Colby Martin remains obstinately hopeful that the church can change the world.

Having experienced his fair share of pain and rejection from mainstream Christianity, Colby is awake to the flaws, tragic missteps, and misplaced earnestness that too often define the direction of the church. But God’s vision for creation as revealed in Jesus still compels him - a window into a way of being human that fosters wholeness, and can move communities away from shame into vulnerable, flourishing connection.

As author of “UnClobber: Rethinking our Misuse of the Bible on Homosexuality” and, “The Shift: Surviving and Thriving after Moving from Conservative to Progressive Christianity,” Colby has emerged as one of the leading voices of the Progressive Christian movement.

Together with his Co-Pastor and wife, Kate, they founded and lead Sojourn Grace Collective in San Diego, CA, while enjoying life with their four sons.

Colby is passionate about carving out a space within Christianity that includes:

a whole-heartedly affirming posture toward LGBTQ individuals,

a broader acceptance of other spiritual practices and religious perspectives,

an agreeableness toward science,

and a commitment to always growing, transforming, and trusting that the best days are yet to come.

Colby is currently partnering with other progressive Christian churches as a co-director for Launchpad Partners Inc, an organization committed to planting and resourcing similar faith communities all across the country.

It is Colby’s deeply held belief that when people are reminded they are loved children of God, wholly and exactly as they are, they begin to live from a place of freedom. His work as author and pastor aims to point us toward that freedom, stubbornly, hopefully, until we believe in it. Until we can live in it, that the church - fully loved, liberated, and empowered - may continue the long work of changing the world.

It's almost impossible to review this book without a lot of self-disclosure that doesn't really belong on Goodreads, so I'll keep it short: are you becoming a more Progressive Christian? Do you find yourself feeling thrilled and yet reluctant to move forward into a new community that better fits who you are now rather than who you were as a 15 year old girl in a purity culture? Are you trying to understand how to carve out a new faith for yourself that keeps Jesus but loses the parts of Christianity you can't stomach anymore like white supremacy, child abuse, rampant destructive patriarchy, the subjugation of women, the hammering of bible verses like a weapon? THEN THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU.

Written by a pastor, this book does a great job of walking you through all the hard parts of moving away from conservatism towards more progressive Christianity, from the questions of "Who do I say Jesus is?" to "how to reconcile past beliefs and behaviors". Every page, for me, had quotes that I sent friends, and aside from some *questionable* metaphors, this was an incredible read that brought back for me how Rachel Held Evan's book "Searching for Sunday" changed my entire life.

As I continue on my faith path, this was an important stepping stone.

Colby Martin is my hero. I am so inspired by the way he explains his journey, and helps us all to make our own. If church has hurt you bad - and maybe you've even given up on it...well, I think you should just give Colby's new book a try. There's a kind of Jesus following out there that feels a lot more Jesus than the way a lot of us were raised.

Colby was able to articulate in words things that I have been thinking and feeling for a long time. And as he so eloquently communicates in the book: the journey to “Progressive Christianity” can feel lonely. Colby’s words helped me to feel a lot less lonely, and even made me braver.

Though I’m still not sure if I fully identify with the label of a “Progressive Christian” (because of the christian part, not the progressive part - I fully identify with the progressive part), I found a lot of comfort and wisdom in Colby’s words.

One of my favorite quotes from the book is this:

“May we see faith as a posture of trust, a journey of transformation, and as a chasing of the light.” - Colby Martin

It seems like so many people view faith as having “arrived” at a specific destination; having staked their claim in a certain set of beliefs. Once you accept Jesus as your Lord and savior, you’ve made it. All that’s required afterwards to “keep the faith” is to attend church regularly and read your bible. Other than that, nothing changes.

And that’s the problem …

Every healthy, living thing on planet earth GROWS and CHANGES throughout its life.

If you’re not growing, changing, or transforming, then you’re DYING. Let that sink in.

What does growth and change and transformation look like in the realm of faith? Well, that’s different for everyone. But I can tell you that my faith has changed drastically over the past few years, and I’m not finished yet. My faith is sure to experience several more evolutions throughout my life, and this is something that Colby emphasizes in the book:

“ … I’m assuming the Colby a dozen years from now will likely cringe at parts of this book - because faith (as I’ll suggest) implies a dynamic evolving, not a static arriving.”

How do you grow and change in your faith? My advice is to read books like "The Shift". Read things and listen to people that have different experiences / thoughts / opinions than your own. And do so with an open heart and mind; without trying to defend your own beliefs. Read and listen to understand rather than to respond.

Keep learning, keep expanding. Keep asking questions. Keep wrestling with yourself - it’s all part of the process.

Embarking on a spiritual journey can be scary and uncomfortable, even painful at times. But it can also be exhilarating, liberating, and rewarding.

"The Shift" is a valuable resource for anyone on a spiritual journey. Colby writes in a way that holds space for everyone - no accusing, guilt-tripping, or shaming involved. Just a loving friend walking beside you on the voyage, offering love & support.

After being thrown out of multiple bible studies, made to feel unwelcome at churches, and told I need to change to be a child of God, I feel like I have finally found a spiritual home. I completely identified with the author’s perspective and am comforted to know I am not alone. I have read books and consumed a decent amount of media by conservative Christians, but this is the first book I’ve read by a progressive Christian. I think reading and learning from everyone is key to remaining open to the process of growth through deconstruction. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has been turned away from the church for being too loving, too open, or too accepting towards others. There is this one quote that I love and want to end the review with. This is a conversation I can so easily picture between Jesus and ordinary people, and it is how I imagine Jesus to be:

“Who do you say I am?” Jesus asks. We reply, “You are the human one, the loved child of God.” Jesus smiles and says, “And so are you. How great is that?”

This book is the most incredible ally to anyone navigating the endlessly complicated, sometimes painful, overwhelmingly beautiful transition from conservative to progressive faith. Colby’s voice is at once wise guide and approachable pal, and the definitions and analogies he offers are the deepest breath of relief. This is a book that will set people free.

Colby Martin is an intelligent and interesting author and pastor. I don't always agree with him, but I love how he makes me think about my faith. Foremost, I love how he reaches out to others who have been hurt in the name of faith and helps them resolve their hope. His vision of what church should be, with his eye on Jesus, undeniably resonates with Scripture-- welcoming, inviting, healing. Some of my favorite quotes from this selection: "Somewhere along the way, Christianity became less 'Love your neighbor as yourself' and more 'Make sure you believe the right things.'" (p. 29) and "We must do our absolute best to believe in one another's good intentions, and trust that we want the same things" (p. 185).

I cannot say enough about this book. Colby has taken a topic that can feel lonely and isolating and created something that made me feel seen and validated. His writing is personable and authentic with sudden profound (but not annoying) mic drops that kept me underlining throughout the whole book. Grab a copy. It is so worth it.

Unclobber by Colby Martin was one of the best books I’ve read on Christians and same-sex attraction so I was very excited when I heard about his new book, The Shift. Similar to Unclobber, Martin treats complex issues in The Shift in a way that is easy to understand and accessible. The book is quite an easy read, not because it lacks rigor or substance but because ideas are communicated clearly and succinctly in a conversational style. I was also glad to see that his new book was also filled with Martin’s trademark humor and pop culture references.
Each chapter of the book explores a facet of the transition from Evangelical or Fundamentalist Christian to a Progressive Christian. Martin discusses topics including changing views on authority of Scripture, what it means to believe in Jesus, and what God is like. I was reminded of my experience reading A New Kind of Christian by Brian McLaren nearly 20 years ago when I was just beginning my deconstruction process. McLaren put words to many of the questions I was struggling with at the time (along with some I didn’t know I had) and I think The Shift may do the same for people in a similar place today.
My main critique of The Shift is that Martin seems to create a framework of a linear journey from Evangelical to Progressive Christian. He provides a helpful definition of Progressive Christian and does not explicitly state that the journey is “point A to point B.” I tend to resist labels and don’t like being put into the “Progressive” category so maybe my critique is more about Martin than me. I’m not sure how else he could explore so many issues without some suggestion of linear movement from one point to another.
Overall, I think Martin’s book will be very helpful to anyone currently questioning or deconstructing their faith. Martin does not provide easy answers but he does give language to readers to help them go deeper into their questions.
Disclaimer: I was provided an advanced copy of The Shift for review purposes.

This book was exactly what I needed! It’s an easy read, relatable and completely applicable to someone who is trying to navigate these uncharted, complicated waters of shifting from Evangelical Christianity to a more Progressive Christian walk of faith. He lays out a good foundation and gives great tools for people who are beginning or traveling along this journey. This book has helped me tremendously and has really helped me know that I’m not alone in this shift. Highly recommend!

This book echos the hearts , minds and experiences of many of us who identify as Christian but have changed ( shifted) as people of faith.
This book covers the emotions of joy and grief that come with shifting your faith from conservative/ evangelical / traditional to Progressive Christian.
It names and explores the multiple layers of reclaiming your faith in a new way.
Worth the time to explore this book where ever you are on the faith journey

This is a much needed book! When one begin to question the beliefs held within the world of evangelical Christianity, it can be very scary. Learning to follow Christ, and not the church can also be very lonely. As I read this book, I felt as though each page was speaking to me, saying, "you are not alone.". So many things echoed with my thoughts and experiences...and helped me to rebuild my faith. I highly recommend this book!

Colby Martin has done it again in providing thought provoking material that meets the needs of Christians on their journey of faith. Colby gives permission and blessing for people to ask questions of about their faith and what they believe. This might be natural for Progressive Christians, and yet it is so significant and scary for people who have been told what to believe.

I highly recommend The Shift for ministers trying to understand the journey that their newly progressive members are going through. I highly recommend this book to those going through the journey as they figure out that God still loves them as they question and redefine what is their faith.

Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, this book has something for you. Colby addresses the issue of shifting from conservative to progressive Christianity with humor, grace, and understanding wrought from personal experience and the stories of others he's encountered. The stories, (and I have one of my own), vary as much and as widely as the many different people experiencing them. And that's the beauty of it... everyone has their own spiritual journey and relationship with God. For those who have traveled far to escape the sharp edges of cookie cutter religion, this book is a healing balm.

The Shift encourages us in our efforts to let go of fear and shame, while embracing our past as a path of stepping stones in our life experience. Colby affirms our doubts and questions as healthy expressions of our faith, showing how faith really is a verb - something we act out, not a thing that we possess.

The book covers a lot of important information, including ways to extend grace towards oneself and others. Chapter 11 alone is a great primer on effective communication in any situation.

My copy is full of highlights, and a favorite quote is: "As you construct a more progressive expression of your Christian faith, I propose you decide now that love - not religion, not holy books, not tradition - will be your compass." That's a place at which I'd already arrived before reading The Shift, and now I feel like I'm in good company! I hope and pray that other readers are as uplifted, encouraged, and seen as I have been.

This is a great book for one who has progressed in his journey of life as a Christian. For those who have had problems with conservatives in their Christian life, this writer reaches out with some very good stories and encouraging words.
Individuals do not have to follow guidelines and rule books that are laid down, not so much from the Bible but often from cultural expectations. The Bible often encourages one to explore and question things in life, does not have parameters as to love, mercy and justice, and in many instances, is offensive to some things about religion that carry new baggage.
The liberty to discover for oneself is what the author suggests as a welcoming message that carries love into life. For conservatives as well as progressives, he gives much to think about.
In this age of polarization, as Christians we need to follow I Cor. 13, which is that one may have all the right doctrine and do all the right things, but without love, it means nothing. This is why the Shift is so important to read and ponder on the implication for reaching out to others, what we believe and to see that often to love is to listen, discuss, reflect, meditate, and see how Jesus reaches out to anyone who desires to know more. Jesus is not afraid of our doubting, or our exploration even when we might not be correct, but since none of us are perfect while we live in the present life, yet He will bring us more and more to see the Jesus way.

It was ok...there wasn’t a lot of substance to each topic. Each chapter could have been summed up as “you can’t know anything for sure, there are no definitives, and you can just believe whatever you want to & makes you feel good.” I gave up little more than halfway through when I realized there wasn’t going to be much to actually take away from my time reading.

Colby Martin I would describe The Shift as a soft landing in Progressive Christianity. Author Colby Martin gently describes why people change their minds about faith and assures the reader that this change, or "shift" is acceptable. He asserts that it doesn't represent losing one's faith so much as it represents developing a more mature perspective of faith. In other words, when individuals "grow up" in their faith they're likely to see things differently. They are better able to integrate religious thinking, science, and psychology. They shift from a perspective that demands thinking the right things to a perspective that allows trust in the presence of ambiguity.

Colby works through the changes in perspective that Progressive Christianity poses to thinking about God, evaluating the historical Jesus, and handling Biblical interpretation. He then moves encouraging the reader toward feeling confident in their new perspective. A useful chapter is Chapter 10 - Shaking the Dust from Old Relationships: What to Do with Your Conservative (and "Concerned") Family and Friends.

When Colby quotes others he is careful to provide citations. One thing that I miss, however, is a "Works Referenced" section. I would like to know more about the authors that contributed to his own shift. I hear echos of Peter Enns, Rob Bell, Bishop John Shelby Spong, Marcus Borg, and possibly even John Dominic Crossan, but unless these individuals are quoted directly, they aren't referenced. (The absence of "Works Referenced" is perhaps his publisher's fault.)

For those interested in making the shift, this book is a good place to start. Then, based on your intellectual curiosity, follow it up with Kissing Fish: Christianity for People Who Don't Like Christianity by Roger Wolsey or Why Christianity Must Change or Die or Unbelievable: Why Neither Ancient Creeds Nor the Reformation Can Produce a Living Faith Today, both by Bishop John Shelby Spong.

Colby’s book The Shift is a breath of fresh air for someone like me who’s been in the "grey" of their faith for some time.

At one point, I (like many who go through "the shift") just wanted to wash my hands of Christianity altogether. It felt like if I pulled on the thread of my doubts for long enough, I would never be able to put my faith back together. But, around this time I found Colby's work, his church Sojourn Grace Collective and I saw a vision of a faith that CAN be reconstructed.

In this book, Colby shows us the way. He masterfully articulates the grief and relational challenges that come with The Shift, AND he illuminates hope and a path forward for progressive Christians.

If you feel like a “spiritual orphan” like I did, this book is for you. If you love someone who is shifting out of their faith, consider reading this and you’ll gain more insight into their perspective. If you want a guidebook to moving forward after the shift, get yourself a copy and you’ll find tools, hope and validation in the journey you’re on.

I was eager to read Colby Martin's book, " The Shift ", as his book "Unclobber" is one of my absolute favorites. I was not disappointed. "The Shift" speaks to those of us going through a faith shift with intelligence and compassion. So many of my thoughts and feelings are reflected in the words shared by the author. Great insights I had never thought about as well! Chapter 2 "Forsaking the Foundation of Certainty" has completed opened my eyes and given me greater understanding to the reaction I have experienced from my conservative friends and family as I move away from Conservative Christianity. This is a must read for anyone experience a faith shift towards Progressive Christianity. Great insight and food for thought!

This book is the exact one I’ve needed for such a long time. During my college years (as a Bible major at a conservative church of Christ university no less), I found myself moving from the conservative, human rules-bound, restrictive faith of my southern Baptist/ultra conservative upbringing. It was in part just my growing up and starting to more fully think for myself, but it was also due in large part to learning how to deeply read—and even translate from the original languages—the Bible on my own. It FREAKED my family out. I was told I was too liberal and thought too highly of myself since becoming educated and one parent even threatened to confront the dean of my college for making me so flippant about the Bible and Christianity. It was hard times, y’all. And sometimes it still is.

Here is where this book can help. In it, Colby helps us refocus on the truly important aspects of Christian faith: love and compassion. He brings it all back to the mission of Jesus and his love. I greatly appreciate the places he speaks to the anger, accusations, and questioning of faith others often throw at progressive Christians. It helped me know I’m not alone in dealing with this. But he doesn’t turn it into a pity party. Nope. He very lovingly helps us understand *why* many conservative Christians respond and act the ways they do. I can’t tell you how many “lightbulb moments” I had in those parts!! They helped me better understand my family (my sweet mama in particular) and to have more grace where she’s concerned. They also helped know better how to have faith conversations with her and others.

So if you’re like me, the lone sheep whose wandered from the conservative path, please read this book. It will help as you navigate the terrain and face the giants of conservative resistance.

I don’t typically read books more than once, but this is one I’ll read regularly. Full disclosure: I’ve already read it twice. :)

Colby Martin's first book, Unclobber, was a huge help for me as I am learning to challenge my old ways of viewing and interpreting Scripture. In The Shift, Martin's insight and perspective are again refreshing and relevant. He helps me see God and Jesus in a bigger, more global, and more loving way. He is encouraging to those of us looking for a new kind of Christian community who feel guilty (but excited!) about leaving the old ways behind. Martin challenges each of us to think and reason for ourselves and not to accept what he or any preacher teaches just because they are speaking from a pulpit. He is helping me be free to follow and serve Christ, which means loving everyone equally without judgement or reservation.

Perhaps Colby's book Unclobber began to change the way that you think about "church" and Christianity. Maybe the things you are hearing from the pulpit don't align with the things God has been whispering to your heart. It could be that you have dug deep into the living word of God and it has a whole new meaning to you. No matter how you got here, if you feel like your conservative church is no longer a safe place for you, this book will help navigate you through those thoughts and feelings. It will help you understand some of why you are feeling the way that you do. It will help you understand why the well meaning Conservative Christians in your life are struggling with the new you. This book will simply serve you well as you transition to a Progressive Christianity.

What a wonderful companion this book would be throughout the difficult journey of deconstruction and finding one’s way to a faith community again. What I would have given to have this with me when my own journey began over 15 years ago... affirming my struggles and helping me with the emotional vocabulary to navigate the process! No matter what place you now find yourself in and no matter what stage of your faith journey you are exploring, this book is a wonderful read. Colby makes you feel seen and understood, where so often we are made to feel “less-than” for our doubts and questions. Thankful for this book, and so glad I have it to share now with others who are searching.

The Shift is an honest, thought-provoking book that provides the reader with new perspectives, clarifying biblical-based information and tips for actualizing Christianity in a way that feels genuine. It made me realize how what I had been taught in a lifetime of "churching" didn't truly capture the essence of what Christ did or promoted during his time on Earth. I have a deep respect for Colby Martin and his willingness to be honest and authentic as he shared his own struggles. This is a must-read book because the content transcends even the purpose of the book, and can be used for day-to-day living on so many levels. I highly recommend anyone touting the banner of Christianity to read this book.

Colby Martin was able to put words to my feelings which is pretty amazing to say the least. It's written in a way that is extremely understandble and relatable. Thankful for the honesty and vulnerability. The way he describes God as a force that beckons made so much sense that my relationship with God has shifted and become deeper as a result. Highly recommend for those looking for a lighthouse on their journey.

This book echoes into the hearts and minds of those of us navigating the choppy waters as we shift toward a progressive faith. Colby’s writing is insightful, funny, and deep. I think this would be an especially useful read for those new to deconstruction and still struggling with the way it is shifting their theology and politics. I wish I had read this years ago.

I believe this book is worth the time and effort no matter if you call yourself a conservative or a liberal. Colby’s methods for navigating uncertain waters are spot on and a great reminder that beyond each of our belief systems are people and people are what truly matter.

While I may or may not agree with everything in the book it felt like I was sitting down having coffee with a friend each day. Great job Colby!

"It's hard out there..." Colby shares, then through his deep knowledge, understanding and love of others, he meets his goal of empowering his reader to thrive in their spiritual life.
Colby's insight brings "Christianity" back to the root of its meaning. His thoughtful approach brings the fullness of truth and humanity together. The book is an invitation to those who have walked away, to find themselves brought back to a redefined faith in action.

Colby Martin thoroughly understands the challenges of moving from a faith that has little room for questions or doubts to one that allows for the expansiveness of God to be recognized and celebrated. In my personal journey from a conservative faith that kept me confined to a narrow way of thinking that led to an understanding that God limited who was in and who was out of His sphere, this book provided affirmation that the restrictive path that I traveled for many years does have thruways that liberate me from that judgmental thinking. He recognizes the challenges for those of us charting a new path who have spent years bound by the limited interpretations of the Bible that required certainty. Since Colby lived through this himself, he knows the struggle is real and he helps us find ways to acknowledge our fears, deal with the self doubt and suggests how to move forward with confidence and love for those in our past and present.
If you are wondering why the faith of your youth doesn't fit your present reality, want to know more about how to navigate the move from a faith that no longer makes sense in light of science and history and you feel strongly that God truly excludes no one in His paradigm of love, read THE SHIFT. It will allay your fears, give you peace and encourage your soul.

“…. Because faith implies a dynamic evolving, not a static arriving.”

“If more churches saw their purpose this way - revealers of the Divine rather the keepers or distributors of it - we’d witness a reversal of the current exodus from most faith communities.”

There were so many good points in this one. I highlighted a bunch in my book and plan on revisiting again.
