But settling on the island has its complications, and with the fiancé she left behind questioning every choice she makes, Quinn’s quest for her truth is even more difficult than she expected. One thing I absolutely love with reading is finding amazing settings in stories and getting a bit of “virtual” travel while I read. With finding True to Me by Kay Bratt takes place in Hawaii I immediately had to grab this contemporary romance and thankfully the story was a lovely as the setting.

Quinn Maguire had spent her life being raised by a single mother thinking that her father had left as a child but when her mother is about to pass away she admits to lying about who Quinn’s father was. Despite being engaged Quinn decides she really wants to learn her real father was and finds evidence he might be in Hawaii where her mother was raised.

The author did a wonderful job bringing the setting of Hawaii to life in this story even including the culture and people into the mystery of who Quinn’s father might be. While this is more on the side of a contemporary read it does have a pretty solid mystery involved in it too with Quinn looking into her past which made this one a definite page turner. With likable characters, a great setting and fun plot this one is one I’d recommend checking out.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

Are you fairly good about setting boundaries for yourself?

Can you say ‘no’ and stick to it ~ even when it’s someone you love?

I’m thankful for parents and others who helped me form a positive image of myself and foster the strength to live with boundaries, the ability to know when they’ve been breached and the foresight to reestablish them once they’ve been broken. That doesn’t mean that I’ve had situations where I’ve temporarily allowed others to shape me in the image of how they think I should be…but as I’ve aged, I’ve found it easier to be true to myself.

Come immerse yourself in the beauty of Maui and the complicated strands of building a family, keeping secrets, forgiveness, and finding oneself. Quinn Maguire has her future mapped out until her mother’s deathbed confession. Six little words turn Quinn’s world upside down. In Hawaii, ohana is everything so this confession and the reality of it must have been unbearable for the now orphaned Quinn. Her search for the truth and her commitment to be true to herself held me spellbound.

When Quinn and Maria meet and discover that they are both weighted down with a mystery, they see each other in a different light and despite being on different paths in life, they come together to support each other. When we can see ourselves in another, it does something to our outlook and how we treat them, doesn’t it?

“I finally learned that revenge tastes bitter. Forgiveness is a much sweeter way to live.”

This search for the truth was one of the best holiday reads of this past week. I binge-read this book on the Lido deck this afternoon. I felt the pull of the islands both between the pages of this wonderful book and in the warm tradewinds on the open decks as we sail towards Hawaii.

I slowed my reading and smiled as I read about ‘talk story’, ‘coconut wireless’, ‘living pono’, ‘ho’oponopono’, and ‘aumakua’.

Highly recommended

"Aloha......Most mainlanders were under the impression that aloha was the word used for both "hello" and "goodbye". But the article stated it was much more, that aloha meant "love," "peace," and "compassion." More than a word, a life of aloha meant the heart was overflowing, and when using it, one should be sincerely happy to see the person they said it to." This passage from the book spoke to me. It's how I feel when I am going to pick up one of Kay Bratt's novels. My heart is happy and overflowing.

True to Me is another GREAT read written by the talented and amazing Kay Bratt. She has such a gift of bringing the reader on an emotional journey and adventure with her characters. In this book, the journey is with the character of Quinn Maguire. The story starts out with her mother's death bed confession that rocks Quinn's world. This revelation had me shocked right along with Quinn.

Quinn has been raised by a very loving mother who gave her a great childhood and losing her is such a tragic loss. Her mother's last wishes were to be taken back to her homeland of Maui, Hawaii and have her ashes scattered there. Quinn has always been a bit self insecure but she decides she needs to do this without her longtime boyfriend, Ethan. The journey of self discovery and who the person Quinn is begins at this point. Not only who she is but who her family is. I was fascinated by how DNA lineage was written into the plot. How it was used to solve the mystery of Quinn's family and who they were. Ms. Bratt took me into an emotional adventure in the pages of this book. I loved the characters and how they connected with each other. Even the not-so-likable Ethan. He is part of who Quinn became in the end. I met amazing characters who blended together and I became attached to them.

Kay Bratt writes stories from her heart. I become a part of them as I'm reading them. Quinn's story is no different. Quinn's story is one of finding herself and who she is. The unbelievable events in her life that take her to become who she is meant to be had me captivated. The setting in the book was picture perfect by the descriptive writing talent of Ms. Bratt. I have never been to Hawaii but I sure have been on a virtual visit with Quinn and her close friend, Liam. I experienced the different traditions, customs and ceremonial events. I felt the time honoring reverence of them. It all came together to Quinn being true to herself.

I am very grateful for the opportunity of reading this novel. Kay Bratt brings it every time with her heart and emotions that pour out on the pages. I love this book and whether I'm saying "Aloha" at the beginning or "Aloha" at the end, it's a fantastic read in between.

I want to thank Netgalley and Kay Bratt for my advanced review copy of this book. All opinions and thoughts are my heartfelt own.

I was first drawn to this book because of the cover when I saw it on NetGalley and then I saw all the four and five star reviews, I decided to read it. I am glad that I did.
Quinn Maguire's family has consisted of just her mother and herself her whole life. When her mother died of cancer, she was heartbroken. Before her death, her mom told her that the deadbeat dad that she can't remember was not actually her father. She asked that Quinn return her ashes to Hawaii where she and Quinn are from. In an unusual move, Quinn decides to buy a house in Hawaii when her mom leaves her a small inheritance against her controlling fiance's insistence. Thinking she could fix it up and rent it out, it would be an investment. Quinn felt strongly that she needed to find out if she had family in Hawaii and wanted some space alone to do the exploring. She encountered lots of obstacles when she arrived at her sight unseen home purchase, in the form of a family living in the house. That was just the start of the course her life took trying to find her roots. Quinn finds herself at crossroads in her life on many levels and hers is an emotional journey that she is on alone. Out of desperation, she reaches out to an old friend who comes through to help her walk through everything but she is in for some hard facts to face. This is a great read that pulls you in and holds you in to the end. Quinn is someone that you feel her pain and will cheer on.

5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. As a lover of anything Hawaii related I have to say I was super excited to be able to read this book before it’s official publish date. I’ve been to Maui 4 times and it’s truly my favorite place in the world. It so magical that once you’ve been on the island, it’s almost like you’ve left a piece of yourself there when it’s time to go back home. But getting back to the book...I have all great things to say about it. I love the author’s style of writing. The chapters flow so nicely and she has a wonderful way of making you feel connected to all of the characters. And I honestly did LOVE all the characters in this book especially Quinn, Liam, Kupuna and Maggie. I don’t want to give away any spoilers but I will say that I hope to see more of Liam in the sequel. There was a big shocker at the end of the book that I did not see coming at all. I love the bonds Quinn formed when she was in Maui trying to find out about her family. And I also liked the way the story all came together in the end. Also after being in Maui so many times I can honestly say that the author did a wonderful job in describing the beauty of the island. She took me back to many of the places that I‘ve been blessed to see.

My favorite line in the book was “But the article stated it was much more, that aloha meant “love,” “peace,” and “compassion.” More than a word, a life of aloha meant the heart was overflowing, and when using it, one should be sincerely happy to see the person they said it to”.

This is not my first book by Kay Bratt and it will definitely not be my last. I highly recommend True To Me and I look forward to reading many more books by this author.

Thank you to Net Galley for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.

When Quinn's mother whispers a long held secret to her on her deathbed it sends her ordinary life into a tail spin. A secret that sends her on a journey to Hawaii. This was a moving story and the descriptions of the island and the surroundings were just magical. I loved learning about the culture and traditions. This was such an emotional journey along with the character. This is my first time reading this author and I was completely captivated by the writing and the story. It amazed me. A discovery of heritage. This is brilliant story telling.

TRUE TO ME by Kay Bratt is a beautifully-written and emotional story of family, forgiveness and second chances. On her deathbed, Quinn’s mother drops a bombshell confession with no further explanation that throws into question everything Quinn knows of her mother and her whole upbringing. Determined to uncover the truth about her mother’s past and learn more about her own history, Quinn travels to Maui, her mother’s childhood home to scatter her Mom’s ashes and explore what little she has heard about her mother’s past. Shown unexpected kindness from a family on the island, Quinn learns the deeper meaning of family, friendship, sacrifice and forgiveness. There is also a romantic element that plays a subtle role in the storyline. The descriptions of the scenery of Maui, the lifestyle and the traditions dating back to ancient times are beautiful. I was completely immersed in Quinn’s journey of reflection, self-discovery and acceptance. I loved this heartfelt and uplifting book and so look forward to what comes next from Kay Bratt. Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the chance to read an early copy.

Thank you to the author for this ARC.

I really enjoyed this book especially since it was set in the location of Maui, HI.

It was a easy read but emotional as well.

Quinn's mother surprised her on her death bed by telling her that for all of her life that her father wasn't her father. She buys a home on a whim in Maui, unseen, to look for her real father and finds out that the family who owns the house still lives there and hope they will move out soon. She moves into the guest house, unwillingly, and starts to renovate the house and becomes friends with the family who lives there now and meets Liam, who helps her renovate the house the way she wants it after the family moves out who I think she falls in love with, but will not admit it. She already has a fiancee who she's been engaged to for 10 years. She finds a lot more than who her father was and who she really is and real family is after all, sort of a complicated story in itself.

Well, this story hit very close to home for me. As I started reading it, I went through many emotions, one of which was if I could get through reading it. I did continue reading it, am glad I did as it is a very intriguing story.
A truly heartwarming story about family secrets, finding oneself and most of all, how to forgive.
I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

True to Me by Kay Bratt, book one in her By the Sea series, is the first book I’ve devoured this quickly since the pandemic. I realize, after trial and error, that I’m no longer an avid reader of print or digital books. Listening to True to Me in audible was an exceptional experience. It was the perfect book to get me out of my reading/listening funk.

Please help me revive my blog, TheZestQuest.com, by visiting and leaving some comments. I hope to get back to all my favorite subjects - this is just the first one, so feel free to hop around past posts as well. Thanks in advance for your attentiveness!

Why was this book in my TBR? I had stacked up numerous audible credits over the last year, struggling to find something I wanted to read/listen to. This book came across my audible suggestions feed. After realizing it was the start of a series, and by a favorite author, I hit the ‘buy with credits’ button very quickly in January 2023. It had been on my wish list since it published in December 2019. It suited our Getaway topic perfectly for the 2023 TBR (to be read) Challenge, taking place in Maui where I’ve always wanted to explore.

A complicated story of grief and deception in its rawest form, True to Me wasn’t as sad as it might sound. Joy, self-discovery, personal-growth, and healing for a wide range of characters made this book a mostly joyful experience. Great character developments make them so real that you just have to release some emotion during their journey.

The main character, Quinn, starts off as a woman lacking confidence due to a controlling relationship. Her growth as she learns the truth about herself, her family, and her fiancé is very well done. As someone who experienced growth after mental abuse, I can say I felt very well-connected to Quinn’s journey.

That said, I admit frustration with her lack of self worth at times, as well as being a bit whimpy, but I was pleased with her growth by the end. Quinn becomes someone I admire, not only by her sense of self-worth, but her good sense on how she paces her future.

I loved all the twists and turns. There were some great surprises and that’s why I classify this as a mystery as well as contemporary fiction with romance elements. Anyone who loves the chase of genealogy should particularly enjoy this story.

True to Me is very much a rich love story, but not a romance in the traditional sense. It is an engaging happy-for-now, with room for happy-ever-after predictions. And, there were several examples of love in all its different forms, so this becomes a feel-good book in the midst of all its emotion. For those who like a clean romance, this one should satisfy.

I cried several times due to the raw emotion of several characters, including tears of joy. I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs a getaway from the norm, in a paradise immersed in the traditions of Maui. True to Me is high on my list of favorite books. Kay Bratt remains one of my favorite authors for a great getaway. Sarah Mollo-Christensen is a believable narrator who is easy to listen to and I enjoyed her acting. Put this one on your pile, or any of Kay Bratt’s novels. I’ve enjoyed several.

A note for TBR Challenge members – yes, I’m trying to get back at it this year. Last year I read a book a month for the challenge, but never posted a review. I hope to make old habits a new reality this year. Feels good to be back. 🙂

Since this is the first book that I have read by Kay Bratt, I didn’t know what to expect, but I must say I was blown away with her ability to paint a picture with words and to draw me into the story quickly. Quinn’s mother whispers a long-held secret on her deathbed, sending Quinn on a quest to discover her heritage. Her search takes her to the island of Maui, where she meets Liam, her guide who becomes her friend and helper in her quest. This is a magical look at one woman’s search for her ancestry and her discovery of so much more. The words used to describe the island of Maui and its people took me on a virtual journey there because they were all so alive and full of color. It was obvious from the descriptions that the author didn’t just research for this novel, but she traveled there and shared part of her heart for the place with her readers. Filled with a history of the culture and traditions of Hawaii, this book is to be read and enjoyed by anyone who likes women’s fiction and romance. The captivating story took me to places I have never been and showed me those places through the eyes of a woman named Quinn, someone who was trying to discover her past but found her future, also. I loved this book and highly recommend it!

I was immediately drawn to this book because of the beautiful cover. After reading the blurb I knew this was a must read.

Quinn Maguire has always done the right thing. When her mother passes away it turns her world upside down in search for answers.
Determined to do the right thing Quinn travels to Maui and encounters a few hiccups she never saw coming. Will she be able to find the answers she's looking for?

To say I loved this book would be a big understatement. I found this book to have a genuine and authentic feel, realistic and relatable characters, and unexpected plot twist and a perfect ending. I highly recommend this five star read.

Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to express my own honest opinion of this story.

I started True To Me ready to take it with a massive grain of salt. This genre of book is absolutely the opposite of what I tend to gravitate towards, therefore it was important to me to try to keep an open mind when I began reading.

Despite being somebody who normally only enjoys non-fiction and memoirs, the state of the world and some recent reads had me feeling emotionally drained. I craved a novel that was carefree and optimistic. When I looked into True To Me, I was intrigued by the story. A woman learns to find happiness and build relationships in the beautiful setting of Maui. After being locked inside since February, I figured if I can’t visit Hawaii then living vicariously through Quinn was second best.

The book started off exactly how I expected it - a near carbon copy of a typical Hallmark movie. A successful yet self-conscious workaholic protagonist, a comically terrible and uncaring fiancé, a moral dilemma that puts the protagonist in a predicament, a handsome stranger placed into the protagonist’s daily life, a kind family complete with a moody teenager and sweet little girl, events that result in the protagonist letting down her hair and living life to the fullest, etc.

I can’t criticize this formula. It is exactly what I came in expecting - I wanted something like this, lighthearted and full of hope. To be completely honest, I was truly enjoying the first half of the book.

But once True To Me hit its climax I found the remaining storyline to be downright silly. While the twist in the story was not necessarily something we have never seen before, the reasoning behind it happening made me roll my eyes over how absolutely ridiculous it was. The rationale seemed childish and almost like too much of a stretch. Mix this with the completely odd, unnatural way the characters conversed with one another throughout the novel and I found myself ready for it to all be over.

I enjoyed some aspects of True To Me - particularly the in depth description of Maui, the education over Hawaiian beliefs and customs, and Quinn’s time discovering her own happiness and independence. However, the book managed to go off the rails when it came to its plot twist and many times I found the drawn out, overly descriptive way the characters spoke to one another to feel pretty ridiculous and unnatural.

I have been a long-time fan of Kay Bratt and was excited to find out that she had a new book. And...in my opinion, it was her best book yet. The characters are well written, the plot has some mystery and some romance and the Hawaiian setting made me want to buy an airline ticket and visit Hawaii.

Quinn and her mom were close and there were no other family members, just the two of them. Quinn's dad left years earlier and she had no memory of him. She lives with and is engaged to a very dominant man who thinks that he can control her life. When Quinn's mom was dying, she told Quinn that her real father was not who she's always been told he was. Those were her dying words and at her death Quinn not only has to deal with her grief but also with the mystery of who her father really was. Her mother had requested that her ashes be scattered in Maui so that is where Quinn decided that she's start her search for her father there.

This is a beautiful book about love and friendship and the discovery of not only the past but the discovery of learning who you really are and what you want in your future.

Thanks to the author for a copy of this book to read and review. All opinions are my own.

True to Me blew me away! I loved this story of Quinn as she discovered the lies and truths of the life she had been content to live. Her world is rocked to the core when her mother reveals a secret on her deathbed. Quinn travels to Maui, where it all began, to find out the truth. Quinn finds some wonderful people in her quest for answers and maybe, just maybe, she will find out what really makes her happy.

And how can a story be anything but fantastic when the setting is a beautiful island in Hawaii? Kay's descriptions of the area made me feel like I was there. It was heavenly!

True to Me is an amazing story that I devoured and enjoyed so much! This author's story just keep getting better and better and I'm always excited to read her books.

Amazing Tale. This was one of those tales that was so rich that the author could spend the rest of her career writing within this world and I'm pretty sure no one would be disappointed. The tale here of finding oneself and the large amounts of forgiveness that sometimes requires is palpable and tragic - but ultimately the feel good story one expects from this particular author. Just as with her previous book, this one yet again feels like it was written specifically to one of her daughters and indeed she has spoken publicly of it being inspired by a trip to see this particular daughter... in Maui. Truly a remarkable work, and very much recommended.

This book was a fun read! Like a summer day beach novel sorta feel, ya know? Basically Quinn finds out that her dad isn't really her dad when her mom tells her just before she passes. So the adventure begins: She's off to Maui to spread her mother's ashes, and ends up learning quite a bit about her family roots along the way. There were ups n downs n all arounds but I won't spoil anything for you, go and read it for yourself 😜

This was a great summer read. It’s set in Maui, Hawaii! The author does a great job describing the picturesque setting - makes me want to travel! The main character goes through a lot of life changes and comes out much stronger at the end of the book. The culture and the emphasis on family made this a fun read.

You had me at Maui and genealogy. My favorite place and the study I find fascinating. This book sucks you in at the beginning and holds you until the end. Just unbelievable enough to be totally believable.

Quinn and her mother are very close. But, on her mother’s deathbed, Quinn is told something that rocks her world; the story she has been told all along about her father is a lie. This starts a mystery Quinn needs to unravel herself. This starts her impulsive decision to buy a house, site unseen, and fly to Maui, a place very special to her mom. From here, the story unfolds with many heartbreaking twists.

This was my first book by Ms. Bratt, and I look forward to reading more. Her writing and storylines flow effortlessly and she brings her characters to life, with all their flaws and strengths. She describes the beauty of Maui perfectly, making you feel like you are there. Aloha!

Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC. Opinion is mine alone.

Another beautiful book by Kay Bratt. Her books leave you breathless and with tears in your eyes. Both tears of sadness and joy. Heartache and happiness. Such emotions make her books some of the best I’ve ever read. Through in a laugh or two and you have a wonderful, heartfelt, touching, loving, story.

Ohana, means family. All Quinn wanted was a big family. Sisters and brothers. A dad who was there for her. What she had was a mother who would do anything for her. Anything to keep her safe. She loved her unconditionally and with every part of her. On her death bed she made a confession to Quinn that would change everything that she thought she knew about her and her mother.

Quinn goes to Maui to take her mother’s ashes home. That was her mother’s wish and being the kind of person she was Quinn was determined to grant her mother’s last wishes. Little did she know that her life was going to make a dramatic turn. Changes were coming for her that she would have never believed. She was leaving behind a life she thought at the time was what she wanted. Engaged to a man she thought she loved so much and would do anything for. In Maui she found her true self. Her strengths. She met people who changed her life in ways she never would have dreamed of. Sounds a bit like paradise to me in many ways.

This story is told in a way that you truly feel like you are there. The beauty of the water. The paths through the woods. The buildings and the house that changed Quinn in many ways. The family that lived in the house that is. She found so much that she never realized was missing and more. They all became family to her. This is a story of a love so deep and moving that it will take your breath away. The love of strangers and family and a best friend. Unconditional love. The only true kind.

This story made me have lots of ugly crying tears. Not all in a bad way either. The joys and happiness. The ups and downs. The breakups and losses. Family can be such a beautiful thing and it’s not just blood that makes a family. It’s in your heart.

Kay Bratt has a way with words that will have you reeling from chapter to chapter. From one thing to the next. Her books always leave me feeling full. I can’t wait for the next book now to see who we meet and who comes together. Yes, Ohana means family. A huge big family that were strangers just a few days before.

I loved this book from the first word to the very last. It pulled me in and pulled at my heart. It kept me turning the pages to see what would happen next. The characters were so likable and you will feel like they are old friends. With the exception of the fiancé, Ethan. I didn’t like him at all. Nothing about him. But all the rest were so loving and kind and felt like family and old friends.

Thank you to #NetGalley, Lake Union and Kay Bratt for this ARC. This is my own review and is from my heart.

I give this one 5 stars and a high high recommendation.. A must read.

Kay Bratt, author of "True to Me" has written an intriguing, captivating, emotional and magical novel. The story takes place mostly on Maui, and the timeline for the story is set in the present and goes to the past when it pertains to the characters or the events. The Genres for this novel are Fiction, Women's Fiction, Romance, and a touch of Magic. The author describes the characters as mostly likable, complex and complicated.

The main themes in this novel are family secrets, forgiveness, and second chances. I also appreciate that the author discusses the importance of family, friends, neighbors, love, and hope.

Quinn Maguire finds out on her mother's death bed, that the man she thought was her father that abandoned her wasn't. Quinn also has her mother's ashes and is bringing them to Maui, where her mother's childhood home was. Quinn is hoping that she can uncover secrets and discover the truth about her life.  On the island, Quinn starts to feel the magic and meets interesting people. Is it possible that Quinn will learn who she really is?

I would highly recommend this entertaining and thought-provoking and emotional novel.

This was a wonderful book to end the year! Quinn’s journey is heartfelt and inspiring. A vast knowledge of Hawaiian culture is displayed by the author. She does an amazing job of capturing the importance of ohana, pono and other aspects which brought back fond memories. I loved the little twists that complicated Quinn’s search while also enhancing her understanding of her situation (don’t want to give too much away). True to Me is the first book I have read by author Kay Bratt. This was such a heartwarming story of forgiveness, secrets that had been kept for years and a young woman’s journey in finding out who she really is.
Once I sat down to read I didn’t put the book down until the very end.
I found myself totally engrossed in the story and the descriptions of Maui had me seeing the beauty of the island.
Loved the book!

Thank you NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for the opportunity to read this book.
