Title: Save Yourself Series: Selfless #1 Author: Sara Breaker Genre: Middle Grade/YA, Sci-Fi, Dystopian Overall Rating: 5 stars
Save Yourself is the story of Laney Carter, a normal 17 year old girl living a normal life. That is until the most popular guy in school, Jake Donovan, or so she thinks, (he's actually called Noah in his universe) drags her into a parallel universe where Laney Carter is an award winning physicist. Dr Laney Carter has gone missing, and so did her prototype that would allow inter-dimensional travel extremely easy for those who want to not only bring down their universe, but other universes, including Laney's. But what does this have to do with Laney? Well, the evil Kyle Hannover (who in Laney's universe is a loner type nerd, but in Dr Laney's universe he's an arch villain type yoke) wants it, and he suspects Laney can help with that.
But she can't, can she? With the help of Noah, they have to find Dr Laney and get her help to find the prototype so Laney can go home and every thing can go back to normal. But will things ever be normal again?
This book wasted no time in getting to the point. The first chapter is a prologue to what's to come, but the actually first chapter that sets the story in motion wastes no time in getting the wheels rolling. You're instantly in the world of normal Laney, her boarding school lifestyle, the mundane normalness of it all, and within a couple of pages you've already got to meet Jake...Or Noah as Laney soon finds out. Usually I hate when a story doesn't have a build up, I like the little details of a book, but I actually didn't mind it with this one. I found it to be a help or else the story could've potentially dragged. I think the fast paced start helped with the fast paced flow of the story as there really wasn't any time for the characters to hang around. You really felt the time pressure that the characters were facing and I think the author's style of writing really enable you to still feel connected to our main characters during this pressured situation.
I did really enjoy this book, my side note is that I LOVED the dystopian edit of Europe. LOVED IT. Most dystopian stories are set in the states, but let's be real, if you subscribe to the multiverse theory, there should definitely be a dystopian London...Paris etc. I enjoyed this change of scenery from the usual settings of books. It presented a welcomed change.
The characters themselves were really well established and presented solid voices in the narrative. Laney had the correct type of "WTF" reaction to things I think anyone would have and Breaker really captured her voice well. Noah was your broody type for a while. The one thing I will say that I wasn't obsessed with in this book was the cliche kind of love interest with Noah. We knew that was going to happen. Of course parallel universe Laney was the love of Noah's life, why wouldn't she be? But I do appreciate that the author didn't use that fact to dominate the story and that Noah was in this for the prototype as well as rescuing Dr. Laney from Hannover. The greater good and all that jazz.
I do recommend this book if you're after a book that is easy and enjoyable to read but still has substance. It didn't bore me and I found it flowed really well from chapter to chapter. I would say check it out on Amazon here if you're interested: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Save-Yoursel...
It’s all go… Laney was your average college student, but on this particular day she had been kidnapped. Not only had she no idea why she had been kidnapped, but it felt like she was doing a lot of marathon running and she hadn’t exactly trained for it!
This parallel universe sure looks like London… isn’t that no… the construction for Big Ben?
Whilst Laney had been running and managed to get cornered, Noah the dead spit of the hottest guy on campus (Jake Donovan), was there to save her and get her out of a very sticky situation. Noah was tightlipped about what was going on, he mentioned a parallel universe and they fact that they needed to save the world, but they needed the prototype that Laney had made, WOAHHHH!
More questions and answers waited for them on the sub-lab where she meets Berry and P.T.
It turns out that it’s not Laney that they are referring to, it’s Dr Laney Carter, her double from this universe, the dystopian world that they were currently in. But first they need to save Dr Laney in order to save the multiverses!
This novel was a lovely quick read. I found the storyline compelling and didn’t lose interest, some of the ‘tech speak’ went over my head at points, but I definitely got the gist of it. I did enjoy Laney’s character, she was relatable, questioned everything, tried to make light of the heavy stuff and even the close encounters of the ‘love’ description were written very well. Noah was a very typical man, very focused and not much of a laugh, however, he did open up as the story evolved which was nice to see. I especially liked P.T. and Berry they were very funny characters and well developed.
Back to the Future meets Star Wars meets Terminator - for middle YA as it’s all’s clean and sweet and innocent
It started off as a sciencey Terminator book - no, they’re after YOU and kinda come with me if you want to live. And the beginning of the next book is kind of like the Terminator saga continued. The book progressed - with fast pace - to quantum jumps, save The One mission, multiple backstabbing and a little bit of romance.
17yo Laney has been all-out tired for the past 3 weeks. After she collapses and the campus nurse tells her there’s nothing physically wrong with her, en route to her dorm she’s stopped by who looks like a clone of one of the pretty jocks who pulls her into a parallel world. And the adventures begin.
This is an enjoyable, fast-paced scifi action-adventure that takes you from a US uni campus to abandoned London to a submarine, then Paris and then a secret lab facitlity. Fascinating. And while a part of me abhors the Louvre being made into an illegal market, it would make sense, smack in the middle of the town. Loving the tech in this parallel world. I cn totally see this being made into a series similar to Dr Who. Loved the hints at romance, bu t my guesses as to why the MCs are drawn to each other were way off the mark as too adult. This is a middle YA book. Loved the nods to Beautiful Creatures (Macon) and to Dr Emmet Brown from Back to the Future plus the box shrinking was so Star Wars (of which there is a mention) and en to Terminator (first jumps having to go through nekkid), but this is not a fanfic book. Come to think of it, the book does have that vibe to it of Marty McFly running around in a version of his reality, wild-eyed, except in this one it’s a girl, Laney. Also love an alternate “end of our existence” date of 20.03.2020 (compared to the Mayan one of 21.12.2012). I loved that the science was researched - didn’t know excess alpha brainwaves during sleep could cause sleep disorders. This could be portal fantasy, except quantum shears instead of portals or magic mirrors.
Now Laney’s version of how one would react when someone tells you they are from a parallel reality - this I can believe.
Soundbite: “These crazy geniuses are going to fix this whole mess. And you are going to go home. /…/ And then get therapy, /…/ Lots of therapy.”
Recommended for lovers of clean middle YA scifi. If you love Star Wars AND Terminator AND Back to the Future, you’ll most certainly enjoy this book.
Let me just say, this one started out SO EXCITING, even before I got to chapter one. Scrolling through the first few pages, one chapter title caught my attention "The Cake is a Lie".... I had to stop what I was doing and immediately DM Sara "IS THAT A PORTAL REFERENCE IN YOUR PORTAL FANTASY SERIES????" Indeed it is. Just, an amazing way to start before the book even started, haha
Another absolutely FANTASTIC book by this amazing author! Totally unpredictable, action-packed, and impossible to put down! I can't wait to start the next book, and thankfully I don't have to! Off to read it now!
From the opening paragraph, I could tell I was in for a wild ride with Laney and Noah. The action-packed opening chapters quickly and clearly establish the characters and situations. Let’s face it, time travel, parallel universes, special agents … writers can get trapped by ever-escalating continuity issues, especially when many of the characters cross over. The build-up to the conclusion had me dreading the end of the book … I didn’t want it to end; but it does … and satisfyingly so
This is an amazing story with dimensional travel and lots of action. Never a dull moment in this story! Great characters and a story that is as well-written as it is compelling. I am looking for more by this author and especially in this series.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is a sci-fi full for nerds. And I mean really full as I was kinda lost sometimes in the technical stuff. But the actions, the twist and the nerdy jokes made it for me. I enjoyed reading this book with characters from another, alternate universe. Laney navigating this new world ask the questions we wonder even if we have a bit more information than her and are in a more comfortable position.

"Save Yourself" is Episode 1 in S. Breaker's Young Adult Sci-fi/Romance/Adventure series "Selfless".
Total Score: 5/5
Summary: Laney’s thought her day-to-day problems of school and her sleepless nights made it more difficult until she found herself unwittingly transferred to a different world. Laney was hunted by strange individuals who seemed determined to take her alive or dead. While on the run she is saved by Jake Donovan the popular school jock or so she thought. Laney quickly learns that things are not what they seem and Jake is really Noah. You see somehow Laney has fallen into an alternate dimension where things may look similar, but are different. Laney and Noah find themselves on a desperate mission to save not only his world, but a realities. Will they succeed or is everything doomed.
This was a fascinating look at the possibilities of what could happen in alternate dimensions where anything is as possible as the limits of your imagination. Laney quickly finds out that the differences between their worlds are more important than the similarities. The technological advances in Noah’s world were interesting, but what caused them was tragic. I for one will be waiting for the next book in the Save Your-Self series.
Don’t break the spacetime continuum There are some IRL references like cities (London & Paris), movies (Annie & The Matrix), and technology (force fields & VR helmets). Even D&D and gaming consoles get honorable mentions.
Just a hint of clean teen romance with tons of quantum stuff (but still easy to read).
You can ‘bet your bottom dollar’ that I’ll be reading ‘Find Yourself’ and ‘Free Yourself’!
If you're a fan of sci-fi/dystopian books with a bit of romance, this is a book you may want to check out, as it contains a bit of everything: time travel, special agents, and parallel universes.
Laney Carter appears to be a normal seventeen-year-old girl ... until school hottie Jake Donovan pulls her into an alternate universe, where he's named Noah and she's an award-winning physicist named Dr. Carter. She's gone missing, along with a prototype that someone wants to get their hands on. Laney and Noah need to find the prototype if Laney hopes to have her life get back to normal.
Due to the short nature, there's not a lot of wasted words in the story. Things are set up in the first chapter, the action stays steady, and the ending is satisfying. This is the first book in the series.
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy, but I wasn't required to leave a positive review.
This story was not my cup of tea. It was too fast paced for my liking and despite the high speed I had a hard time getting into it. I felt confused about many things, especially the ages. You’re trying to tell me all these teenagers are super intelligent professors and scientists with years of experience? And having relationships for six years and still having an ex - at seventeen?! Yes, I know we get an explaination for this at about 52% of the book, but the fact that Laney never pondered over this makes it so frustrating and unbelievable since it made me think I missed something in the beginning.
It’s a cool story concept and I love multiverses like the show Fringe, but I had a hard time with this book. Had to force myself to finish it which I’m glad I did because we get explainations further on, but I will not be reading the other books in the series.
"Save Yourself" is a sci-fi YA novel with romance, the first of a saga. It gets interesting while you progress in the reading, so, keep reading. There is a very peculiar love triangle where Laney, the protagonist, will face the hardest competition ever. The descriptions and jargon put you in a more advanced parallel world where most of the events happen, and the dynamics between the characters are enjoyable, sometimes even funny. The twists in the story were smart, and the author knew how and where to use them. I'm looking forward for the #2. (I received a free review copy of this book and have voluntarily left a review.)
I received a complimentary copy of the book in return for an honest review.
For fans of young adult Sci-Fi books who also enjoy a bit of romance this is a great easy to read story. I found it a little difficult to get into over the first couple of chapters, however once I got my head around the idea of parallel universes and different versions of the characters I really enjoyed it. I found it got better and better as the story went on and the ending was great and set up for the next instalment which I am looking forward to reading.
I received to free review copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review. The book is good. The best part is it’s a short book with no drag. However that was the drawback as well. There was hardly any description of the background considering it was set in a completely different universe. But the biggest minus is character exploration or lack of it.
Anyway despite the drawbacks, I really liked premise of the book and enjoyed reading it. Will try to read the sequel as well
I received a free review copy of this book and I’m voluntarily leaving a review. I throughly enjoyed this book because it’s not a genre I normally read. It took me out of my comfort zone but left me wanted more. It left me wanting me to read more about parallel worlds and wondering “do they really exist?”. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in this series. The only thing I would change is the repetitive use of “crease in Laneys brow”. Thanks for the opportunity to read this book.
so dumb. i wanted to read more sci-fi or fantasy books so i chose this one since it was in a series and a shorter book. it was so dumb. i don’t even care to see what happens in the following books. alternate world, same person kind of story but it was not written well at all. very cheesy but not in a good way.
This was a great book! The characters could use a little more back story but very well developed. If you’re looking for an original story line, this is the book!!
I DNF at 57% It was like the author edited out chapters and then forgot readers no longer had that information. Because they'd reference something that never happened. But I went with it until this tidbit gets dropped... “Well, another side effect of the cascade bomb event was that it triggered a genetic mutation, so certain parts of our brains, more notably the parts for intellect, mature something almost twice as fast as they used to. So, in reality, physically we may look seventeen, but our brains are really—” “Thirty-four? Ew.” Laney wrinkled her nose.
Ok so first off, I don't think brains work as just described. Just because they can grow into their brains faster doesn't mean they have had the time to learn all the things they'd need to learn everything to become top scientists AND super soldiers. Just because you have the intellectual capability to understand something doesn't make you magically know everything, so they will wouldn't be able to advance that quickly. Plus intellect and maturity aren't the same things. So if they've been dating since they were in 11 year old bodies that had matured to an age 22 brain, wouldn't that mean to them, New Laney is basically an 8 year old in their world? It's really weird any way you look at it.

Short, fast read that dives right into the action and just keeps barrelling from one action scene and setting to another hardly taking a moment to breath until the rushed conclusion. There is a lot going on in this book, but it kind of feels like Laney, the central character, is dragged into a maelstrom and never quite gets a chance to take her bearings. I wish it would have slowed down a little so we could get a chance to really see and learn about this alternate post-apocalyptic world run by genius children. The world and characters are different from what tends to be typical in this genre and are worth exploring.
I read the second book in this series first and it actually helped me figure out a bit of what was happening in this book. It is an intriguing concept and there is a lot of potential here. I was glad I "met" a couple characters from this book already as they got a bit more character development later. The plot is pretty straightforward and along the lines of what I would expect from a YA.
Interesting idea. Just needed to be fleshed out a little more. Most of the book was pure action, which was nice, but we didn’t really get to see how Laney got dragged into all this. One chapter she’s a normal fifteen year old attending high school and the next seems dodging military men in London in a different world. And everyone is a fifteen year old (which is explained away with several other plot holes by a science-ish bomb). And everyone has the name name and looks exactly the same as everyone on the original world except for the MMC 🤷♀️
The science didn’t to amazingly in depth like I prefer (personal preference), but it was entertaining enough to keep my attention. Nice little short read delving into the multiverse. I liked how the romance between two identical characters was addressed and the ending had a pretty good set up for book two but not enough to make me go read it
It gives that handholdy tourist trope? I forget the acutally term but when one character knows everything and main character knows nothing so instead of learning the world through experience the one character just explains everything in detail.
I know it was only like 200 pages but it felt like they were doing a bunch of little tasks that were half explained through Noah and the rest not explained for also all of it to be lies, like basically the ending is just a plot twist of "everyone lied!!" oh and heres a cliff hanger about how its not acutally over because something happened we didn't tell you about
I loved the entire plotline of this book. The fact that it was a multiverse and we got to explore another world, where inter dimensional travel was not only a theory, but an actual possibility? I was fascinated.
I fell in love with the characters almost instantly, although, I can’t deny: I found some things unnecessary (the whole romance plot with Noah and Laney, her kissing him to say thank you), but overall, I loved the book. I can’t wait to start book two!
Fast paced YA dystopian read that has the main character 17 year old Laney being thrust into an alternate universe where she must fight for survival along with Noah the "somewhat" good guy as they search for her alternate self who is a genius scientist thats been captured. I didn't find anything steampunk about the story but it is still a good little read. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
I looked inside the kindle read on Amazon on olena's recommendation
BOOK:SAVE YOURSELF:A PORTAL FANTASY SCI-FI ADVENTURE(SELF LESS BOOK 1 ) BY S.BREAKER
Happening in the dead city ,ground zero ,this is a high school fiction on genuinely curious Laney's exam worries and scare that trigger in her presumptions of her being ill even as Jake Donovan the scientist tries protecting her from assassin's after her life.
When Laney is told about alternative worlds by Noah, she scoffs yeah right. But when Noah takes Laney through a quantum shear, she learns that he is telling the truth. This story has plenty of action for any adrenaline junky and ends in a cliffhanger. Highly recommended.
I received an advance review copy and am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was so good! It starts off with a bang, right smack in the middle of the action, and it's nonstop from there! I read this pretty much in one sitting and was enthralled from start to finish! I thought the romance developed a little too quickly, but the concept of parallel timelines and alternate realities was so well done and fascinating! A great post-apocalyptic sci-fi read.
