and the smut was excessive and just contained a lot of kinks that are also not my jam. I also think the timing of this release was really odd, as it came out *after* book 3, and waaaay too long after books 1 & 2 that are the lead-up to this one. Just really not for me.
