If you're an aspiring entrepreneur, the good news is many of the barriers to starting a business have come down since forty years ago.
That's not to say you won't face challenges. Entrepreneurship can be a dog-eat-dog world. But if you want to stay true to yourself and your values as you rise to the top, you're in good company.
Growing up in the segregated South in a family of eleven children and nurtured by a loving mother and father, Janice Bryant Howroyd faced racism and sexism in addition to the challenges faced by every new business owner. None of that stopped her from becoming the first black woman to own a billion-dollar business.
In Acting Up, Janice shares the model she lives by and continues to represent: that of a Leader who works for good, for growth and innovation, for her family values, and for the same ideals upon which she founded her company. Janice will help you discover the Leader inside yourself and show you how to use your uniqueness to conquer the business world.
Businesswoman, entrepreneur, educator, ambassador, author, mentor and Presidential Special Appointee, Janice Bryant Howroyd is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of The ActOne Group, a global leader providing customized cutting edge solutions in the human resources industry. The ActOne Group is a multi-billion dollar (USD) award-winning, international Talent and Talent Technology enterprise with multiple divisions that each service unique areas of employment and provide talent management solutions.
One of the best books by a CEO that I’ve ever read. Janice Bryant Howroyd is one of the most inspiring and successful CEO’s that not enough people know about. She became the first African American woman to build and own a billion dollar company by focusing on helping people find work while building a transparent, trusted multinational company. I learned a lot about business and values while reading “Acting Up” and think that Jannice is a perfect role model for today’s entrepreneurs, I especially love how her lessons are illustrated through personal stories as well as anecdotes from her husband and from books like “The Art of War". It’s important for new generations to see how you can do well while doing good, and how ethics and transparency and family values can lend to more longterm success and rewards. In a time when so many people are cut-throat and will lie and cheat to get ahead in business, it’s refreshing for businesspeople and entrepreneurs to have an inspiring and ethical example like this to guide them through their lives and careers.
thank you so much Janice for writing this book! I’m very lucky to get to live in work in the twin counties and work in Tarboro, Edgecombe County, North Carolina. Hearing Janice’s story directly from her and all of the lessons she has learned made for one of the most inspiring books I’ve ever read in my entire life.
There are such deep assets in rural communities like our own here in Edgecombe County.
Janice you are an inspiration to us all and remind us of the incredible potential we all hold as individuals. Thank you.
I remember seeing a story in the news about Ms. Bryant Howroyd a few years after she started her agency. Seems like a million years ago. She saw a need and filled it.
However, in her book she shows how standing true to values she was brought up with actually gave her business the solid foundation which grew it into a million dollar business.
Must read for those struggling with which road to take in their careers.
Janice Bryant Shares Her Pearls of Wisdom In A Relatable Way.
The author shared valuables on how to run a successful business, and that everything matters, and to always listen for the lesson. Great book. The results are the truth. I loved it!

This is a phenomenal and practical approach to a life and business to one of few Black women billionaires. As a self made woman, Janice has lived a rich life from her childhood dinner table to international board rooms. Definitely a great book if you’re considering entrepreneurship or are focused on rising in corporate. She’s a great leader.
