Cowboy, Cross My Heart is book two in the Heart of Texas series by Donna Grant. It has been twelve years since the first book, The Christmas Cowboy Hero, where we met Abby Harper and Clayton East. Her brothers, Caleb and Brice are all grown up now. And this is Brice’s story.

Brice Harper and his brother Caleb are participating in the team roping competition at the rodeo. He first spotted her in the stands behind her camera. She stood out in the crowd like a light was illuminating just her in the sea of faces. Then later, as he was walking through the rodeo, it was her laughter that drew his attention. When he saw a man attacking two women, he didn’t think twice about running to their aid. He quickly realized that one of the women was the very same one he had noticed earlier. It seemed he was destined to be put in this woman’s path today.

female photographer

Naomi Pierce had left Texas for Washington, D.C. for college and then just stayed to begin her career in photography. Now she is back home visiting her mom and her best friend, Whitney. Whitney is reigning Rodeo Queen and is hoping the title will help her to progress through bigger pageants and open doors for bigger opportunities. As Whitney and Naomi are walking, it becomes apparent that Whitney is nervous. When they are attacked, it’s the handsome cowboy Naomi saw in the ring earlier that comes to their defense.

carrying the flag in a rodeo

It’s obvious that Whitney knows more about their attacker than she is letting on but she is not talking. Something is going on and Naomi is determined to figure out what it is. This isn’t the Whitney she left behind. That Whitney was a fighter. Something has happened to her friend and Naomi won’t rest until she’s able to figure it out.

“Her beauty might have caught his attention, but it was her strength, steadfastness, heart, and authenticity that kept pulling him back to her.”

Naomi and Brice find themselves thrown into a mystery that proves to be dangerous for not only them but their families. His brother, Abby and Clayton, and his two closest friends jump right in to help them and to keep everyone safe. Whitney has given them a few details but not the most important, the identity of the bad guys. At the same time, the connection between Naomi and Brice grows stronger. Brice has never felt so protective of any woman before and Naomi feels safe with him. Being back home and being with Brice is making her re-evaluate her life in D.C. Being back around the horses, being back with her closest friend, and the growing bond between she and Brice all together are making her think that perhaps it’s time to come home.

woman kissing a cowboy

Okay, first, I want to say that as far as the dangerous part of this story goes, these were some very, very bad men. I loved the way that Brice’s family came together with no hesitation to help. And seeing Abby and Clayton again and getting to see how their life turned out from the first book was amazing. I loved the first book so much. For some reason, though, I just couldn’t find that same connection this time. I did enjoy Brice and Naomi. I just didn’t get any real emotional pull for them. To be honest, the character that stood out the most was their crazy friend, Jace. He was so hilarious. I also admit I know nothing about rodeo pageants. These women most certainly take it seriously but in this case, I couldn’t accept the price they were willing to pay for their success. So while the danger was intense and I loved the family closeness, the romance didn’t really stand out like I wished it would with this book. Still, I enjoyed it.

Cowboy, Cross my Heart was a cute insta-love, sexy cowboy read. The second book in the Heart of Texas series, Cowboy, Cross my Heart can be read as a stand alone. When it comes to insta-love stories they are normally a hit or miss for me. This one was a hit but it felt a bit rushed. What I mean is that it worked for me because I felt a strong connection between Brice and Naomi, but I felt their relationship went from meeting to moving in together in like a few day span. Which made it feel a little to fast. Still They were cute together. Brice was a sexy texan cowboy. He had sweet southern manners and was so protective of Naomi. I loved not only Brice but I adored his brother Caleb too. Naomi was smart, and sweet, and honest. I love that she was so supportive and protective of her best friend. The plot was really really good. I loved that there was a ton of action in this read. Overall a very enjoyable read.

Cowboy, Cross My Heart by Donna Grant is the second book in the contemporary romance Heart of Texas series. This second book has switched the main characters in the story so it really could be read as a standalone. However, for those that have read the first book the characters do carry over into this story so you get to see where they are now.

Naomi Pierce grew up in TX but moved away for college and stayed away to get her career started as a photographer but now she’s returned home for a visit. While Naomi is attending the rodeo to support her best friend she gets the feeling that something is bothering her and as the pair stroll around visiting the animal stalls a man jumps out and attacks.

Brice Harper is a local cowboy that had been in the rodeo and is packing up to head home when he hears a scream nearby. Rushing off to help Brice comes across Naomi as she is struggling with the man that attacked so of course Brice jumps in and runs the man off. Brice and Naomi have chemistry from the start but when they find themselves in danger Brice vows to do whatever he can to protect both ladies and help find who is behind it.

Having read both books in this series I can honestly say I’m quite the fan. These really border closely on romantic suspense as there’s definitely a lot of action and danger involved as opposed to two people just meeting and falling in love. I would warn though that this is a rather fast paced relationship build while in the face of danger so those that prefer a more slow build may be disappointed but with sexy cowboys saving the day in the face of danger I’ll definitely be back for more in the next installment.

Maybe Security Guards instead of Chaperones…

I have never watched Dallas but this book read like I would imagine an episode of Dallas would be like. Girls with caked on makeup, boys strutting their stuff in tight jeans and cowboy boots and baddies making squinty-eyed threats. I was also picturing a few ‘80’s cop shows too. There were a few scenes where, with a gun in hand, they were ducking around corners, leading with a gun out the doorway and throwing themselves on the ground with the gun pointed at the baddies. I swear I could hear the Dallas and Hill Street Blues theme songs playing in the background.

Thinking of the '80's, and picturing it set in the '80's made the book a wee bit entertaining for me. I will admit, there were no ball gowns worn in Cowboy Cross My Heart. So, if you were heading to Amazon thinking you’ll get descriptions of silk and taffeta, you’ll be sadly disappointed. Mind you, there was a tiara mentioned…so maybe that would satisfy.

It wasn’t just Dallas and cop shows that made me think about the ‘80’s. It all just felt like a step back in time. The young ladies who were entrants in the Rodeo Pageant were expected to be beautifully presented, virtuous, polite and well behaved. Chaperones were appointed so that they could keep their pure image. Considering what these poor ladies went through, I think Security Guards would have been more appropriate. To be honest, I was a little gobsmacked that this could even be happening in this day and age. It just seemed a little outdated and a wee bit sexist.

The humdinger that had me thinking Dallas, Hill Street Blues…or maybe even Murder She Wrote, was the dodgy people in power taking advantage of their positions and influence. The police force, local paper, hospital and mayor’s office, all had a touch of the crooked in them. These men had the power to hide their misdeeds and cover up their indiscretions. It made my skin crawl as to what they got away with. Dirty old buggers.

Is it crazy of me to look to the police force to catch the bad guys? There seems to be an extreme number of ex-military vigilantes in the romance world. I just can’t picture myself relying on a friend who’s ex-military over a friend who’s currently serving in the police force, to save me. Sure, Danny, the sheriff had a role but it was more of the…we’ve caught him, now take him away…kind of thing.

The love story is super sweet and very, very quick pretty much insta love.. I think we reached *I LOVE YOU* in a couple of days. Sure, your heart beats double time when you’re in danger, but I would at least wait a couple of weeks after the danger passes before considering LOVE is here to stay. Oh my lordy the first sexy scene had me busting out laughing as it seemed a little weird and out of place for their first time together.

I actually liked Cowboy Cross My Heart but I didn’t love it. There’s a mystery to be solved, family drama to be worked through, friends to protect and love to be found. All the things to enjoy in a good cowboy romance. I think I should cut my ties with the small town, cowboy romance, it just doesn’t seem realistic to me. Maybe I’ve spent too many years living close to the city? Don’t judge by my review alone, check out some other reviews and you may find that Cowboy Cross My Heart would be perfect for you.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This author is new to me and the story had promise and I was engaged, however, I found myself disconnected to the characters at times and I'm not sure if it is due to the many characters or that the plot needed more. Suffice it to say, it was a good story with strong themes but needed a little more.

The story centers around Naomi who is back home for a short stint and she is meeting with her best friend who is also a rodeo queen. Her friend, Whitney, is committed to the role and responsibilities, but she has a secret, and Naomi gets a hint of it on her first day of their reunion. The two are attacked but soon rescued by rodeo champ, Brice, who happened to notice Naomi early on. Both are not seriously hurt, but rattled, but Naomi and Brice suspect they were targeted, but Whitney won't tell.

Brice and his brother and their friends and family are determined to keep them safe as Whitney's secret is revealed and they discover through other mysterious events that time is running out for them. Brice and Naomi are a team with their investigation and are drawn together by their undeniable chemestry. While the ending was predictable, it still had the ability to draw you in.

I liked the pace, it was easy breezy and a quick read....enjoy!!

0.5 - "Men in positions of power." Star.

DNF @ 45%

I always try to keep my reviews respectful when criticizing an author, and I highly respect Donna Grant, but I am struggling here, I just don’t understand how any author can feel it’s okay about to take a highly publicized sex, harassment and abuse scandal that has come to light only recently after being covered up for years, involving a well known figure in the entertainment industry, and use it as the basis for a plot bunny, playing out around the one of the weakest romantic coming togethers of a couple I have read in a long time.

"There have to be others who know what’s going on. No one said anything."

By the time I stopped Bryce and Naomi have know each other approximately 48 hours, and have probably spent a grand total of about 3-4 hours together, mainly in the company of others in that time. Their attraction secondary to what I saw as the main story being told around suspicious goings in with the Rodeo queens, the pageants they take part in and the chaperones who are meant to protect them, keep them out of trouble and away from mischief. Whitney; Naomi’s best friend is one such Rodeo darling and has apparently spent the last four years being assaulted, harassed and abused, and has done nothing about it because it’s apparently the norm, a lot of the other Pageant contestants suffer the same thing, and it’s worth it for all of the opportunities a Rodeo Queen is afforded when they win big.

To add to the mix we also get the POV of one of the Men in power while he has a meeting with five or six of his cronies, he gives a nice breakdown on what each of his friends like to do with the women whether by force, coercion or any other means necessary, and then muses that he isn’t too sure what his own proclivity quite is yet, all the while his wife and children are in the next room…

"I don’t regret anything we’ve done… I just don’t want it all to fall apart either. We’ve got a good thing here…"

That’s me out I’m afraid. I could go on, but I just want to forget what I have read. As always this is just my opinion, I am going to draw a line under it, take a shower to wash off the dirt, and go find something with bunnies, ponies and rainbows in it to hopefully wash my mind clean as well.

This is not your average cowboy romance. You got 3 cowboys with military training and a town with some very corrupt and sick individuals in place of power, who have been sexually assaulting the rodeo pageant women for years. It all comes crumbling down when Naomi comes home to visit her best friend and current rodeo queen, Whitney and discovers she's being stalked. Trying to get Whitney to talk has put both these women in danger as well as the men who try to save them.

Talk about suspenseful! I spent the whole book trying to figure out who was behind all these assaults, as well as trying to figure out why a strong woman like Whitney wouldn't out these men. It was disgusting how many people were involved with helping these men get away with hurting all these women. On top of that, you have a secondary story line of Brice and Naomi's growing attraction to each other as Brice and his family try to keep these women safe and uncover the identity of the attackers.

With everything going on, this made for a pretty fast paced read. I enjoyed the suspense as well as Brice and Naomi's budding relationship. I didn't enjoying hearing the thoughts of the men and what they have done. Thankfully the author kept that part to a minimum. It was nice seeing Abby and Clayton again and I look forward to Caleb's story. ARC provided by NetGalley.

I thought I was getting a cowboy romance and it ended up being much more than I anticipated. Cowboy, Cross My Heart was a romantic suspense...and heavy on the suspense part.

Dangerous characters, deeply depraved antagonists and dramatic circumstance led to some white knuckle reading.

I found Cowboy, Cross My Heart engaging and entertaining but I missed that special character connection that I love in my reading time. I found quite a few of the secondary characters did grab me and made Cowboy, Cross My Heart a really enjoyed read.

I received this ARC copy of Cowboy, Cross My Heart from St. Martin's Paperbacks. This is my honest and voluntary review. Cowboy, Cross My Heart is set for publication Aug. 28, 2018.

Cowboy, Cross My Heart by Donna Grant

2nd in the Heart Of Texas series. It occurs more than 10 years after the first book.
A fast and immediate attraction for both hero and heroine. Then trouble brews and his strongest goal is to protect her.
The heroine’s support of her friend is admirable. I liked the hero’s ability to grasp the childhood issues.
The underlying mystery is a troubling subject matter.

Second book in the series and of course, I missed the first one. This one a brother from the first book. This one is a stand alone, and I wasn't lost.

Great love story with some really nasty bad guys to take care of. Naomi comes home and runs into some trouble helping her BFF. Brice and his yummy cowboy friends help them out. Can't wait to read the rest of their HEAs.

Coffee Dates with Cowboy, Cross My Heart

First Date: Naomi Pierce, a photographer, has returned to her Texas hometown to support her, best friend and Rodeo Queen, Whitney. She is snapping photos and taking pictures of two brothers, Brice and Caleb Harper. Naomi is drawn to Brice, and it appears as if he notices her in the stands. After the events she meets up with Whitney and someone attempts to grab her camera. Brice steps in and saves her.  It appears Whitney is hiding something and I am anxious to find out what. When Naomi processes her film the suspense angle amps up. This quickly has Brice, along with family and friends, stepping in to help. I was all in!

Second Date: With Naomi in danger and Whitney keeping secrets, Brice moves them into the East ranch for the evening. I love the sparks and sizzling chemistry between Brice and Naomi. Typical of romantic suspense, you'll need to swallow that little blue pill to accept the fast moving romance, but Grant allows them ample time to learn about each other. When the danger becomes deadly Brice and Naomi hold up at Brice's recently purchased homestead. Secondary characters, a little feud between the brothers and perspectives from the villains made for a page-turner.

Third Date: Grant brought us character growth and simmering moments all while turning up the suspense. The suspense thread had a ring of truth to it, and sadly could have been pulled from today's headlines. Sure, it had movie ready action scenes but Grant made it all work. I connected with Brice, adored Naomi and loved that drama between them was low-key and not over the top. I am hoping we get Caleb's story soon, but would also like stories on their friends. Yum. We are treated to a side romance and updates on Clayton and Abby, but this truly can be read on its own. I ended my third date satisfied but eager for more stories in the Heart of Texas series. The next book, My Favorite Cowboy releases in February 2019, but there is no synopsis at the time of this review.

New Release Review! Cowboy, Cross My Heart (Heart of Texas #2) Donna Grant!

New York Times bestselling author Donna Grant takes you deep inside the Texas rodeo scene, where danger and desire ride side by side. . .

Naomi Pierce isn't the type to let a cowboy sweep her off feet. It's not her first rodeo, after all. But when she returns to her Texas hometown, she can't help but be swept up again in the rough-and-tumble world of hard-riding, bronco-busting good-ol'-boys she loved as a girl. She might be here to photograph her Rodeo Queen best friend. But it's one fine-looking cowboy who really captures her eye...

Brice Harper is all man, all muscle, and all heart. From the moment he rides into the stadium, he can't help but notice the beautiful stranger with a camera watching him from the stands. Brice wouldn't be any kind of cowboy if he didn't offer to help the ladies out. But can the rough rider keep this spirited shutterbug out of danger--without risking his heart?

Thrilling suspense and treacherous adversaries draw readers deep inside the Texas rodeo scene, where danger and desire ride side by side. Naomi Pierce and Brice Harper are two strong, convincing characters that readers can easily fall for as they are pulled into their story with a magnetic attraction that holds them hostage once they are in. The romance between Naomi and Brice is full of sizzling electricity and red hot passion although the relationship is threatened by the situation that they find themselves ensnared in. There are plenty of emotional turmoil to accompany that situations as well the kind that goes along with any newly forming relationship to keep readers engaged with the characters.

While thrilling suspense and exhilarating danger ensures that that they keep turning the pages as the search for a stalker makes Naomi and Bride targets of manipulative and powerful enemies. Surprising twists, family issues, friend issues, a budding romance and adrenaline pumping events guarantees that there is never a dull moment and since the author paints such vivid imagery and has created brilliant characters the readers has no problem becoming caught up in all the thrills and romance.

The steady to fast paced plot is further enhanced with believable and realistic issues faced by the characters and the well developed world is enriched by the loyalty and courage of the characters in the Heart of Texas series which enthralls readers and assures that they keep coming back for more.

Days after reading this and I’m still struggling to put into words how I feel about this book. Normally I love anything Donna Grant will write but CCMH just didn’t work for me. The romance was too quickly developed to be believed and it didn’t help that the MCs rarely had any page time alone together. Throw in the touchy plot device of men with power getting away with raping and accosting women and pretty much getting away with it, and the whole thing gets kind of dicey.

When Naomi accidentally catches her friend Whitney’s stalker on film, she’s targeted by a group of powerful men out to silence her. Unknowingly Naomi threatens to expose the rape and sexual assault that has been happening at rodeo beauty pageants, for years. Crimes that others have turned a blind eye too. Working with Brice, her romantic interest, Naomi has to stay one step ahead of the baddies and desperately try to convince her friend to expose the truth and out the men who are terrorizing her.

I guess, bottom line, I had trouble connecting to the story and the characters. Naomi and Brice were decent and they had chemistry but neither was ever really explored enough to warrant the insta-love and smexy marathon they indulge in while in the middle of such a life or death situation. Then there was Whitney. I had a really hard time understanding why she was so adamant and stubborn about keeping quiet about the guys who were trying to murder her and her friends. I would think that after finding out they were out to kill her, she would finally cave and rat those bastards out but she doesn’t. I really hated thinking that she allowed these disgusting animals the use of her body all in the name of a beauty queen crown. That is just so wrong, on so many levels.

The ending was not enough. After reading everything these monsters have done and gotten away with, the ending felt to easy. I felt like the ending was wrapped up too nicely and almost swept under the rug in favor of a clean ending. Call me vindictive. Call me bloodthirsty but give me something other than an easy murder/suicide ending when it comes to villains like these.

Would I recommend?
Sadly this was not a favorite so probably not.

“Brice Harper reminded her of all the things she loved about Texas and cowboys.”

“Danger. It hung in the air like an invisible menace.”

Cowboy, Cross My Heart is the second book in the Heart of Texas Series and it follows the story of Brice and Naomi. When Naomi returns home to photograph her best friend, she can’t help but be swept away in the life she used to have. Finding that special someone may not have been on the menu for Naomi, but when she meets Brice, all bets are off…Brice is the total cowboy. He’s full of heart, totally sweet, charming and can’t resist helping someone in need. So, when he discovers someone is harassing Naomi, he’ll stop at nothing to keep her safe…

Overall, I found this book to be an enjoyable read. This is my first book by this author, so I wasn’t sure what to expect when it came to her writing style. But, I have to say, I thought this book was written well. This story pulls you in instantly and will keep you on your toes the entire time. I loved all the suspenseful moments, the danger lurking around every corner. I enjoyed Brice and Naomi together. Their sparks were instant and their romance was definitely a case of insta-love, but I think it worked really well with these two. I enjoyed seeing Brice come back to life and open his heart to another woman. I liked seeing the possessiveness he had for Naomi and how he’d stop at nothing to protect her. I thought Naomi was a great character. She was super protective of those she lets get close and is a really great friend. Together, these two had some great tension and it was fun watching the two of them try to figure things out.

Cowboy, Cross My Heart was a quick and easy read for me. I definitely think you could finish this book in a single sitting. I loved the suspense and mystery of the story. I think the addition of the villain’s point of view really added to the story and had me turning the pages faster to see how the story was going to play out. My only complaint is that I feel like the ending of the book was a bit rushed. I feel like after the great build of mystery and suspense, that the resolution came too quickly. I would have liked to have seen it more paced with the rest of the story. Other than that, I think the story was great. Cowboy, Cross My Heart is a quick read that will grab you from the first page and will keep you on your toes. This story has just the right amount of steam, action, suspense and of course romance. This is my first book by this author and it most certainly won’t be my last. I look forward to discovering more from this author in the future.

After years away and making a new life for herself, Naomi Pierce has come back to Texas and the rodeo circuit not only as a photographer, but to support her best friend, and Rodeo Queen. Little did she know she would find herself caught up in a nightmare that would threaten her friend’s life, as well as her own. Nor did she plan on falling for the hotter than blazes cowboy who became her knight in blue jeans.

Rough and tumble cowboy, Brice Harper came to Naomi’s rescue when she is attacked in the shadows. Could she have gotten the villain on film? Is her best friend in danger by the competition?
As their attraction grows, so does the danger, a danger that Brice is determined he will stop. Will they ride off safely into the sunset together?

Donna Grant’s COWBOY, CROSS MY HEART combines an insta-romance with suspense and good old Texas hospitality as Brice and his family stand together to keep Naomi safe because just maybe, this Rodeo Queen competition has gotten deadly, very deadly.

I think I would have liked a slower burn on the romance, especially given the danger involved. Great family dynamics, two very likable characters and some supporting characters that scream “give ME a book!” A quick, light read that stands alone, in spite of being part of a series!

Years ago Naomi Pierce was a champion barrel rider, until a drunk driver killed one of her best friends. Now she's a photographer living in Washington DC but she's come back to Texas to visit her mother and see her remaining best friend Whitney, who is now doing well on the Rodeo Queen pageant circuit. But all isn't well with Whitney, a strange man seems to be following her and when Naomi tries to take some pictures surreptitiously the man barges past and breaks her camera.

Brice Harper and his brother Caleb (the two teenagers from the first book all grown up) are champion cowboys. Brice is intrigued by the woman with the silvery laugh and the camera he sees at the rodeo. When her life appears to be in danger he feels compelled to help.

As Naomi and Brice try to uncover what Whitney is too scared to tell they are attacked and are in danger.

I liked this but I didn't love it. There was a good build up of suspense, which then dissipated with the obligatory 'let's stop to have sex right in the middle of an investigation interlude' and didn't really recover for me. The plot seemed a little far-fetched and was then resolved bish-bash-bosh in a matter of moments. Overall, I think this book doesn't quite know where it wants to sit in the romance genre: is it romantic suspense? Is it a cowboy romance? Is it about rodeo or a ranch? Is it a small-town cutesy romance? It didn't really commit and as a reader I felt confused.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

This author is a born storyteller and whether it's her heated paranormal stories or her cowboy romances I know I'm always going to get sucked in .
If like myself you've read Christmas Cowboy Hero than the cast here will be familiar but the author has cleverly gone a few years into the future meaning Brice and Caleb are all grown up. Yes the somewhat naive brothers are now out of the military and back home in Texas but perhaps it's time for them both to stretch their wings ? Well Brice sure thinks so and has bought a ranch but maybe he should have discussed his plans with his brother first .
This story took me by surprise as it delved into what can happen when it comes to those who live for the rodeo circuit. If honest I've only read stories that feature the cowboys who live that life so I thought it extremely interesting that the author took a very different approach. Yes it's essentially a romance but it's woven around a story featuring mysterious shadowy figures taking advantage of those who are vulnerable.
I've no wish to spoil the fun but if you want a couple who quickly fall for each other amidst a backdrop of ranching with added suspense then this book delivers exactly that.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

I guess I'm on the mood for cowboy romance and the perfect way to read this is via audiobook. The second novel of Heart of Texas series focuses on Brice Harper, Abby Harper's brother. He is mesmerized by the woman behind the camera, Naomi Pierce, who just returned the town to support her best friend Whitney, a Rodeo Queen.

Things got intense when Naomi's best friend got into trouble. Brice and Naomi worked together in order to protect Whitney. The story is really engaging and I am on the edge of my seat with all of the things happened here. The romance between the protagonists is good and not over the top.

Now wasn't I excited when I saw the boys had grown up to be cowboys! Some cowboy loving with a lady photographer, rodeo funning, and a dose of darker suspense stir things up nicely in this latest Heart of Texas entry.

Cowboy, Cross My Heart is the second book in the series. It can be read out of order in a pinch as it takes place several years after the first book and has a self-contained main plot. However, it does have strong family ties with book one that connect the pair of stories.

Brice Harper is all grown up now and he's ready to step out of his sister and brother in law's loving care to follow his dreams. Unfortunately, he screws things up with his brother and lands in the thick of a dangerous situation all in the same day. But, on the bright side, he's enchanted by a woman's laugh and realizes he's long over his ex-girlfriend.

Naomi Pierce is a city girl now- or so she thinks- until one visit to the rodeo to take photos of her Rodeo Queen best friend. One look at a blue-eyed cowboy sets her back on her heels. Right when the attack out of nowhere comes in an attempt to steal her camera for the pictures she just took, there is Brice to drive him off. If they can survive the danger, maybe she'll give Brice and Texas a chance.

I didn't realize who the hero of Cowboy Cross My Heart would be when I started reading. To be straight, I didn't do more than notice the fact that it was the second book after I really enjoyed the first one. I loved that the author picked back up the family story with the next Harper after Abby got her happily ever after with Clayton. Brice and Caleb are all grown up and Clayton and Abby run the ranch and have a cute family. But, all is not smooth sailing when Brice wounds Caleb unintentionally and stumbles on a dark mystery when he gets involved with Naomi.

The story opens with a bit of rodeo action and then mystery even while things slowly heat up between Brice and Naomi. Naomi is an engaging heroine and is forced to take a look at her life with an ex-fiance' and her safe life back in the city versus where her heart tells her she really wants to be. She's confident and a good friend and she doesn't make a big deal of it when she starts to feel attraction for Brice. Ha! She's the most low angst heroine I've come across in a while, but it didn't make things boring. On the contrary, the author revealed layers to her and took the opportunity to let her and her best friend, Whitney, sort out the past and present and then her and Brice pursue their attraction and friendship. Loved how it was all handled.

This has a strong suspense element that unravels slowly with some heart-stopping action and mystery until about midway when the author switches things up and lets the villain tell part of the story which is what clues in the reader and adds some more tension knowing how bad the danger really is. I was startled by the climax and enjoyed the denouement and epilogue.

All in all, this was another fabulous outing with the Hearts of Texas series and I am all in for Caleb to get his story. In fact, keep 'er rolling with Cooper and Jace getting some romancing too, please. I can definitely recommend this for those who like slow-burn contemporary western romance blended with a strong dose of suspense.

My thanks to St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

ARC REVIEW

Heart of Texas #2, In the first book, The Christmas Cowboy Hero, we met Abby Harper and her two teenage brothers, Brice and Caleb. Some years have past and now the brothers are all grown up each served in the military and are now working the rodeo and at the East Ranch. This can be read as a stand alone, but the first book is so good I recommend reading it. Naomi Pierce use to ride the rodeo she was so good no one has beat her high score in barrel racing but after the death of a very good friend Naomi left the rodeo and Texas all together and became a photographer. She back now to visit her mother and her best friend Whitney who is the Queen of the Rodeo this year.

Things start to go bad when someone attacks Whitney and Naomi and try to steal Naomi's camera, luckily Brice wasn't to far away and helps them out. Brice noticed Naomi when she was in the stands and she noticed him back an instant attraction. When Naomi asked Whitney about the attack Whitney clammed up, told Naomi to drop it which just made Naomi even more suspicious. The next day after Naomi developed some of the pictures she was taking right before the attack she gave some copies to Brice to see if he could help her identify the guy, Brice is wacked upside the head and had his hand smashed and the picture stolen and at the same time someone pushes Naomi in the arena and is almost killed by the wagon race. Still Whitney says nothing. With the help of Caleb, Abby, Clay, and their friends Jace, Cooper, and the Sheriff they are able to make an educated guess about what has been happening but who is involved and how deep does the corruption goes is still a mystery. It isn't until a guilt trip from Naomi does Whitney finally tell her what exactly has been going on and for how long. They press on further with their investigation making the guys behind it all very nervous.

Brice and Naomi don't have a normal courtship but the feelings are there and it's too strong for either of them to deny. Even with all this going on they still manage time to fall in love. It was a fairly easy romance with a few bumps and complications but the main focus of the story was what was happening within the rodeo pageant. Overall, I loved the story and the characters, I inhaled this book. Donna Grant is a fantastic writer I can't wait for the rest of the series.

A bit of a different twist, but as all the previous Sons of Texas novels I liked this story. The story starts when Naomi returns home to Texas from DC where she now lives to watch her friend Whitney compete in the local rodeo and hold onto her Rodeo Princess title. Being there has brought back many memories for Naomi. Some good, some not so. There were three of them, always. Their friend SueEllen who was the larger than life girl in the group, while the three of them were out celebrating one night they were involved in an accident. SueEllen didn't survive and Whitney and Naomi sustained injuries. Naomi is now a photographer, has a great business going for herself and no longer trapped in small town Texas. She still holds the record time as a barrel racer, but that was long ago.
Taking photos of the rodeo that night was just something she automatically did, while she did catch the eye of a local Harper brother. Caleb and Brice were a team, unbeaten. This pageant thing was a little confusing but the story mainly focused on Whitney of course, the girls all had chaperones to insure there were pure and upheld the high moral standards that were expected of the Queen. When Whitney and Naomi walk off a little to talk while everyone else was busy and that's when Whitney is distracted by something she sees in the shadows, Naomi is attacked and the person is after her camera. Coming to her rescue is Brice. This starts a cascade of events, secrets, lies, murder and the suspense just kept building. Naomi is taken to the East Ranch. His sister Harper is married to Clayton East, a powerful and wealthy rancher. They have a long history, the Harpers and the Easts. Abby is now pregnant and it's been difficult, almost due and confined to bed, which is like trying to tell the sun not to come up. But she helps anyway she can. I also like the brothers friends Jace and Cooper. Good guys. Brice finds himself falling for Naomi but manages to keep his hands off her for longer than expected. I loved the two of them together and also Brice's relationship with his brother Caleb.
The story was suspenseful and so many twists and I found myself waiting for the other shoe to drop in this one. Well written, it will take you on a white knuckle ride.

Everyone who has been visiting my blog regularly knows that I love a good cowboy story. So when I finished reading my previous book, and received an email about a review request of ‘Cowboy, Cross My Heart’ I couldn’t resist and started reading. I was definitely in need of a nice cowboy filled romance novel.

In ‘Cowboy, Cross My Heart’ we meet Naomi Pierce. Naomi visits her old hometown in Texas after being away for a long time. Naomi is visiting her best friend, the rodeo queen, when a handsome cowboy captures her eyes. When Naomi and her friend Whitney get attacked the handsome cowboy Brice Harper can’t stand back and comes to their rescue. But unfortunately it doesn’t stay with one attack. Soon Naomi and Brice are forced to hide and make plans to find there attacker. And although it starts getting more dangerous, they also can’t deny the chemistry between them.

‘Cowboy, Cross My Heart’ is a nice romance and suspense story. It’s not a very hard to follow story, and there are definitely some very predictable moments. The writing was very descriptive, and I found myself finding the story moving in a, sometimes to fast, pace. One moment Naomi and Brice see each other for the first time. The second, Brice is very protective of Naomi and acts like he is already in love with her.

But that doesn’t mean I didn’t like the story. I enjoyed reading it. I like the main characters Naomi and Brice and I enjoyed reading about their romance. But I definitely missed the ‘build-up’ romance part. It just moved way to fast and I just didn’t really believe there romance as much since I felt like it just happened in a second. Brice is immediately very protective of Naomi, and his friends and family can see immediately that there is something going on.

The suspense part was definitely fun to read. But also very disturbing and in the end it came to a conclusion unexpectedly fast. This also just felt to rushed to me. This story just had more potential if you ask me.

Overall, I enjoyed the read and the author was able to make me want to keep on reading. But there was a lot that could have been a little better if you ask me.

Donna Grant has been hit or miss for me - but I did enjoy her last couple of releases. I first read her Sons of Texas series (with book one getting two stars from me, book two getting three, book three getting four and leaving me wanting more for that series), and then decided to give the first book in this series a try. The Christmas Cowboy Hero was pretty good. So I was looking forward to this one.

But it took me three weeks to read Cowboy, Cross My Heart. THREE WEEKS.

I wish I knew how to quit books when I’ve read another from that series. I really need to learn.

Because nothing about this book worked for me. Not the romance. Not the suspense. Not the reason for the suspense.

All I kept thinking for the first half of the book was it reminded me of a grown-up version of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys, where people are in danger, crimes are committed, the police are never called, and all the friends and family are playing amateur detective to figure out who the bad guys are and what they want.

And I know the #metoo movement is front page all the time now (as it should be), but as it played out in this story it just seemed over the top and contrived. All these bad guys are working together? And then the henchman just rolls over right away when he’s caught?!?! Are you kidding me?

Add to it a relationship that went from love at first sight to undying love in four days, and there was not a single thing that seemed even remotely realistic about this story.

Yeah, yeah. It’s fiction. I get that. But I like my stories best when they resemble real life. Or at least don’t try to use current events to spin a story that attempts to be relevant but misses the mark.

I know I’m in the minority here. Lots of people are loving this book. But not me. I really, really didn’t.

I received an ARC via St Martin’s Press in exchange for an honest review.

This was my first Donna Grant book but I saw it was about cowboys so I was sold. I didn’t know that that this was series but it was okay because it read like a standalone.

I liked Bryce and Naomi together. They were both at a place in their lives where they were open to love again and when they met it felt like they found their other half.

“With Naomi, everything fit easily, as if it were meant to be.”

This was a cowboy romance with a bit of suspense thrown in. I liked it but I didn’t love it. I think it had to do with different POVs that we get here. It was so hard to keep up with the story at times because it kept switching from person to person.

The story was majority focused on the mystery of who was stalking Whitney so the romance wasn’t as big of a part of the story as I would like.

Now I was a fan of the friendships here. Naomi went through so much for Whitney. To keep her safe and find out who ruined her life. There was never a time that she but her friendship on the back burner to get with Bryce. Also, Bryce’s family made me smile. Especially Abby! They were so welcoming and willing to help.

So while it wasn’t a favorite of mine, it was a good story. I’m excited to see who the next story will be about. Hopefully, it will be Caleb!

Having read and enjoyed Donna Grant's last cowboy romance, I was looking forward to this book. However, I have to say I was a bit disappointed by how quickly this book wrapped up the suspense factor. The entire novel revolved around this big conspiracy and then it was just over. The bad guys were simply caught too easily in relation to the build-up. Also I just felt like there were some loose ends that were never resolved. But it was nice to see characters from the first book twelve years later. even though this book does revisit those characters, it can totally be read as a stand alone novel.
In my opinion, perhaps this story would have worked better more as a cowboy romance. Because really how can you go wrong with a hot cowboy?

First Impressions
Cowboy Cross My Heart is the second installment in the "Heart of Texas" series. This is a book about the bad boy cowboy from the first book. If you have read the first book, the hero is the troubled kid from the first one who went rebellious and made some bad choices wanting to provide for his siblings. I absolutely adored seeing Brice reach his HEA and seeing him being such a responsible hard working adult. I will be honest in that this one was entertaining, thrilling, kept me on edge and had a solid romance. It definitely has Donna Grant's typical writing style.

First Line
Excitement rushed through everyone as the lights suddenly cut out in the arena.

The Main Protagonists
The Hero: Brice Harper
Brice Harper is a redeeming hero. As a teenager, made mistakes with good intentions, served in the military and determined to run his own ranch with his brother. He is sexy, protective and caring.

The Heroine: Naomi Pierce
Naomi grew up in a Texas small town, naturally born in the saddle, living in D.C.. She has a strong will, a fighter when needed and has always yearned for love and a good life

Summary
Naomi Pierce has come to Texas to visit her best friend who is part of a Rodeo Queen beauty pageant. When there is a evil plot against her best friend because she and the other contestants have been assaulted by men secretly in power and using them for sexual favors. Naomi gets targeted as she has some photo evidence, where she runs into the Harper brothers. Brice is protective and strong, and when he runs into Naomi, he is determined to protect her no matter what. When it becomes apparent that her life is in danger, he and his family use all their influence to protect them. But as tensions escalate as the danger increases, the pieces of the puzzle start to fall into place. But will Naomi and Brice survive and find a way towards their HEA?

What I Loved
Cowboy, Cross My Heart was a delightful story. It really reminded me why I fell in love with this series originally and not sure why I haven't finished the series yet. I really had a blast with Brice's book. We see him being such a responsible young man and I loved how he is with Naomi. He is so wonderful for her. I really enjoyed that. I also found it most interesting to see how he is with his siblings and became so endeared by their relationships with each other. To see him change from the young boy who made so many mistakes for his family, I just fell hard for it.

We also have a kick-ass plot. There is something so captivating about the danger-themed plot that this author implements, and she really builds on the tension regarding the mystery and intrigue. We also have a solid friendship that we see with Naomi and her best friend. I loved their bonds to each other and what a great friendship they have and have been building for years. I really admired Naomi and her strong spirit. She has such a great balance to her. She is strong and feisty but not kick ass. She is such a relatable independent heroine that I just loved seeing her within this story and her great growth in this story and the moments where we see her face adversity.

What I Struggled With
The romance was more in the backstory. While I really enjoyed their chemistry, and the spice in this book is powerful, I felt like the relationship aspects could have had a bit more focus that what we see.

Narration
Truly delightful. Not the perfect narration, but it was solid and she did a great job in building the danger feels to the story.

Overall View
Cowboy Cross My Heart is a superb read that really delivered in what I was looking for. Its a story of thrills, superb plot portrayal and an romance that endears the reader in a very solid way.

Favorite Quote(s)
Her beauty might have caught his attention, but it was her strength, steadfastness, heart, and authenticity that kept pulling him back to her
