The Weddings Game
“The Anglican Church in Christchurch, New Zealand, is seeking decent young women, well versed in housekeeping and child rearing, interested in entering into a Christian marriage with highly esteemed, well-situated members of our congregation.”
Gosh!... How desperate those women should be to embark in such a game. Or... on second thoughts... maybe not?! After all, in the 19th century, women were born and raised to be wives and mothers, which means they could probably see such an adventurous kind of marriage as an unmissable opportunity! So... maybe I was looking at the past with the eyes of the future!
“In the land of the long white cloud” portraits an era. It is not real but in the provided historical background, it could perfectly be!

I read the English version of this novel. It started strong with the story of two women making their way to New Zealand in the mid-1800's to start their new lives as wives of men they had never met. Helen had answered an ad to become a wife under fraudulent circumstances. Gwyn, the daughter of a proper English Lord, was betrothed to the son of a man who had, in effect, won her in a poker game from her father. Both were disappointed in their lives as sheep farmers in the NZ outback.
As soon as the women arrive in NZ, the story begins to fall apart and flounder, dragging on to a great extent. While the story is of the two women, it is also told from the point-of-view of the husbands, their children and the Maori natives. It very simply gets lost in trying to be the sweeping saga of a new nation. And it doesn't work.
Still, the story itself is not a bad one although it is full of unlikely coincidences and convenient meetings and, ultimately, convenient deaths. Perhaps in the hands of a better writer, this would have been a better book.

No se por dónde empezar a hablar de este libro. Me gustó tanto la historia, los personajes y la forma en que está escrito que me lo devoré, a pesar de ser relativamente largo.
Hace mucho que no sufría tanto por los protagonistas de un libro, quizás porque uno siempre asume que van a estar bien (a menos que estés leyendo a George R. R. Martin), pero en este caso sentí casi desde el principio que cualquier cosa podía ocurrir, y creo que eso es en gran parte lo que lo vuelve tan bueno.
Hay dos protagonistas y dos historias paralelas que resulta obvio desde el comienzo que se irán entrelazando. Una de las cosas curiosas es que una de las dos mujeres tiene mucha más historia y más apariciones que la otra, y sin embargo a las dos se las siente como principales.
Es una lectura ágil con protagonistas absolutamente opuestas en todo lo que dos personas pueden serlo. Es una novela histórica y dramática, con algunos toques de romance. Si bien el argumento en primer momento puede parecer el de una historia romántica más, no se dejen engañar, el amor quedará bastante en segundo plano.
Estamos en la época Victoriana.
Helen es una institutriz londinense que no ha tenido una vida fácil y cuya situación actual no es exactamente ideal. Ella (además de tener un airecito a Jane Eyre) es educada, refinada y estricta, y se está acercando peligrosamente a la edad de ser considerada "solterona". Es por eso, y por motivos más prácticos que sentimentales, que decide responder a un anuncio emitido en Nueva Zelanda en el que se invita a señoritas educadas a emigrar, con la perspectiva de casarse con un hombre honesto que busca esposa.
La otra protagonista es Gwyneira, una joven galesa de familia acomodada que siente muchísimo más interés por la cría y pastoreo de ovejas que por las actividades propias de una dama. Ella es educada pero rebelde, indómita y desestructurada. No es la clásica heredera aburrida, sino que su personalidad la lleva a no conformarse con conversaciones superficiales y prefiere el trabajo y sentirse útil. Ella también viajará a Nueva Zelanda para casarse con un hombre al que no conoce, aunque las circunstancias de su compromiso sean bastante inusuales.
Las historias de Gwyn y Helen no podrían ser más opuestas. Irónicas, casi. Ninguna de las dos va a tener una vida fácil. Los deseos y habilidades de una son las obligaciones e ignorancia de la otra.
La inocencia de las dos respecto del sexo y otras cosas de la vida es muy dulce y terrorífica (por ellas) a la vez. Pero así era en esa época. La ambientación parece muy bien hecha, salvo por algún que otro detallecito menor del que no estoy totalmente segura, como por ejemplo una dama bien educada poniendo los ojos en blanco demasiado seguido.
Me animo a decir que la autora es fiel lectora de Jane Austen y Charlotte Brontë.
Hay muchos personajes en este libro, y a medida que los años van pasando iremos recordando y olvidando a muchos. Durante el viaje en barco a Nueva Zelanda, Helen dará clases a un grupo de huerfanitas a las que les espera un destino incierto y a quienes la vida las tratará de formas muy diferentes. Son todas muy queribles, cada una con una personalidad muy distinta de la otra.
Todos están muy bien creados, pero creo que los que más se destacan son los malvados y mesquinos que irán mostrando sus verdaderos colores con el correr del tiempo. Hay uno en especial a quien le estuve deseando una muerte horrible durante gran parte del libro.
Todo puede ocurrir. Es muy realista esta historia, incluso en cosas que hubiera deseado tener menos detalles (como la caza de ballenas y focas) pero que hacen a la época. No muestra una visión acaramelada de la vida de las mujeres, o de la vida en general. Era una época dura en la que se esperaba ciertas cosas de una esposa, y esas cosas debían ser cumplidas.
El final me pareció muy bueno y no quedó ningún cabo suelto, lo que es admirable, siendo que hay tantos personajes.
Este libro jugó con mis emociones como muy pocas veces me pasó. Me encontré sufriendo sinceramente por las protagonistas, ansiosa, nerviosa y más de una vez al borde de las lágrimas al ver que algo inevitable iba a ocurrirles... y no es nada frecuente que me pase eso.
Muy, muy recomendado para quienes quieran leer una buena novela histórica con mujeres fuertes e ingeniosas que no se dejan amedrentar por su situación.

Fleurette no era una niña tranquila y fácil de contentar como Ruben. Era vivaracha, muy exigente y se encolerizaba cuando no conseguía sus propósitos. Entonces juraba como un carretero, se ponía roja y, en caso extremo, escupía. Fleurette Warden, con casi cuatro años de edad, no era sin lugar a dudas una lady.
Hay muchos personajes en este libro, y a medida que los años van pasando iremos recordando y olvidando a muchos. O Jogo dos Casamentos

Para quem já leu Jane Austen, a resposta é fácil: Matrimónio, Matrimónio, Matrimónio! Para quem nunca leu Jane Austen, a resposta é a mesma, pois não há outra além dessa 😜.
E... quando uma simples donzela é nada e criada para constituir família, uma aventura desta envergadura será possivelmente encarada como uma oportunidade imperdível...
“No País da Nuvem Branca” é a história de duas donzelas que embarcaram na dita aventura. É um retrato duma época e uma ficção que facilmente passaria por verdade!... 🌟🌟🌟🌟

¡¡Un libro precioso!! Con esta autora me sucedió algo similar que con Kate Morton, en el sentido que avanzas en la lectura casi sin darte cuenta de las más de 700 páginas.
Si bien es un libro bastante estereotipado en su género y también bastante previsible, realmente fue un gozo leerlo. Descripciones y personajes maravillosos que me trajeron inmediatamente a la mente películas como "Australia" y "La lección de piano". Nos habla de amor y pasión, también extensivo hacia la tierra que se está colonizando.
Destaco una resolución de conflictos muy cuidada, que deja un muy buen sabor, aunque quizá el único pero es que ésta llega muy rápido en comparación de los dos primeros tercios de la novela. Lo recomiendo de todas maneras.

Uma saga passada na distante Nova Zelândia. 2 mulheres arriscam começar as suas vidas num país desconhecido. Gostei do que li, mesmo sendo descrito em quase 700 páginas. Venha o próximo livro da saga, que eu quero muito ler

I had to give up on this. I am not sure where the blame lies but either the author or the translator has:
Wales as a part of England
New Zealanders circa 1860 using the word "Mom"
New Zealand currency unit described as "dollars" instead of pounds
...these and several dozen other colloquial missteps and factual errors made the story almost impossible to get lost in.
Since it's a fairly straight-forward soap saga (a genre I enjoy from time to time) I can make a good argument for these nitpicky (excep the Wales thing) errors. But the actual story sort of washes away bit by awkward bit.

I did not expect to like this book. It's a 700 page "sweeping epic" [said with the requisite eye roll] promising small-r romance and more than you'd ever want to know about sheep farming in late 1800s New Zealand. In other words, over 700 reasons for me not to read this book. But I have a fascination with New Zealand (the impact of colonialism on native cultures, in particular) and I'm a sucker for any kind of Big Adventure. Strong female characters + Adventure = why not?!
The good: the novel starts strong, the characters are interesting and (for the most part) realistic, and the plot is compelling. While the writing is, at times, clunky and a bit overblown but this may be the fault of the translator. I was more than willing to overlook a few linguistic inconsistencies and head-scratchers because the meat of the story was strong.
The bad: they're in rural New Zealand in the 1880s on a sheep farm but never a single mention of the bug bites, the mud, the shit? For the sake of small-r romance (no one wants to get it on in a barn that is swarming with flies and smells like dung... not sexy), Lark unintentionally traipsed into the land of capital-R Romantic literature and this is where she lost me. Like bad Romantic literature, everything in this novel was too clean. The farms, the houses, the children, the story. Even the "war" between Maori and the colonists is a bloodless short-lived thing. Lark wraps everything up too neatly and it's all a bit too coincidental: the deaths, the marriages, the births, all of it.
All that said, I don't know if I'd be thrilled to spend another 700 pages in Lark's New Zealand but I could see myself trying out other of her work should translations become available.

Ambas com o objectivo comum de encontrar a felicidade num país longínquo e com novas oportunidades, vão em busca de uma vida de sonho.
Este livro é o verdadeiro romance, sobre estas duas protagonistas e a forma como conseguem dar a volta num país distante e muito diferente do seu.
É uma história dramática, que tanto nos enche como aperta o coração, é cheia de reviravoltas, cheia de personagens e passa-se ao longo de vários anos.
É muito sobre as mulheres e sobre a sua independência (ou dependência), sobrevivência e sucesso num país longínquo com todas as barreiras inerentes.
Sobre a família, sobre o poder, sobre legado e descendência, sobre o verdadeiro amor e sobre o passado. Também sobre o respeito, admiração e amizade.
Está muito bem escrito, são muitas páginas que se lêem muito bem e sem parar. Muito bom para quem gosta de um bom romance e de sagas familiares.
Este é o primeiro livro de uma trilogia que li muito bem acompanhada no #sofialibraryclub e a opinião foi unânime. Um dos preferidos ❤️

Citind cartea lui Sarah Lark aș putea să jur că am fost în Noua Zeelandă și am văzut cu ochii mei pășunile întinse de un verde intens, munții cenușii cu zăpadă pe vârfuri, râurile cu apă cristalină, dar mai ales am putut să simt liniștea. Acea liniște pe care ți-o oferă doar natura unui astfel de loc, un loc în care omul reprezintă doar o treime din întreg, în care el, prin ambițiile lui tot mai mari, nu reușise încă să distrugă echilibrul.
Cineva spunea despre Sarah Lark că te face să-ți fie dor de locuri pe care nu le-ai văzut niciodată. Este cât se poate de adevărat. Oh, da. Aproape că îmi vine să-mi fac bagajul și să îmi iau un bilet doar dus către Noua Zeelandă!

This is the story of two young women from England and Wales in the 1850s traveling by ship to colonial New Zealand at the beginning of its colonization. It's about friendship, it has a little romance, and some adventure. You will be reading about two heroines I found that I enjoyed both women. Helen is going as a mail order bride and Gwyneira a sheep Baron's young and wild daughter who was pretty much won in a Blackjack game. I enjoyed the narrative style of the author and could not put the book down. You get all of the family history for both women and it includes several decades with all the happy and terrible things that happen in their lives. The two main characters have a lot of interesting supporting characters, some are wonderful and some are not The description of New Zealand is vividly told. The end of the story flows very well and everything ended without feeling forced. The whole book was interesting if you like Sagas you will enjoy this one.

He leído varías ficciones históricas y este libro lo tiene todo. El drama siempre está presente, es una saga familiar y creceremos con los personajes, tiene su buena dosis de romance y te explican demasiado bien el contexto histórico.
El ritmo del libro es buenísimo, se lee rápido y ayuda un montón el hecho que siempre te mantiene enganchada, más que nada con todos los sucesos que ocurren.
De todas se va al top 5 de mis lecturas favs del año y solo necesito seguir con la trilogía.
Si les gusta outlander tienen que darle una chance.

No exagero si os digo dos cosas. La primera, que “En el país de la nube blanca” ha pasado directamente al número uno en mi ranking personal de mejores lecturas del año, y la segunda que, tal y como me acabé el libro, me arrepentí de no habérmelo leído antes habiéndolo tenido tantísimo tiempo en casa.
Siendo sincera, no lo empecé antes porque sus casi 750 páginas me echaban para atrás, lo veía muy largo y, por si fuera poco, un inicio de trilogía, pero la verdad es que nada más cogerlo me atrapó por completo. La autora nos presenta esta historia mediante una narración en tercera persona que profundiza, sobre todo, en los pensamientos y sentimientos de las dos protagonistas, aunque cuando la ocasión lo requiere y a medida que van apareciendo más personajes esenciales, nos va mostrando también sus emociones, lo cual enriquece, más si cabe, la trama.
El ritmo de la historia es constante, ya que durante su totalidad ocurren cosas que, aunque no siempre te tengan en vilo, hacen que no puedas parar de leer. Sarah Lark consigue que te intereses desde un primer momento por esas dos familias y mantiene ese interés hasta el final, lo que se ve favorecido por la contextualización histórica y la ambientación que ha creado de esa Nueva Zelanda en colonización.
En lo que respecta a los personajes, he de decir que me han gustado muchísimo: todos ellos tienen un trasfondo que los hace únicos y los diferencia del resto, lo que hace que empatices con ellos de forma casi instintiva. Aunque esto es un punto a favor, he de decir que las protagonistas, Gwyneira y Helen, son las que verdaderamente influyen en el lector por sus caracteres tan dispares pero, a la vez, por compartir una profunda amistad y una fuerza y valentía que hace que superen unos obstáculos tras otros.
¿Alguien más que también haya descubierto a Sarah Lark a través de este libro?, ¿os ha gustado? A mi me ha conquistado. De hecho, ya tengo las continuaciones de la trilogía en mi estantería, a la espera (no muy larga) de que me vuelva a sumergir en la Nueva Zelanda del siglo XIX.

Za sve ljubitelje, a ja sam ta, predivnog romana Matildin posljednji valcer, preporučujem ovu odličnu porodičnu sagu. Radnja je smještena na Novi Zeland, Zemlju bijelog oblaka kako su je nazivali domoroci Maori. Bijeli doseljenici sa sobom donose svoje običaje, način života kojem se miroljubivi, ali ipak neobični Maori uglavnom prilagođavaju sve dok se ne obrazuju toliko da shvate da ih bijelci iskorištavaju i tada počinju problemi...Društvo britanskih doseljenika opet, iako naizgled veoma moralno i patrijarhalno, zapravo ispod te površine krije mnoštvo zabranjenih strasti, prljavih spletki, loših namjera...Žene čine okosnicu romana i one su ovdje, iako ne javni, stvarni stubovi porodice i društva. One kao takve pokretač su novih vjetrova promjena koji donose emancipaciju bijelih žena i obrazovanje domorodaca. Kao i u slučaju Australije, priroda i ovdje utiče u velikoj mjeri na stanovnike, zemlja, ovce, ovčarski psi, konji, toliko su značajni da većinom i pokreću dramatične događaje. I pored značajnog broja stranica roman se čita lako, sa nesmanjenim zanimanjem, jer autorica vješto pripovjeda i međusobno prepliće životne sudbine likova. Drago mi je da postoji nastavak romana i zato odmah i nastavljam sa Pjesmom Maora...

Viele Jahre voller Freundschaft und Familiengeschichte vor ganz toller Kulisse - und viele Zufälle - ergeben eine epische Geschichte.
Unglaublich ist vor allem das Setting. Vor allem der Blick durch die Augen der Neuankömmlinge aber auch den Blick der eingeborenen Maori auf ihr Land.
Das Buch ist in vielerlei Hinsicht interessant und so unglaublich verstrickt. Und dazu bildhaft und lebendig geschrieben. Es gibt zwar keinen richtigen Spannungsbogen, fesselt aber total, ist dicht an Ereignissen und man geht richtig mit!
Die kultivierte Helen, bewarb sich als Braut und will den Farmer Howard überraschen. Wildfang Gwyn, die Tochter eines Lords, wurde von diesem beim Poker verspielt und muss nun zu ihrem Zukünftigen. Der eine Mann ist aber ganz anders als beschrieben und viel ungehobelter, der Andere ist, wie beschrieben, ein Gentleman, scheint aber nicht an seiner Versprochenen interessiert.
Beide heiraten, leben und entwickeln sich ganz unterschiedlich, bleiben aber immer eng verbunden - obwohl zwischen ihren neuen Familien eine jahrelange Feindschaft herrscht.
Die Figure - ob liebenswert, bemitleidenswert, verachtenswert oder verhasst - sind komplex und greifbar. Mit allen erlebt man ein Auf und Ab der Gefühle, fiebert mit durch Liebe, Hass, Geheimnisse und Streitigkeiten.
Schade finde ich, wie über die Jahre Helen immer mehr in den Hintergrund rückt und es fast nur noch um Gwyn geht, obwohl es der Geschichte nicht schadet.

This book in my opinion was really good.
Which makes me want to clarify something. The reviews for this title were all over the place. Some hated it, some loved it.
It is not an easy book, first of all it rather long and some of the content is rather disturbing.
However I would like to point out the reasons why I really liked it.
One.
The setting-
Almost the whole story, except for in the beginning take place in New Zealand. Now for those of you who have seen The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, know what a beautiful setting this land has to offer. However to see it through the eyes of these two young women, you come to appreciate it more. The land plays apart of the story as well as the characters, you find it isn't an easy place to live.
Two.
The two main characters-
You will love the two main characters which are polar opposites but find a friendship that they both will cherish while living in a new surrounding.
Helen is a respectable woman who longs for a family, she is a governess when she answers an ad in a newspaper to marry a complete stranger in New Zealand. She is not very rich, so her prospects are limited and plus she is 27 (which is considered old when it comes to marriage in 18-century England)
Gweyneira is from a well to do Welsh family, whose father lost her in a card game against a "sheep baron" of New Zealand. She takes the chance to escape a life that she finds rather boring for what she sees as an adventure of a lifetime.
These two met for the first time on the boat taking them to New Zealand, where you also meet some orphans which Helen has been put in charge.
You see New Zealand was lacking in respectable woman at the time and those who lived there wanted to have English maids instead of the natives.
(Oh well you will see what happens in the book)

I didn't know anything about Native New Zealand before reading this book, the author did her research well in this respect.
Now to some criticisms-
This is not a happy book, oh yes everything ends well, but there is just one struggle after another to get there. It reminds you life is hard, especially if you don't know how to milk a cow or love a mule. Love is even harder, but you find it eventually.
There is a love story in this book, but to tell you the truth, I wasn't even sure if I wanted it to happen in the end or not. Mostly because I was exhausted by the time I was done reading this. (My one thought, why don't these two give up and go on a vacation somewhere).
However like I said everything ends well.
I wanted to add that this was a translation, the original was written in German by the author and translated rather well into the English version.

Ein fantastischer Roman, der alles beinhaltet was ich mir vorgestellt habe. Die Geschichte zweier Frauen, die nach Neuseeland auswandern und ihr Schicksal nehmen wie es kommt. Ein Generationen-Roman mit Liebe & Hass, Freundschaft und Intrigen, Kulturen die aufeinander treffen und Charaktere die man liebt oder hasst. Wer Geschichten a la Dornenvögel mag, wird auch "Im Land der weißen Wolke" lieben. Sobald mein SuB etwas abgearbeitet ist, werde ich diese Reihe fortsetzen.

Es el primero de una trilogía increíble que fue un éxito en todo el mundo. Vamos a ir subiendo reseñas de los otros dos también.
Un libro muy bonito y entretenido, te engancha desde el principio! Describe muy bien el paisaje y los personajes, lo que hace muy fácil imaginar un país tan lejano como Nueva Zelanda en su colonización.
Aunque es un libro bastante largo, la lectura se hace rápida y sencilla. No te darás ni cuenta y ya habrás terminado la primera parte.

A romantic saga set in the mid to late 1800s in New Zealand. The first in a series, it centres on the lives of two very different young women, each embarking from Wales on a new life in one of the colonies. While they are from vastly different backgrounds, Gwyneira, a lord’s daughter, and Helen, a struggling governess, they are both destined to marry men they have never met, in this new land of sheep farming at the end of the world.
Lark’s story covers not only the individual struggles of these two women in a foreign land, but also the fate of the orphan girls Helen was charged with chaperoning to New Zealand as servants and the conflicts between the Maori natives and the pakeha—the colonists. Multi-generational in scope, the depiction of New Zealand’s landscape and the natural environment is accurate and evocative. The concept of the novel is really promising, particularly if you like historical fiction, however the elementary writing and predictability of the plot made it a disappointing read.
There are LOTS of clichés and I started to really roll my eyes towards the end and became very impatient to get to the end and on to something else! Recommend if you love easy historical romance stories.

O poveste vie și colorată pe niște meleaguri superbe. Autoarea te cucerește cu decorurile create, cu personajele ei pline de viață, cu tradițiile maorilor și ale coloniştilor, cu relația dintre animale și stăpânii lor și cu viața simplă, în strânsă legătură cu natura, din Noua Zeelandă. Cu siguranță e o trilogie ce merită citită, nu neapărat pentru acțiune, ci pentru sentimentul și imaginea pe care le transmite. Nu am mai citit de multă vreme un roman așa simplu și frumos, cu oameni simpli, cu muncă de țară și la țară, cu tradiții și obiceiuri păstrate cu sfințenie și cu iubire, în cea mai pură formă. Povestea e complexă și nu poate fi redată, căci se întinde pe mulți ani, urmărind mai multe generații. Apar foarte multe personaje, dar autoarea nu lasă pe niciunul în urmă și fiecare are parte de povestea lui. Mi-au plăcut foarte mult toate personajele, sunt foarte bine construite. Romanul curge ușor, povestea te prinde imediat și te poartă într-o altă lume. I-am scăzut o steluță pentru că a fost ușor previzibil și a dat în telenovelă la un moment dat, dar finalul mi-a plăcut, iar următorul volum promite multe.

Mi-era dor de o poveste de acest gen, cu personaje multe, cu atmosferă de epocă, locuri exotice, cu suișuri și coborâșuri și, mai ales, cu certitudinea că povestea nu se va termina la ultima pagină a volumului. Sarah Lark reușește să descrie o Nouă Zeelandă după care să tânjești. Descrierele sale sunt minunate, te facă să vezi cu ochii minții marea, câmpurile, munții, minele de cărbuni, lucruri frumoase și lucruri urâte. Personajele Sarei Lark suferă îndelung, trăesc intens și stârnesc în tine iubire sau ură cu aceeași pasiune. De câte ori lași cartea din mână rămâi cu dor să vezi ce au mai făcut personajele între timp.

Este livro foi uma excelente surpresa. Desde que a Editora Marcador o deu a conhecer, fiquei encantada com a sua sinopse e com a capa, que a meu ver é bastante bonita. Assim, depois de ter estado na estante durante uns tempinhos, decidi lê-lo. E posso dizer que fiquei muito, muito satisfeita. No País da Nuvem Branca é um romance muito interessante. É uma saga familiar, que abarca um período de cerca de vinte anos da vida das personagens.
Tudo começa quando Helen Davenport, professora particular na casa dos Greenwood, lê um anúncio no jornal da igreja em que se propõe a ida de jovens casadoiras para a Nova Zelândia, a fim de formar família e, assim, ajudar a colonizar as ilhas. Helen decide arriscar e quando um homem lhe envia uma carta muito bem escrita, através da responsável pela “expedição das noivas”, Helen decide partir para conhecer o seu futuro esposo. Noutra perspetiva, Gwyneira Silkham, uma jovem nobre, filha de um cavalheiro fazendeiro exportador e criador de ovelhas e cães-pastores, vê-se a braços com a ida “forçada” para a Nova Zelândia, depois do comprador de ovelhas de visita à mansão da família ter jogado blackjack com o seu pai e de este ter apostado a mão da sua filha em casamento com o filho do comprador, Gerard Warden, pai de Lucas Warden. Assim, Gwyn, jovem e aventureira, parte com esperança de conhecer o seu amor, na espera de este ser também um homem dado à aventura. Mas as duas mulheres cedo descobrem que o que elas acreditavam ser uma maravilhosa oportunidade acaba por se tornar numa rede de acontecimentos que para sempre vão mudar as suas vidas e as daqueles que as rodeiam. Tanto Helen como Gwyn ficam amigas a bordo do barco que as leva para a sua nova terra (o Dublin), mas a sua amizade não pode acontecer porque os homens a que pertencem são inimigos de longa data. Howard O’Keefe, noivo de Helen, e Gerard Warden, futuro sogro de Gywn têm uma contenda muito grande que mais cedo ou mais tarde tem tudo para explodir e por as duas famílias em perigo.
Esta história é um tanto diferente das que tenho lido e isso agradou-me bastante. Não tenho muitos livros que tenham como base uma saga familiar, pelo menos no plano real (não da fantasia). É uma história que, não sendo verídica, podia muito bem ter acontecido, e é ancorada num contexto histórico bastante interessante e rico: a colonização da Nova Zelândia e as relações entre colonos e maoris (o povo indígena do país). Todo o contexto histórico está bem descrito e bem fundamentado. Não conhecia muito sobre este país e foi uma excelente forma de me iniciar nos conhecimentos sobre a História da Nova Zelândia, mesmo não sendo um romance histórico com personagens verídicas. Fiquei muito interessada e curiosa com os costumes dos maoris e com forma como os colonos se estabeleceram e como o país foi evoluindo. Uma vez que a história abarca um período de vinte anos, a evolução está bastante presente e é visível: desde a caça à baleia e às focas, até à produção de gado ovino, passando para bovino, e depois, a febre do ouro. A construção das cidades, como começaram por ser terrinhas com algumas habitações de madeira até se tornarem cidades importantes; tudo está muito bem retratado.
As personagens também são excelentes e a sua evolução é enorme. Não são personagens simples e planas, mas sim complexas e bastante reais. São personagens com motivos reais e nada nelas é forçado. Não há personagens estereotipadas ou com comportamentos fúteis. Tudo o que as move tem um motivo e esse motivo é sempre plausível, compreensível e complexo. Este aspeto é um dos que mais me agradou: personagens humanas, nada fúteis e com motivos interessantes e que se tornam mais complexos, com o passar do tempo e com o que lhes vai acontecendo ao longo da trama. Gostei muito de Helen e de Gwyn. Ambas são bastante distintas e muito bem caracterizadas. A respeito dos homens, também gostei de todos, principalmente na medida da complexidade das suas vidas e personalidades. Não há propriamente vilões ou personagens “boazinhas”; há sim personagens fortes, com passados fortes e com histórias que se vão construindo ao longo do tempo, entrelaçando e ramificando, tornando-se cada vez mais complexas e interessantes. Nenhuma personagem está lá só para estar: todas fazem falta e todas têm um papel a desempenhar.
Todo o cenário é maravilhoso. Muito bem descrito, sem exagero. A ação é total. É um romance cheio de ação, aventura, tragédia, amor, amizade e luta. Não é uma história “cor-de-rosa”, nem por sombras! É uma história com bastante “sumo”. Tem um conteúdo muito forte, que me agradou bastante. Não tem nada de “lamechas”, coisa que não gosto de encontra nas histórias. Quando me proponho ler um livro, principalmente um romance, espero encontrar uma história forte, que me agarre, que me faça alegrar, sofrer e viver com as personagens, que me faça querer saber mais, querer ler até saber o final. E este livro proporcionou, sem dúvida, tudo isto.
As reviravoltas são muitas, nada fica parado. É um dos melhores livros que li este ano e vai ficar no meu coração e no meu pensamento durante muito, muito tempo. Gostava muito de ver esta história passada para o grande ecrã, pois teria tudo para ser um grande filme. É uma história arrebatadora, com momentos de grande ternura, com outros de grande tensão e com alguns de descontração. Recomendo sem reservas! Leiam, porque é maravilhoso. Uma saga familiar espetacular. Excelente aposta da Marcador. Espero que editem os restantes, pois este é o primeiro.
Tudo começa quando Helen Davenport, professora particular na casa dos Greenwood, lê um anúncio no jornal da igreja em que se propõe a ida de jovens casadoiras para a Nova Zelândia, a fim de formar família e, assim, ajudar a colonizar as ilhas. Helen decide arriscar e quando um homem lhe envia uma carta muito bem escrita, através da responsável pela “expedição das noivas”, Helen decide partir para conhecer o seu futuro esposo. Noutra perspetiva, Gwyneira Silkham, uma jovem nobre, filha de um cavalheiro fazendeiro exportador e criador de ovelhas e cães-pastores, vê-se a braços com a ida “forçada” para a Nova Zelândia, depois do comprador de ovelhas de visita à mansão da família ter jogado blackjack com o seu pai e de este ter apostado a mão da sua filha em casamento com o filho do comprador, Gerard Warden, pai de Lucas Warden. Assim, Gwyn, jovem e aventureira, parte com esperança de conhecer o seu amor, na espera de este ser também um homem dado à aventura. Mas as duas mulheres cedo descobrem que o que elas acreditavam ser uma maravilhosa oportunidade acaba por se tornar numa rede de acontecimentos que para sempre vão mudar as suas vidas e as daqueles que as rodeiam. Tanto Helen como Gwyn ficam amigas a bordo do barco que as leva para a sua nova terra (o Dublin), mas a sua amizade não pode acontecer porque os homens a que pertencem são inimigos de longa data. Howard O’Keefe, noivo de Helen, e Gerard Warden, futuro sogro de Gywn têm uma contenda muito grande que mais cedo ou mais tarde tem tudo para explodir e por as duas famílias em perigo.
Esta história é um tanto diferente das que tenho lido e isso agradou-me bastante. Não tenho muitos livros que tenham como base uma saga familiar, pelo menos no plano real (não da fantasia). É uma história que, não sendo verídica, podia muito bem ter acontecido, e é ancorada num contexto histórico bastante interessante e rico: a colonização da Nova Zelândia e as relações entre colonos e maoris (o povo indígena do país). Todo o contexto histórico está bem descrito e bem fundamentado. Não conhecia muito sobre este país e foi uma excelente forma de me iniciar nos conhecimentos sobre a História da Nova Zelândia, mesmo não sendo um romance histórico com personagens verídicas. Fiquei muito interessada e curiosa com os costumes dos maoris e com forma como os colonos se estabeleceram e como o país foi evoluindo. Uma vez que a história abarca um período de vinte anos, a evolução está bastante presente e é visível: desde a caça à baleia e às focas, até à produção de gado ovino, passando para bovino, e depois, a febre do ouro. A construção das cidades, como começaram por ser terrinhas com algumas habitações de madeira até se tornarem cidades importantes; tudo está muito bem retratado.
As personagens também são excelentes e a sua evolução é enorme. Não são personagens simples e planas, mas sim complexas e bastante reais. São personagens com motivos reais e nada nelas é forçado. Não há personagens estereotipadas ou com comportamentos fúteis. Tudo o que as move tem um motivo e esse motivo é sempre plausível, compreensível e complexo. Este aspeto é um dos que mais me agradou: personagens humanas, nada fúteis e com motivos interessantes e que se tornam mais complexos, com o passar do tempo e com o que lhes vai acontecendo ao longo da trama. Gostei muito de Helen e de Gwyn. Ambas são bastante distintas e muito bem caracterizadas. A respeito dos homens, também gostei de todos, principalmente na medida da complexidade das suas vidas e personalidades. J’ai tellement adoré ce livre. Il vient de déclasser tous les autres pour mon meilleur livre de l’année. Une saga historique sur fond de Nouvelle-Zélande dans les années 1850. L’histoire est toujours prenante avec tous les personnages, l’action n’arrête jamais, mais on apprend en même temps beaucoup sur l’histoire du pays, les maoris, les tensions... J’ai vraiment hâte d’amorcer le deuxième tome.

Since my library didn't have a copy, I was delighted to find that it was available for free from Kindle. For many years, I've been attracted to Australia, and have read many books about the country. This is the first I remember seeing about New Zealand, and I really wanted to read it. It is light reading (chick-lit I think) but the characters are well formulated. At first I couldn't stop reading it. My interest wained toward the latter part--it's a long book. I did a little Internet searching about New Zealand, but don't know whether the information concerning the Maori (people who inhabited the islands, when explorers first arrived) is accurate. I'll depend on my GR friend from NZ to let me know. This tome is the first of several books about NZ, but I'm not sure I will read the others. I think I may look for some other books about NZ. However, as an introduction to the history and a good family saga, I definitely recommend this book.

More rape than romance.
I had picked this up as a light romantic complement to my other dark/scary/serious reads. I thought this would be a historical fiction version of my favorite romance series Escape to New Zealand. It's none of those things. It's a sad rapey VC Andrews kind of story. And not the good VC Andrews. No it is not. I grant you that I put this book down at 60% when one of the main male characters was asking himself if killing a baby animal would make him a man. I had one answer:
YOU LOST YOUR MAN CARD WHEN YOU SAT THERE AND WATCHED YOUR DAD RAPE YOUR WIFE.
Maybe I missed out on some epic ending that would have validated me slugging out the last 40% but I don't care. I have a long TBR and this book isn't getting any more of my time.

The funny thing is that I read this book while nursing my second daughter, and I read The Thornbirds while nursing my first. The two books were similar in many ways...multi generational stories about life, love, and working the land despite what nature has dealt them. It was a fun read and interesting as I hadn't given much thought to New Zealand as a country before. Plus I love those "as God as my witness" powerful female characters who work their fingers to the bone day in and day out just to save their families, and this book had more than a few of them.

Me había dado error al publicar la míni opinión. Es una historia que me ha gustado mucho, con la que he aprendido un montón de la época (1820-1870 aproximadamemte) y de las costumbres de los maories.
Los personajes también me han encantado. Había leído quejas sobre que había mucho drama pero no me ha parecido así. Hay que recordar que en esa época no había lo mismo que ahora y por lo tanto era más fácil morir en un parto o en un accidente de caballo por poner un ejemplo

I am so sad I finished reading it! What a great novel. I watched the characters unfold beautifully and came to love them, hate them and love them again. A story about being true to yourself, finding your place in the world, and ultimately conquering obstacles through love. Beautiful story and beautifully written.
