This title uncovers the best places for you to move to, from French-speaking Quebec to Vancouver. It gives specialist advice on dealing with all the red tape, from gaining visas and work permits to buying a property and moving in. It guides you through the settling in process, from education and healthcare to cellular phone services and banking. It puts Canada into context with details on its political, economic and religious situation, and social behavior. It helps with the challenges of finding a job, both working for other people and setting up your own business.
This is a solid book looking at Canada, both its history and present. Despite mainly being a guide to help people who want to work or live in Canada, it does a good job of telling you the political and social history of Canada, the story of its individual provinces and cities, and a whole lot besides. I was reading it out of general interest, so the latter chunk of the book which actually covered the nuts and bolts of living and working was of little interest to me, but obviously great for people who are planning that. The only negative? The book was published in 2008, and obviously a lot of the more ‘modern’ material, including advice, is completely out of date. Do bear that in mind. An enjoyable and informative read.
